Review Hotel Shri Balajee Bhavan Restaurant - Chennai (Madras)

Easily one of the best food joints in Pondy Bazaar. Ambience: Lots of activity always with inflow and outflow of guests. Go for A/C hall if you prefer silence. Food: Great taste especially their dosas Variety: Wide variety Service: Always ready to serve with a smile. What you give is what you get. Price: Very high value for money

Overall, it is a good hotel to have good food all three times. Starting from a morning coffee till dinner, this hotel does better. Has few branches in other places in the city. Little costly, but the quality is good. The ground floor has non ac service, and the first floor has ac service. In the Pondy Bazar area, this hotel can be chosen if looking for a quick, not so high costly hotel. Will be mostly crowded only.

Food was really good and tasty. Its kids and elderly people friendly place with low spicy option. We visited with family during evening time and ordered evening snacks, Mild dinner, Coffee and Tea. Everything is fresh and hot. I would definitely recommend this place. My kids like the fish tank very much. Good place to conbine your shopping and food in pondy Bazaar. (They have non A/C hall in downstairs which is crowded, so we chose A/C restaurant in first floor)

We visited the place at about 7:30 AM on a typical Saturday and the food was really nice. I ate 4 idlis with sambar and chutney and the food was really filling. The filter coffee was also really tasty. I will definitely come here again for breakfast.

I have been to this place a lot of times since childhood. This restaurant has both AC and non AC halls. The food is very tasty and the rate is economical. During weekends and peak hours it is very crowded and we might have to wait in the queue. My all time favourite is the idly vadai combo, but all their south indian tiffin options are a must try. The coffee is good. Must visit when around pondybazaar.

Nice pure veg restaurant... lot of veg variant of famous non-veg delicacies like Kari dosai, idli salna,.. tried Kari dosai, tasty 👌

Went to Balaajee Bhavan at night. The restaurant is always busy because it's located at Pondy Bazaar. The service is good but sometimes it takes longer. We had dahi puri, chapati and plain roast. The dahi puri came first and was really tasty. The dosa and chutneys tasted good. The chapati was okay but the kurma was just so-so. The food was served on banana leaves which was good.

I went to this restaurant recently. Located in the prime location - Pondy Bazaar, T Nagar, Chennai. The quality and taste of the food was very good. An authentic veg restaurant. Good to go along with family and children too.

One of the best ever coffee that I have had.. You can smell the flavour of the brewing coffee even in front of the restaurant. Apart from that, other foods were also good. Especially they provide zeera water in the morning.

One of the best vegetarian restaurant food I have had in a while. The quality of veggies and ingredients they use is really good for the taste buds and stomach.

Highly recommend trying the dahi vada, rava dosa and idly/sambar combo! My parents and I loved it, hot food served on a traditional banana leaf 😄 our server, Saravana Kumar, was full with positive energy and very friendly too!

Had lunch at this place consisting of vada sambar, chapatthi with raita and kurma and finishing it off with a couple of gulab jamuns for desert. It is located on Sir Thyagaraja Road next to A2B restaurant. A good place to have food after shopping at Pondy Bazaar. They serve meals and tiffin items as well during lunch time. Must specifically mention that the food was served on plantain leaves. Overall a fine South Indian Vegetarian restaurant to have food be it breakfast, lunch or dinner.
BORED OF BINGING
Shri Balaajee Bhavan . What a place for fooding after the shopping in T.Nagar . It is located in first floor of the building . They have the awesome dish to serve you with awesome taste . Don't forget to try there paronth generally the prontha is available in most of the resturent in Chennai but you try there parontha once. You wil love it. Price are little bit high due to presence in T.Nagar at prime location. So, the whole experience is good there and I suggust you to go once .

Very average restaurant in terms of taste. Well located at busy Pondy Bazar. Mushroom Fried Rice was good and tasted like Chicken Fried Rice. Seating were arranged in ground floor as well but A2B nearby we need to climb up making it difficult for aged people.

One of the most amazing places to have South Indian Tiffen items (I've only tired so much). I've been to this place a very countable number of times but the taste and the quality of the food is really amazing. In this things I've tried (stuff thst I have tried : Idly with Vadacurry, Dosa, Ghee roast, Ghee masala dosa, Chola poori, and falooda.Chola Poori was so amaizng to me and I loved it so much. Xinsdier trying the Chola poori if you're a fan of it.

Service was good and staffs were polite and helpful

Vegetable fried rice - was not exactly like the original fried rice . Flavours could have been better .

Gobi machurian dry and mushroom manchurian dry - since it machurian both have the same base and ingredients . Taste was okay .

Quantity and price is reasonable

Dosa was so bad and couldn't even eat. Very bad experience

Better than other eateries near by Pondy Bazaar. Bit costly but provide quality food with adequate quantity. Was a life saver when we visited Chennai, as most of the eateries offer bad quality food at higher prices too

If you are looking for an authentic south indian place to dine this is the place you should
A place to dine after a full day shopping
It's always busy so there may be a waiting list
The dishes are top notch
Especially their vadacurry
Courteous staff
Amazing food
nice hotel to have vegetarian food at a reasonable cost in the t nagar area. the ambience at the ground floor is not so great but it is okay. car parking is bit inconvenient due to the space and the location. service was done promptly and clean.

So, after many trips to this place, here it is. The least you can do is to be polite and equal in service. Waiters cimmenting loudly in some woman, sub par food and shabby service. Sad to see this in tnagar

Went for lunch today. Ordered lollypop and tandoori meals. Tandoori meals consisted of gulab jamun, 2 rotis, paneer butter masala, Gobi Manchurian dry, raita, veg briyani, tomato soup, and curd rice. Soup was okayish. Manchurian had just 3 pieces of Gobi. Gulab jamun was good, while curd rice and veg briyani had almost no salt. Raita was a bit sour and had no salt. Veg lollypop was actually bad that the taste of the chilly powder was very strong as in undercooked and of course had almost no salt. On the bill was 347 which I felt was useless for the quality. This was in the AC hall, btw

My Experience With Shri Balajee Bhavan was good.
Usual South Indian North and Chinese Vegetarian Food menu.
It was good and neat.
It has Fine Dining with many Sofas and Chairs with Air conditioning at First Floor

Its's Located in Thyagaraja Road Pondy Bazaar T.Nagar.

Okay, so last month I was at this place late evening. This place was suggested by a local lady standing just below this bhavan. Thanks to her I got to meet the manager (i hope you remember me) who was so kind enough to make sure I don’t face language barrier and have the best meal from their outlet. So I ordered one podi oothapam which was a mix veg oothapam with some local sabzi and sambhar with coconut chutneys and one filter coffee as suggested by the manager. I really had an amazing evening meal. Would love to go there again and try something new from their menu. Since I am not based in Chennai, would love to have one outlet here if you guys can.

It's my second time, I visited the place. Quiet crowded in the evenings and that's bound to happen being in the heart of lonely bazaar.
Downstairs general dining and upstairs AC room.
Stairs are quiet steep so elderly people need to be extra careful.
Parking is a problem better if you walk but crossing road isn't easy.

The ambience is not calm, quite loud I would say.
Food comes on time and the service is decent.
We ordered roti and butter paneer masala. Fried idli's plus cauliflower dosa. The food was decent.
Quantity fine and taste ok.
Cleanliness ok
Hand wash and bathroom well maintained.

Shri Balaajee Bhavan, located in the ever crowded streets of Pondy bazaar, is one of the best veg restaurants. This is usually my 'go to' place when it comes to breakfast. They are usually open pretty soon compared to the other restaurants in the surrounding. I had been here, mostly with my family, some four or five times. Here goes my review on various dining experiences..

I usually go with Mini tiffin here. You get to have one Idly, Dosa or Poori, vada, Pongal, Coffee/tea and sweet (usually kesari). Taste wise I can't really complain! I have also tried Pongal - Vada combo. It's pretty good and goes well with Chutney and sambhar. Even their coffee is usually strong and refreshing to have!

I would say that this restaurant serves one of the best breakfast/tiffin in this locality. Definitely worth visiting.

Happy eating :)

I went to shopping with family in Pondy Bazaar, being lunch time, decided to go with this place based on my satisfying experience in other branches. This place is easy to locate. Have big sign board for easy identification. Parking of 4 wheeler is always a challenge in T.Nagar however managed to get one.

Ambiance is simple and decent. Have AC and non AC seating options. Have many tables and chairs to accommodate decent size of crowd. Got our table without waiting. Not sure whether it is possible always. Service is decent. Food served in reasonable time.

Ordered south Indian meals. Almost everything came with meals are pretty decent. I would say not up to chromepet branch meals in terms of taste. Always there is a scope for improvement. Nevertheless good option to try in that location. Price is reasonable.

I ordered my food online and they accepted my order and I was waiting for my order. After 40 MINS I got an information from the hotel saying that the ordered food is not available
Worst

I dont know why this restaurant having above 4 Rating , Even AC content was not good here. We were went here at 2 clock Noon and ordered Roti, Bindi Do Pyaza , phulka , Veg Dhum biryani and chilly mushroom dry. Except Mushroom dry everything was tasteless and also there is no pinch of salt in our food , And tasteless too.

Lets come to the Quantity of the food Same except Mushroom dry everything was little only kids can have that food. You guys are charging more money and Plus GST too but not even Average Quantity you serving.

Ambience - 2.5 / 5 , AC content is too low. And tables and Floors are not well groomed.

The Food Ninja
Located at the midst of pondy bazaar, it's pretty much crowded all the time. The food is great. Special mention for their idiyaapam! One of the best in the city. Best in the locality for breakfast/tiffin.
Sentil
The menu here is quite old and the prices have changed a lot. Excellent place for lunch and breakfast. Gr8 service and have a feel like visiting again. This is my 12th visit.
Sujoy Biswas
Located in the heart of pondy Bazar, if you are looking for a authentic tamil Nadu meal, this is the place to be. The meal comes with a delicious sambhar, rasam, kozhambu, more, curd, payasam, ice cream. The rice is served steaming hot with generous amount of ghee poured over it. At the end one can just walk out happily after this meal

What⁉️ : Mini Tiffin

The best way to start off the weekend with this happy plate which has all my favourite dishes💯❤Kesari, Soft Idli's, Crispy Mini Masala Dosa, Ghee Pongal and Crispy Hot Vada😍the variety of accompaniments including Vada Curry which most places don't provide unless ordered seperately and the garlic podi which they provide on request is finger licking good✋🏼👅💯😍

💰 Range : 30 - 150

Ps: One of the best places to have Mini tiffin👍🏼

DROP IN AFTER SHOPPING

Whenever me and my mom go for pondy bazaar Shopping, we are sure to hit balaji bhavan and sip a hot coffee with thayir vada or kuzhi panihaaram. Situated on the main road of pondy bazaar, this is a most loved place by all the shoppers who relish a cup of coffee after a tired purchasing. A very busy restaurant, especially in the evenings. I love their chole bhature, thayir vada, kuzhi panihaaram. Best known for their south Indian Tiffin. price is also very reasonable.

Have taken parceled food from this place many times after shopping in Pondy bazaar and have always liked it. So yesterday evening decided to dine-in with my family of 5.

We preferred sitting in the ground floor (non-AC) due to the older people being unable to climb to the 1st floor. We ordered for a ghee guntur podi idli, a rava dosa, onion rava dosa, veg rava dosa, special'5' poori, Ghee roast, Paneer Tikka masala and butter naan.

The plain rava and onion rava were amazing and super crispy. The veg rava dosa was a let down on taste, too much cabbage. The ghee guntur podi idli was exquisite, not your average molagai podi but more potent and tasty gun powder soaked in ghee.

The special '5' poori was 5 plain pooris with 5 different accompaniments (Channa, vadacurry, sambar, Aloo masala and korma). It was ok the sambar was not as good as it usually is, the three different chutneys were nice. The Ghee roast was err.. nicely roasted and very crispy.

My weird logic at these type of proper south indian hotels is that they make the best north Indian food. My logic did not let me down. The paneer tikka masala was very tasty with the right amount of spices and quantity was huge, though only 4 big paneer pieces were there. The butter naan was very soft.

To finish off I had a chocolate milkshake which was not the best decision. The milkshake quantity was good but the chocolate ice cream they used had a weird artificial flavour to it, I was able to finish it but did not enjoy.

Overall the bill for 5 came to ₹871 which was not bad for 5 people considering the prices these days.

I have been here like so many times... One of my favorite place in T nagar.. I am inclined to this place. Idk why.. I like this place very much.. Yesterday we went for dinner, we ordered tandoori meals, cauliflower masala dosa, guntur podi idly, kaima parotta, paneer pulao and last but the best a good filter coffee...
The tandoori meals was only okay.. It contains a soup, rotis, paneer butter masala, gobi manchurian, veg biriyani, raita, curd rice, gulab jamun.. The pb masala was sweet, biriyani was nice..
Guntur podi idly was simply awesome.... It was so fresh and hot.. The podi and the oil tasted so good..
Cauliflower masala dosa had a bit lot of spices. The sambar which they served yesterday with the south indian dishes was pretty different from the regular sambars.. Kaima parotta was also good.. And the paneer pulao was soo good.. It required a bit of salt else it would have been amazinggg. Was so satisfied here and finally for the nice cup of filter coffee.. Perfect way to end the day.. 😃😃

Will definitely visit this place again.. And again..

The review is completely based on my taste buds and my love for food. (no influence)..

Thank you 🙏
Sunday morning breakfast is always a bliss. Before staring an early shopping spree in t nagar, Pondy bazaar headed to this lovely outlet for a breakfast.
It’s prominently located in the buzzling locales of Pondy bazaar.
There is a both AC and Non AC outlets located and could find the usual templated interiors for balajee bhavan. By default, this outlet would be crowded especially during the prime time.
We settled in the AC outlet, and it was quite spacious. Went for my usual favourite Mini tiffin combo, a mini idly and masala dosa. The mini tiffin comprises of pongal, poori/mini masala dosa, Idly and vadacurry, vadai, kesari and a mini coffee. Indeed the mini tiffin combo was a lovely package and an economical one. Loved the Idly and Vada curry. The mini idly was filled with ghee which enhanced the lilting taste. The masala dosai was nice 👍
Overall, the breakfast experience was a lovely one. The service in balajee bhavan is always exceptional and indeed they match their standards.

VFM - 4/5
Service - 4.5/5
Taste - 4/5
Quality - 4/5
The Balajee Bhavan on Soundarapandianar Angadi aka Pondy Bazaar has been a lifesaver to me many a time. The place is usually super busy and one has to wait to get a table. We had a Pav Bhaji and an Andhra Chilli Idly. The Andhra nature of the dish took a while to hit us but it tastes great. I mean, it is moderately spicy, so be prepared for that rich spice attack on your taste buds. Personally, I love the Basundi at this place. The Paneer Butter Masala and Naan combination is also one of the highlights of this place.
Nithya Roopan
Excellent option to have south indian food- economical and decent place - separate floor for A/c- Podi idly fry is my favourite here but unfortunately it will not be there in the standard menu or elsewhere though other types of podi idlies are mentioned - Service is also very good

Ordered 2 meals for 6 of us at home from balance Bhavan . Last time the quantity was quite enough for us . But this time the quantity was less but the taste was great. Loved the tamil sapad

Went here with family. Meals were good . Had butter naan , gobi 65 and paneer butter masala. All tasted very good . Both hot and cold badam milk were awesome . Prompt service . 🙂

We had ordered a complete North Indian ala carte and the food was delicious. The quality and quantity was perfect.
We had visited on a public holiday and it was relatively crowded .The service was pretty good despite the crowd .
Overall value for money and the ambience was pretty good in the AC restaurant
Ramika Batra
Okay place.
Sat on the 1st floor - AC section.
a decent attempt to provide north indian food. Didn't try south indian delicacies yet so can't comment.
Ordered samosa chaat, dahi papdi, chilli parotta - not very tasty but okay.

The Shri Balaajee Bhavan in Pondi road is a popular mess that serves good vegetarian South Indian food, for cheap prices. The food is good, filling and it's great value for money The thalis - referred as 'meals' - are also beautiful and well worth a try; they're tasty, good value for money and are a true taste of the South Served on an steel tray - usually lined with a banana leaf - a array of colourful curries curves around the steel platter: curd rice ,rasam, dahl, dosa and so on served with a light, crispy pappadam sides dishes are usually replenished at request .I also had one plain dosa it was the most crispiest dosa I ever had but the cherry on the cake was authentic South Indian filter coffee if you are in Chennai do visit this eatery nothing fancy about the ambience but this place is surely a steal if you want to eat authentic South Indian food .
Sweta
A decent place for a quick bite of South Indian food. Would recommend this place to those who are in Pondy Bazaar area shopping and need a fast meal.

Foods are really delicious here. They open at 5am for early morning breakfast. Service is quite uncomfortable.3.5 out of 5 for south indian breakfast.

A Decent Food With Good Ambience. And a Good Service too. It satisfies your hunger very well. It is a pakka Family Cuisine type Restaurant. Overall review is all Its Good.

Food is good ..even North Indian food is good... service is fairly good...it was rush time when we went still got food at right time ..rate is reasonable

I always visit this place when I go shopping in Pondy bazaar, and the food is mediocre. I ordered a plain dosa, poor bhaji and bada sambar. Also I supposedly ordered a bhindi fry starter but that's actually a main written under the starter, so I eventually was forced to order phulka as well which I didn't want. I felt the person who waited on us should be able answer the queries asked by us about the dish which he wasn't able to.
Nithyalakshmi Sundar
My family always ordered meals from this place for every gathering! Their vethakozhambu is out of the world! Their sambar is also delicious! They cater for parties and functions and also serve even if the crown is as small as 15 members.
Poornima Kamalakannan
So there is a non-A.C. and A.C. sections... we dined at non-A.C. section bcoz A.C. was full... blame our climatic conditions 😬 we got seats easily.. no waiting... 😊 ordered spl veg dum briyani and panneer Manchurian dry..

Spl veg dum briyani- was neither spl nor like-it-cam-outa-dum 😑 was ok but they need to change its name... like seriously!! raising expectations can lead to disappointments 😒

Panneer Manchurian dry- tasted good... quantity can serve 2 ppl 👍

Food-3/5
Ambience-2/5 (they need to invest more on electronic fly killers 😑)
Service-3/5
Vfm-4/5

I've been visiting this place since I was a little kid. And this is my family's go-to restaurant. Here are the reasons. To start off with, it's located in Pondy Bazaar which is known for it's shopping. So you can go here to grab a quick bite. Next off, it's a 100% veg restaurant. The service is superb. Your food will arrive within minutes, which is a plus. And it's a full-and-full south Indian restaurant, so all of the south Indian cuisine is a bliss when eaten here. And I quite like the ambience too(AC section). Altogether, it's a very good place and I highly recommend it.
Also, try their pongal and chaat combo. Yummy is the word. :P
Jayasree Bhargavan
If you go during rush hour, it is going to be packed. The service is good and fast. Quality and quantity of food is good and quite pocket friendly when compared to other places. The place was neat and kept clean.

Nice Food and Good Service, Adai and avial was awesome, chutneys were refreshing, panneer fried rice was good, andhra podi idly was good and spicy.
Overall a good experience

Vegetarian means this hotel only will come first in my mind. having food here from last 6 years. Breakfast, lunch and supper every dish is tasty and not expensive. One of the best veg hotel in Chennai. Since its located in pondy bazaar we can visit frequently for any occasion.
Sudarshan Subramanian
Average food, not that great service. You are sure to have huge delays when you go at the peak times. Chinese takes time enough for your partner to finish his food.
Yesuthasen P
Dropped in for Sunday lunch and was pleasantly surprised to see a fairly neat, not so posh, air conditioned restaurant on the first floor.

We ordered one of the South Indian "meals" ( thali) . It was very good. it had all the usual suspects on the menu -- rice, podi with ghee, sambar, rasam, kootu, poriyal and a couple of other side dishes (all of which were replenished on request), curd, buttermilk, papadam, pickle and payasam. Everything you expect in a meal in the Sarvana Bhavans and Sangeethas of the world, plus a nice glass of superb watermelon juice.

Easy on the wallet and well worth further visits.
Vijaya
Visited here after a jog and they were up and ready by around 6:30 AM in the morning. Not everything is available right from.the begining but whatever they offer was pretty good. This is located on the busy pondy bazaar road.
All Day Hungry
Decent place with non ac and ac sections , came here for quick tiffin after shopping , well this is my first visit here , seems it's very old restaurant ..had masala dosa , mini idlies and filter coffee ,
1)Masala dosa -so crisp with right portion of filling and served with three chutney and sambar .
2)Mini idlies- 14 mini idlies soaked in sambar n served with ghee on top , so yum and melts in mouth .
3) filter coffee - frothy and strong , just the way I love my filter coffee
Overall experience -
Food 3.5/5
Ambience -3/5
Parking -3.5/5

visited this place after shopping in t.nagar.the place is crowded during the busy lunch time.we got tables in ac hall after waiting for 15 mins.ordered south indian meals, set dosa vada curry and chapathi.all items tasted good. and decently priced.vada curry is little spicy for my taste.quantity is sufficient and service is very slow.

Magizchi! - That would be the feeling one would get having their meals in the non-AC section!

A very much nominally priced meal. INR 90 for a meal and one would be into an amazing display of the Tamil food culture. Located in Pondy Bazzar, this place is hard to miss amidst the shopping scenes of T.Nagar. Anyone would direct you to Balaajee Bhavan if asked, such is the fame.

I would love to dine in at the non-AC section any day, considering the pleasant aroma of the food being cooked in the kitchen. It would definitely please anyone when compared to the chill AC section. With not much of speculation on the menu card which has a quite a lot of items from breakfast to dinner, ordered their meals as I was there for lunch.

Limited quantity of rice served with : Sambar, Puli Kolambu, Parupu curry, Kootu, Poriyal, Rasam, Curd, Milagai, Pongal, Appalam. Its hard to describe the taste. Go with an empty stomach and you'll be in euphoria post having their meals.

Reasonably quick service and pocket friendly prices!

Went on a Friday evening. The hotel was much crowded to my surprise. Finally got a place and ordered Kaima Parotta. It was superb. The ambience was fair and the staffs were also good. Worth a try for Vegetarians.

"A veggie to be in" restaurant. First time I'm visiting here and I was astounded of the taste here. Food wt good taste and worth ur money.. Initially ordered special meals for my family.. all items were too good. I didnt notice the items rather I was too much involved in eating my own food 👼
Ordered cream of tomato soup. It was served at its best wt corn and bread dumplings. Tastes yum yum 😍
For Time killers I ve ordered veg spring roll wch was too good..crispy and golden..and tasty stuff inside it wt veggies and paneer..
Mains - butter naan and paneer butter masala - my all time favourite.. never have eaten paneer wt such a taste like here..t was too soft tat it had almost melt in my mouth. Butter naan was good and crispy outside and soft to tear and have..
Ended with ice cream and milkshake...badam milkshake was good wt badam flavoured ice cream and a mild saffron wt nuts added to it.
All range of ice creams available here..definitely with your money and still compared to other veg restaurants it's cheap and a not a bad ambience to be in..u cud enjoy tasty food 😍👼

Would rate 5 for a better ambience and more variety on food 😃

Was wandering around pondy Bazar in search of a place to sit and relax with and quick bite, and was destined to this place.

Wasn't much impressed by the looks, but on going through Zomato reviews,I was pretty impressed.

On the most happening pondy Bazar, this place was full with crowd.Luckily got two seats.

We just wanted to eat away time with some food,so just went for a pavbhajji and a classic Lassi.Food was great.

I shouldn't be rating with place with just one dish but then their service is what stood out for me.Though the place was busy with flocking crowd, ppl working there are very much humble and at your service.

Awaiting my visit soon.

Located in Pondy bazaar, this is a veg restaurant serving nice South Indian items, chaat, sandwiches and so on. 😍🌯It's heavily crowded most of the time. It has both ac and non-ac seating. I've been here twice and loved the experience both the times. 👍

This time we had time to kill ⏰and just walked in for a quick bite. Despite the crowd, the service was very fast and attentive. 😊Our order was simple. A Pav bhaji and a plain lassi. 🎉

The order arrived really soon and Pav was soft and came along with a lot of onions, just the way I like it. The lassi was thick and creamy. It was perfect. 😊

All this for ₹114. 💰A very good place around here. Value for money and pocket friendly. 💛

It is a very well maintained and always crowded restaurant in Pondy Bazar. Enjoyed their Dosa, poori, Chapathi. Even some +ve energy is being felt in the restaurant and service is also quick and good. I feel this one is ahead of Geetha Café in terms of cleanliness, maintenance. This restaurant deserves better ratings

Regular breakfast joint for me, been coming since 1989, no change in the taste. Standard south Indian fare rocks! Their sambar is dish by itself.

Wow! Fantastic one. A very good hotel ! These days famous restaurants of Veg cuisines like HSB etc are losing standards, while this is growing .. The south indian meals is awesome! Loved it. Just came with hunger! Really filled with good food.! The food cost is normal only. It has A/c restaurant upstairs, which is really good and elegant.Suits for family friends. You will get the satisfaction for sure.

1st visit
Andra pesaratu and coffee. Although the pesaratu was not like how I had in Hyderabad, it was good and the sambar was soooo good. Coffee was rich and strong.
2nd visit
Meals. Definitely worth the money.

I always have this feeling that these Bhavans in Chennai lacks service. I don't know is it because they don't pay them well or is it because they serve so many ppl at a time. But I feel food is something which u should value so much and when u serve it u should feel like doing a noble service but they don't get it and they don't do it properly.

One of the age old joints that has been a pitstop to shoppers at what was Chennai's biggest shopping hub - Pondy Bazaar. Used to visit here a lot as a kid post our Diwali and birthday shopping and in the recent years haven't really eaten much here

My friends and colleagues swear by the meals here and unfortunately I have never tried that. I have been told almost all items are good and the inclusion of dal powder is the icing on the cake.

Pricing - economically priced. They are a budget family restaurant

Service - typically quick. But sometimes they could take forever (my recent order for onion rava took close to 1minutes to be served)

Ambience - the air-conditioned area is comfortable and recommended. If you are looking to save a few bucks you could sit in semi-steam room in the ground floor.

Recent orders: idly, pongal and onion rava.
Minus the onion rava, other two dishes were great. The onion rava had too little onion and was bland in flavour.

Love their coriander and coconut chutneys; sambar a little spicier is quite good as well.

This is my stop everytime I'm in T nagar for shopping. I undoubtedly love South Indian food and I've tried almost every local South Indian joint but this place is awesome. I'm in deep love with their sambar and chutneys. Their idlis are spongy and soft and I love it!

Recently visited this restaurant along with my wife. It had both non ac and ac dining halls. We chose the ac hall on the first floor. I wanted to taste their mushroom masala dosai which had gotten over by the time we went there. Hence I settled for idly and 5 type poori set. My wife had paneer fried rice and gobi 65. Idly was very soft with very tasty sambar, coconut, tomato and puthina chutneys, and idly podi. There was absolutely no room for any disappointment as far as their idly was concerned. Paneer fried rice was also good but I am still puzzled as to why they provide raita as accompaniment for fried rice. Gobi 65 was passable. It needed little more spice and salt to make better. Finally the 5type special poori was a disappointment. I thought they would serve poori of five different flavours or types but all did they serve was 5 same type pooris with 5 different side dishes, channa masala, potato masala, vegetable kuruma, vadacurry and tomato chutney. Service was good and the cost was nominal.

Had breakfast here sunday morning. Ordered Pongal vadai and vendhaya dosai. peoples visiting here should try pongal vadai, it costs 75 rupees. it is served with sambar and 3 types chutney. Serving is fast. And vendhaya dosai came with vada curry, its not so good but above avg. worth multiple visits. and value for money.

Had dinner at this place with my family, the regular dishes arrive quickly and others take a little more time. We had idili sambar, masala dosa, onion uttapam and apple lassi. The food was not so remarkable but I'll never tell anyone not to come here. The service is very good.

I went there with my family and I enjoyed the lunch. First we ordered tomato soup and we asked two split as four. We had more breads in our soup, the soup was hot and tasty.

Then we ordered dum aloo, dhal, roti, naan, butter naan, garlic kulcha, kulcha and aloo paratha. All of them were delicious. The dum aloo was spicy and awesome. I loved it. I enjoyed the food experience.

The service and ambience were good and I would recommend this hotel as the food is good in quality, quantity and taste. It goes with your budget as well.

Good South Indian tiffin items. I particularly like their idli podi. Their Andhra podi idli, podi dosa, adai and regular idli are very good. Coffee is also nice. It is a simple sit, eat and leave type of restaurant. Pretty crowded, so food is definitely fresh!

Had late breakfast here this morning at around 10:30 am, ordered an onion oothapam for myself. Though it was late, the crowd was heavy and kept coming in. It was really a simple order, yet filling and delicious. One the hotels where you receive best customer service. Pocket friendly rates

Superb South Indian food, especially breakfast.

This is just round the corner from home in Madras. A simple eatery that serves all South Indian dishes made the Tamilnadu-style. All of them are yummy. Pongal, medu vadai, kuzhi paniyaram, dosas, idlis, Kanchipuram Idlis, khichdi....check out these good, old Tamil favourites.

You'd better avoid the North Indian food here - they taste more Chettinad than North Indian. :)

The ambience is nothing much; you just go in, order, eat and come out. The focus is definitely on the food.

If you are in T.Nagar, definitely visit this place. Very good value for money, much better than other hyped restaurants like Adyar Ananda Bhavan and Saravana Bhavan.

After a tiring and draining shopping in T Nagar, mom and I were starving. We found Sree balaajee bhavan right opposite were we where and we checked the rating on Zomato and then entered the place.
The first impression was that it looked like a hotel focussing on food . Ambience wasn't all that great but just enough.
We took a look at the menu and we ordered 2 Chennai Special Meals for lunch because of the variety it had.
The first to arrive was the soup which was just okay, but the bread in it was yumm and crispy.
Then came the meal plate . We had one chapathi with Kuruma as the side dish both of were nice. The chapathi was soft and the Kuruma was right , not too spicy or bland. The platter had a spinach pachadi, a pumpkin kootu , raitha for the chapathi, paruppu podi, vatha kozhambu, rasam , radish sambar, plantain ( vazhakka ) poriyal, payasam and ice cream.
The vatha kozhambu was my favorite and it had ladies finger in it which tasted really good.
The spinach pachadi is something I have never had before and had a very distinguishing taste. It was nice.
The kootu had white channa dal in it which I don't see in hotels usually.
The only negative was that the curd was really sour.
I tried the 'amukku and gummuk' way of eating the payasam with the Appalam as taught by the put chutney video - Banana Leaf 101.
The over all meal was just too yum and filling. They were also liberal with their quantity in serving.
Balaajee truly deserves a 4.5 only for the food it serves and the service they provide. It scores low only on the ambience which is just about enough and not too fancy.

This restraunt is ok and the main thing to talk about is ambience : the restraunt is always packed and its hard to be comfortable on those chairs and if its jam packed with no space then the waiters tell you to go upstairs in the ac dining (even if you dont want to) which is a litle comfortable with a wonderful view of the street which always has people walking on it , but it has a problem : its way more costlier . The food is not so good and can be termed as ok . The chat(including samosa) is not so good and the samosa is not crispy at all . The vada and idlis are ok and the chutney with the idli is really not tasty at all . You can visit this place if you want a quick evening snack when it is not crowded
Must try - vada
Loving the fact that they open at 5:30AM and that was the main reason we visited this place after one early morning bday surprise for a friend.
I had Idli, vada and coffee.
Idlis and vada were extremely soft.. Vada was soooo light, fluffy and crispy.
Service, so this extremely sweet and patient person served us. He kept suggesting us all the dishes.
Absolutely loved the food, a very satisfying breakfast. We felt the food was completely worth the money.

After a heavy shopping, saravana bhavan was full and we had to go here as my mom was very hungry, she had a thali and i had noodles.

Food was great no complaint, but my noodles was a little oily and the service was really really bad. The waiter for my table was pretty rude and i had to ask him to bring our food and fill water 3 times and he kept showing faces :/

Don't be here during weekend. AC hall was full so they made party hall as dinning. Hall filled with plastic chairs. I though food will be good, but had worst experience having soup, roti with panner masala and aloo paratha. Normal taste for south indian, dosa and poori. Nothing special here.

Veggie Hunters
Located at T.Nagar , Shri Balajee Bhavan is very famous and always crowded. They have been consistently offering quality veg food for a long time here and relatively recent tweaks in their infrastructure and ambience has made it a bankable restaurant experience to visit them.

They have a good variety of food from South Indian , North Indian , Chat and Chinese. The prices are quiet cheap considering the quality and quantity they offer. The dosas and idly varieties here are really good and are generally served with tasty sambar and chutneys. They have Air conditioned hall in first floor which has excellent ambience and service too. In ground floor sometimes the service is not great and you'd have to wait before getting a table. Coming back to food , the north indian gravies can be improved a lot and so are the chinese dishes. But the south indian counterparts more than make up for them. They have covered all kinds of south indian dishes like Andhra Podi Idly , Rava idly , Set Dosa , Kaima Parotta , Guntoor Podi Idly etc. But some of these dishes are available only on certain days of the week. Among north indian gravies we always used to order Tandoori Gobi Masala which has deep fried cauliflower coated with 65-batter cooked in a coconut-spices based gravy. They also serve a very good Palak Panneer and Panneer Fried Rice. The starters here are well made but they let us down with sauces that accompany them. They dont even serve a proper ketchup to go with food. The lunch and dinner combos available here are worth the price and filling too. The chinese menu can be extended with more varieties of rice and noodles like chopsuey and even the existing dishes can be improved. The chat varieties are usually satisfying and juices and milkshakes are good too.

Must Try : Tandoori Gobi Masala , Dosa and Idly Varieties , Vadacurry.
Ambience : 3.5/5
Food Taste : 4/5
Price : 4/5
Variety Across Cuisines : 3/5
Service : 3.5/5

Overall : 3.5/5

Good vegetarian food and very reasonable price. location is at the center of t nagar at pondi baazar main road, it is not very difficult to find.parking might be an issue though.

The quantity is very reasonable and taste is also nice. One of the best meal in town.

The service is very quick and responsive as well.

A must visit place for good mix of south and north Indian food lovers.
Particularly if you are going with family , where people of all ages are there , they won't get disappointed.
Classic menu , nothing new..but they does it well :D

Usually when we visit T.Nagar, we prefer only Saravana Bhavan. One fine day for a change we tried this place, and guess what everything was soo good. Price, quantity, taste and service was much better than saravana. We ordered guntur podi idly, it was the best idly i have tasted in the city. Idly was sooo soft and podi added a kick to the idly. A must visit place, i am sure once u try this place, u probably will never look back at saravana etc.
