Review Kappa Chakka Kandhari - Chennai (Madras)

One of my favorite eat outs in Nungambakkam. I tried their fixed menu this time and we really loved all the items in each menu. The portion sizes were small but you do get unlimited rice cakes and idiappam in entree so you never return empty stomach. Service was excellent, our attendant was also very knowledgeable about items in the menu

one of the authentic Kerala restaurant I went in the recent times. Every single dish was worth the penny. Best among those are Idiyappam and stew. also it went well with aloo mutter gravy. The best dish among the dessert is cloud pudding or elaneer pudding. Had a satisfied dinner after a long time..

One of the best restaurant to check out if you love Kerala cuisine. Their well curated combos are a delight. We'll mannered and efficient staff makes the dining experience great.

Best place to get Kerala cuisine in Chennai. Was recommended to try the Toddy Shop Memories set and it turns out great and more than I expected. Those small dishes are actually quite appetising and being a foreigner, the staff actually teaches me to how to dine and enjoy the food. Truly a remarkable experience.

The best authentic Kerala restaurant I've ever tasted so far. The service and the charisma was mind blowing. Absolutely enjoyed the delicious food. Adi poli Kerala restaurant.

A wonderful dinner on Xmas day with our family. Albin served us and explained the menu. We enjoyed the mutton coconut fry, meen polichettu and egg roast. The Vegetarian tasting menu Mamangam gave us a glimpse of the extensive choices and each dish was so flavourful. We enjoyed the Palada and cloud pudding for dessert. Overall a lovely evening and a scrumptious meal.

The best thali I have eaten in Chennai. Excellent fish and prawns. Even the desserts are super. Don't miss the chilli icecream and tender coconut pudding.

Kappa Chakka Kandhari located on Haddows Road in Chennai is for those keen about authentic Kerala cuisine. Select must try items are Chemmeen, Mutton stew, kappa, Nei Patthiri and Vazhapoo vada. Open from 12 noon to 3.30 pm for Lunch and 7pm to 10.30 pm for dinner on all days. Cost per person would work out to 700 - 800 Rs, if you choose to have starters, main course and a sweet dish / desert. Must try Kerala Cuisine

Had the Ammachhi set menu and fish with daily menu option. Was an interesting experience. The food is decent, especially for a Kerela meal in Chennai. If you miss the beef fry, prawn fry, mutton coconut curry or a nice meen curry, this is the place to visit. I had my meal with Appam and vattyappam

#Longpostalert Kappa Chakka Kandhari - The newest entrant to the Chennai food scene, recreates the nostalgic taste of Kerala in a 'neo'stalgic aura. The brightly lit huge space, situated right on the busy streets of Haddows Road in Nungambakkam offers you the hidden treasures of Kerala. If a Malabar Biriyani or a Kerala Meals or a fluffy Porotta is your only definition of Kerala cuisine, stay away! Out of the Box menu at KCK is skewed towards the traditional grandma delicacies, which is hard to find these days even in it's place of origin! The Food Story The 'Idierachi', a deep fry preparation of dried and crushed beef was spot on with right amount of spices. The famed couple from Sri Muruga Cafe, Thripunithura which went viral over past few years - 'Pazhampori Pothu Curry' was next in line. It was a no complaints-no compliments Pazhampori with the best in class Pothu Curry; Undoubtedly the best beef curry I had from Chennai. Go for it, if you are a beefeater. 'Vattayappam', the mildly sweet fermented rice cake was the star of the evening. The best Vattayappam I had in this 36 years of food journey. You can either eat by its own or can mix with the spicy 'Mutton Chaps'. The well mashed 'Kappa Vevichat' was perfect. Mix it with scrumptious 'Tharavu Mappas' and have it for an instant foodgasm! 'Pathiri' finds it's partner in 'Ramapuram Kozhi Curry' and both gelled well. 'Ramassery Idli' served with 'Idli Podi' and 'Sambhar' was liked by others in the table; am not much of an 'Idli'ng person. Ended with a orange flavoured 'Goli Soda', 'Guava Temptation' and 'Pazham Nanachat'. The sheer pleasure of opening the Goli Soda with the thump takes you back to your childhood, but at a price of ₹60.00 per bottle! Guava Temptation, Red Guava Juice with a spicy Kanthari in it is quite refreshing. Pazham Nanchat, dried banana mixed with jaggery and coconut is good. It was told that all the ingredients were brought right from Kerala and cooked here in small quantities/ batches by traditional home cooks. The taste of each and every gravies, be it chicken/ mutton/ beef/ duck, kind of certifies that. They even have a specialist cook just for the Ramassery Idli! The Aura The bright dining area overlooking the open kitchen is neatly stacked with different seating options - chairs, benches and high chairs. Even with so much of action happening right in front of you in the Open Kitchen, not even a trace of smoke or irritant air. Awesomely designed! The Service Quotient Booking over their FB page was prompt and the table was ready upon arrival. Keeping in mind that they are just 4 days old and still in their trials, the service was good. I am sure that few hiccups like delay in some of the orders and minor error in the bill will just be a one-off case during this infancy period. The attentive partners who finds time and energy to visit each and every table to explain their 'dream' and get the feedback is a not so common gesture. The availability of Valet Parking makes your life easy, in otherwise busy area. The Dent Most dishes priced under ₹200.00 in the menu gives you a pleasant surprise. But, be ready to get surprised again with the serving portion ;). Remember, one portion is for a one person. But then, it's insane to expect an economical affair from a proper fine-dine restaurant in such a prime locality. A total of ₹1.7k for the items mentioned in the post for 4 of us finds perfectly fine for the QUALITY they serve. The Greedy Me Would like to: 1) Eat that soft Pathiri with Tengapaal (Coconut Milk) 2) Eat that Koorka with traditional Pork preparations 3) Drink piping hot Strong Tea along with 4) Eat more of Malabar snacks apart from Unnakai and Koyikaal (Kolli Fry) 5) See clay pot tumbler/ copper tumbler on the table which gels well with the other serving utensils And 6) Drink that goli soda for half the price ;) Overall a very satisfying dinner for our family. Do taste it out for sure, if you have the craving for some traditional Kerala food. Keep up the set standards! Cheers!!

Kappa Chakka Kandhari-a name that would capture the attention of any mallu and food that would live upto the expectations. Aesthetically pleasing ambiance, authentic Malayalee dishes served with warmth by cordial staff. To top it all, an ice cream with Kandhari flavor; the showstopper!! A special thanks to Sathyan, the captain, for the menu recommendations!!

Onasadya (Onam feast) organized by Kappa Chakka Kandaari at Marathahalli grounds near Ezone and Marathahalli bridge was a great experience. 28 dishes, 4 payasams, all veg and all delicious. They've also got an Onachantha (Onam market) in the grounds where you can sample delicacies like "Shaap (Toddy shop) fish curry", Pork fry, liver fry, Unnakkai, Sukhiyan, Fish cutlets, etc. Packed fish cutlets, pork fry and liver fry for dinner. The packed items also tasted great. Happy Onam to all!

Me and my friend visited this osm place for the first time, which serves traditional kerala food. We went for dinner today and we were really exited by seeing the menu, but a bit confused to order what dish then came Mr.Albin to take orders and he suggested us few dishes prawns kizhi, siriyan beef fry, squid roast, kappa shap curry, pidi & kozhi curry, tender coconut pudding and kandhari ice cream. All these dishes were mindblowing we just loved all the dish suggested by Albin we thank him soomuch for the delicious food suggestion. We really loved the food the ambience and the service and we flet like we were in gods own country. We 100% suggest the food here to all and we love to come again.

We had breakfast at kck. All we did is sit, relax and eat.. no mess while serving.. everything was brought to you on plate.. lovely ambience and staffs were pleasing.. I loved the puttu and kadala curry.. lovely and authentic taste.

Price is the menu is not correct. There is huge variation with all the itEMS. Also food taste is overrated and It is high priced. Tender coconut pudding of better portion is priced at half the price in Coco island with better taste, it was packed in worst way that it cannot be tasted as pudding but like a milk shake. Kari மீன் polichathu taste was ok but priced at 595 vs 400+ in the menu here. Paaladai was good and served in nice package
Manju Muthu
The Best in town for Tender Coconut (Elaneer) Pudding and Kandhari Ice cream (Chilli flavoured, that's what I felt😅) .
Ambience and Service were simply superb.
Tender Coconut pudding was so damn yumm and it will make you have another one.
Those who don't like Spiceness in ice cream should think before having Kandhari ice cream.
Reasonable Price for the Quality of food they provide.

Brilliant food ! Ensure to make reservations before you visit the place ! We ordered appam, meen curry, karimeen fry , matta rice , beef cutlets (these was delish ) , chamandi tray (which ideally should come with ), and tender coconut pudding .. portions are very less and tad bid overpriced ! But the food tastes divine !! Must for anyone who is a Kerala cuisine lover !!!

Finally Visited this place after many recommendations. For starters, ordered for Syrian beef fry, clam roast and prawn kizhi. I found all the dishes to be very tasty but the quantity is extremely less. The quantity should justify the cost, which was missing. For main course, we ordered for a putty and varaal meen curry, thattum muttum, aappams, pathiris and beef curry. The fish curry was pathetically bad. The gravy lacked taste and flavors and the fish too had less salt. The thattum muttum was very good. The beef curry was extremely good. It was lips-smacking! For dessert ordered for the legendary elanir pudding. Oh it was heaven! So basically the 4 stars to this place is just because of the pudding! It had the perfect sweetness. It was just out of this world. I am gonna go there again and again just for this pudding!😊

Best place if you want to have good kerala food. Kudampulli fish curry, kappa , and everythin else they brought to the table was fresh and tasty

Wanted to give it a 4 star but increased it because of the waiter Vishnu who served us. We ordered
1) Sherbat drink
2) Passion fruit juice
3) Vattayappam
4) Appams
5) Beef Curry
6) Fish curry
7) Beef puttu briyani
8) Rameshwaram idly
9) Tender Coconut Pudding

1&2) Both the drinks were good. Felt the passion fruit was better.
3) Vattayappam had two pieces and was mildly sweet. My grandmother liked it.
4) The Appams were not the best. It became slightly colder and we had to tear them apart. Not sure if this is the usual but since we mentioned this during billing, our waiter was kind enough to waive this off. Hence the additional star. Nevertheless there Appams were tasty.
5) Beef Curry was really tasty. Loved it.
6) Fish curry- we were given the option of one portion or two. Each portion has one big piece of fish. We thought it would be small and hence ordered the double portion. It came in a huge vessel. We couldn't finish the gravy. It was tasty though.
7) The puttu was good as well. Probably could've been a little softer but I doubt it was possible since it was stuffed with beef and an egg as well inside.
8) the idlys were soft and the size of small Appams. Something different. Was served with sambhar and the podi. The idly was great with the podi.
9) THIS WAS THE FINAL ICING. WE ABSOLUTELY LOVED THE PUDDING.I CAN EAT THIS ALL DAY! We loved it and ordered 3. We wanted to try the payasam as well but it wasn't available. If you're going here you need to try this pudding.

Parking was valet as well. Space for around 8 cars to park. Maybe some more on the road.

Overall, slightly expensive, but tasty food. Increased the rating because of the gesture shown. Good place to try out!

Dishes ordered:
Prawn Kizhi
Fish fry
Mutton chops gravy
Fish moilee
Idiyappam
Appam
Puttu biriyani - chicken
Passion fruit icecream
Elaneer pudding

My favorite: puttu biriyani and mutton chops gravy!!

I had gone to this place with my family which included my elderly grandmother. She generally does not like to eat out, but she really loved the food here. All the dishes were filled with lot of flavours and tasted great. Even their service was excellent. The ambience is great with an aroma of coconut oil. The only con would be is that their portion sizes are pretty small. Also I had bought a pickle from them and took it home, but the taste was disappointing.

Overall, this is another place that is now added to my list of places that I would like to frequently visit for family dinners.

Yummy Food . Syrian erachi fry , kappa and erachi & passion fruit splendour were amazing.
Being a Kerala restaurant - they don't serve Kerala porotta which I feel is a drawback .

Unfortunately I didn’t have the time to get my mobile out to snap some pictures of the delicious experience at Kappa Challa Kandhari...

The experience overall was fantastic along with the service provided was top notch. We literally didn’t have to follow up on any of our orders or follow up requests. Onto the food, quite literally every dish we ordered was fantastic and deserved 5/5 ... Fish curry, Steamed rice, Syrian beef, kappa and fish curry, appam and mutton stew and then all the desserts to wrap it up.

A perfect place for any special occasion and the having the confidence that you will not be disappointed. A must visit place and now I’m planning for an excuse to revisit this place in the near future.

Having read raving reviews and celebrity endorsements, we were quite looking forward to our dinner here with our guests. We had reserved for our seats earlier. I must say, it was a disaster. While the food tasted good, the portions were too small. May be that’s how they’re priced and we were ok with that. However, the service was worst. They didn’t even bring water for almost 20 minutes into our meal. Our starter Ulli Vada never came, despite multiple reminders and towards the end, when we asked, he said he could swap the dish to something else as it was unavailable. The aapam, the puttu, the ramaserry idli, all came very cold and not hot at all. The tomato fry was bland, uncooked and was a bad choice. Half the vegetarian items on the menu were unavailable. The staff don’t care even if you remind them. Our lemonade came 20 minutes late. They don’t take feedback seriously. On top of this, they charge a 10% service charge for such pathetic service. Extremely disappointed and regret choosing this place for a special dinner. Looks like, they are just happy to ride on the brand they have built now. All in all, 1 star. Don’t recommend. Ruined our dinner.

Went there for lunch on 31st, the place was packed. Waited for some time to get the tabel. Chef have took care of us personally.

The food was fabulous, authentic home style. Soft shell crab, prawns, fish curry, cloud pudding top notches.

I've been to kck a few times now so I feel I can present a fair and unbiased opinion on the restaurant. Firstly if you go there on a weekend or a holiday then you should reserve a place or if they don't do that sometimes you go there early ,because this place gets crowded and deservedly so. As almost every dish I've had here has been one that tingles my taste buds, be it the mutton ,the chicken, the prawns or even the dessert for that matter. So the crowd is pretty decent here with more South Indians than others. The staff is is very courteous but they can be a inattentive on crowded days. Ambience is good enought too. Now moving on to the food , firstly starters we ordered the mutton chukka and the prawn kizhi the mutton was boneless and made with a great blend of spices which made it a sumptuous eat, the prawn looked good but was all too coconutty (which you may like if that's your sort of thing). Now for main course we had a prawn curry, chicken puttu biryani and appam. The prawn curry was average nothing too great, the appam was good enough and the chicken puttu biryani was tasty in parts but you need to have some curry along with it otherwise it's just bland. So main course as a whole was bang average. Now to my favourite dish at kck the tender coconut pudding, if I could eat one dessert for the rest of my life it would be this all day long nothing even comes close. It's a must order I usually eat 2 all by myself because it's that good. Oh I almost forgot they have beverages here too. So most of their beverages are with soda , the absolute kandhari and goli soda being the best of them. Alternatively you can have the non areated drinks too which are the passion fruit drink and lime and honey ones which are pretty decent as well.
This place is on the pricier side as far as the quantity of their dishes go. Overall it's a great place for quality Kerala type food so I would recommend it.

Love the food ... Tastes really good ... True mallu feel

The place was super crowded for a weekday lunch but the polite waiters got us the table within two minutes. Now for my review on the dishes.
Syrian iraichi fry- Soft, succulent pieces of meat done to perfection.
Puttu , Appam- They can’t afford to do injustice to it since it’s a staple dish.
Varuthu araicha chicken - Nice finger licking gravy
Karimeen polichathu- Tantalising.
Tender coconut pudding was top notch. The texture, taste and the way it melts in the mouth will keep you asking for more..
Must visit if you love Kerala food!!!!

Had Sunday Breakfast at Kappa Chakka Kandhari.
Food was Great. Was planning to try out their breakfast for a long time and it suddenly happened this sunday. Three of us got together for the breakfast.
Note: the place was jam packed despite being a sundays morning, which we totally didn't expect.
Please book your reservations early, we called up and booked on saturdays evening.
Timing is from 9.00am to 10.00am only.
I think walkin customer will find it hard to get a table, so book it early.
The food and service was Excellent. Despite of the crowd and chaotic situation, the staff managed it well.
It is unlimited food and a Sit in breakfast.
The food served are as follows
1) Warm Bread and Chicken Curry - The best out of the lot according to me.
2) Ramasery Idly and Beef curry - I don't eat beef, but my friend tried it out and said the curry was rich but the beef was chewy.
3) Dosa with Sambar and Podi - it was thick like kal dosa, Sambar was very subtle with perfectly cooked veggies and the podi was gritty, which i liked.
4) Aappam with chicken stew - the stew was rich but we liked the chicken curry more than the stew, since it was a little spicy that the stew.
5) Idiyappam and Egg roast - idiyappam was steaming and very soft, and the Egg roast masala was tangy.
6) Kappa and Fish curry - Kappa was well cooked and the fish curry was Okay, maybe being accustomed to typical tamil fish curry didn't find it exciting.
7) Puttu and kadala curry - warm puttu with well spiced kadala curry. It was simply awesome
8) Sulamani Tea was the perfect finishing touch to such a heavy breakfast, Hot and soothing.
Overall awesome food and an unique experience.

I visited this restaurant after reading the reviews
The plus points are
Outstanding food
Lively ambience
Main course portions were sufficient for 2 to 3 people
Starters portions were very little
All the dishes we had ordered were yummy

Minus points
One has to make a prior reservation whether it's a weekday or weekend
One cannot sit relax eat and take your own time .the service is pretty quick and they expect the customer to leave the premises immediately after eating
The stewards were prejudice and seems to gove preference only to Mallu people
They showed a discourteous attitude towards me and my friends since we were not mallu
The staff have to be well trained to be more polite
A pricey restaurant
Aswathyrudra
Omg its finger licking good..the kappa syrian beef fry even the rice and fish curry ..it tasted like my moms food.was long searching a good malayali restaurant and finally found this.the food is very tasty and hygenic. The karimeen pollichathu, vattayappam all had the authentic kerala flavor.Kindly add door delivery so that we can have your yum food whenever we feel like..

Christmas decorations were up and the place was so good. Except for the two prawn dishes that we had ordered, everything else was good. Friendly staffs, good and timely service. So the dishes we ordered were: Ayikoora fry, Mutton pepper roast, mutton coconut fry, chemballi fry, chena Dry fry were simply awesome. Prawn ularthiyathu and prawn kizhi were too bad. I would recommend weak stomached people not to taste these as they were not properly cooked. We also ordered passion fruit splendour and tender coconut pudding which amazing. I’d definitely recommend this place for you to try it with a bunch of friends or family or even for a nice date night 😊
Nithin Ullal
Kerala style food and it is awesome, its like home cooked food, mutton was tender, courteous staff, better reserve your table early.
Lakshmi Varadarajan
Went to the place going by the reviews. Pro's clean, quality products used
Cons: 1.offers no full fledged lunch- ended up ordering vattayappam and stew for lunch and vegetable biryani
2. No biryanis/fried rice/pulav/ chappati served and there is a twist to the biryani..it's actually a white puttu inside which some aloo/chicken masala is found here and there
Bottom line: if you are a nonveg eater it helps
Even then there are no main dishes, just appam, idiyappam, etc
For entrepreneurs, you can learn strategies from here as to how to mint money easily
Typical malabari styled hotel, it wouldn't satisfy the taste buds of southern Keralalites.
If you are looking for a traditional Kerala Sadhya, better look elsewhere.
Kaushik Shetgaonkar
Not value for money. Quantity is insanely less for such high price and average tasting food. Ambience is okay. Too congested. 10% service tax like seriously?
Natesoham1
It was really great experience over here, the food that ordered and serve are really delicious and great
All the items tried from fish curry fish fry mutton starters squid fry all are good. And best and ultimate thing we got here was coconut pudding. U don’t eat anything but atleast have this dessert. I think we will not get this item anywhere.
One thing I would like to add about quantity should increase so that we need to order double item and service charge can be removed because there is already GST
Mallika Devasahayam Peter
Lovely authentic Kerala food 😍 Kappa biriyani was amazing. Delicious passion fruit juice. Service was really good. Desserts were out of this world. Can't wait to try more food from here :)

A good place. But not for someone who like some classic Kerala parotta. They don’t have normal biryani rice or chapattis and etc. They have very specific cuisine as the name prescribes. Decent service. Good quality food. Had the prawn starters, appam and the neer fish gravy. Mutton stew was very nice. However, the quantity is very less especially in starter and gravy.
Tender coconut pudding was nice, but not mind blown!
Roopesh
We made the mistake of looking at the average rating and selected this for our dinner. The quantity is less than what you would feed to a child. We ordered banana fritters, a prawn starter and kingfish tawa fry ( medium size). I was shocked at the quantity! Was served on a plate the size of a saucer. It would have still been worthwhile if the taste would have been better. It didn’t have the authentic Kerala taste. Just frying everything in coconut oil and adding chillies and coconut pieces, doesn’t make it authentic kerala cuisine. Deeply disappointed.

Recently visited this place for lunch. We reached just in time as the restaurant closes at 3:30 before reopening for dinner. However, the staff was courteous enough to give us a table. Appreciate it! We ordered rice, sambhar, Syrian beef fry and fish curry. Food was fantastic and we polished off everything quickly. Portions are decent so we were quite full. Our server recommended that we must try their coconut pudding even though we told him how full we were :) and I must say, we didn't regret! Loved the pudding as it had the perfect level of sweet and squish to it. Hope to go back there with a bigger group so that we can try more varieties

Don't forget to reserve a table as it gets really crowded. We had ordered :
Nanari sherbath - 4/5
KCK chicken fry - 4/5
Karimeen fry - 5/5 Good texture, delicious outer coat
Appam, Puttu, Idiyappam - 6/5 All these three tasted great and doesn't make your stomach heavy
Varutharacha kozhi curry - 5/5 The chicken was too soft which just melts in your mouth. The gravy was spicy in a good way.
Tender coconut pudding - Omg!! It just wiggled the way it is supposed to and had the right amount of sweetness
Palada - 4/5

At the end of the meal, we were all satisfied and the best part was it didn't feel heavy. Though the service charge is a bit high, the food is worth the money. Definitely a must try :)

Authentic Kerala food place in Chennai. I loved the theming and names for the dishes too. Courteous and pleasant staff.

It's not often that the heart is full along with the tummy..I did eat to my heart's content and the food is delicious. Beef fry was perfect. Puttu was soft. Koorka is just the kind my mom would make. Sharjah shake was nostalgic, mutton chops was delicate and delectable and the showstopper was kanthari icecream. I mean who could think of this if not for the one and only Regi Mathew. I wasn't enough with all the food I horked down, that went ahead and bought two jars of pickles as well. Trust me, I'm one delighted customer who is going to be dreaming about your food until my next visit there.
Michael Rodney Fernando
Good ambience, decent rate, but very less quantity. A bowl of gravy/starter/steamed rice not sufficient for even a single person.

I took two of my frens for their 1st mallu food experience.... And they thanked me profusely for it. I loved the ambienc, cheery crowd and the courteous staff.
We started off with tapioca cutlet and banana flower cutlet. It was out of the world. Then we had the puttu and kadala staple. I also ordered beef curry and karimeen polichadhu. Puttu was followed by appam. For my vegetarian friend, I ordered coconut milk. It was dense and delicious. The more it costs the mouth and tongue, the tastier it became. We finished it with coconut pudding.
Would definitely visit again, as I had only scratched the surface 😍😍😎😎

I went to this place after all the hype my friends gave me on a Sunday Afternoon and I'm disappointed . We were handed the menu by a polite waiter and being a malayali the items listed were mouth watering . We placed our order and ordered some drinks too . The server got our drinks wrong and my father had to wait 30 mins to get his . Worst part , I could see the made drink kept on the counter and I had to point it out to the server that it was ours twice before he brought it to the table. The drinks were also not cold . The Starters were brought soon and the servers just kept them on the table and left. We had to cut the karimeen ( served on a small plate ) which in turn made the table messy and serve it ourselves . I dont want to sound entitled but when you take 10 % service charge the least I expect is to be served . And then came the whole Papadam debacle where I had to ask the waiters and servers 4 times for a papadam which took 15 mins to be brought despite me mentioning I needed one with my puttu . The food was decent and fresh . My problem was with the service and servers, again the waiter were polite and nice . At one point one of the servers dropped water on the adjacent table . If I'm being harsh with my feedback it's only cause I expected a lot from you guys . Hoping to be greeted with better service next time :)
p.s. It was on the first floor
