Review Oh! Calcutta - Bengaluru

Susovan Ghosh
Oh! Calcutta... As we are excited to pronounce this name "oh Calcutta" but in reality it's more exciting to have dinner with such a nostalgic environment . It feels like you are having dinner at old British kolkata . Hospitality will feel like you are having food with your family members . Finally the taste of food , if you are obsessed with Bengali culture and it's food, you will definitely like this .. the taste πŸ˜‹..really it was mouthwatering ... Must visit this place ... Must try Bengali authentic foods here ... Really thankful to the chef and manager for the lovely food and hospitality.

Best place for non-veg lovers near to Bangalore Cantonment. Had Calcutta Fish Fry as starter. Chicken and Mix Veg in Main Course. After yummy meals, enjoyed famous dessert Nolen Gur Icecream and Bhapa Sandesh. Must visit this place for Non-Veg food. P.S : Experience as per 10 Oct 2019.

Bengali restaurant in the heart of bangalore. As much as the church Street is famous, Oh! Calcutta is similarly well-known for every Bengali in bangalore. To me, it is the perfect restaurant for everyone who wants to eat tasty food. There are various food items including fishes e.g. ruhi, katla, vetki, ilish. The Sorse Ilish is an excellent dish with gobindobhog rice. Try Calcutta fish fry and prawn cutlet at the time of starter. In the end, you can try rosogolla, vapa sondesh, and obviously nolen gurer ice cream. This is the first restaurant in bangalore that I find extraordinary and excellent. The taste of food, bengali emotion (background music also), and the soft behavior of all the people really make a perfect restaurant for everyone.

Food quality and atmosphere is really good and the ambience is quite excellent. Service is good but the foods are very expensive. Prices of some dishes are very high. Otherwise it's a good experience overall.

Great food, good spread in buffet. Weekends are a little crowded. The service is a little slow but they keep the buffet items hot and fresh. Its at a reasonable price , can't say the same for the a la carte menu though.

I have been so wanting to try Oh Calcutta! Great place with a very relaxed atmosphere and classy ambiance. They serve some accompaniments at the start like the chole which was a nice touch. The fish fry was quite good. The mutton biryani was very flavourful and meat was tender. Mishti doi was so good but such a tiny portion for that price. Service was very good and professional. Portion size could be looked into as pricing is high. Ambiance - 4/5 Service - 4/5 Food Quality/ Presentation - 4/5 Taste - 4.5/5 Portion Size - 3.5/5 Value for money - 3.5/5

The best restaurant in town for authentic, fresh, and delicious Bengali food. We visited during Pujo and there was a special buffet. We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and Bengali food never tasted this good. There were plenty of options even for vegetarians. The price for the buffet was reasonable considering the wide variety of food on offer. The service was good. Waiters and servers were polite, friendly, and catered to all our requests. The atmosphere was sober and the spirit of festivity lingered gingerly in the air. Will definitely visit the restaurant again and would highly recommend it to anyone craving Bengali food or anyone wanting to try authentic Bengali food for the first time.

Recently tried out the Hilsa meal box containing Ilish Paturi [2 Pcs] + Ilish Beguner Jhol [2 Pcs] + Aloo Phoolkopir Dalna + Bhaja Moonger Daal + Aloo Bhaja + Steamed Rice + Tomato Khejurer Chutney + Chaler Payesh + Malpua [2 Pcs], and oh my god it was so delicious that I can't express it in words. Being a Bengali myself, I was jumping with joy to encounter such a brand which serves authentic Bengali food in all its glory. The taste and presentation of the food was top notch and I still can't stop thinking about the amazing meal I had. The Ilish paturi has a perfect blend of flavours, reminded me of home. The Moonger daal was so amazing and went so well with aloo bhaja and steamed rice. And how coulda Bengali meal end without sweets, completely fell in love with their payesh and malpua. I strongly recommend this place if you want to try out some authentic Bengali food. Totally loved it and the packaging is quite perfect too.

This one is located on church street and is just perfect if you want to try authentic Bengali cuisine. I was visiting on a Sunday for the lunch buffet. The menu has multiple options in veg and non veg from appetisers to main course to desert. The restaurant staff is super courteous and very helpful. They have a valet parking as well. The spread contains multiple items starting from luchi, begun bhaja, cholar dal, chochori, aloo meethi, Data bori jhol, potol posto, kosha mangsho, mutton er jhol, fish fry, lau chingri, Plain rice, Polau, Rosogolla and Gurer payesh, Papad, Chatni and Aam Panna(complimentary). The food was very tasty and my top picks would be lau chingri, potol posto, kosha mangsho and mutton. Overall a very good place and I would revisit for sure. They have brought out a complicated cuisine in a simple and sophisticated way. Kudos!

Great place for trying out authentic Bengali food in Bengaluru. The taste is really good, specially the chicken biryani which is a must have . The price is a bit high ,but the taste makes up for it .

The best place to have Bengali food in Bangalore. I have tried in many places but this remains the best in case of everything. All the dishes are authentic. Very tasty. Not that rich. The hosts are very generous and helpful. Overall a great experience. Over the years I have tried , Murshidabadi murghi fry, Aam kashundi kankra, daab chingri, murghir jhol, pabdar tel borir jhal, pabdar tomato jhal, nolengurer Sandesh, dhonepata murghi, Kolkata fish fry, chicken biriyani etc. all of them were equally good and very tasty. Even the cocktails and mocktails were very tasty. They have a separate parking place to park in the busy church street. The ambience is also very good. You will get a partial feeling of Kolkata. Specially the Rabindra Sangeet. The printed plates (new addition). The photo frames of Bengals famous personalities. It’s my go to go place frequently. Highly recommended.

Visited last year for the Durga Puja spread. Left with quite a satisfied tummy πŸ’› Whenever I crave some Bengali food in Bangalore, this is the place you’ll find me at.
Tulika
Spoilt, rotting, Hilsa was delivered. This is a serious health and safety risk and it is shocking that the restaurant has such poor food safety standards.
Abhijat Mitra
Went after lockdown. Good arrangements with all service staff in masks and face shields. Felt safe.
Coming to food everything was good with the starters being the standouts. Murshidabad chicken was great. Unique preparation. Very good fish paturi too. Outstanding. Mains were competent with staples like kosha mangsho and malai kari. If I were to split hairs then the luchis could have been done a bit better. (Some were limp) Good nolengur icecream but at that price point I was expecting two scoops. Does not take away from the meal experience. Keep it up.

One of the best place to eat if your pocket permits, I prefer to have buffet lunch, being a bong food lover it matches with my balance sheet perfectly. You can enjoy the food with your family.

Not even closer to what Kolkata Biryani is. Tasted like Masala Rice. Chicken was too bad as well. A disgrace to Oh ! Calcutta and more to Kolkata Biryani. Disgusting !!!!!!!!
SENARITRA DAS
Mutton biriyani was tasteless ,too much masala nd salt. Chicken nd desserts were good
Priyajit Mitra
Today we went for lunch, after long lockdown we came here, they are taking all precautions, restaurant was almost empty, order here mutton kassa, luchi, chicken item and pulao. Everything was great in taste, really love there good.
Soumick Sinha
Delicious bengali food that made me remember Kolkata delicacies. Would highly recommend trying out the nolengurer ice cream. The Bengali songs playing in the background make it an ideal place to reminisce about Kolkata & enjoy the food.
Manishita
Ordered Kolkata style chicken biryani. Your Kolkata style chicken biryani is very spicy and Kolkata Biryani is known only for its sweetness, meetha ittar, kewra water which was missing in your biryani. Therefore, stop fooling customers saying it as Kolkata Biryani.

This restaurant has a pleasant atmosphere but located in a crowded area.
The food is slightly over priced and lacks the real authentic flavour of the food it claims.
You could visit this place if you are searching for something new.

Why so much pricing of ur menu???? U r not 5 star delux hotel... stop chitting people... u r not that much good restaurant chain. Stop looting guest.

Went with my family!! Bongs love food and food loves them back. This place offers tasty authentic Bengali food and leaves you with a mesmerizing taste effect.

The taste of all the dishes is authentic. They have many options. Sweets, starters or main course , you won't be disappointed.

The only thing is it pinches ur pocket hard.. lil costly but worth a visit when u r Missing authentic Bengali food β™₯️

Visited my favourite place Oh Calcutta on Saturday afternoon along with my parents. We were warmly welcomed by Mr Ramakant and Mr Debasish.Today we took buffet and along with that I ordered their legendary Kosha Mangsho separately.Mr Debasish immediately arranged hot luchis for us.Special thanks to him as Kosha Mangsho goes best with hot luchis. In buffet, chicken tandoori in starters was extremely awesome and in main course, grand trunk chicken, railway mutton curry, shorshe pabda prawn curry were excellent.Im veg section paneer, aloo dum, echor, begun bhaja and especially bhuttar chop were great. We also took our all time favourite aam pora shorbot.Every dish had it's own speciality in terms of the traditional Bengali cuisine...the taste of joy...straight to Bangalore ...from Kolkata with love. The cordiality of Mr Debasish and Mr Ramakant deserve special mention.Thank you Oh Calcutta for being here in Bangalore for the Bengalees.Keep shining in all your glory.

I went with extreme high hopes for the food since I am a Bengali and have been dining in oh Calcutta for a very long time. The kosha mangsho was overly sweet and the biryani lacked flavour. The food did not taste bad, it was just that it did not feel like authentic Bengali food.
What I must add is that ramakant the manager took extra care of us, and took the feedback sincerely. I Extremely greatful to him and will still return to dine here because of his efforts to improve our meal experience.
Meenakshi Nambiar
We went on a Saturday for the lunch buffet and it says a lot about a restaurant specializes in Bengali cuisine and messes up the rosogolla. It was rock hard, less said about the malpua the better. The paayesh was the only saving grace.
The limited starters were a joke, the main course did manage to salvage an otherwise disappointing lunch. The rohu fish curry was exceptional as was the posto and cauliflower sabji.
Maybe the Sunday lunch is much better but at almost Rs 1,000/person one expects a better variety of desserts and starters.
Deepak Sahu
Most of dishes are not available they push you for buffet.
Shubhajit Dutta
This is just a mediocre Bengali restaurant. The taste is not authentic. Mutton kasha was too oily. Fish fry was not authentic. Fish Paturi and Murgh malai tikka were just β€˜good’. Service is slow. There is better Bengali restaurant than this one in Bangalore. At one point, we were thinking that probably we can make the same dishes better ourselves at home.πŸ€”
Shradha Mohanty
Mutton biriyani. With potatoes πŸ₯”. Heavenly!
Priya Paramita Paul
The food was not upto the mark... it was not bengali cuisine

It was a fine dining, what we enjoyed most.
The delicacy, the courteous staff, the atmosphere added spice to our enjoyment.
Thanks a lot for the memories of taste.

Rating:
Menu and Taste : 5/5 (authentic Bengali Taste),
Staff Behaviour: 5/5. ( Follow their instructions for best food combination),
Atmosphere: 4/5.

A delicious food joint for Bengali cuisine in Bangalore. There buffet itmes are really good. It'll start with welcome drinks Aam panna. Then you'll get 4 starters, 5 veg & 5 non veg main courses. In starters dim devil, pulkopir bora, alu posto, sukto are proper and tastes appropriate. Among main course special mentions are chittagong chicken, mutton curry, Rui sorse, prawns pallong and Ilish macher mathar chaccori. Uff the last one is the best πŸ˜‹. And last not the least 5 desserts like payes, rasogolla, malpoa but the man of the match is bhapa sandesh that's must try. Very professional staffs are there to help you always. Overall excellent.
Saroni Bhattacharya
The food is delicious here. Perfect authentic Bengali cuisine. Staffs are very polite and friendly. Ambience is great. But I wish they hire more staffs. Because just on days when the restaurant is packed, they move things at a snail’s pace.

The buffet they are serving here in durga puja is excellent. Never thought Oh! Calcutta could be do good.
Rahul Mukerji
We tried the buffet. Lets start with positive: Fish fry- lovely. Though it was not the Bengali version but still tasted good. The veg items like shukto n dhokar dalna were lovely. However, the traditional bengali fish items like Chingri Malaikali was turned into Thai Red curry. Pathar mangsher jhol was bordering towards bland. Bashanti polao was no way near authentic. First time saw peas in bengali polao. Now since I am from Bengal this last section of desserts is very close to my heart. But this was utter disappointment. The sweets seemed straight out of can. There was no effort to hide the fact that they were not fresh. Now if I am paying premium pricing for delicacies close to my heart, the quality is expected. But the experience was rather shoddy. One more thing which makes a Bengali buffet dining experience most exciting is that at the end of the meal you get to wash your hands in a hot water bowl with gondhoraj lebu which acts as a hand sanatizer to mask the non veg smell. More that gondho lingers more it reminds you of the extraordinary bhojon. Surprisingly this was also missing. This is in stark contrast to the main outlet of the chain in Kolkata where the experience was quite the opposite. Thus my utter disappointing experience with this joint is depicted in the rating.

Ashtami in Bangalore and pre booking in Oh Calcutta. A special buffet menu due to the festive season and almost every item was either or not upto the standards of 1250 INR (+ tax). The fish fry which I so badly wanted to savour, turned out to be Basa fillets. The mutton - old goats slaughtered and cooked resulting in chewy meat. The Prawn Malaikari - Shrimps from IFB packets poured into (supposed) Malaikari. The first and last visit to this money minting place which virtually has no intend to serve their customers. This is definitely not the Calcuttan Oh Calcutta, that I once knew - Horrible!

Excellent Bong Buffet in Asthami
Suchit Agarwala
They serve authentic Bengali food. Went here on the day of mahalaya. We didn't know that they had buffet that day. I must say that buffet was costly (930 with tax), but the food was awesome. They had so many varieties of dishes not even a single dish disappointed us. From simple mashed potatoes to chicken kosha. So i will say the amount paid was nearly worth it. The place was filled with bong people and we had to wait for an empty table. Even the service was good. Though the place is not fancy or themed, but decent ambience.

We went on a Sunday afternoon to taste authentic Bengali food. I felt the buffet is overpriced in which they are serving just a single fish named Rui(Rohu). I expected the buffet to have a better spread in terms of number of fish delicacies when the charges are so high (Closed to 950 including GST). We ordered an ilish (as they said ilish festival is going on). The sorshe (mustard) ilish was stale and pathetic in taste. It was replaced by begun (Eggplant) ilish after we complained about the sorshe ilish. Is this expected from a dish that is priced 595. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. I felt this particular franchise is diminishing the name and brand of Oh! Calcutta.
Sudip Dasgupta
We took bengali buffet and it had variety of authentic bengali veg and nonveg items with sublime taste. Happy to be there.

This was my first visit to Oh Calcutta in Bangalore but I am quite certain that I would be going again very soon .. As usual with Oh Calcutta.. the decor was nice and simple, staff well trained and courteous and food was outstanding.. We had ordered Hilsa Fish fingers as a starter ... an unusual dish as I have never known fish fingers to be made with Hilsa... We were tempted to repeat, but refrained in the interest of enjoying the other Hilsa dishes.. For the main course we ordered the ever good Hilsa Fry ... they served it with fried Hilsa Eggs and fried green chillies... it was really good, thereafter we ordered Hilsa Begun Kalo Jire Jhol, which was a killer... We finished our meal with a round of Nolen Gurer Icecream with a generous extra helping of Nolen Gur (Date Palm Jaggery)..

Special mention of our attendant Ramakant.. he took very good care of us and made our dining experience memorable... I look forward to visiting them soon ..

The ambience is alright. The service was a little slow but god! The food was amazing.
We had a dab chingri which was a little creamier than usual but it made the taste even more delicious. We also had a grand trunk chicken which was really well made. It wasn't heavy and was very flavoursome.
For dessert, I wanted a mishti doi but sadly they were out of it so I had a rasogulla, rasmalai and malpua instead. Both the desserts were alright but not great. I've definitely had better of them both.
Rahul
Firstly the service here is exceptional. We were here mainly to have Kolkata style biryani . Along with it we had Bhetki fry . The fish tasted fresh, it did not have the frozen fish taste . We ended our dinner with Misti dohi , which was mediocre . The overall experience was pleasant , however being a Bengali food fan myself , the flavour could be enhanced a bit .

One of the best places for authentic bengali food. The occasional buffet in β‚Ή1000 is more than enough to fill your Bengali tommy as well as emotions
Pinki Banik
Ordered ilish paturi. It was tasteless. I think the cook forgot to put salt and instead used sugar to prepare the paturi. Oh!Calcutta has really deteriorated in its food quality and seems it is not really keen to maintain it's standard. Felt it was waste of money.
This place is a good heaven for all the people who love Bengali food. The ambience is really good and the food is amazing. Can't get enough of the food here. I am a regular to this place now. A good place to have a meal with family.
A special mention to the bhapa sandesh. I always have it when I go to this place.
My personal favorite is sweet kaju kismis Pulao and chicken curry. In starters my favorite is Murshidabadi chicken. The fish preparation is also authentic and lip smacking.
Everything on the menu is delicious. The service is prompt and the staff is very friendly.
Cheers to the Oh! Calcutta team for the amazing food and service. They don't fail to live up to their name.
Will keep going back to this place!

Wanted to try the authentic Bengali cuisine since a long time and finally found a great place for the same in Church Street the other day. Went here pretty late for dinner and even though it was closing time, they were kind enough to let us have the meal. The ambience was a pretty basic one like that of a fine dine. We ordered Ilisher fish fingers with Mayo mustard chutney. Absolutely loved this starter. The fish was cooked perfectly in a typical Bengali style with all the required flavours and tasted amazing with the Mayo mustard chutney.
The next one was Calcutta Fish fry which I must say is their speciality and should be definitely on your table every time you visit this place.
Then Kakra chingri Bhapa which was served wrapped in a banana leaf, another great order.
However we were expecting a bit more out of gobindobogher bhat and pressure cooker mangshor jhol, but it was as ordinary as it could get.
Overall a great experience, if you wanna try the authentic Bengali cuisine, this is the place you should visit.
Ankita Parashar
I went to this place for a Saturday lunch with family and we opted for buffet. It had a good spread of veg and non-veg main courses . There were 2 starters in each section which I initially thought was too few a number. However, as I started to experience the food and the taste I was more than fine with it. The fish, prawns, chicken ,mutton and crab were amazingly tasty. I wanted to eat more but couldn't due to space constraints in my tummyπŸ˜… and hence didn't taste the veg main course. The best part- food was less oily. The mustard chutney was too good. I left wanting to eat more . The staff was courteous. I will definitely come back soon. The ambience is fine and not too lavish.

This was my fourth visit to Oh! Calcutta and as usual I was not disappointed. The food is excellent as is the ambience and service. Love the authenticity of the flavours. More than anything, Oh! Calcutta is one of the few restaurants that has a digital menu and a visual of all food items. Will surely come back!!!

Located on Church Street on the second floor above Mainland China, Oh! Calcutta is a fine dine restaurant which specialises in Bengali food.

I visited this place on a Monday to try their special menu curated by Chef Anjan Chatterjee for the HILSA festival going on there.

We started with some aam porar sharbat along with gondharaj paneer tikka, mochar chop which was made from banana flower, kakra Chingri bhapa made from crabs and prawns and it was my favourite the way it was steamed and soft to perfection. We also had the Ilisher fish finger served along with kasondi.

Heading to the main course, we had the very famous kosha mangsho which was a bit sweet but tasted really well. Then we had the Posto Narkol Ilish and Meghna majhidar Ilish which was the showstopper of the night. We ate all this along with luchi and steamed rice.

Finally full, we ended our dinner with the rossogulla and bhapa sondesh which was aptly sweet from the dessert section.

If you are a Bengali and looking for the queen of the fish, head to this place straight away. And even if you aren't a Bengali and love fish but hate the bones in it like me, go try their menu because they have boneless options also!

We had opted for buffet in Oh Calcutta . They had limited number of dishes in starters, main course and desserts. Taste was also not good. I had gone to Oh Calcutta outlet in Kolkata and food was great there but to my surprise, Bangalore outlet is the opposite. Highly Disappointed with the taste of the food.
Nikhil Vashishtha
Great food, nostalgic experience, helpful and humble staff, fish starters were great, the coconut rice main course dish was sweet and aromatically well -balanced and spiced.

I learnt for the first time that the staff in a restaurant can be so rude to it's customers, courtesy of this 'speciality' restaraunt. I thought this was a problem with that single person but when other members of the staff turned away their heads even after waving at them and requesting them for water, I knew for sure that I made a mistake by choosing this restaurant. Forget a smile you will not even get a nod from them when you call them. They just look at you and walk away. I hoped at least the food would be amazing. But no. The portion size is the least I have ever seen in any restaurant. We ordered a regular chicken gravy and it was not sufficient for just 2 of us. It was not sufficient for 1 naan and 1 kulcha. The taste too is nothing special. Pretty much any restaraunt in Bangalore serves food which is equal or better than this. The only thing we found good was the ordering system. Instead of regular menu cards you are given tablets with images of the dishes. This makes sure there are no surprises later. Also the nor gulen ice cream was pretty good with jaggery flavour. The ambience however was mediocre and nothing special. There were brown spots on the roof and wall due to water leakage. Plus the lif too wasn't working. Not something you expect from a restaurant which demands a hefty bill at the end of your meal. You must be wondering how such a shabby restaurant has a decent rating. Maybe it's because homesick bengali folk who miss their home cuisine rate it high due to nostalgia. Or else there are hundreds of restaurants in the city which are way better in terms of taste, ambiance, service and pricing. One of the worst dining experiences I had in a long long time. Giving a rating of 1 star for the first time. And hopefully the last too.
Aswin VK
This was my first experience in Oh Calcutta and all I can say is 'Oh! What an experience'. From fish fingers to bhapa ilish it was a treat for the pallete. The railway mutton curry was the best shot. This place should definitely be in your go to list our you're looking for authentic Bengali food in Bangalore. The quality of food is pretty good, and the place has a nice and calm ambience. Don't miss the Calcutta fish fry and bhapa shondesh.

Oh! Calcutta is best in Bangalore to have bengali cuisine. Food quality is tremendous but alacarte is very slow so go for buffet. We ordered food and they served very late but their behaviour was very good.

This quintessential Bengali eatery in the heart of Bangalore fills every Bong with a sense of nostalgia. Right from the mesmerizing tunes of Rabindra Sangeetha playing in the background to pictures of some prominent Bengalis on the walls, Oh! Calcutta brings Bangaliyana with its heart n soul.
Some of my favorite dishes were the Movhar chip, nad Aam Kasundi chana, as starters. For main course, luchi and kosha mangsho are to die for. Also, the combination of Gobindhobhog er chaal and daab chingri fills both your heart and stomach. For dessert, bhapa shondesh was scrumptious. I wholeheartedly recommend every Bengali to try this place once and assure no regret.
