Review The Bayleaf - Chennai (Madras)

dhruv kumar
A good place for enjoying a nice bengali cuisine. The dry banana cutlet (mochar chop), aloo poshto (not in menu but they will serve it), pea stuffed puri (koraishuti'r kachori or lucci) and kosha mutton were especially great. The other items are also good, but these above mentioned items are of worth trying. Altough the ambience is mediocre, and service is also average, their quality and taste of food were extremely good and satisfying. It also can't accomodate more than 30 people and they can't sit together too. If ambience and service would have been better it could easily get a 5 star, but food taste is still noticeable.

Kind of the only fine dining Bengali restaurant in town. The prices are a little steep compared to what you get as food. They are kind of playing on their monopoly I would assume. Certain items are good like their dhokar dalna and mochar chop. I personally don't prefer their chicken dishes, maybe because my mom makes way too good food compared to this. That aside it's a nice cozy place with good interiors. Check out their antic ceiling fan , it runs too !! Location is quite convenient but parking is less. If you are in town and badly craving bangali food I would definitely recommend.
Supratik Sadhukhan
One of the best places to eat if you're a bengali. The food, atmosphere and the service is very good. Had mocha r chop, bhetki r paturi, mutton kosha and chicken biriyani, all of them were very nice and tasty. The staff is very nice. If you come here then you should definitely try bhetki r paturi and mocha r chop.

Bayleaf is an authentic Bengali resturant in midst of namma Singara Chennai! Bengalis Are sweet toothed from birth. So let me start with desserts - Gulab Jamun = Yumm, Mishti Doi = Yumm Yumm! Food is very good. They cook in mustard oil. Non Bengalis please note. Very good options available in veg and non veg. They also have couple Jain food options. They Have introduced some north indian dishes in the menu. I wish they haven't but it is ok. They also have specials during Durga Puja and Kali Puja. Service is good. The wait staff are dedicated and have remained the same since the restaurant opened. Do go with their suggestion if you are a first timer. They will suggest you the best combo based on your preference of choice of Veg, meat n spice levels.

I would say it's definitely one of the good restaurants that serves Bengali food and to my surprise I could barely taste the mustard oil! I think that's because they have fine-tuned the food for the people of Chennai. The food tasted good and service was okay. I definitely had a good time :)

Excellent food. Quality and quantity very good. šŸ˜ Service is also very good.

Authentic bengali good in chennai with good ambience. Must visit with families . Space is small and difficult to get seats , so book in advance . Parking is difficult due to narrow road, but sometimes they do have valley parking to help with. Go for it and savour your taste buds.
Bharatanritya School of dance
I as a bengali went to this restaurant to eat their bengali food. Service was good and ambience was excellent. However, out of what we ordered the chicken was too spicy. The murgh malai Tikka was hot and tasty, so would recommend The ice cream Sandesh was excellent and it is a must try. Overall, it was an excellent Bayleaf of food and would recommend whenever you are in Chennai.

An awesome restaurants in Chennai that gives you a taste of authentic Bengali cuisine. The ambience of the restaurant feels even more homely with nice staff behaviour.
Preetham shyam sundar
They have Bengali, North Indian, Tandoor and Chinese Cuisines. It was very tasty and fresh. Pricing is slightly higher than what it is supposed to be. Hygiene and quality of food was really good. Service is excellent. For one adult it would cost 700 INR. Place for parking is a problem. Not sure if they have ballet parking. You can check. Ambience of the restaurant awesome.
Shinju S
Good quality food and hygiene maintained. A bowl of any curry is suitable for two individuals. But they take plenty of time to serve, approx 35-45mins. Another thing, I felt was wash basin( a record breaking tiny one) is just outside the main dining area instead of being inside the restaurant. No toilets too. Rest its good for a family/group dining probably. Parking area is very less probably for two cars. Mutton curries are approx. 500 and above. Veg pulao costs somwhere around 230ā‚¹. Average cost per person goes around 600-700.

The best Bengali food in Chennai. The food is authentic with almost all bengali food in the menu. Only place were you get the authentic Bengali Katti roll. Ingredients are fresh. I got a sneek peek to the kitchen and must say one of the cleanest kitchen that i have seen by far. Sure is a place for comfort food.
Paritosh Bag
The best place for Bengali Foods in Chennai. Must try chicken items. Authentic Bengali Atmosphere with musics. I have enjoyed a lot here. Highly Recommended.

If you are looking forward a great bengali food then a must try!! After having veg chop and mishti doi, your tongue will thank you for such a great flavor!

As a Bangladesh I can tell It's not pure Bengali but they have done a good job for sure. Tried the mutton jhol curry, it was so delicious. Staff's were amazing.
Indrani Nandy
Good ambiance, all items are delicious. Great place for bongs. But the price is competitivly high.
Chandan Guha
Mouth watering food under one roof.

Its a bengali's paradise in Chennai!! Special Mention : The Bhetki Paturi!!

My favourite place in Chennai. Best Bengali food. I have been there so many times and loved it more every time. We went in a huge group during Durga Puja and they were having theme menu. Perfect. Enjoyed a lot!

Even fried potato is Rs.270 not worth it at all. We better go for Bengali fun foods or petuk it's way better than this restaurant in taste and cost.
Foodie
I ordered Kausha murgh which was extremely delicious and also my first order from this restaurant. Since i liked the food so much, I ordered again, which was special Lucknow biryani. But to my amazement, food wasnā€™t upto the mark, it was ok, and quantity was not as per the price. And yes , it wasnā€™t a Lucknow biryani at all.
Soumya Sen
Totally loved the food here. One of the best places to try out authentic Bengali food. Loved the mutton curry, fish fry, chicken roll, bhaja plate and dim er dalna. It was wonderful having a koraishutir kochuri with aludum after such a long time. The Daab Chingri could have been better though, found it a little sweet. The Malpua with Rabri was brilliant! The prices on the menu are also quite correct matching the quality. Loved it!

Bayleaf is a Bengali restaurant in Gopalapuram Chennai which is on the high end side unlike petuk. The way they prepare and serve the food however makes the high cost worth it. Their menu includes an array of alleviated as well as simple dishes daab chingri, dhakai chingri or simply fulkopir dalna. Inframe: Baati chochori and rui machher kalia served with steaming bowls of long fragrant rice. If you like pancakes, then this sweet dish will be hard to miss for you! Malpua is a popular dessert recipe of North Indian cuisine and is something that you can prepare easily at home. It is a famous delight during festivals and can be prepared in several ways depending on the region. In frame: Malpua from bayleaf. Absolutely indulging. So I had the pleasure of visiting bayleaf on Ashthami this Durga Puja and try the Sharodiya menu. Here's a shot of golden moong dal with peas accompanied by the iconic chingri machher malai curry.

We actually ordered a roll outside at otg they were taking time so we asked them to bring inside the restaurant . We ordered other dishes inside. Suddenly one of the captains comes and without any thing he charges with assumptions that outside food is not allowed we are allowing this time n stuff the staff was super rude. Beware of the staff they can bite you anytime!

The place is small but cozy and clean. If you are looking for authentic Bengali food in Chennai this can come nearest to it.<br/><br/>The afternoon started with an average experience as mild spinach soup had no flavor at all, though gosht rassa soup was yummy. And lemon mojito wasn't cold enough. But after that everything was amazing. Bekti Fish Fry (deep crumb fried fish cutlets) and Bekti Paturi (fish steamed in mustard covered in leaves) were well cooked. Though I would have preferred larger portion size for the latter. In mains Luchi and Chholar Dal was good. And Murghir Jhol (Bengali style chicken curry) with Steamed Rice was an excellent combination. And we topped it off with a really yum Mishti Doi in desserts.<br/><br/>Apart from this they served complimentary paan shots at the end, which were good too.

Decent ambience, liked the taste of fish kobiraji. Mutton kosha was good but not authentic, Misti doi - apart from serving in an earthen pot, long way to match the real taste.

Thank you

Very friendly service and Food was good. Wanted to try their other ala carte dishes.crispy fried lotus stem was awesome liked it alot.ordered Cheese fondue malai paneer tikka but only tikka was presented cheese fondue was missing.. little disappointment there but otherwise food and service was good

I loved the place The food was delicious,i went there for so many times and waiters are humble enough

Left after waiting for an hour inspite of an advance booking for 3 pax. No-one even bothered to follow through. I waited patiently on the road with an elderly mother and a child. Met the manager twice who once said "wait" and look through me the next time. Finally bought rolls from the OTG counter after one hour and left. Very disappointed since I have been a regular customer for 17 years now!
Debayan Tewari
A good place off the busy Cathedral Road. The food, staff and ambience are much better than in the hotels around. We went after 10pm, the quieter the better when dining. Price-wise it's pocket-friendly as long as you don't order the pebble-sized gulab jamuns - ā‚¹200 for four tiny jamuns and a tablespoon of rabri is more than too much. So, I'll take away one star, for now.
DIBYAJYOTI BASAK
Heavenly home feels like food for Bengali people, but bit overpriced. Especially after the renovation, they've increased the prices of quite many items, also decreased the quantity in comparison to the prices. I don't know the reason for their such a step, maybe they are trying to gain their renovation spendings from their customers. I started the review this way, not because I have any grudge against them, I am a big fan of their food, just that the last time I've been there, I am a little disappointed considering the above points.<br/><br/>Anyways, keeping that aside, coming to the food, best place in Chennai for authentic Bengali food. I have been here at least 4 times, I think, every time, with my Bengali friends, and we absolutely love it. Even my non-Bengali friends are a huge fan of the food here. Some items that we order always remain a constant, like, "Fish Fry", "Macher Chop" for starters, "Rice", "Muger Dal(is absolutely heaven)","Bhaja Basket", "Aloo Posto", "Potol Posto", "Aloo-Jhinge Posto", "Potoler Dolma", "Pabda Tel Jhol", "Murgir Jhol" "Pabda/Rui Shorshe" among others for Main Course, and finally, "Chutney" and "Mishti Doi" for dessert.<br/><br/>No complaints on the quality and the quantity of the food that they serve, they both are perfect, just that it'll be at the cost of a bigger hole in your pocket. But damn! How I love this place, and would love to be here time and again.<br/><br/>Overall, Food: 5/5, Ambience: 4.5/5, Value for money: 4/5

Absolutely wonderful place for some succulent North Indian and Bengali food. The staff is gracious and will answer all you queries regarding the menu. The lasooni chicken tikka and murgh badami tikka are top notch. Unfortunately we didn't take any photos because the food smelled so good, we gobbled it all up.<br/>Do give this place a try.

One word expression- Third class. Blot in the name of Bengali cuisine. Sweet Chicken curry with loads of cardamom aroma. Biryani was also a kind of joke. The Bayleaf
Ruchira
Really enjoyed the perfectly fried chops here - veg and fish, both. Great kasundi. Rolls were delicious too..excellent paratha and the filling was sans any chutney. Peaceful restaurant and good service
Shristi
Iā€™ve been here very frequently mainly for their rolls on the go which are amazing and the best.<br/>Their tikka rolls are a must try.<br/>Their rolls are pretty different and a little heavy when compared to the rest. Their chutney gives it a unique flavour to get you back there over and over again.

Good place serving some near to authentic bong food. we ordered a lot - potol pouri - not so happening. The kabiraji cutlet of fish was good. the cholar dal could have been little sweet. The kosha manghso was good.the luchis went good with kosha manghso and cholar dal. The chicken biriyani is very good. liked the rosogolla, gulab jamoon with ice cream and misti doi. All in all a good experience. service could have been a little faster.<br/>
Nidhima Agarwal
A perfect authentic Bengali restaurant. Food really tastes nice here. A family place exclusively serving bong dishes. They donā€™t serve any other cuisine. A go to place.

I became in a very good mood after visiting the place and having home like food in Chennai. Fish items were too yummy.. pure Bengali bliss the Bhetki Paturi was.. we ordered Mutton Kosha,Aloo Posto,Muger daal,Bhetki Paturi,Rosogolla. And our lunch on that day became fabulous..cooking quality just like Kolkata. Very much fond of this place.
Srinathiyer
A little taste if Calcutta or Kolkata right here in chennai.. after missing the lunches and the dinners in Delhi's Oh!Calcutta.. this is a quaint little place we found.. the review is late.. been here quite a lot of times.. won't talk about the food as the less said and more eaten here is the best šŸ˜‰ .. try it if you haven't šŸ˜‹

I ordered Achari Paneer Roll, but I received Corn Capsicum and cheese rollĀ  Ā šŸ˜• So can't believe that a Brand can serve like this. Food taste was okay (3.5/5).

The food never disappoints at The Bayleaf.Ā  The kathi rolls just went through a swift price rise post the implementation of GST but the other dishes don't inflate the monthly card statement<br/>The restaurant is on a crowded lane with bikes, cars and small groups of people lounging around the street food and chaat places in the vicinity. But parking can still be managed, except on weekends. Like seats inside the restaurant.<br/>KIshore Kumar sings in his native Bengali in the background and while the tunes are all familiar, the words are not. Tables are close-set with 'takhiyas', the round pillows easing up against your back when you sit on the single seats.<br/>Order anything you like. I'm told the kali mirch kabab is a big hit but even for vegetarians, the choice is extensive. You don't go to The Bayleaf for fancy food and atmosphere. You go there for nostalgia, conversations and authentic taste served by waiters who have aged with the restaurant. That's a reassuring aspect of the place. If they've kept their own people happy, you assume that they've done the same for their customers as well.Ā  Change is welcome when it is warranted but sometimes you need to indulge the familiar.<br/>The rotis are hot and when you tear pieces off, you blow on your fingers to cool them down - it's not the heat of the microwave. Dip in to dals, or raitas or mushroom and paneer gravies or the ones with fish and meat. One sure sign that the food is good? Tables go silent when the food arrives and everyone religiously tucks in.<br/>Don't miss out on the sweets - from the jalebis to the rossogollas. What's a Bengali meal, or any other meal without dessert as a finale? If you like gulab jamuns, they are not just soft, but lightly spongy. Somehow, that makes a difference to the mouthfeel. You don't have to wait for the weekend to visit. Mid-week is a good idea as well.

A complete bliss for a Bengali living in the city!! Located in a prime area and serves an awesome range of Bengali dishes. šŸ‘šŸ‘<br/>Already been here twice. We have tasted machher chop, fish kobiraji, mug daal, bhaja basket, pabda machh and mutton šŸ˜‹šŸ˜‹ each of them will take you to Bengal!!! After a long time we had potol er dolma and it was simply amazing..<br/>Price wise a bit costly but then worth paying if you are longing for proper Bengali food šŸ¤—<br/>Mishti doi was good but jaljeera wasn't that good. Their service is really prompt with a good ambience inside!!!<br/>Would like to visit again šŸ˜Š<br/>Rating:<br/>Food: 5/5<br/>Ambience: 4/5<br/>Price: 3/5<br/>Service: 5/5

Located jus behind Gangotree at Gopalapuram, this place is really good when it comes to their Wraps and Plattersā¤ļø Biryani was really tasty too. Worth the money. Nice place to go and eat.

Bayleaf is such a wonderful restaurant! The food is always great, the service is quick and the staff are friendly. Most importantly it's pocket firstly, you rarely get such good food in such great rates. Undoubtedly one of the best places in the city! So glad to see them maintaing their standard for years.
Sumit Sharma
Serves the best bengali dishes in the city. Lip smacking kati rolls. Kaju kishmish pulao and anda curry are pure bliss in every morsel. You name any dish and they simply rock your taste buds. Mishti doi , rosogulla and jalebi taste awesome. Arguably my favourite restaurant in Chennai. Period.

Bayleaf is such a great place to go, always. This review is based on multiple visits.<br/><br/>They make amazing bhaja and I definitely recommend the bhaja basket, which has baingan, potol and aloo bhaja. The aloo bhaja is just like chips, and isn't to my taste; potol and baingan are absolutely divine, though! This dish is well spiced, and best eaten when hot.<br/>The paneer paratha is excellent, as is the butter naan. The roti isn't exactly as soft as I'd like, but decent. Their dal makhani is also quite good, but nothing about it really stands out.<br/>My mother lived in Bengal for some time, and deems the cuisine authentically Bengali (judging by the bhaja and the potoler dolma). She is also a big fan of their stuffed parathas.<br/><br/>Can't wait to eat here again!
Saura Singha
Our order: Bhetki fry, tandoori masala prawns, chingri malai curry, mangsho kawsha, bhetki paturi, and steamed rice. The food was just too good, the bhetki items bordering on the lines of "heavenly"...mangsho kawsha was pure bliss for someone surviving on South Indian cuisine over the last couple of months, chingri malai curry was the best I have tasted anywhere!!<br/><br/>The interiors give you the feel of being in the drawing room of any erstwhile zamindar family with the traditional side-pillow, heavy coir drapes on the windows, and ceiling fans that can easily stake a claim to "heritage" status. However, modern day cutlery fuses in seamlessly in the setting...<br/><br/>Bayleaf GopalapuramĀ This holy shrine of Bengali cuisine is tucked away in a lane off Cathedral Road and opposite to Stella Maris College. It is slightly on the more expensive side but the quality of food makes it worthwhile. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for some authentic Kolkata food in Chennai.

Only true bong restaurant in Chennai best place for all Bengali folks here .lovely menu lovely service even desserts are very good lovely place to hangout with friends

Order: 1. Malai chicken Roll<br/>2. Chicken Cutlet <br/>3. Fish Kobiraji <br/>4. Potoler Dorma<br/>6. Luchi <br/>7. Mutton Kosha <br/>8. Misti Doi<br/><br/>Verdict: Fantastic! Would be an understatement. <br/>This is my 10th visit (no kidding) here. The bengali cuisine is pretty decent considering Bayleaf Gopalapuram is one of the limited places with a good ambience that serves Bengali cuisine. <br/>Coming to the food. The rolls are a tad disappointing. They are more like Kathi rolls than Kolkata street rolls. The chicken cutlet is good the fish Kobiraji is a little greasy but awesome so was the luchi and Dorma. The Show Stopper though had to be the Mutton Kosha OMG itā€™s like the stuff of the Dreams!! Finger licking good.

Had visited this place a while back with my family on a fine Sunday afternoon. As a welcome starter we were served channa chat which was amazing.Had tried Baingan bhaja, luchi puri, etc., Should visit this place again and the ambience and service is good

I loved my dining experience here. Our family loved the food and the ambiance. The food was very tasty .The chicken was tender and juicy and the seasoning was just perfectly balanced. The staff were very respectful. <br/>

3.5 actually.. On our recent holiday trip to Pondicherry/Chennai, we are putting up in a hotel in that area and looking for a semi formal North Indian restaurant. Zomato suggested Bayleaf and hence we landed here. Off the main road, slightly inside a lane, its has a comfortable, cosy setting, reminds you of old, plain vanilla setting eateries. Not much crowded, we were seated comfortably. Service was prompt, staff eager to help you choose. We had roll, dal makhani, rotis. Roll was good, dal was a bit letdown, but guess being down South that was ok. If around that area, its a good place for a quite meal which is reasonably priced.

1. Bengali<br/>2. Stuck amidst tamil delicacies<br/>3. Love fish fry<br/>4. Love your fish steamed, wrapped and mustard coated.<br/>5. Chutney over pickles<br/>6. Bengali songs and conversations.<br/>If any one if the above criteria matches, don't waste time, rush to Bayleaf.
Anirban Bhakta
I visited Bayleaf this Sunday afternoon with my family. The ambience was good, calm homestyle restaurant playing Bengali music in the background. The staffs were well dressed and well behaved. We ordered Betki fish fry, fish chop, egg chicken roll and rice with betki mustard curry. The fish chop barely had any fish in it but the fish fry was too good. So was the fish curry. Over all I felt content with the food.

This place is literally the saviour for bengalis in Chennai. There are in total 3 bengali resturants in this city n this ones the best. They have a hilsa festival every monsoon which is highly recommended.
Arijit Bhattacharjee
Well food is good if not great. However I must warn people of their governmental setup. You need to be super disciplined in terms of booking and timings.Even when I booked a table in advance with time slots communicated, a slight delay in placing order made a reminder land on my face from management that each table costs. That was quite impolite and uncouth for anyone who anticipates good experience and bit of pampering. I am not planning visit any soon I hope.
Sharav Venkatesh
Amazing food decent ambience, it's very favourite for me and my friend, we used to visit very frequently. Ultimate Bengali food. THALI MEALS priced in budget Fish Pathuri, prawn fry, Brinjal fry, and curries are too good. They make simple potato curry mixed with subzi a must try. The sweet dates cutney, Mango pachady, Egg curry, if you love Bengali food, then one should give a try. vRemember Thali is available only on week days. They also have egg roll, chappathi roll with chicken, mutton, veg, panneer... Small potato roll is tangy and too good.<br/><br/>
Sumit Kar
Chicken in the biryani smells bad. I guess they refrigerate the chicken for a long period of time. <br/>Never ever order Chocolate Sundae. I ordered Chocolate Sundae, it was just chocolate ice cream. When I asked if it is chocolate ice cream or sandae they took the bowl and put some chocolate sauce and 5-6 pieces of nuts. That's it. And the cashew kismish polao had very less quantity of cashew.

The Bayleaf is a Bengali's home away from home. Its menu comprises of some Bengali favourites that are always executed splendidly, courtesy of its very talented mentor, Mrs.Gupta.<br/><br/>What you should try when you go there:<br/>1.Luchi and chholar daal (A Bengali take on Puri, but better!)<br/>2.Bhaja basket (comprising of fried aubergines and "jhuri" french fries)<br/>3.Chicken cutlet (that is a sweet reminder of the same you get on the streets of Kolkata)<br/>4.Kosha maangsho (the most perfect mutton curry that you'll ever eat)<br/>5.Mishti Doi (perfectly set, it's a "mishti" way to end your meal)<br/><br/>I've literally grown up with The Bayleaf. I was 5 years old when my parents, then newly immigrated to Chennai from Kolkata, feeling home-sick, happened to discover the place while it was still situated in Poes Garden. It was still quite new back then. And now, even after 16 years, our relationship with The Bayleaf is as strong as ever.

Items I tried for dinner <br/>Bhetki fish Fry : authentic no adulteration<br/>Phoolkopir Dalna : bit sweet but nice less spicy <br/>Rui macher Jhal : Nice less spicy and homely including fresh fish and quantity also okay<br/>Pabda shorshe : less spicy and mustard taste.<br/>Tomato chutney : yummm<br/>Rating:<br/>Cooking 9/10<br/>Ambience 9.5/10<br/>Location 7/10<br/>Quantity 8/10<br/>Hospitality 10/10<br/>Price 9/10<br/>I conclude best bengali cuisine and stomach friendly and homely food you can get in Chennai<br/><br/>
Ajanta Anindita
Had a terrible experience trying to order in. I started the call by enquiring if they deliver at my location. They said yes and then spent 10 minutes taking my order. After 10 minutes, they tell me that they don't deliver. Usually, restaurants are upfront about where all they deliver.in this case, even with me initiating the question, they wasted my time.
Syed Sagheer
This place is past its prime. Stuck still in the early 2000s. Waiting staff is super chilled out. Nobody to take feed back. Its Bengali food is still good, albeit portions a bit small and expensive. Any Bengali fish item on their menu is worth a try. Avoid other stuff foreign to them like the "Hyderabadi Biryani" which is actually Chennai style biryani replete with brinjal curry. Bloody expensive as well! All in all, ok to try once for old times sake. Better to get their rolls in Bayleaf OTG.

Great place to drop in when you crave for Bengali cuisine. Easy to locate, the staff was welcoming. The food is amazing, and you get all food you would crave for right from chops, to maach and misthi.<br/>Do visit this place and put an end to your cravings.

The BayLeaf upholds its name. The taste is so perfectly traditional when it comes to Bengali dishes trust me, I've had more than my fair share of Bengali cuisine. <br/><br/>when it comes to North Indian dishes the taste may not be the best because it depends on your previous bouts with North Indian cuisine. I found it okay, not the worst I've had but still not at par with the taste. <br/><br/>The serving may not be at par but then it's the waiters. There are only a couple of waiters for like 10 tables. I don't know how they handle crowded days. Though when i went dining only 3 tables were occupied and not all at the same time, one of those 3 tables was mine. <br/><br/>They have 2 menus, 1 for Bengali & other for North Indian dishes. The waiters don't mention that, you got to figure it out on your own. It hampers with your order when you are placing it. <br/><br/>The ambience with the dim yellow-orange-ish lights and the moderate volume music is good. Keeps it lively during silences but doesn't do an over-kill. The music volume is such that any talking within the group is not disturbed and if there is a sudden silence, you can just listen to the songs. They played a mix of Hindi & Bengali that night. <br/><br/>All in All, a rating of 4/5 is apt.<br/>Reduce 1/2 for the waiters & 1/2 for the North Indian dishes.
Pratik Banerjee
It's delight for any any Bengali. Being away from home it's a delight and a paradise. Little bit costly on the pockets but the taste, ambiance worth visiting.
Subhasnigdha Samantaray
Had a delightful lunch. Can vconsider visiting more than once when in chennai. The ambience is good, qaint. Must Try Kasha mangsho, Macher jhol and kathi roll. At the end ordered Rasagolla but was not available. Then changed to Mishti Doi. It was cherry on top. Good that Rasagolla was unavailable :).<br/><br/>Note : I noticed More Bengalis are coming to this restaurant which is also a sign that the food is authentic.

One of the best places to indulge in Bengali cuisine. Absolutely loved it!<br/>The Mutton curry or Mangsher Jhol (hope i typed it right) is definitely worth trying. And of course, the fish in mustard curry shouldn't be missed.

Excellent food. Very well prepared with ideal quantity of spices and other ingredients. Lot of variety and efficient service. Bengali dishes are their speciality. Great value for money.

Ambience is quite good. Not a very costly place and the food is decent. The fish curry is cooked very well and the starters are also really good. Though lot of people prefer roll at the outlet... definitely one should check out items inside the restaurant... The wait time is slightly longer...!

Food is not upto the mark.chicken Kisha & dum aloo is the worst part. The only good dish was Bhapa Illish which costed Rs750. Went there with lots of expectations .Not a good place not VFM.1plate luchi,Bhaja basket,Illish bhapa, chicken Kisha, steam rice,Coke costed Rs 2142.00 .Gst rs327.00.

I loved having lunching at The Bayleaf. The mutton and the Bengali fish disheswere amazing. It went so well with both the naan and the rice. The service was really good too. The ambience was the plain family friendly types but that wasnā€™t such a big deal. Iā€™ll surely be visiting again

Went on Nabami...they had special menu for the occasion. It was a mouthwatering surprise when we get jhalmuri in a paper box(thonga)...that increased the expectations...we ordered fish cutlet as starters...it was very good...then we move on to main course, steam rice, alu bhaja, mug dal n Bhetki Paturi...just like home made thick dal with pieces of finely chopped veggies n paturi was simply d best we ever had outside home...fish simply melts in the mouth. Then 2 rajbhog...was a bit nosey considering my regular experience in Chennai...but turns out its stuffed with almond,pesta...simply wow. Service was pretty fast. But the food quality made me a fan of the resturant...simply wow experience

We ordered Bengali cuisines, all turned out to be perfect. Had the best kosha mangsho in Chennai. The serve quite fast, this is also a bingo-point for them. The only thing in which they need to improve is the ambience. Rather than having everything, it would be good if they make it an all-Bengali cuisine restaurant. Overall, "SUPERB" it was!

No words can describe a Bengali's emotion with food. And the saddest thing for one is when you leave your hometown and it's food behind. Best Bengali dine-in restaurant I have ever visited in South India.

It's a great place to have food.<br/>It reminds me of home, best Bengali Restaurant in Chennai!<br/>Food is excellent, and I'll be visiting the place very often. And the staff is very well behaved and helpful.<br/>I just loved the place, and have already recommended many to just check out the place.<br/>"Delicious" the only word that comes to my mind, whenever I think of the place.

Mode : swiggy<br/>Delivery : on time <br/>Order : butter roti , bathinda mutton<br/><br/>Positives :<br/>1) aspects of the curry <br/> A) Richness of the gravy<br/> B) Right spice level as indicated<br/> C) Tasted lovely<br/><br/>Negatives:<br/><br/>2) Aspects of the curry<br/>A) What I quite can't digest is the place of a 1 inch by almost 1inch Aloo piece in 2 inch height container for the curry. Practically half a big potatao in a curry costing Rs 430 , which probably might have not the case in dine -in experience. Thus the 3.0 rating, because that's bad value for money . Else I would have probably rated a 4.0.

For bangalis in Chennai ,you must try the food here.Quality,Quantity,Taste and Service--in all areas they are excellent.<br/>Just once I found that in the potol posto, the potol was a bit hard. But apart from that, this place remains my favourite bengali food place in Chennai!!

This is not must visit place, but once tasted its freq hit choice - feast to our taste buds. Biggest plus is the soft soft piece of chickens. So soft n juicy, melts in our tongue. Hats off Bay leaf for such quality chicks. Had bihari kebab which is mouth watering and yummy and enough spicy, its a best recepie here. <br/>Not big fan of tandoori chickens, but can taste ok. <br/>They can make better Spinach and cheese balls which will b good only in chat corners. <br/>Gajjar ka halwa with ice cream, a Good try and melting with the taste still now. <br/>After desserts all are done but quite a few places were we feel light and not heavy. <br/>Freq family hit place. <br/>

When u get a peice of potato in a chicken biryani! The very purpose is defeated! I made a home delivery in swiggy and this is how it was served! The taste was also below average! Totally not satisfied with my meal! Needs to improve a lot!

The best Bengali food I've had in a while. They offer thalis in vegetarian or with chicken or fish. The rolls are a must try. The ambience is good and so is the service
Dipanjan BHATTACHRJEE
nice food, good ambiance and home delivery is available too. But the prices of the bong items are overpriced. Ā Rolls centres are nearly non-existent in Chennai yet Rs.90 for a chicken Roll is a bit more.

Never go to this place on weekend or any occasion.Being a regular customer we went on 16th Apr 2017 which is a bengali new yr special items.<br/>1.fish kalia full of garam masala .not good<br/>2.pabda tel jhaal too watery and no salt no spice.<br/>3.chicken cutlet too strong and no taste in it.<br/>4.posto bora was full of coconut and hardly any postu and it was very hard we were in dilema whether its postu bora or macher dim er bora.and offcourse no salt.<br/>Only plain rice, mango sharbat, chicken roll and gulab jamun was good.<br/>We paid 1600 rs as bill but felt we didnt had anything. The food was not worthy, they should maintain a consistency.<br/>

Went for lunch with a colleague and the ambience was welcoming. Had tried only soup and biryani which were above the benchmark. Also ordered a gajar halwa which was good.

Insanely delicious.<br/>Ordered to office chicken egg roll and chilli Chicken double.<br/>The quantity was good.<br/>But did felt a bit less for the double compare to normal.<br/><br/>Really enjoyed.<br/>

Ppl who wants to taste the authentic Bengal food this is the right place to have.. ambience is okay and quite compact restaurant.. but this time we have been there for HILSA FEST they very selective menu of 7 combos.. we tried ilish barishali it's completely worst.. Very bad fishy smell I strictly won't recommend these to any one alsooo tht combo not at all worth for the cost.. it's 850 rs... Is too pricy.. small cup of fish head curry horrible... 2pcs of fish small quantity rice... That's it.. and tried tandoori prawns is excellent textured taste well... Egg Curry is awesome taste is finger licking... Tht only helped us to complete the white rice from tht combo with additional cost... Murgh behari is goood... They lost rating because of that combo only..

After a breezy evening at the marina beach reached this place for dinner with family. THE BAY LEAF is located opposite to stella maris college and i have actually been here during college days jus to have their katti rolls which are pretty amazing but dont expect the same tasty food inside the restaurantšŸ˜<br/><br/>To begin with, the ambience is pretty good and calm with some good music played in the background that is soothing!!<br/><br/>FOOD- 3/5<br/>Tomato shorba from the soup section which pretty much looked and tasted like tomato rasam. I have had tomato shorba earlier but i have never seen it so watery. It was served hot though!!<br/><br/>The Barbecued mango chicken from the starters was very good. The chicken was Tender and soft with tangy flavour of mango was served with mint chutney which is a must try!!<br/><br/>For the main course had Nan and chicken tikka masala which was tasty. The chicken again was soft, juicy and Tender and the masala also tasted goodšŸ˜€but the chicken biriyani was a disappointment šŸ¤„šŸ¤„ the chicken was undercooked, even the rice was not cooked well!! The biriyani did not have the usual flavours it has to have and their was nothing special about the biriyani which was priced at 310 rupees!<br/><br/>SERVICE- 2/5<br/>Very poor service, with minimum tables occupied the waiters were not able to serve us properly. Everytime we had to call for the waiters to serve us and on top of this they delayed producing our bill by 15 mins which was quite a long time ..<br/><br/>So, overall a moderate experience , consider visiting only once!!<br/>

By far, the best place to have authentic Bengali food in Chennai. Being a Bengali in Chennai for almost the past four years, eating out and exploring places for good food, especially Bengali food has always been a priority. Though there are numerous budget restaurants serving Bengali food at pocket friendly prices, there is something about Bayleaf that makes it stand out amongst the rest.<br/>Located at Gopalapuram, Bayleaf has a fabulous ambience. The decor gives the feel of some old Zamindar house. The aramkedara feel and the lampshades were a major attraction.Ā <br/>The staff were absolutely courteous and a delight to talk to and discuss before placing orders.<br/><br/>We started off with chicken soup. The aroma was delectable. The consistency was just perfect. A clear soup with huge chunks of well cooked and moderately spiced chicken just made our day. And as the saying goes, morning shows the day, the brilliance of the chicken soup assured us of the wonderful treat that the next few dishes were to offer.<br/><br/>Next, we ordered Machher chop and Prawn Pakoda. The Machher chop was so delicious.. it reminded me of the ones that one of my grandmothers used to make. A bite into the chop and I was transported magically to my schooldays when this used to be a regular treat from granny's place :) The prawn pakodas were excellent, not at all soggy; in fact pretty crisp and perfect.Ā <br/><br/>A Bengali and her love for luchis is perhaps an epic saga, worth a Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie. True to our love, we ordered luchis to go with Machh Potoler Dolma. Potoler Dolma is yet another nostalgic dish. I have been pretty lucky I must say, to have been doted upon by grandmothers and mother and aunts who have stuffed me with edible goodies all through my life. Potoler Dolma is again one such dish that reminds me of my Dinda. Filling the very favourite, tender green paudwals with chingri machh bata or rui machh Ā (in this case, it was prawns) and spices; frying them in such a way that the green colour is retained and then cooking up a curry.. heavenly!Ā <br/><br/>By this time we were almost full, yet a visit to a fine dining Bengali restaurant and leaving without biting a morsel of rice and fish is sacrilegious. Thus, a plate of steamed Basmati rice and Shorshe Bhetki were ordered to satiate our taste buds. My my! Thank God we did it. The not so thick, mustard gravy and the pieces of fried Bhetki were sheer bliss. Add to it, the extra long green chillis and the tummy was as happy as we could ever imagine.<br/><br/>Dessert is again another thing that Bengalis can never compromise upon. In fact, we are as much attracted to sweets as ants are to sugar. And when the menu offered Mishti Doi and Rosogollas, it was like a match made in heaven.Ā <br/><br/>The total bill came up to around Rs. 2000 for the three of us. We left the restaurant as a happy bunch of souls with filled tummies.<br/><br/>Well, there is one thing that I'd like to add here. Not a single dollop of extra oil or spice was present in any dish. Each and every dish had such a homely feel to it.<br/><br/>Ratings:<br/>Ambience: 4.5/5<br/>Quality: 4.5/5<br/>Quantity: 4.5/5<br/>Cost: 4/5<br/>Service: 4.5/5<br/><br/>P.S. Looking forward to more visits, especially to try out the Kathi Rolls.

Never been to this restaurant, but have had the kathi rolls outside this place . this area is too crowded with kathi rolls joints and one among is bay leaf .<br/><br/>They have a nice variety of kathi rolls and they tate very good and good VFM . the amount of meat quantity they stuff inside is also good .<br/><br/>Food :4<br/>Ambience : roadside side<br/>Service : 3.5<br/>VFM : 4

Searched for best Bengali cuisine restaurant in chennai, and I found this. Having to rely on the rating, we went ahead with the order billing ā‚¹1100.<br/>Absolutely horrendous quality of fish. Chicken kasha was considerably okay. But the rest of the food was totally not edible.<br/>Will Not Recommend !!!

Date: 10/2/2017<br/>Price: ā‚¹842<br/>Description: Finally found some good bengali food in chennai... Decor and ambience is good... Quality of the food was good and in authentic bengali style.. We ordered 2 veg thali along with 1 pate of luchi and 1 mutton kosha.. just to add, not fully satisfied with the quantity... And one more thing.. had the best rasogolla of chennai here..

Bringing the Bengali Kolkata flavour to Chennai. Fantastic ambience and fantastic service. We ordered all sorts of dishes and everything turned out to be good. Zero complaints on any dishes. Deliciously delicious. We liked the Fish (being a Kolkata flavoured restaurant we had to) and the mutton was superbly cooked. And the desserts. Oh Man! Will come back again just for the desserts. We had Halwa and Rasagola. The best Rasogala you can eat in Chennai. Period. Overall a worthy five star rating experience.

I will be here again and again only for the tandoori chicken. Palmshore and bay leaf are the only restaurants I have tasted till now which gives the juicy and tasty and fresh chicken. <br/><br/>I loved the starter, this is little far from my work place, have been here only when i could, but still it's so good. Apart from the tandoori chicken, romali roti and Gravies tasted good. But I ate only chicken. And I wi come every now and then when I could.<br/><br/>4/5 for service, you will enjoy the restaurant.

So its a Monday night and my friend and I were heading back home after a tiring day at work. We passed The Bayleaf and decided to try this place for dinner. I have heard about the place and mainly about their authentic Bengali food.To begin with, the ambience is pretty good. The lighting is a bit dim but not so dim that we stumble on to stuff. Its pleasant. There light Bengli music in the background which is soothing. The place was almost empty when we went in. Even though it was a Bengali restaurant, we felt like ordering something else. I'd kill for paneer and so would my friend. So we ordered a plate of paneer tikka, a plate of chilli cheese french fries, one dhabewali dal, one palak paneer, two butter rotis and a plate of steamed rice.I'd go ahead and say that the food tasted good but not so good that you'd drool everytime you thought of this place. The dal and palak paneer were good but lacked the flavour that one would expect from these dishes. The butter roti was really good and the rice, well....its rice, what could go wrong with rice, right?! For dessert, we had gajjar halwa with icecream. Now that, was delicious! The staff was amazing. They were very attentive and would be right beside our table as soon as our plates were empty to serve the next dish. The pricing is a bit too high. But its worth a shot. Overall, considering the ambience, service and food I'd rate this place somewhere between 3.5 and 4.

Hi. I have had lunches with family and friends at this place quite often. While the food and ambience is good, I had a very bad experience in terms of customer service today. After having our lunch I paid the bill with cash and left the restaurant. The waiter comes back running after us and tell us that the 100/- rupee note that we gave is torn and that it will not be accepted. Me and my friend were like ...what the hell.....at a time when getting money is a big thing and lot of places are going out of the way to help people...here is a place which is tracking down customers to get a note changed....totally no customer service...lost all respect for this place..

Overall a good food but little expensive menu. Bengali dishes are awesome and great place for food lovers to try. There is a regular North India menu too.

Have both dined in and ordered home. Great place for Bengalis and Oriyas to dine out and in general for anyone who loves good food.Ā <br/><br/>This joint offers up delicious Kathi Rolls. Veggies should try the Achari Paneer and Non Veg Lovers are recommended the Lasuni Chicken Roll or the Chicken Tikka with Egg Roll. You have a wheat option for the roll too.<br/><br/>What I love here:<br/><br/>Veg - Rice or Luchis with Cholar Dal, Posto and Bhaja Basket<br/>Non Veg - Rice or Luchis with Mutton Kwasha or Chicken Kwasha (reminds me of home).Ā <br/><br/>I haven't tried the Biryanis or the usual dishes like Kadai Paneer. I don't think I will get around to that. I am stuck on the Kathi Rolls, the Luchis and the Mutton Kwasha :)<br/><br/>You won't get these flavours in many places in Chennai!!<br/><br/>Food 4.5, Service and Seating 3.5

Bayleaf used to be one of my frequently visited restaurants. But two days back It was a disaster. The valet parking was not available, so I had to 'get up' twice while having lunch to move my car. Sadly, others had to do the same. Additionally, the restroom was out of service that day. Had to use a dilapidated one frequented by the employees. <br/><br/>It was a terrible experience. The rolls were good. Its better to take them on the go rather than being seated at the restaurant.

The beat place to try Bengali cuisine in Chennai. Prices are a little on the higher side. But the taste makes up for it. Try all the dishes here. You will not be disappointed. They need to provide parking though. It is too congested an area to find parking especially for cars.
Vishak Vishwanathan
Slow service ,mixed with good food. The Bayleaf is always been well renowned for its tasty Bengali food. Buy the service is very slow here. Maybe it could have been my mistake for not ordering everything at once, and ordering as I ate..... But I was stuck for close to 15 mins mid meal with dry rice in our plates and no curry to complement it. If it wasn't for the long wait for every dish I might Have enjoyed the meal.

For Bong it's a good place to go for some dishes like patoler dolma n other Bengali cuisine. But I didn't like bhetki paturi as it was not cooked in an authentic way - just steamed fish with mustard sauce!

Excellent. Authentic Bengali food down south. Best place to grab a piece of home and that too on a budget. Better than all the chain restaurant rubbish. Love the rolls in the grab and go counter as well. Do try the kebabs from their north Indian section and the mocktails. Looking forward to more outlets

It's one of the rare Bengali joints in town and is located near stella Maris college. <br/><br/>The quality of Bengali food, the ambience and the service are good.<br/><br/>A must visit place

Good Bengali cuisine.. We had aloo posto ( potato in poppy seeds) and rui macher kalia (Rohu fish curry).. Give it a try.. Bill was just around 500..

The restaurant is quite easy to locate on the Gopalapuram 6th Street near Gangotree Sweets. The ambience was good with a mix of Bengali and Bollywood songs playing in the background. We ordered Lucchi,Ā Cholar Dal, Alu Posto, Doi Fulkopi, BetkiĀ Paturi, SorsheĀ Ilish, Bhapa Chingri, Mutton Kosha, Chicken Mango Barbeque, Fish Chop, Chicken Roll,Ā Saundhe Alu Roll, Rosogolla and Aam Pora Sherbet. The vegetarian items mainly the alu posto and cauliflower was not up to the mark at all. Rolls were quite good, The non-vegetarian items although good in taste didn't match what we get in Kolkata. Also the quantity we got against the price paid was not quite generous. Rice servings were very low in quantity also. The rosogollaĀ was not that fresh and the aam pora sherbet lacked the tangy spark it should've had. Overall it was not a value for money experience although for a taste changer people who hails from other parts of India than Bengal can try this restaurant.

Nice place with good ambiance. I tried the achari paneer tikka roll with a wheat base rather than a maida base and it was good. The paneer was soft and since we had ordered the double, it was filling as well. Then i tried the tandoori roti with alu gobi. Most restaurants might fill it up with loads of potato, but this had equal portions of both and the spices were good as well. The personal favorite in a bengali meal for me is the dessert. Had to try the rosagulla and it was good, except that i expected them to be bigger typical of how you get in kolkatta. We also ordered jalebi which isn't there on the menu and that was quite good as well. They top the jalebi with crushed cashew and the shape of the jalebi is also unusual.
Surit Nandy
Bored of those stereotypical dishes, want to try some authentic Bengali cuisines ,then this place is a must, the starters(fish kabiraji) are really good, but needs a lot of improvement on the sorse(mustard) dishes of fish, actually a lot of kasundi(mustard sauce) was used instead of mustard, luchi(poori) and khawasha mangsho is a great combo, and the those soft tender hot Rosogolla(s) will definitely give you a shot of sweetness, overall after a hectic day , one can easily fulfill his stomach at a reasonable price

The Bayleaf in chennai is an average place where you would find quality bengali food.<br/>Certainly one would say so after having in places like oh calcutta, bhojohori manna, aaheli <br/>But at its level a decent place fair price. Was disappointed that they dint had misti doi but rest of the food was average. Try any fish kalia it is decent out of the lot

Fantastic Hygenic and Yummy Non veg rolls. I loved the chicken tikka roll, the chicken felt very tender and tasty. I preferred the double roll which is pretty filling and worth the price.
