Steamed rice, fish curry and Unicorn special Prawn masala, with a little rasam! Simple hearty and wholesome. It’s what you want when out with a bunch of 6 kids. But at 550 per plate it’s a tad expensive, but it’s also so fresh and enticing that you tend to leave the place with a wallet so light, yet with a smile on your face.

Amazing seafood! Truly a legendary place.

Highly recommend their Unicorn Spl. Prawns, Crab and other seafood offerings.

We went here as it was a recommended ‘legendary’ Bangalore eatery but it is one of the most disappointing food experience I’ve had.
Their famous crab chilli hardly had any crab - only onions
Their fish tikka was too fishy and not as well seasoned for a dish that was priced at 650 bucks! Biryani was random too!
Ghee roast chicken and appams is what saved us - won’t recommend this place at all - they need to step up in terms of flavour, service and decor even!

This place is a gem for seafood. Really good fish fry and appam. 😍 Serves alcohol so makes it even better. Prawns rava fry, dosa and chicken curry are some must haves here 🤗 One of the best places in town for sea food. Yummza

This place is legendary, the ambience is not great but the food is outstanding, I highly recommend the following, lady fish fry, unicorn special prawn, neer dosa, lady fish curry.
I repeat again the food is outstanding!!

Had prawns, kalamari, ghee roast prawns. Awesome food quality and ambience. Staff very courteous and prompt delivery service. Went today for first time and totally recommend to a seafood foodie.
Kanishk Ravindran
Expensive and overated. Although this restaurant has a historical value the service is not upto the mark. Although the food is amazing and tends to satisfy every taste bud. Overall good experience.
Hungry_bear
Quality is progressively declining to the extent that precooked stale chicken is being immersed in gravies for main course. Management needs to wake up before they close down for business because of poor ratings

Easily my favourite place for seafood in Bangalore. It's still got the old school bar and restaurant kind of vibe, almost as if time has stopped!

Kaane rava fry, pomphret, unicorn special prawn, pepper prawns and crab masala are among my favourite dishes here. The catch seems to be fresh and cooked the way we like it. We usually start with fish and prawn starters over a few drinks and then move on to Neer Dosa and crab masala. It's a combination you simply must try 😋

I prefer my crab masala with shell than without. It's quite a task to break open and eat but I feel you get more flavour with the shell.

You must start your meal with crab soup! It's so simple yet full of flavour. It's just simple broth with a few fresh chunks of crab meat! Or a glass of hot and spicy rasam.

And we end every meal with a plate of Raagi Manni - not too sweet and just enough for us 4 :)

This place truly triggered the "Ghar ka khana" (at its best) feeling. Prawns I prefer when it's not flour coated and is well fried in good spices which I got out here, the "PRAWN FRY". The "UNICORN SPECIAL CRAB MASALA" not sure if it's a Goan or Mangalorian inspired flavor(red masala+onions) but when had with "NEER DOSA" it was a perfect blend!! The spicy crab masala and the simple neer dosa seems to be a must try out here as for once it made me attack the food before clicking a pic 😜 Better to reach the place early to get a table easily. And be prepared to put on some patience for the good food to reach your table. Bon appetit! 😁

Like a blast from the past this is a very old school restaurant serving up good costal food without any fuss. The portions are decent taste is predictable and service old school but prompt. You go here for a nostalgic trip down memory lane.

This place is known for crab 🦀 soup and prawns 🍤 fry. Which are delectable and make you feel like visiting this place very often. They are very consistent with the taste. Though it’s a Mangalore style restaurant you do get North Indian roti as well. Slightly over priced. Ambience is mediocre. Staffs are good.

A restaurant which has been around for a few years and is known for its mangalorean cuisine- still retains its old menu card but not really the flavours .. still would recommend to try the fish , Prawns or the mutton .. not recommended for Vegetarians

Prawns were delicious ..egg ghee roast could have been better...appams were good.. I would go again ...prawns special was the highlight...good service

Undoubtedly the best sea food in Central Bangalore. The Unicorn special crab and the Unicorn special prawn is my all time favorite. It is a must have when visiting the place.

It has a simple ambience, but the attraction here is the sea food. Wine and beer are served here.
Vaman Prabhu
Had been here for dinner today. I must say the ambience of restaurant is bad and the prices are on the higher end. Had ordered for prawn ghee roast as this place is known for sea food, unfortunately what they had served wasn't ghee roast as there was no ghee. The whole preparation was in oil, which was disappointing.
Rajesh Rajaram
Been a favorite of mine since the early 90's... I really don't know why they have a Chinese and north Indian menu... their mangalorean/karwar food is fantastic. Order the Unicorn special prawns, Kubay Chilli, crab sukka and kane fry. Eat with rice and fish gravy. they don't have a bar anymore... just wine. Ambiance is crap, unsophisticated good service, place is clean.

Was in Bangalore for a short holiday when I visited this place. The ambience is awesome with big fish tanks and great seats. The food is also very tasty. Loved their sea food.
Richard Rajan
Awesome unicorn prawn spl.. it is truely a delicacy in itself. It is awesome.

Love the prawns ghee roast as well which goes well with neer dosa or kerala parottas

Had the tried the chicken biryani, it is different and tasty good pieces of chicken but then it isnt a classic

So the only drawer to unicorn would be its prawns spl... quantity is reduced and it is sad that places reduce quamtity or quality of their signature dishes

I have tried here a lot of times. But there's one dish which I keep coming back to.
Infact there are times when I have come here specifically for the dish & walked away only with that.

The Kane Tava fry.

You get 2 pieces. Its simply superb. Just cannot stop at one portion.

The rest of the dishes are good. No complaints there. But nothing beats their Kane Tava fry
Gautham Pai K
Major time waste. You can only find waiters hungry in this place as there are no people who come to grab food here. Cost is on a higher side which is not worthy at all.

A place I go to whenever I am in and around Infantry Road and Commercial Street. Not your regular flashy, well promoted restaurant. The decor is 90s, a family restaurant and not gloomy and dark bar as one might perceive by its name, but not hip-and-happening, colorful with outdoorsy set-up either.

Coming to food. Excellent seafood collection. Their crab sukka, special prawn curry and Unicorn Special Crab masala should be definitely tried if you are visiting for the first time. Order away some appam, egg appams, or kerala parotta to go with it. The portions are decent and filling. The staff is helpful and cordial and suitable minor adjustments are accepted to your order.

All in all, a good place to have a hearty meal on a Sunday afternoon. :)

Heaven for Sea food lovers!

I went to this place for lunch on a Sunday afternoon and by the end of it, I was so full that I didn't even want to get down the stairs.

We tried three different items from the menu:
Prawns Pakoda, Crab sukka & chicken Ghee roast(not sure about this one)
and each one was equally delicious.

Try this with either appam or neer dosa - tastes amazing.

Would love to visit again & try few more things!!

Known for their great seafood and coastal cuisine, they have been around for ages now but the food remains great. Not too spicy, good price range of very tasty sea food. This is defn a must visit for all the sea food lovers

Not worth. Too expensive. Worst food. Service is too slow. I won't rrecommend it. I would have given 0 rating if option would be there. Never come.
Arijit Chakraborty
Just had a quick lunch today afternoon. The unicorn special crab has to be mentioned. Simply out of the world. If u crab lover just try it out blindly . The most beautifully made and juicy crabs. Also the surmai rava fry and the chicken ghee roast needs a mention. The service was on time. All in all if u want some grt crab venture here for sure .

Unicorn has been around for ages it seems and yet so few reviews? In a city whose landscape changes with the season, Unicorn has been a constant. Yes, compared to restaurant these days who are complete with glitzy interiors and whacky names, Unicorn might not appeal to the ones looking for hip and cool. Yet it's food speaks volumes, especially its sea food. Their seer fish fry and crab will leave you craving for more and blind to the dingy interiors. So if ever in the CBD area, make a beeline for this old classic.
Gautham Machaiah
Unicorn seems to have been caught in a time warp. Nothing seems to have changed over the years, the ambiance, the decor, the electrical fittings, the furniture and even the security guard.

The ambiance is nothing to talk about, but food does not disappoint, though I would not give it a ten on ten. Unicorn specialises in coastal food and some of the must-order dishes include Unicorn special prawns, chicken sukka, chicken ghee roast and chilly crab. If you really want to enjoy your crab please forget your table manners. Unicorn is also known for its Mangalore style rasam which is served in a glass.

Please avoid appams. The appams we ordered we like thick dosas. Totally disappointing. The chicken curry too could have been better.

For the dessert I would recommend the low calories raagi (millet) halwa.

Food: 3.5/5
Ambiance: 3/5
Service: 3.5/5

This restaurant on infantry Road will remind you of the 90' type family restaurants in good old bangalore! There is nothing so great to tell about the ambience or lighting or service because the current restaurants in blr live on these parameters. But, the food here is beyond outstanding! It beats evening else. The best sea food available in bangalore I can say. Do not miss the unicorn special prawn masala and the crab curry. The fish fry pomphret and chicken ghee roast was cooked to perfection. Prawn rice was yummy too. Sadly the vegetarian portion of paneer and egg rice was not edible. Staff, plz take note and make it atleast bearable if not tasty. I wouldn't say it's pocket friendly. But good value for money. The great taste of the food makes us forget the fat bill.

Unicorn is one of the best seafood restaurants in Bangalore. The Neer Dose and Fish Curry are a must try. The prawns and clams are delicious too. The ambience is like an old school family restaurant, lighting could be a little better. But overall, it's a great place with amazing seafood at reasonable prices :)

I love this place for their authentic mangalore cuisine. Chilli crab, prawn sukka or ghee roast is just amazing. The only drawback is that they take forever to serve. However the wait is absolutely worthwhile.
Bhagyawathi Shet
Awesome joint for sea food lovers. Should not be missed once in Bangalore come what may. Service is very good . the ambiance is quite comfortable. In short it is value for money for a lover of sea-food.

The first place where I tried Chicken Ghee roast and became a fan. Mangalorean cuisine and fish dishes are good. Vegetarian dishes are also okay. Avoid everything else.
Sachin Sanjay
Being a mangalorean, this place is an absolute delight. It has a variety of typical mangalorean dish on offer and the other cuisine is not that bad after all. Ambience wise, a small but neat place. Good for a silent meal with family. Chicken 65 is one item that we order every single time.
Ashwin Prasad
Went here post all the reviews, but was very disappointed (all 4 of us) tried all the recommended seafood but it was bland and expensive. A definite no!!

We used to go to Unicorn pretty often, before we turned vegeterian. Haven't been there since then. We always had a great experience with food and service. The crabs, prawns, chicken, all the seafood masalas and curries have been consistently awesome.
The ambience is a little weird, could be improved, but the food is the superstar here
Praveen Kinnarkar
Have been a regular customer here. One of the best seafood restaurants in Bengaluru. Most of the dishes are prepared here with coconut which adds to the coastal flavours. Nothing beats the prawn masala and neer dosa combo. Must try. Price is reasonable. Service is fine. Pretty smooth ambience too.

Located in the central business district, on Infantry road (Bhagwan Mahaveer road) this restaurant is an old institution. The decor of the restaurant is bit old-school, but this is true of any great unforgettable place anywhere :-)

There will be retro bollywood music playing in the background which will make you go back into memory lane.

This place serves superb de-shelled crabs which go very well with 'neer dosa'. Also the 'jinga' or prawn dishes are worth killing for!

Have to visit again to try their other dishes sometime soon...My rating and review opinion is based on the seafood that I have had here. Not tried their fish yet.
Pooja Gangatkar
I have been a loyal customer to this restaurant. Been visiting this restaurant ever since i was 5year old as it was my daddy's favorite place for dinner. What you should try on your visit would be their unicorn special prawn's, chilly crab, fish curry with boiled rice and chicken hariyali.
Why you should try this restaurant would be simply for their food, a decent place with a pleasant ambience and reasonable pricing for the quality of food they have to offer.
Richie Sam Oommen
Well, start with a crab soup. Among the best available soups in bangalore. Not so thick, but ideal, real hot. A crab masala is what we had next, with four mid sized crabs inside - mangalore style semi gravy. The neer dosa is really good too! Foodies, Mark this place!!
Could not go here during the decade I was in Bangalore. Finally went there last Sunday..great crab soup with burnt garlic flavour and fresh crab pieces, average special prawns masala dry and below average kane masala fry..overall below average against expectations but i have hopes of finding something I like better here. Service was ok good.
Rohith Nandakumar
I do not understand why it is rated so highly. This is a very average place. We were looking out for good places to eat and decided on this one based on the ratings. But when we went there we were quite disappointed. The ambience was okay (the lighting is quite bad and gloomy). The service was okay but took a long time for the food to arrive. We ordered a few chicken and some vegetarian dishes - the taste was'nt all that great either. I know this place is known for its sea food and I don't know if its fair to rate based on the other cuisines, but it definitely was not worth the high price that we paid for.

Used to visit this place a lot in the mid 2000's and was pleasantly surprised on my most recent visit a month ago to find that the quality has not dropped a bit. This is probabaly the place to go to if you are a prawn and other coastal delicacies fan.

Fret not if you dont like fishy stuff they also serve the staples of North Indian curries and naans which are equally well made and tasty. The most appealing feature of this restaurant is that you still feel that old world charm where you can have your meal and beer in peace without anyone hovering over you in an effort to chase you out. Try the prawn curry and rice.

Cheers,
Anuj A
[Edited on 30 May 2015] - Food quality has declined drastically. I fear this may be the beginning of the end.

[Original Review] - Definitely in the top 3 when it comes to coastal food in the city. The prawns special and the chilly crab (de shelled) are enough to make you cry. Order some neer dosa to scoop the crab into your mouth and be prepared for a taste of heaven.

The prawn ghee roast also deserves special mention. Absolutely divine. If going in a group you can order the fish. Never been disappointed with the quality of fish.

Stellar, unobtrusive service and a slice of old bangalore thrown in for free.

Highly recommend.

awesome crab masala and butter chicken .. i swear being a delhiite i love its butter chicken .. Awesome menu on bar .. I love the wine they serve

This place deserves a 5 star rating just for the Unicorn Special Prawns Masala....its that good. Best prawns I've ever had in Bangalore. I would suggest to pair it with ghee rice or neer Sosa.
Niraj Ranjan Rout
Visited today and loved it.

We had the crabs sukka, seer fish tawa fry, neer dosa and appam, and everything was perfect. The service was very attentive and friendly. Would love to go back here.

We found it a bit expensive, given the decor is dated. Wasn't very busy at 4 pm in the afternoon on a Sunday, but I think if they can redo the decor and rebrand as an authentic seafood place, they can be very successful in Bangalore.
Sunileo
Old fashioned interiors and friendly servers. Manglore style seafood. Not ideal for vegetarians. Crab soup and crab chilly were the best dishes.
Raveena Vishwanath
If you are a lover of seafood and Mangalore style food, this is one place you must go to!
The neer dose and chicken masala are unbelievably good. Most of the starters are amazing too. Almost any fish item or chicken item is sure satisfy your taste buds. And unlike most seafood restaurants, there are a lot of options for vegetarians too.
The staff is courteous, the food is brilliant, I have gone here many times and would love to keep going.

Ended up here accidentally without knowing anything about this place. Had crab masala with boiled rice!! hats off to chef. It was a big surprise. I could not resist my temptation on the next day! came back and ordered the same thing,, and They delivered the exact taste. I visited this place a fifty times and ordered the same food and not even a single time I was disappointed!

I fell in love with this restaurant the very first time we visited it and 15 years on, I am still a fan of their food. However, those days we had no social media to write these things, and also we were busy eating, enjoying and spending quality time with people rather than with computers and smartphones.

Coming to the food, my all time favourties here have been their unique sweet corn chicken soup, Unicorn special prawns, prawns pakoda, butter chicken and naan. So far, I've not tasted prawns anywhere else, in the country and world where I have travelled, which could match this place. Words are not needed to describe the amazing food here as this place is one of the legends of sea food in Bangalore, the other best of the lot being Fishland in Majestic. Don't miss these if you are a seafood lover.

Food-4.5/5
Service-4.5/5
VFM-3.5/5
Ambience-4/5
Live To Eat
The seafood is to die for the unicorn special prawns is well cooked the slice fish is just perfect but not for the price .. 550 for a slice of fried fish it's a bit too much ..
Rest the crab masala with the neer dosa and the fish pulav like all other dishes are perfect ..
The prices are a high on the whole I know we have to pay for quality .. But I think it's on the high side .. Food is delicious no doubt .

5 is for the amazing prawn masala that you get at unicorn.

Mouth watering seafood here! Appam and fish curry and prawns chilly!
PS its time for them to change their cutlery.

Went here for lunch once as I had some work in the area. I have heard a lot about this place and is supposed to be a legend as it has been around since my uncle and dad were kids. Its reputation precedes itself. So on a hot afternoon after finishing my chore I was wondering what to do for lunch. Then it hit me - Every time I drive down this road I admire the Unicorn but have never stepped in. That had to change. So after a short walk and a quick climb up a flight of stairs I entered this treasure of a restaurant. I was dining alone so getting a table was no issue. There was some bar work being done so the occasional banging was quite disturbing. I wanted to have a quick lunch so I ordered for the Prawn Curry, white rice, Seer fish masala fry and of course, a pint of ice cold beer! The waiter was very helpful. He told me how the gravy will be. He suggested the rice. I wanted to have the appams so he said in that case go for Prawn Masala. But he said it was heavy on coconut. So i passed and stuck to the curry. Very helpful bloke the waiter was forgot his name. He suggested not to take the crab as they were still waiting for the fresh stock to arrive. Very few guys will be this honest. The curry was spicy with a lot of chunky prawn pieces. The seer fish was one fat chunk with evenly coated spice and fried to perfection. It just came off and bones were a minimum. The prawn curry is typically coastal but has no coconut and is quite heavy on tamarind. Goes heavenly with rice. The fish on side was a perfect complement. And yes, all the spice was being washed down real well by the beer! So overall, awesome food. Go there for the seafood. Don't bother trying anything else. This is a seafood specialty restaurant. The beer is ice cold so no complaints. Seating is fairly large. There were only 3 tables occupied when I was there - a Thursday afternoon. They play old Hindi songs in the background. The interiors are a bit drab and look past their prime. But if you give all that a miss, the food surely (which is the most important) will want you coming back for round 2. I know will be back there again... soon!

Coastal delight.

Simplicity personified. Humble ambience with that old town restaurant feel. But dont be misled. Order the kane masala fish with any prawn and be surprised. Rest all is decent. Great taste. A little expensive I must say but for that level of preparation I do not mond shelling a few extra hundreds.
Petesunil1977
Very good food......nice location.....easy to identify .......
Cheer....

Maybe we went there on a bad Fish day.....very disappointed with the crabs and prawns......

Being a punjabi from Patiala, I love my butter chicken and dal makhani. But the amazing food of Unicorn definitely has me sold !

I went there coz I had heard a lot about the place esp the unicorn special prawns. I ordered that along with appams and the crab sukkha. Also a plate of rava fried sear fish. The food was outstandingly good, the seafood extremely fresh and the staff very friendly and helpful.

The decor seems like its stuck in time but I guess thats what adds to the charm of the place. A little expensive esp for the ambience provided but the food sure does make up for it.

Overall, I would definitely go back for the food ! :)

Amazing sea food, fantastic service. the masala crab is to die for.

Was suggested to try this restaurant for authentic,Mangalorean sea-food and they did not disappoint.
Four of us had crab soup, unicorn special prawn, fried Kane, Kubbe sukhe (clam sukka), Crab chilly, unicron special fish curry with neer dosa and plain rice.
The crab soup (Rs.110) didn't have much crab, but the stock was absolutely delicious. They make a spicy version here.Personally,I prefer the creamy one.Priced at Rs.110.
The prawns (Rs.300) were concentrated in a lovely masala, spiced just enough with the right amount of tang.
The kane (fish from the family of elopidae, commonly known as ladyfish,Rs. 250) was fried to perfection. The meat was soft and delicate ,and yet so succulent.Very delectable!
Coming to the clams (Rs.200),by far my favourite of the starters.Extremely easy to eat, and cooked perfectly in the sukka masala. Great flavour and enormous quantity.
We asked for the crab chilly (Rs. 350) to be de-shelled and there were no qualms whatsoever. Every crab dish i order in Bangalore seems to taste like scrambled egg, and this was no different so cant really give a non-biased opinion on this one. The masala again was fabulous though.
The highlight of the evening was the unicorn special fish curry (Rs. 500). The fish served was Anjal aka seer or surmai. Made with cooconut, tamarind, chillies and vinegar, this curry is synonymous with Mangalorean cuisine. Coupled with neer dosa (water dosa, Rs.65 a piece) or simply plain rice (Rs.60), this combination can take you to heavenly bliss. Couldn't be more authentic!
Totally, our bill came to Rs. 2472. (Tax:Rs.400). Definitely worth it

4.5 for food. Great food, enjoyed the chilli prawn, boneless crab masala dish, fish fry.
3 for ambience. Ambience is OK, service was friendly and prompt.

But the food was outstanding. If you like sea food, I highly recommend Unicorn.
O Joseph!
Went over to unicorn to treat mom for Mother's Day, and these guys didn't disappoint. Had the Chilli prawns our all time favorite, made to perfection as usual. Kori Rotti, fish curry, neer dosa, egg appam, red boiled rice and fish really hit the spot. Proper mangalorean fare, and Bleddy delicious. Service was a little spotty as they charged us for 2 neer dosas instead of one. But mom was stoked, and I happy a camper. This place is my go to restaurant for whenever I'm missing mangalore. A definite recommendation.

This is an amazing restaurant for sea food lovers.....yuuuummmmmmmm......
I went with one of my friend and we wanted to have a working lunch so it was not very elaborate .... the waiting staff were great. We ordered a crab soup which was just out of the world smell of burnt garlic yummm my mouth already started watering even thinking about it. Then we ordered 2 tandoori rotis and a crab masala the crab meat was cooked to perfection the whole meal costed us Rs 650, This restaurant may look little old style estuarine but as they say dont judge the book by its cover
