4. Vada
5. Plain Rava Dosa
6. Pongal
All items items are served hot with sumptuous accomplimemts Sambar and 2 types of Coconut chutney's.

One of the oldest restaurants. Heard the fake news that the Woodlands is closing and decided to come here one more time. Glad to hear that it is the fake news. As vrindavan was crowded, we had lunch at krishna. This place has authentic south indian food. The best option if you are visiting here is to choose the veg meals. The other options are not that great. Half our family had meals and were very satisfied. The other half chose north Indian food. The wait time for these was very long and the naan and the side dish was not that great. We chose punjabi paneer. A good choice if you are super hungry and are looking for a proper south Indian lunch

One of the iconic Udupi Hotels in the erstwhile Madras city . A restaurant , as we now call it , it's still maintained very well with no compromise on quality and service . It's been more than 70years since inception , and I've been a regular since my childhood . Furniture reminds us of the 60s and 70s . There are serving staff who have been here for decades , but still are courteous , quick and helpful . With the changing times , the menu card has gotten bigger with more items .
But Idli /Sambar , Masala Dosa , Mysore Bonda , Khichdi , are still the most sought after .

Worth the price ! Can be tried once in a while. Mysore Masala dosa was really good and you can try it out if you like spicy food ! Ambience was good 👍 esp the air condition (runs in 18) 🥶

This is one of the best restaurants for vegetarian meals.
We used to go regularly and the food quality was up to the mark as always.
But nowadays it has lost its charm and its taste has been below average. It would be great if they were back with the same taste.

Oh! Wow, what do I mention. An amazing food joint . I have been a customer for the past 32 years. Consistency in quality of food. Efficient service. Amazing consistency in that department too. What bothers me a bit is the consistency in decor too. That is monotony which needs avoidance. A constant regular upgrade of furniture and decor, leading to enhanced ambience would make the place attractive and a crowd puller to the generation that is after me.

Best South Indian breakfast! Crispy dosai, decadent pongal and poori! The list goes on! There is nothing more satisfying than ending the meal with a steaming hot filter coffee!

I believe this is one of the oldest hotel in chennai. If you want to taste karnataka style tiffin then you must try this place. Their mysore masala dosa(available from morning til night) was too tasty and after 3:00p.m you can get mangalore bonda which is so fluffy like a sponge. The food was satisfactory and if you are visiting near to Citi center/ Light house then you can try this place

Been to this restaurant many many times and look forward to going there many more times. We get typical South India vegetarian items always tastes good on the mouth, gentle on the stomach and easy on the wallet.
Food comes quickly and they staff expect you to eat quickly and vacate the table as they are in a hurry attend to the next set of customers. We were almost "pushed out" by the staff vacate the table and get of the restaurant.
Aravinda Bharathi
Top class tasty food, tailored to customer sensibilities and great customer service. Housed in traditional architectural building.
However, the table management can be better in the front desk area, especially during peak visit times. The noise and hurry-burry in waiting area diminishes the dining experience.

The menu at Krishna Restaurant is a celebration of diverse flavors, offering a rich tapestry of Indian cuisine. Whether you're a connoisseur of North Indian delicacies or a fan of the vibrant and aromatic dishes from the South, Krishna Restaurant caters to every palate with an extensive array of dishes.

Went at 8.30 am for breakfast on our way to mahabalipuram in Chennai. The place was awfully full and had MacDonald, cafe a coffe day, hdfc bank . We were lucky to get a seat outside . We ordered 2 plates of idly, 3 plates of pongal one Vada. 2 coffees , one uttapaam and one tea. The food was hot and tasty and there was no delay it came with in. 5 minutes .6for the crowd the service was out of the world and very good. The pongal had cashew nuts and overflowing with ghee . The utaappam soft and tasty. The bill came for 606.

Idli and vada tasted so amazing.. even coffee was nice... It's a bit expensive but worth it. Place is very well maintained and old look ambiance.

We went to Vrindavan restaurant. It was very good. The staff were very courteous and customer oriented. All items were tasty. Very good experience overall.
Balaji Subramaniyam
Nice and very decent Vegetarian place for a family get-together, especially if someone from abroad comes and meet all family members in one place within city and hassle free parking. One word of caution - on Marriage Muhurtham days this plan won't work.

We had Lunch in Tanjore Restaurant 😋
It was nostalgic for me since it was my favorite eatery in 1978 when a meal costed Rs 4.50 ; then 🤔
We enjoyed the delicious Sambhar ,rice ,koottu & Poriyal 😀
Crispy Appalam just crumbled & tasted nice .
Rasam was just enough spicy & very soothing to the throat at just the right temperature !
I would rate Thayir pachadi , the best that day ☝️
I have no words to describe the Paal Payasam ; so sweet & so much like Guruvayoor Temple special 😋

The go to place for good udipi style breakfast. Due to long domicile in chennai the udupi style cuisine is adapted to tamil palate to a great degree. The range of dishes is quite wide and reasonably priced. The sambar and two chutneys complement the dosas and idli vadas delectably. Filter coffee is their tour de force. A truly cherished experience.

Why list phone numbers for restaurant when cannot take phone orders for takeaway nor delivery

This was the first time I took out my girl to her childhood memory .. the filter coffee and the crisp ghee dosa was such a delight. The servers were super friendly and courteous. Food was joint hot and the chutneys .. I love them .. this is heritage food place .. when my wife took our kids for an evening snack .. they loved it as well .. idlis were fluffy and Puris were fried to perfection .. thank you so much for a lovely 30 mins at your place

I have been here so many times. This place is warm and cosy and has remained same and unchanged from past 15-20 years. Yes it's a old restaurant and i have been coming here from the time i was toddler.

The best dishes here are
1. Idli
2. Mysore masala dosa
3. South Indian meals
4. Chana bhatura
5. Basundi.

Don't try any other stuff here as they are just average.
These are the best and must have items.

Food is not spicy at all and is palatable for most of the people. Someone looking for spicy stay away as food is not all spicy and is on a sweeter side.

Overall ratings:-
1. Taste: 4/5
2. Ambience: 4/5
3. Quantity: 4/5
4. Hygiene: 3/5
5. Price: 4/5

Overall a good place, but certainly need to improve hygiene as the toilets are dirty and smelly and waiters many times dip their hands in the glasses and serve them us to drink otherwise a nice experience every time i go..
Sundar Nathan
Has the charm of old Madras. Food is fantastic here. Their pongal and sambar vadai are the best in town. One star less for their so so lunch. Yet, my favourite vegetarian restaurant in Chennai. Nothing comes close to this.

Every time i visit Chennai this is my place of stay and so usually end up having breakfast here . Always filled up this place serves good food and have great and prompt service.
they serve a giant Thali which i usually don't prefer much.
I would recommend this place for a breakfast option.
This place holds nothing special yet worthy.

Ratings based only on Taste..
Krishna Restaurant located in mylapore is a part of the woodlands hotel in Cathedral Road is quite a legendary place in chennai..Operational for decades it has a separate following in itself and i am one of them..Been my favorite since my childhood...

Restaurants looks mirror any restaurants from the 90's but have with good maintenance it looks quite good..The cooling from the A/C is perfect..But the environment as such is busy and chaotic thanks to the busy servers..

On my recent visit ordered their famous Masala Dosai priced at 110 including taxes..The Dosa is quite crispy served with an yummy potato masala..The Chutney and sambar served along were too good and overall it worked very well..
one of the best in chennai for sure..Also had a takeaway of meals recently which was quite good actually with everything being fresh and taste really good..

Must try restaurant for sure..

Consistency is a hall mark or Krishna. They keep their menu simple and deliver quality products to their customers.. its a tradition that one should try in Chennai

One of my favorite breakfast place in Chennai, use to stay just behind this restaurant for 4 years and whenever I have craving for good idly sambar this was the place. The prices are a bit steep but considering the location and quality it's worth it. Quick service and good food.

A vegetarian restaurant in the new woodlands hotel worth trying.
Came here for an evening coffee after shopping with my Amma and twin sister.
What I ordered :
1) Bhajji
2) Filter coffee
Three types of Bhajji were served - Potato, Onion and Raw banana (one each) with chutney and sambar as an accompaniment. They were really good. It was freshly made and hence hot when it was brought to us. Usually when I have Bhajji in any of the restaurants, I would notice excess oil on the plate and as I take a bite, the oil would land on my fingers......making the whole experience uncomfortable. In this restaurant, the oil was drained really well with none of it on the plate and my fingers. To add.......the bhajji batter tasted amazing!!
The filter coffee was nice. Since I’m a fan of strong coffee, I enjoyed drinking it. For those who do not enjoy strong coffee this is not the right choice. But at the end I felt a bitter taste after drinking it which made the experience a little uncomfortable.
A good place to enjoy a late evening tiffin and beverages.

Been here a week ago after visiting my brother who admitted in the hospital...went with my husband and brother's son....since it was on sunday evening the place was tightly packed and after great difficulty we parked the car....it was too crowded inside the restaurant and we waited for more than half an hour for our table...ambience is good and hygienic....coming to food we ordered idly, masala dosa and mysore masala dosa....all tasted good and homely...they provided me hot water after realising that I have got cold...thanks to the service person....service was commendable...
Price is nominal....on the ambient good place to visit with family and friends......

Orders:
Butter naan
Paneer butter masala
Gobi 65.

Butter naan and paneer butter masala was good. The quantity of the gravy was also decent. We got delivered gobi dry masala instead of gobi 65. Wasn't impressed by taste too. That was the only let down among the dishes we ordered.
Chennai Budget Foodie
Had to stay at New woodlands for a marriage, and had lunch there , we just had butter naan , paneet butter masala and gobi 65.

Gobi 65 reached us like a sabji rather than a starter, the naan and gravy was good.

A decent restaurant at this locality, good service and hospitality, very simple ambience, good and usual varieties of south Indian menu,, the food was served at the estimated time, but there taste was OK,, not so good, especially the chutneys and sambar was just average, there price is so high, not worth the money,, the quantity was also very less,,
Need to improve in all aspects,,
Car parking is not a issue,, can do better

This place exudes an old world charm. For the ambience, I found the place a tad costly. An unknown brand of bottled water is about 50 bucks. However the fact that it is crowded all the time speaks of the quality. All the dosa options here are very good. The South Indian lunch spread was so good. Absolutely love the vatta kuzhambu here. The lunch is rounded off with a sweet, ice cream and beeda. Would vote for this place any day for its taste, hygiene and slice of yesteryear Chennai.

If you're looking for a place that serves you quality south indian meals with relaxing ambience, then you are at the right place. From the delicious sambhar covered with aromatic ghee to different varieties of poriyal, it's a must visit place for meals that are sure not going to disappoint.

Great place to go to enjoy south indian styled food and sapad (thali).
Go for the thali which comes with a variety of dishes a sweet and pan in the end .
Also the other items like rava onion dosa was good too.
Also try the gobi manchurian dry which was yumm and flavour was good.

The puri with aloo sabzi was good and quite filling.

The other items in the menu looked good too .

Long standing restaurant in Chennai

This restaurant in New Woodlands Hotel is one of the long standing restaurants in Chennai. It is a pure veg udupi style restaurant famous for breakfast and meals. This restaurant is always full at whatever day of the week as it has regulars.

Recently I have visited this place for breakfast and food was great. Idly was soft and big. Dosa was crisp and a big one too. Sambar was top notch. The downside is the pricing is too high. A plate of idly is around 90 rupees which is costly. Service is quick.

Ambiance wise the restaurant looks old and can be renovated.
Balaji Venkatachalam
An old timer. A legendary, South Indian restaurant serving authentic delicacies.
People say that quality has dwindled with time. I would rather say, they stick to good old practices of culinary techniques and and have not changed with times to cope with stiff competition. In fact, that’s their plus.
Always suitable for a quick breakfast after a morning jog. Ample parking and the pleasant ambience make friendly as well as family dining suitable.
Idli, kitchadi, vadai, dosa, poori, Pongal and last but not least, filter coffee. Kitchadi is one of its kind here and must try.
Friendly and quick service.
A haven for Vegetarians!
If you've turned Vegetarian from an ardent meat rater, then you should definitely make this place a regular. I've been to this place more than 10 times I think and so far I've pretty much liked what I ordered.
My personal favourite is the - Vegetable Biryani and Paneer Butter Masala and the Naan or the Butter Roti is also equally incredible.
The service is top notch though some waiters expect a hefty tip in return (not in every case but some).

Overall I love the ambience though it can get a bit chilly due to the AC.

Came here for lunch on a Sunday... Good south Indian meals at reasonable rate... But had to wait for 15 min to get a table... Ambience is crowded.,.
Krishna Restaurant in New Woodlands Hotel is one of the few places in Chennai which still retains the old-world charm, reminds you of the nice feeling of having visited it with parents as a kid. Some of the other similar places which bring back pleasant memories are Hotel Palmgrove, Hotel Maris, Hotel Ashoka, to name a few! I’ve been here a few times and it has been pretty much the same always, good food and service.

Krishna Restaurant is Veg Restaurant located inside New Woodlands hotel. I had went for Sunday night dinner.

Reached the restaurant at 8.30 and it was completely occupied. Had to wait 10 min to get a table.

To start with ordered Sambar Vada and Curd Vada. The curd Vada did not taste good. I felt it was merely Vada with curd. People who have been regulars to Saravana Bhavan will understand this.

Next item was Onion Rava Dosa & Butter Dosa. My parents felt Bullter Dosa was good and it was like home made.

To finish ordered , grape juice , lime juice and filter coffee . After having coffee, it was more of decoction and less of milk which made the coffee taste quite bitter.

For 7 member , the total bill was Rs 1650/-

To conclude, people who like Vegetarian fare can visit this place. On weekends the place tends to me more crowded. In terms of food quality , this place just pass off as average fare.

On a parallel note New Woodlands has another Veg restaurant called Vrindavan. The difference between these two restaurants is that Vrindavan has more North Indian and Continental dishes.
Charandeep Singh
Decent south Indian food with really tasty sambhar and coconut chutney. Medu Vada dipped in sambhar is highly recommended. But restaurant can do with little more cleanliness.

New Woodlands Hotel's Krishna Restaurant is still a front runner for good South Indian meal. Must try of course is - their idli, vada combination and their dosas. I loved their Mysore masala dosa - it had a spicy, tangy chutney inside and was superb. I also liked their rava dosai, podi dosai and parotta kurma. While it is a good place for South Indian dishes, I was pleasantly surprised when the Chinese noodles, ordered by my young niece, was fought over by other family members. The chinese noodles had a very Indo-Chinese taste and was actually a good main course. However, it is wise to stay clear of North Indian dishes here. There were all quite average.

Good price and good service if you are lucky. When it is crowded, which is almost always, it will be a blessing if a waiter remembers any additional order you make. So it is better to give the order properly in the beginning itself. And don't forget to complete the meal with a tumbler of hot, filter coffee. Yumm.

A visit here these days is only for old times sake and for the friendly , enthusiastic and cheerful staff. And the coffee.
The food quality is not the same anymore, even though the regulars may swear by it. Good memories bring us back.

This is old buzzing restro which specializes in south Indian cuisine loved by Chennai folks. Good seating, crowded (waiting time) and has set menu. The staff in this resturant is polite and helpful. Place is clean and food is fresh. I find it bit over priced. However the food is good. The main thing is south Indian thali which has most items unlimited. So people with palate for the south cuisine will enjoy it more than others. Do keep in mind timing for snacks amd meals hrs are fixed and It has ample of parking.

Love this place! It is definitely over crowded during weekends but their service is prompt and the staff is very polite. I love their meals they are luscious. It starts with the soup and ends with the sweet pan and ice cream. Every dish served on the plate has its own authentic flavour. The rasam is my personal favourite and always tops the list in every meal I eat :) definitely going back for my Sunday meals! 😊

This place is amazing from the point of view that they have maintained their quality standard over so many decades. I've been there as a kid with my family, infact my parents' wedding reception was at woodlands. Went there recently after 15 years since my friend kept talking about the Mysore Masala dosa there. (She's a regular at woodlands with her family). Dropping in on a Sunday evening with my dad. We had a mysore masala dosa, poori, idli and coffee. We usually don't eat that much but the food was amazing! They have their own signature taste which makes the food here stand apart from the typical sangeethas, vasantha bhavans, HSBs and A2Bs. Pricing is very decent for the quality and taste of the food.
Aravind Nayak
One of the best south Indian udupi style vegetarian restaurant in Chennai. The dishes are quite authentic and tasty. The place gets pretty crowded and might have some waiting time.

It been nearly 4 months since I reviewed and had food outside. So had an outing to an very well known place In Chennai and a very grand old place named as krishna restaurant at the New woodlands for dinner. The place was jam-packed but the rotation and seat filling is very quick within 7 minutes we had got a table. The menu is very typical of any south Indian restaurant with tiffin some north Indian ,Chinese, fruit salad etc. Since being in Chennai I hadn't have tatsed the typical set menu and gosh it was way above the pay grade. Amazingly hot,Delicious, authentic, and 3 times refilling worthy. For an appetite like mine I had that rasam like an BBQ buffet along with the raita and porial. The best part apart from the food was the service. I bieleve this is the only place in Chennai were u would get not 1 not 2 but every serving fresh and hot yes hot. No places be it LEELA,ITC grand ,HYATT,WESTIN give second serving hot and maintain that temperature. It's amazing to see that consistency. The restaurant ambience is well maintained and very well polished. The cost is very nominal and worth every money I spend.
The best set meal authentic south Indian meal and way way better than the hotel names provided.
Can go anytime and relish

As usual.. Went to this restaurant with my BOSS..
I ordered Rava Idly... Its delicious 😋 but they gave only one idly... 😒 unexpected...
Coffee is good...
Prices are high...
Maybe one can try it for once..

Off course authentic South Indian food with a vintage ambience. People who like to have a proper South Indian meal will love this place. Best part is they even have ice cream and sweet pan at the end as a part of the meal .
Awesome experience must visits resto in Mylapore-Triplicane

Good, authentic udupi style vegetarian meals. The dishes are something to relish. One combination that I have discovered here is the thayir sadam with puli inji. Try it sometime. The place is always crowded, irrespective of the time, but the service always remains spotless.
Sundaram Ps
This is the best place for South Indian thalis. The rasam can bring you back here again and again. Great service adds to the experience. Weekends tend to be crowded and one needs to wait. The service and quality have remained of a high quality over the years. Highly recommended to go with family.

A little bit of Karnataka in Chennai 😊 wholesome good fresh food..not to be missed... alu paratha available in the morning .. ghee mini Idlis...chola batura... And hazaar other stuff.... And of course the filter coffee and the meals... great service and value for monies

Visited this place after getting so much hype! I had podi dosa and kothu parotta. The podi dosa was good and coming to kothu parotto.. I don't know whether they call it Indian or Chinese or indo- Chinese. It was nothing like the normal kothu parotta. The taste was very bad . You can actually call it as parotta pieces with finely chopped raw vegetables.

One of oldest and traditional food joint in Chennai... They are popular for their breakfast and south Indian meals.... I usually go to this place at least once a week for breakfast or lunch or dinner....

My lil one likes to keep it simple and always order poori and subji.... It comes nicely puffed up and served hot with masala and chutney....

My wife and I try to experiment a little... I think we have ordered everything available in their menu for breakfast.... Rava masala dosa and ghee roast is our all time favorite... If you don't mind having spicy food then you should order their Mysore masala dosa or plain Mysore dosa... It's full of flavors and a tad spicy...

Their meals is awesome... The service is good... They tag one waiter per table and the waiter ensures to be around until you ask for bill... They always are kind to allow my kid to share the meals... She enjoys the dhal chawal and appalam...

Authentic kannadiga desserts are very good... However I have never had an excellent dessert in this place... May be that's why they are not getting 5/5 in this review... If they add some nice dessert options it would be a complete restaurant...

It's gets crowded here on all days... So be ready for some waiting time...

1. Masala Papad – INR 42.38/-

Average. That’s it. The onion, capsicum & tomato diced vegetables that were sprinkled on the papad was lot spicier than it should be

2. Butter Naan – INR 59.33/-

After a long time having this usual templatey item. Nostalgic indeed. The butter naan connected with us ever since we learned New Delhi is the capital of India 😜😜. Along with Panner Butter Masala they made us to have it irrespective of the time of the day.

3. Paneer Kofta – INR 177.97/-

The costliest in the order. Expected more as this is the paneer that I have been longing for almost a week now, but it ended up being just ok. The choice of the dish was my brother’s, as he had come for the weekend from trichy. Unable to compete, had to eat this with Naan, Roti and Pulao 😭. Even your wildest enemy should not be punished like this.

4. Veg Pulao – INR 152.55/-

I see you have already started talking about the existence of Veg Pulao and Biryani. It’s all fate. I m a vegetarian. Ordering Biryani was too mainstream and hence we went for this. It tasted great. The dish was the SJ Suryah of Spyder. All the vegetables nicely diced, cashew perfectly roasted, rice particles spearated one by one 😍❤️ this was the show stealer. Must try here 😊

For other hotels PM me :)

Been going to this place for as long as 20 years or so.. one of the best for South Indian food. Excellent dosas, meals and rotis and gravies as well. Chinese not very impressive but it is a South Indian restaurant. And that’s really good here and consistent. Great service also.. it’s almost virtually full always.

I didn't plan on having lunch here today, but thought I'll give it a shot. With a pretty good appetite I walked inside Krishna restaurant. I was a solo diner so it took only a few minutes to get a table, but I was surprised to find the place fully occupied at 2 PM on a weekday afternoon!
Without much hesitation, I went for their thali. It came with two poori, one brinjal curry, a sweet, Dal, sambar, kootu, vetha kozhambu, rasam, curd pachadi, curd, mor kozhambu, ice cream and Beeda. Unlimited rice with a LOT of ghee!
Most of the items were pretty good, no complaints. But I specifically loved their mor kozhambu and their vetha kozhambu.
Bill for meals with taxes - 230.
Overall, I'm satisfied!

An all time favorite destination for a quick South Indian lunch. Food is very consistent. The service when compared to earlier days hs improved. At any point of time its crowded but the waiting time is very less. Seating capacity is good.

Krishna restaurant is situated inside New Woodlands hotel in Mylapore. They have been maintaining their standard and quality for a long time. I landed in Chennai on this day, was hungry as hell and headed here for lunch. They were kind enought to give hot Jeera water, and follow it up with what tasted like home made South Indian meal (rice, and curries). It was divine. Staff were excellent are polite. And what more, they have ample parking.

Food : i had south indain thali which included
Brinjal curry , vegatable coconut curry , dal, aloo curry , sambhar , rasam , curd , onion pachadi , puran poli and poori . Every thing tasted really good and at the end they gave us ice cream and beeda that is the pan . It was good experience .

Service: it was really fast , this place always packed with people and they are really good at service .

Ambience : it was good .

Yesterday I went to this place with my family. The ambiance was nice and the staff was also well behaved. We ordered for one Thali,Poori potato, Masala Dosa and Rava Masala Dosa. Both the dosas were below average and poori was also okay. Only the Thali was good. Our overall experience in this place was disappointing.
Food is not a cause of complaint at this restaurant. Standard Udupi style vegetarian food is always reliably fresh and delectable. However, one has to take issue with the prices being increased at every small pretext of tax related changes. With the GST rate standardization, the restaurant has gone ahead and increased prices another 10%.

Guys, 1 idli (just one) and one very very small medu vada costing Rs 110 is definitely not value for money at its shining glory. At this rate, this restaurant that boasts really no star ambience or facilities is fast reaching a star hotel price range. I find this more and more unacceptable. As much as I love this restauarant for its food (like I said, no complaints there), it is becoming gradually a diminishing value of returns for me personally.
Service is very good at this restaurant as long as you don't have to wait. Once you have to wait to be seated, the subsequent service time does get impacted.

A single review that talks about what I think is not a justified increase in prices under a tax pretext is perhaps not going to make a huge difference but is something everyone should be aware of.

Regards

Started my day with breakfast Pongal and Meedu vadai. This place is one my favourites in city. I would recommend this restaurant. Though it's quite expensive, food quality and service deserves it.

New woodlands is one of the best restaurants for south indian veg food.Food is nice both taste and cost wise.I like their breakfast options the most.
Staff are not very courteous and always wait for tips.If u dng tip them well they turn lil grumpy.Other than that it's a good place for breakfast and lunch

This place is 3rd in 65 best eats in Chennai. I went alone here to have my breakfast. They were very welcoming.
The food is genuine.
Service, Parking: 5/5

Absolute must visit for their tiffin options. My personal favourite is onion rava dosai, Mysore masala dosai. I would recommend this place for South Indian tiffin items.

This is a place thats worthy more than Saravana Bhavan. It's good for the price you pay. Parking is never an issue and the hotel is also good. Perfect spot in R.K.Salai and you can never miss out. The food served here is good and filling. The menu is limited but everything they serve is really good. We had their thali and dahi vada and roti with paneer sabzi (forgotten the name). The thali is good and fulfilling and this time we got puranboli which was amazing and soft with the perfect sweetness. Even their roti was soft and the paneer sabzi was good too. We go back most of the times. The server's are all courteous and do an amazing job!

Chapathi - it was as crispy as a papad or chips
Basunthi - it was the life safer
Grape juice - It was way tooo sour
I regret getting a treat from here wasting 1000 + bucks of my fil
Overall experience - worstuuuuuu

Hotel with a heritage.Vantage location and lots of parking space. It was busy when I visited.Good service and standard vegetarian menu.Don't expect a menu surprise.Just dosa, masaladosa,Aalu,Gobi,Paneer,Roti fare.
But what ever they provide is tasty and maintain quality.Slightly expensive, but when compared to Saravanabhavan good value for money due to ambience, quality & volume.
Overall very good experience and I will return.

This restaurant is one among 3 restaurants in New Woodlands hotel. It is easy to locate. It is a landmark by itself. This place is next to Savera / Music academy. Near the bridge ending point when heading towards beach. Have ample space to park the vehicles.

Ambiance is simple and decent. Service is decent. Ordered Veg Meals. It consists of Poori 2 pieces, poriyal, sambar, rasam, dal, kootu, raitha, sweet, pappad, curd and ice cream. Taste in general are good. Sambar with ghee tasted good among all.

Price is reasonable. Worth visiting. Value for money.

Note - You will get better ambiance, more option with slightly higher price at Vrindavan restaurant which is in the same premises. Service charge will be charged @ 4% as against 1% over here. We are informed that South Indian Meals for both restaurant are from same kitchen.

We stopped by for breakfast in a large group at this rather popular restaurant and must say that we were not disappointed at all. As expected, the food was superb, the service gracious and light on the wallet too. Seemed to have lots of regulars which is always a sign of a good restaurant. The ghee masala dosa was sinfully good!

Went for lunch
The menu was different as the food item pricing was like 36.54 rs ,56.76 rs rare this days
Anyways wanted to have Tiffin items. But they served only meals during lunch
Then eventually no other go ordered meals
Unlimited meals . as usual rice sambhar rasam kottu poriyal applam . Everything was good. The restaurant was vintage from the waiters to the interior. Same vanilla ice cream is served .
Everything from the meals to the service is similar to likes of Maris,Palmgrove
Flat 200 rs was the bill after adding up the tax

Went with family for dinner and the prices at this restaurant at New Woodlands were shocking as quality food was given for a decent amount. Tried Roti with Paneer Butter Masala and Kashmiri Pulav and both were excellent. Be it North Indian or South Indian, the food is fantastic. The ambience is also good here. You can definitely pay a visit for any meal of the day: Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner.

Very good food, decent ambience, decent prices, good variety, very well located. The idlis here are amazing, although this restaurant has specific timings for some items on the menu, but a great place for lunch.
Veeraraghavan Thirumalai
We went there for Diwali lunch. South Indian Thali was as amazing as expected. The place was very crowded but the service being extremely seemless. The repeat requests for side dishes were met with amazing efficiency. With Sweet Boli, Payasam & ice cream for dessert round off this was a real value for money meal @₹200 per head.

I don't think anybody would read reviews for this place because if you're staying in this hotel, you'll be prompted to eat here itself. We were 4 people for lunch, but two of us didn't have the appetite to eat full meals so asked if they had mini meals and they didn't have. Obviously sharing is not allowed. So we got two full meals and a ghee rice. Meals was ok. Ghee rice was not that great. Average restaurant. Can help your hunger.

This is a type of restaurant where you get south Indian touch in anything they serve . Parking space is good. Good ambience. Quick service. Decent food, being a vegetarian I definitely wouldn't call it one of the best place to be. The menu is limited and they dont provide a lot of choices. Overall a decent experience.
The value for money : 3/5

Being a Non-Veg guy, I usually don't go to veg restaurants. I went here for lunch with a senior friend/colleague who is a vegetarian. We had the meals, though I wasn't amazed with the food, I must say it was quite good. Decent place.

Went here , for breakfast and ordered ghee dosa , Sambar idli vadai and Pongal .sambar idli and Pongal were good but half size of the dosa was burnt a bit .. Which spoiled the taste.
Food 3/5
Service 4/5
Vfm -2/5

A typical South Indian restaurant, but love the service, it's jam-packed on holidays and weekends and you have to wait to be seated. But the menu isnt just limited to the standard Idlis & dosas. You get North Indian & limited continental options too. Cozy for family dining.

An absolute pleasure to eat in this place. We've been dining at this place for more than 15 years now. A fabulous thing about Woodlands is the consistency. Their meals are simply delicious. The rasam especially deserves a special mention. The dosa, idly, vada are out of this world. A must go place for all south indian food lovers.
Cooltan
awesome place for south indian meals. simple, home made and delicious. always crowded. i always go here when i crave for south indian cuisine. don't miss it.
Tapas
Great place fir lunch with a limited variety of food items. Great for a nice south indian meal. though the service might be just average the food is still quite good.

We ordered idli and vada. The taste of idli is the bestis the best i have had in chennai. Better than murugan idli, sangeetha and saravana bhavan. The idli is large, firm but soft. I could feel the layers of rice when i tasted it. The coconut chutney has the right content of coconut, salt and chilli bringing out the perfect flavors. Sambar is excellent

To top it all, the waiter asked us always if we needed extra sambar or chutney! 😀

Visiting in Chennai is a delight, but visiting New Woodlands while in Chennai is heavenly bliss! Everytime I make it to the Southern part of the Indian continent I am always prioritising a visit to Krishna Restaurant. I have to say, after 15 years of visiting this establishment nothing has changed since then. Same ambience, same waiters and same quality of food....to sum up in one word, GREAT!

My usual order: 1 plate sambhar vada, 1 plate yoghurt vada, 1 paper dosa and 1 chocolate milkshake. I ordered the same once again the the taste was stunning. My wife ordered the fried rice which she reckons is one of the best in the world! My parents ordered upma and bonda which were equally tasty.

I highly recommend this place to anyone visiting Chennai and looking for an authentic south indian delight. Spot the waiter with a handlebar moustache and you will get the full Chennai experience...it's a sight to behold!

It's a sin to be South Indian restaurant in chennai and yet serve below average idli, vada and filter kaapi. The popularity of this place is legendary.Sadly, all that remains is the name. When we reached, at 8 am, the place was already running full and we had to wait for 5-7 mins to get a table. We were a group of 6 - and we ended up ordering quite a bit off the menu. Let's take it 1 at a time. The idli was grainy and hard and yes, warm, not hot! Come on, it's 8 am on a Sunday morning, buck up! The vada was not at all crispy, tasted bland and was again on the cold side. My younger sister couldn't figure if it was sambar or rasam for accompaniment - it was that watery! Moving on to the pongal - low on the ghee and again quite bland. Could have definitely done with more pepper corns! The dosas however were a saving grace - the ghee masal was true to its name, so was the rava onion and rava plain. I ordered a ghee podi masal dosa - off the menu, but the server was kind enough to oblige. That dosa was the best of the lot! The kaapi was off balance - I like a strong cup of filter kaapi, love the bitterness to it, but somehow, this bitterness left us with a not so great after taste. Sheesh!
We closed our meal with some rava kesari - it wasn't over the top sweet and tasted really good, but that too was served cold! Sometimes it's good to get back to the drawing board - get the basics right.
The service does need a special mention - all the servers are polite, courteous and quick! Great job on that.
As for the ambience, it's nothing fancy. You will see a lot of family crowd, typical Sunday morning bfast scenes.
Don't know if I will get back again - but as they say, never say never!

Had a quite okayish dinner here. A place to go if you're into bland foods without much spice.

The hotel is located next to Savera. You can also find Vrindhavan and Ice Cream Works next to this place.

The Cream of Mushroom soup was thick and had a lot of mushroom pieces. There aren't much complaints about the soup since most of the dishes here are fast moving and are constantly prepared fresh.

The Ghee Roast was extremely delicious but was the wrong end when it came to the size. The poori, though famous here wasn't up to the mark since the side dish is a signature example of the hotel's spice reduced food.

Gulab Jamun was hot but was too sweet for my taste.

Overall, the restaurant is a place where you can go for a quick bite at a moderate price without the food affecting your stomach.

Taste wise, i would probably give this place a 4 but lighter points because of the heavier prices. All dosas here are well cooked. I have tried the onion dosa and the onion rawa dosa. Not a place for people on a tight budget.

Visited Chennai on official trip and visited this place for quick lunch. Ordered veg aputh indian thali. Value for money and very authentic taste. Covers almost entire range of south indian dishes alongwith sweet dish and ice cream. Was left craving for more.... Personal favourite is rasam, kolambu and poriyal. Plus all this at price of ₹165 only and worth it.

I used to be a regular here, we would stay in Hotel Savera next door, and have the thali here.
It is recommended to have the Lunch Thali here. It is bustling with server trying to server all the customers, who have occupied the restaurant at it's full capacity. Its like a small market here, only everyone has already paid for their food.

The ambience is different, it isn't relaxing, it's hectic. One is served food as fast as the server can. There are multiple dishes they serve, along with puri, and rice. Everything is limitless, except the sweet dish.

The place hasn't changed much, before we had to request for spoons, and get a weird look from the waiter, now the thali comes with spoons!

Overall great experience, I would highly recommend to come here for lunch, and try the thali.
Come On,dont Be Shy
Friends party and he choose to please us with authentic food in this part of Chennai.
Service, waiting time, food and interior decoration are all OK.
Had South Indian thali which is good ,but nothing great which forces you to visit next time.
Recommended.

Beware! they frequently commit bill fraud. Here's what happened to my friend:

Place: Krishna restaurant, New Woodlands, Chennai.
Date: 10th April 2016
Event 1: At 7:15 AM, along with my family had coffee & milk etc at this restaurant. When I checked the bill instead of two coffee. It only had 1 coffee(40) and 1 oothapam(RS 80). But, it should be 2 coffees and no oothapam. Upon questioning this, they accepted the mistake and said, just give the bill reducing extra RS 40. I remember in earlier instances too. A couple of times they gave me wrong bills.

Event 2: Again, we had our break fast at the same place. This time, along with the food. We ordered Bisleri water(I found the ordinary water they provide is not so good). But, I asked the server whether it is billed at MRP rate RS 20. He said no, RS 40(36+tax). Then, I got the bill only RS 40 for the water. I protested stating, I will not pay anything not MRP. The manager said, he cannot and go where ever you want(I also told him, that I will put this in social media). I have captured these events as a video for proof and also shouted at them. The cashier told me only manager can do something. I tried to gain support of public. A couple of them supported me. I told the cashier then, how come you have billed for ootham today morning. When I did not order for it. and then how did you accept RS 40 less. Suddenly, he paid back me the extra 40 RS. I appreciated the man who supported my stand and left the place.
Kettal kidaikkum... Not sure how much of black money this restaurant would have earned by this method.

Thanks
Venkat

Krishna Restaurant at New Woodlands Is one of the oldest restaurants known for its quality tiffen (in South Indian parlance) and lunch thalis.Popular for its breakfast and a personal favourite of mine especially for evening snacks. The restaurant is clean with polite waiters with long years of service, typical of traditional Udupi restaurants in Chennai.Idli,Dosa and Pongal is top notch especially the sambar and chutneys are out of the world.Ideally wrap it up with a hot filter coffee. For a change during me recent visit,I had the veg cutlet which was perfect,Parotta and Kurma ,with a bit of excessive masala flavour was decent and I washed it down with a nice fizzy grape juice. If you are around Radhakrishan salai, you shouldn't miss this!

This is my restaurant of preference in this landmark hotel. It is a traditionally styled space with attractive paintings. This place is better maintained and doesn't look too old or worn out. Service is pretty decent and well mannered. Waiting time here has never been too much and it's a great place for a quick meal.

The menu is pretty straightforward and I love their tiffen items over the lunch main course. Their Poori Masala, Oothappam, Pongal and Coffee is my preferred set of orders. North Indian breads and gravies are pretty standard too. Even taste wise I find this restaurant to have an edge. No dishes here are out of the ordinary or wow, but what they serve is pretty standard and just about alright. Pricing isn't exactly nominal, quite reasonable and VFM. A great place for breakfasts!

This restaurant is a part of a hotel which is quite a landmark in the city and the establishment dates back a few decades for sure. I've passed by The New Woodland's hotel uncountable number of times but somehow never happened to stop by for trying their food. Thanks to an impromptu plan with lesser number of people involved, we landed up here for lunch one sunny afternoon. I remember to have heard some positive words about this place but my experience went along a different line altogether.

Location - right after you get down from the flyover if you're moving towards the beach on Radhakrishna Salai, this place falls towards your left. The Woodland's hotel is a prominent building and too hard to miss.

Ambience - not much to talk about. Seems like a run of the mill sort of place with no real setup per se. As a matter of fact, there is absolutely nothing in terms of ambience that I'm reminded of as I pen down this review.

Staff and service - painfully slow and terribly upsetting. The order was duly noted in less than about 5 minutes after we were seated but our order arrived about 20-25 minutes later which was irritating to say the least. Disappointing is the word.

Food and menu - the menu is an elaborate one and has funny pricing with the amounts mentioned up to a couple of decimal places, probably because the taxes were incorporated in the same. Their chana bhatura had garnered some praiseworthy words from a friend of mine and I chose to rely on his recommendation. If not for the missing salt, they almost got that right. Bhatura was dripping with oil which is obvious and the chana had a thick gravy with the right mixture of spice leading to an aroma and taste one would relish. Alas, that pinch of salt went missing!

Sambhar vada was the other preparation we ordered and although it tasted quite alright, I've definitely had better ones. Sambhar lacked the sourness of tamarind and the sambhar masala was slightly overpowering. No problems with the vadai. Aspects such as the crispiness and softness on the inside of the vadai were in place.

3 servings of chana bhatura and a couple of sambhar vadai cost us in the vicinity of 600/- which I'd say isn't expensive but I'm more than certain about the availability of far better options in the city which offer better quality in terms of taste at much reasonable prices. Unless they bring about a drastic transformation and really up the ante, I don't see my rating change the slightest bit.

Good place for South Indian food. I had the South Indian Thali which was fairly decent. Also tasted the dahi vada, that was good as well. There was complementary ice cream so all to the good.

One of its own kind of hotel serves both authentic meal and other indian food in one place with great balance . Easy to grab a bite for breakfast if have time to spend.

I've always preferred this place for a quick bite to eat. I would never say it's cheap because the food is quite pricey.
But I like it a lot!
Simple and true south Indian and north Indian main dishes are served. They don't delay and ensure service is fast. If you're looking to go for a hearty meal.... definitely visit here.

Located inside New Woodlands complex on Cathedral road, this small restaurant still retains the old Madras charm. Despite being old school, the ambience is reasonably good. I had south Indian thali for lunch and it tastes really good. If am going there for another time its because of their service more than anything else. The staff are to be appreciated for their courteous service.

Nestled inside the New Woodlands complex in the heart of the city, this restaurant is known for it's tradition and taste. It is one of the iconic restaurants of the city and was in my wishlist for a really long time. Today had a chance to visit here and have their famous lunch thali.

Further thing which struck me is the hospitality of the staff. Right from the one who takes the order to the one who serves you, everyone is so gentle, friendly and welcoming. They serve with a smile. Even without you asking they refill the side dishes and remind is the items which will be served next. Everyone who aspires to work in the hospitality industry must visit this place at least once to get themselves trained in how to provide courteous service.

Coming to the food, the thali was fairly comprehensive. The pooris were good, not that oily. Dhal served with ghee was awesome. Sambar was very good. More Kolambu was below average. Rasam and curd were brilliant. Poriyal and kootu were good. Rice was well cooked. Appalams were well fried and were devoid of oil. Paalkollukattai was the sweet that was served on that day which was tasty. Icecream and beeda rounds off the meal. On the whole, the thali was good but the pricing was a bit on the higher side considering the variety on the plate and overall taste.

I ate here because I stayed in New Woodlands Hotel recently. I had Rava Masala Dosa which was really tasty and filter coffee which was just too perfect. They serve South Indian Thalis as well which I am sure would be good. One Tamil friend endorsed it as well!

This restaurant has stood the test of time... Even my father during his early days has talked about the food here.. We were just in time for the meals.. There were about 20 ppl in queue ahead of us.. It was about 15 odd minutes until we got a seat.. Meals was very good.. Not much variety like the rajasthan Thali if you have not been here.. There is a poori sabbji to start.. White rice pippin hot.. Sambar dhal rasam morekuzhambu curry vethakuzhambu curd ice-cream and pan.. Avoid pan.. Did not taste well.. The rest was an absolute steal for the price it was on offer 165 plus taxes.. Hearty meal.. South Indian meal.. Lost for words..

Really great place for snacking on any normal day.
Great south Indian snacks and the coffee is noteworthy too.
I know a bunch of people who enjoying frequenting this restaurant when they're in the mood for light munching in the late afternoons or evenings.
we have been going to woodlands since 1980s
I should say this part I know it's a south Indian and north Indian restraunt but one day we went there and my sister was not feeling well and we took her she said she didn't really want anything and I was very hungry so I ordered the spagetti napoliten I am not sure of the spelling but it's really good she looked at me secretly told my mom ordered one for herself I loved it and when ever we go there my father without fail orders a rasam wada the waitor I don't know his name but kudos to him as he gives me special masala papad lol! he knows it love it . From then I think we have been having spagetti napoliten. I will surely recommend this place and have aldeready qnd he has to been having spagetti napoliten. lol!!!!!!

ambience- very pleasant
food -awesome, epic....mouth watering
service -very very very very epic Idk If that is correct English lol
Woodlands has been the traditional family restaurant of most chennaities due to it's economical south Indian food.
The south Indian meals is a substitute for home food. Its that good and since its unlimited one cannot remain hungry.
The south Indian counterparts are good but the north Indian food is not that great here. Butter naans are hard and difficult to bite and the curries have a south Indian flavour to it unable to taste the north Indian flavours which are supposed to be there.
Ambience is not that great as its an old restaurant. Service is remarkably quick.
