Review Kesar Da Dhaba - Amritsar

Yashpal Khanna (Laidback Yash)
one of most famous restaurant in the city. my reason for rating was the services I received. may be I visited them around 4 PM hence the things were not as they supposed to be. we ordered their dal tadka , steamed rice, ajwain laccha paratha, laccha paratha, chana tadka. though every thing was overpowered with taste of butter for parathas and chana tadka that worked, but their most hyped dish dal did not lived up to my expectation. rice served were cold and tasted stale portions of orders were small compared to price . you will feel prices at menu are cheap but when the actual order comes it may disappoint you. only two waiter were at services who were slow and slacking in serving 7-10 customers at that time. reaching at place as also a kind of project. though it will give you a good tour to old amritsar around Harminder sahib. may be they have better services and ambiance and taste at proper lunch, dinner time. but i did not tasted & experienced it so cannot comment on it

Today I got a chance to visit the famous Kesar da Dhaba. Crowd management was excellent. There was a queue of 15-20 people but i got a seat in 15 minutes. Kaali dal was bit overrated. We usually get dal better than this even at an ordinary restaurant. Should have been bit spicy. Rotis and Parathas were really good. I ordered Sarson ka saag and makkai di roti. Both were good. I became an instant fan of roti, thin and crispy. Great value of money since the price of food is less compared to restaurants in and around Golden Temple.

If you really wish to go on a foodporn ride, This is the place to be at. Small dingy location with lot of waiting period, but man when you get the table and the food is there, you have been transported to a different world. We ordered laccha paranthas, dal fry But but Palak paneer will literally take your breath away. If you visiting golden temple this has to be on your places to go to list. Warn you again do not miss This

Food was good without being great! Better places in Amritsar. Nothing wrong - but you are paying for the name and the 1919 historical landmark. Paratha selection was amazing (they don't do Amritsari kulcha only Lacha Paratha, where they do the infamous hand crush!). Curries were so-so (Shahi paneer was not a lot of creamy cashew curry, mostly oil). Stick to parathas. Also- pain to get to (can't take a cab there; by foot or auto only). RECOMMEND.

Kesar Da Dhaba is a vegetarian Punjabi restaurant in Amritsar, India. It was started in 1916 by Lala Kesar Mal and his wife, Parvati, in Sheikhupura, Pakistan. The couple sold dal and roti, including Dal Makhani, or "Mah ki Dal". After the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, they moved the dhaba to Amritsar. The dhaba's recipes and cooking methods have remained the same for 75 years. The menu includes dal fry, chana fry, palak paneer, shahi paneer, malai kofta, and various types of rotis and paranthas. They also have four different types of thalis and many desserts. The dhaba is located between the Golden Temple and Jallianwala Bagh. It has two air-conditioned halls that can host 150 guests

Undoubtedly best place to eat delicious, authentic punjabi food at reasonable price. Kesar da Dhaba is a well-known restaurant located in Amritsar, Punjab, India. It is renowned for its authentic Punjabi cuisine and has been serving delicious food since 1916. The restaurant is particularly famous for its signature dish, "Dal Makhani," a rich and creamy lentil curry cooked with butter and cream. Kesar da Dhaba has a rustic ambiance, reminiscent of traditional roadside dhabas (eateries) in India. The restaurant has retained its old-world charm and has become an iconic landmark in Amritsar. Apart from Dal Makhani, some other popular dishes at Kesar da Dhaba include Amritsari Kulcha, Chole Bhature, Sarson Ka Saag, Makki Ki Roti, and Lassi (a refreshing yogurt-based drink). The food is prepared using traditional cooking techniques and authentic Punjabi spices, ensuring an incredible culinary experience. Due to its popularity, Kesar da Dhaba can get quite crowded, especially during peak hours and tourist seasons. It is advisable to arrive early or make reservations to secure a table. The restaurant continues to attract both locals and tourists who want to savor the flavors of traditional punjabi cuisine.

Loves the food here. Reaching here through the small lanes was exciting in itself. Interestingly, at one turn, Looking at maps to See qhere to turn, one of the shopkeeper, without any ask, said "beta sahi ja re ho, saamne hi hai" By Diwali they would be having one more building. Loved the daal much.

I went there on my Amritsar trip after hearing some great reviews from people but was a bit disappointed. Service was fast however it wasn't able to match my taste buds as their most hyped dish - dal did not live up to my expectations. I tried the Parantha Thali here. The thali was huge and is sufficient for two light to normal eaters. The parathas were nice and went well with daal makhani and chhole. The taste was good but I am not sure if it is worth the hype. My most favorite part was the phirni here.

I visited a few month back and just love the typical vibe of punjab They serve an exclusive mouth-watering cuisine with the Traditional Punjabi flavor2. Their thali is one of the most delicious preparations offered by any of the oldest dhabas in India I have ordered lachha Paratha, Palak Paneer , famous Kali dal of the Kesar dhaba the quality and the quantity of the food is super delicious also been to the kitchen and amazed to see the preparation of dal which has lots pof ghee and open chulhe ki naan Dil khush ho gaya i can still feel the taste ...if you are planning to have a lunch over here, i would suggest don't eat anything beafore that because this desi treat is very heavy and wholesome. meal is not complete without the desserts ..i had a yummy phirni fab clouser of my lunch. Bit Over priced service is good Good hygiene

This is definitely one of the best restaurants in the world according to me. I love going to Amritsar just to have a meal at this place. The staff is amazing, they're always able to help with the menu, the vibe is great, and the food is obviously the showstopper. In my humble opinion, going to Amritsar, and not having a meal at this place should be a capital crime. 😅❤️ Do try the firni and the paan when you get out of the restaurant as well.

I saw such a rush for the first time in life, people used to take tokens and wait outside in street. We have to wait 75 minutes before entry. The taste of food is unique at affordable prices. Service is average. I advise to take away and enjoy at your comfort.

I live very close to this place and we often visit here. What a wonderful place. You will get traditional tasty delicious food here. Variety of desi dishes. Lachha prantha with lots of desi ghee ummm yummmm. Makhani dal with tadka you will love it after trying it. Though crowdy it offers quality and quantity in a balanced way. Go guys go and have this wonderful food. You will love this place. Enjoyyyy

One of my favorite dhaba in Amritsar. Food over here is bestest I've had. Food is prepared with desi ghee.

The real deal.... over a century old dhaba. I live in patiala and whenever i go to Amritsar two things are mandatory first is the Shri Harmandir Sahib ji visit and then going to Kesar da dhaba. The food here is still made in only desi gheo and the taste is unmatched. They have managed to capture the old punjabi food taste perfectly. It is a Pure Veg and i am sure than non vegetarians will rarely complain after having there delicious veg food. I personally love the dal and Lachha Parantha combo.

It is one of the most iconic place to be visited, visited with my friends, ordered dal makhni, paneer pratha, lachcha prantha and the food is delicious, best place to eat near golden temple
Pushpender
We went on this iconic place with my friends. After golden temple visit. In evening around 6-7’o clock . Good this is that there were no crowd when we reached. We get table easily. Now come to food we order dal makhni ,palak paneer, laccha parantha and kheer in dessert.

Every thing is awesome but I like palak paneer it was amazing!!
Palak paneer is must try item.

THE BEST FOOD I HAVE EVER EATEN. Was my first time in Amritsar and this was a definite place on my list of places to visit (but ofc after visiting the Gurudwar Harmandir Sahib... Waheguru 🙏🏽). It is not a place easily found. You’ve to ask the locals or ise Maps. Best DAL I’ve ever eaten. I don’t like Palak Paneer, but I had it here. I became a fan! Aloo Gobhi was superb, the Laccha Paratha was god like. Mannnn... i can go on and on and on. My friend (who is a South Indian) was feeling like crying. He said he won’t eat a better veg meal ever. I second that. No way this place can be missed. Just don’t expect a fancy ambience. Go there and let the food take your taste buds to Heaven.

Amazing place with authentic taste
Chole and dal makani is amazing
Must try place as they serving us from last 100 years yes 100 years you heard it right
If at Amritsar it is a must visit place ❤️
Best dal makhini ever. This iconic joint in Amritsar lives upto its hype. The dal makhini is loaded with butter and tastes delicious. Aur with that have some butter soaked Naan and kulche. You may have to wait for some time but food is worth the wait.

Whenever I use to google best place to eat at Amritsar, kesar da dhaba always popped out in top 10.
So as foodie and zeal to explore food we went on the 1st day of our Amritsar tour and it was disappointing.
Ambience was ok , but the food was not ok.
Neither the chole sabzi nor kali dal was good.
We didn't understood the taste it was full of oil and buttery.
It didn't had its own taste .
Lassi was creamy and extra sweet .
Firni was the surprising element and they put some vanilla essence to change the overall taste.
Overall the experience was not good.
Expectations were high but it disappointed us.

If you are in amritsar, make sure you don't miss this dhaba to dine in. Expect a very basic set up and reasonably priced dishes. The thalis are really great, sarso ka saag is the highlight on the menu. Authentic amritsari food is what they specialise in with no compromise on taste and quality. Malai Lassi is also a must try, sweet but yummy.

If you're in Amritsar don't miss out on this place called "Kesar Da Dhaba". It's very famous amongst the tourists. We have this delicious mixed parantha thali for Rs. 295/-

In pic: Aloo & Gobi ke paranthe, Chole ki sabji & sarsoon da saag.

Ambience is average & service is excellent.

Food is 🔥

#eatstreetmumbai #review

This place is worth all the hype, the food is not only tasty but also on a very lighter side.
I personally loved the Phirni.

Kesar da Dhaba is known for delicacies prepared in pure Desi Ghee. It serves authentic punjabi food in a traditional setting.
I tried their kadai paneer, matar pulao and firni. Everything was delicious, a bit heavy though. The flavors were perfectly balanced. Sweetness of firni was not overpowering.
It was a lovely meal. Must try from my side. ✨

Kesar the dhaba is all worth the hype . The food is yum yum in taste .it leaves the customer finger licking and portion with quality of food served all worth the bucks

Much awaited trip in January. We went to Amritsar trip in January and first thing we did after checking in is to visit Kesar da dhaba. We went on Saturday afternoon and managed to get a table because we went a bit early.

We ordered Palak paneer, Aloo ghobi and Dal makhani along with lassi. Personally, I don't like green gravy much but this one was different. It was raw, buttery and tasty. And it's not a place if you are calorie cautious :). Dal makhani was tasty and well cooked. Aloo ghobi was good but nothing exceptional. Lachha paratha was big and crispy. We then ordered aloo paratha and it was just amazing. Tasty, crispy and soft inside. We kept ordering more parathas from aloo to ghobi to paneer along with more lassis. Must try.

Overall the food was typical dhaba style. Buttery, raw and tasty. Service is real quick. Don't have much expectations on ambience or hygiene. You should just ignore those points if you want to visit local dhabas in old parts of city like Amritsar.

Ordered Lacha Paratha, Rajma, Palak Paneer & Lassi. No parking space available, so better prefer an erickshaw. Found table easily without long wait. Had to be shared with other family due to space constraint. The restaurant is since decades so high time that the management should renovate the interiors especially make seating more comforable and less cramped and kitchen area more hygenic and utility high. I will rate as following:

Taste:3.5/5
Service: 5/5
Seating Ambience 3/5

A must visit for anybody who goes to Amritsar...Those huge parathas were something to go crazy for..and not to forget the super thick tall lassi..

Kulcha & Palak Paneer @ Kesar Da Dhaba, Town Hall, Amritsar

Taste - 5, Quantity - 5, Quality - 5, Hygiene - 4, Service - 5, Ambiance - 4, Price - Decent

Verdict - Must Eat This

Kesar Da Dhaba is a landmark in the food history of Amritsar. We had to be here.

The dhaba is serving lip smacking food since decades. We ordered Aloo Kulcha & Lachcha Paratha with Rajma & Palak Paneer. The Kulcha was amazingly soft, buttery & had delicious stuffing. The Lachcha paratha was flaky and soft. Rajma was good but the Palak Paneer really stole the show. Palak Paneer had this earthy & smoky flavor making it astonishing.

Two words - Must visit.

#musteatthis #amritsar #punjab #punjabi #goldentemple #kulcha #kesar #kesardadhaba #punjabifood #streetfood #foodblogger #foodgasm #foodporn #craving

This place might be century old so is the hype about this place. I have been there for a lunch, trust me it's not worthy to pay visit. The food here is quite OK not anywhere being good. Give a thought before spending Rupees 350 approx for a person.

Being on an Amritsar trip, how would I not try the famous kesar da dhaba..! It's about a century old restaurant in the narrow lanes of Amritsar.

If you want to find a table soon here, I would recommend to visit this place during the lunch timing because visiting this place in the evening and finding a table is a difficult task. You would usually end up waiting for table like about 45 minutes.

And yes forget about your diet plan if you are visiting this place. Every paratha and delicacy would be filled with butter, providing you with the taste of Punjab.
Superb experience and awesome taste.

A must must try when in Amritsar! A heaven for all the food lovers. You like Palak or not don’t forget to try palak paneer and laccha paratha.

A trip to the Holy City Amritsar is incomplete without a visit to iconic Kesar Da Dhaba!!! Its a big big big MUST GO! Quite an old and historic place now, situated in the super narrow lanes of Town Hall of Amritsar. No matter what time you go to this place, you will end up waiting in long queues and a for almost 45 - 60 mins but guess what it’s totally worth the wait.!

When we finally managed to go in and get a table for ourselves, I got confused with so many delicious things in the menu! We ended up ordering their famous Thali, Ajwaini Lachha paranthas, Dal makhni, lassi, all of which were delectable. Paranthas were very crisp with all the layers laden with butter and ghee, of course too fattening!
:p

And after all this, one big mandate that no matter what you have to try is their PHIRNI. Probably, this is the best Phirni is whole world!!! I bet, you will end up ordering 2-3 plates each!

So, its a MUST GO, higly recommended place to Go!

Happy Eating! :)
Madhavi Kapadia
Overhyped. Ordered Mattar Paneer and dal fry with Missi roti. The roti was good but the mattar paneer was bland. Dal was overhyped too. There are better dhabas near the temple area.

This Place is a Must visit while in Amritsar. The thali served here is properly appropriated with Ghee and Most of the Flavours of Punjab. It is a great place. They do-not have wide variety. But their Tastes are as it is.

Quite an old dhaba situated in the Town Hall of Amritsar. There’s always a long queue and a waiting of almost 45 mins no matter what day or time but it’s totally worth the wait.
When we finally went it and started placing our order they told us most of the things weren’t available, maybe because it was late in the night so we ordered from the list of items available. We ordered lachha paranthas which came with paneer, chhole and daal, all of which were delectable. The paranthas were heavy but you can’t just have one. It was crisp with all the layers laden with butter and ghee.
This place is a must visit for a real taste of Punjab.

The 100 year old Kesar the dhaba is a place to die for.
True place for Desi ghee lovers..Dal makhni and palance paneer are out of this world..best I ever had.
So We ordered the paratha Thali - it had dal makhni full of ghee, chana, granita and salad with 2 paratha.. u can choose with plain paratha or aalo paratha..
One can also choose the non fry dal makhni for less ghee..but I would prefer the fry dal makhni since its ro die for..!
The paratha is so crisp and delicious.
There is no parking around this place and it's a little on the inside so prefer a rickshaw.
Place :10/10
Vaibhav Sawhney
Can't understand why this place is so highly rated. The food is terrible, overloaded with ghee, and devoid of any flavour. And not even remotely close to authentic Punjabi food. Avoid.
Pritpal Ganger
Excellent kaali daal, chole (super soft), Kulcha and aloo paratha.
Sitting like a canteen or tiffin service area - though must visit place for awesome taste and experience

Highly overrated
Chatkara Meter
Well what to say about this place. A trip to Amritsar is incomplete without a visit to the legendary Kesar da dhaba. When ever u plan to visit there must have is their daal which cooks for 12 hours and is much better then daal Bukhara at ITC Maurya. Another must try is Chole along with your choice of bread though I like Lacha Parantha.

Place is always crowded and only complain is they should have a waiting list or token system to get the guest sit there

Food - 5/5
Ambience - NA
Service - 4/5
Value for Money - 5/5

Overall on Chatkara Meter - 5/5

This place is worth once a visit. While you go, make sure you have enough time at hand. Waiting time is too long. Don’t go by car, roads are too narrow. Bit overrated. Food taste is good. If you’re Health freak, you may not like due to oil content in the items. Worth once visit..
Note: carry cash, card not accepted; nor wallets/ gpay.

You cannot skip this place if you are in Amritsar! One of the oldest and most popular food outlets around serving authentic Punjabi food!.. Always on my bucket list.. We ordered the traditional Aaloo Paratha and Paneer paratha which was served with Chole (love) ...Although the taste was nice, they use excess of ghee (delight for ghee lovers but not something we prefer!). It is also located in the interiors but anyone you ask on the streets will happily guide you to the place!..Must visit for the sheer vibe of the place!
Paritosh Sawant
Its customary to go here if ur visiting Amritsar.. we asked for a paratha thali with one aloo and one gobi paratha.. its served with choley and dal .. the gobi paratha was really good... and the choley were amazing.. even the pain kulcha was lovely.. the paratha is dripping with ghee.. but in that weather it was good.. the black dal too was very tasty.. also had a gulab jamun which was pretty good..
Palvinder Singh
Most overrated eating joint of India. I went there last week, had Lacha parantha, dal fry, kadhai paneer and Lacha parantha. As soon as I started eating, dal & paneer were cold, told them to atleast re heat before serving.
Talking about the food, it was just regular home made style food absolutely nothing special. Price is on higher side, 250 + tax for a bowl of paneer-capsicum sabzi is not worth at all.
Real example of unchi dukan feeka pakwan.
Ketan Food & Lifestyle
Totally a hyped up place. Surely the food is good. Tastes amazing. But there were way better places than this.
Jayesh Singh
A nice place to have a good meal in Amritsar. Palak paneer and Dal makhni are delicacies here. Service was quite late but overall a place must to try here.

More than 100 years old legacy, Kesar da dhaba, no doubt had desi punjabi connection.
Luckily we found the table as soon as we went there, but when we came back, a lot of people were waiting outside the dhaba blocking the whole street.
Food was nice & desi (as we expected).
A lot more can be done in terms of hygiene.

The Most overhyped Eatery in the world

Location
Dilapidated building with open sewers everywhere .Welcome to Kesar Dhaba ,the most overhyped Punjabi food restaurant.
The moment you enter you realise line of peoples who have been fooled by false reviews.
Fyi The entry reminds you of Chandni Chowk only worse reason the shopkeepers have no regards to rules .You can't walk as the eletric rickshaw will crush your legs.
Only way to commute unfortunately is Rickshaw and they charge Rs 100 to 300 .

Ambience
There is no ambience.Even a bhandara on a road has more ambience than this place.
Staffs are so overworked that they are least bothered about customer service. There is no Seat booking or token system ,you have to stand in front of the seat that you intend to occupy calculating whether the existing person is completing his food.
I would rate it as the worst restaurant in terms of ambience in the known universe .

Hygiene
This is the most important reason I will not even recommend this place even to my enemy.
The wash basins are clogged,Waiters are keeping spoons in the pocket of their trouser.

Food
Lets start with each product

Dal -Full plate Rs 250 the quantity is not even a quarter plate .It is told that they heat the dal for 24 hrs ,this is a blunt lie.I can cook better Dal than Kesar Dhaba and I don't even know how to cook.
It seems that the only thing they know is to put Ghee or butter and the product will be a hit.
Dal from Gulati in Pandar Road is way better.

Paneer shahi -Same situation ,portion is meagre only ghee.Avoid like plague.

Palak Paneer -Way better than Dal but still no match for Pind Balluchi in Indirapuram.

Channa Fry - Good product when compared to any product available in Kesar Dhaba.

Parantha Aloo -Soaked with Ghee ,I wonder why they don't have Cardio Hospitals nearby.

Parantha Gobhi-Way better Paranthas are available in Rajouri Garden.

Price

Products are horrendously expensive considering the price you are paying and the risk that you are taking eating at such place.

Advice to Management

Please stop pocketing money and degrading food quality. My Grandfather used to tell me that Kesar had the best dal.It was the worst dish in the entire Kesar restaurant. I am thoroughly disappointed and would request every one to avoid this place like Plague.

The place serves amazing food!! The palak paneer and chole were absolutely delicious. Rotis/ naans are equally good. Dollops of ghee everywhere. Was slightly disappointed with the Karhi, it could have been better. The lassi after the meals is a must. The service is quick and biggest surprise come with the bill. It is dart cheap!! Must visit when one is in Amritsar.

Many of our friends and family recommended that we must visit kesar da dhaba during our visit to Amritsar. But honestly, we thought that the place is overhyped. We had better punjabi food during the trip elsewhere. Their claim to fame is that their butter and ghee is homemade and extremely fresh, which is true. However, anything in excess is undesirable. And they put excessive butter and ghee in all their dishes. the options are also very limited and a lot more can be done in terms of hygiene.

Lost the old taste...too much crowd to accommodate list of ever growing footfall.
Must have lassi n mouth freshner in end of meal 😛

I visited this place in 2018 and it was in must-try list of Amritsar. It's located in the centre of the city.
Their Palak paneer was awesome. It's was full of butter. It's the best palak paneer I had in my life though I had to drink nimbu paani to get over the buttery taste in my mouth :D

Things I tried -
Dal Makhani- 4/5
Palak Paneer- 5/5 (Must Try)
Lassi- 5/5 (Must Try)

Ambience is not so good. It's a very famous place and they are always full so I don't think they want to invest any money in it.

The most hyped restaurant, the food is not at all great as reviewed about. Thier are much better option for mind-blowing tasty food ( Newly Opened Shahi Rasoi is the best in Amritsar ) in town hall area
