Review Petuk - Chennai (Madras)

Balaji Natarajan
Absolutely delicious !! The kasha gravies would look oily.. but every drop of it sings the flavour of that chicken or mutton or prawns. We ordered devil eggs, chicken biryani, mutton kasha, malai prawns & roti. Every recipe was unique ... n carried the taste of non veg very well. Mutton was juicy n tender .. chicken biryani & the gentle rose essence in it, with a boiled n roasted potato reminded me of the one I had from Arsalan in Kolkata. And they've used the prawns whole.. no removing of head or the deveining .. May be that's what's giving the rich flavour to the gravy. Absolute Bengali cuisine ... Give it a try.. Definitely you wouldn't regret!

The food here is good in taste. They don't serve the same menu every day 😃 which is quite good . Every day the menu changes . It is located inside a street so not easily visible from the road. Now talking about the food I love their veg and chicken thali and the fish. Must try Bengali cuisine here. The ambiance is good not that fancy.

This place has the essence of Bengali dishes. The hope of every homesick Bengalis and their friends. They add varied items every day in their menu as per the availability of fresh ingredients. They can customize the food as per your taste. First-timers, you can eat everything. You'll love this place for sure. They need to change their furniture and some modification is required. Pocket-friendly too.

Very cordial staff, tasty food. Reasonable pricing. Egg devil is the best. Ample four wheeler parking available in front of shop . Bring your bong family in car.
Aniruddh Majumder
A bit costly for the quantity and quality, but no better options available out there in Chennai. A must visit for Bengali guys out there. The menu is different on each day so ask out if you are going from far away/ or for a particular dish.
Sushovan Saha
Awesome Bengali cuisine in Chennai. You canhave varieties of fish items, Mutton and specially you will enjoy the taste of Kolkata biriyani. Price is also reasonable.
Priyanka
Definitely a place try for Bengali cuisine. It's not a set menu so it keeps you coming back for their food.

Wow ..just one word wow ..if u like bangoli food 😋without much oil n masala ..means if u r a homemade food lover. Must try here chicken kasa, small fish with sorsho bata , n a long list ..even mainly its not so much expensive. But don't expect to go for a special day celebration ..its a very neat n small restaurant with good tasty food ...good to go in day to day life ..for lunch or dinner . so must try this place ..n enjoy 😋
Bikash Deb
This is a place for the bengali food lovers...awesome food which will lighten up ur mood but will add extra pounds...bhetki and Malai chingri is must try...the ambience is not classy or posh but neat and clean...service is good ..ek baar try karna toh banya hai

Best place for Bengali food in chennai. Owner shuvologno is so polite, generous and helpful.
Agnimitra Das
The behaviour of the staff is appalling and rude. They treat customers as if we are refugees waiting for food. Just because the food quality is good they are full of arrogance.
Tuhin Chakrabarty
Not worth the hype .Half the items on menu are unavailable .Plus its a mini furnace .Misplaced fans .Unhygenic bottles .Laid back waiters .Left without ordering .
Shoubhik Kundu
I just loved it...in a city where i have to eat only sambar, vada idly dosa and curd rice....having lunch here is such a relief...:)
Ashima
At reasonable price it's the choiceable platter of Bengali delicacy. No compromise with the quality or quantity.
Sourim Das
That's a small bengali restaurant . You can't expect Hyatt hospitality. They are serving you katla, telapia, paturi, echor chingri , shukto in the land of idli dosa. That too of great quality & quantity. Just eat and leave. What do you want? To feed you, then cuddle and sing you to sleep?? And I saw a person telling it's a hot furnace .. that's y it's price is so low. You might want to pay more, not all.
Sohini Chakrabarti
Loved the food....will wait for your chain opening at Mumbai best wishes

Authentic Bengali Food. Had Kosha Mangsho, rice and devil. The chatni is good and kichuri is like the Durga Puja khichuri. Divine food!!!!!!

Bengali cuisine has a charm of it's own which comes from it's definitive use of mustard and other spices. Being a Bengali living outside Bengal we often crave for the taste of our homeland. This is where Petuk comes in and saves the day. Located in Chennai, this bengali restaurant has been serving authentic bengali food at ridiculously affordable prices for decades. Enter the restaurant and you will find yourself in a mini Bengal outside Bengal. This particular day we ordered dhokar dalna, aloo posto, aam dal, jhuri aloo bhaja, chingri machher malai curry and pabda machher jhol. Each and every of the dishes from their menu will take you to the seventh heaven if you are missing your home cooked food in a far away place.
Sutanwee Pandit
Being a Bengali and staying all alone in Chennai is not easy. And getting Bengali homestyle cooked food was like being in dreamland.. The quantity of food is decent compared to the price and the quality is also good.. My parents paid a visit to me and wen I ordered food from here they also loved it
Umesh Mohanty
These guys have 3 outlets in Chennai. Have been to all of them. The Perungudi one is, predominantly, a take away place. It does have seating for 4-6 people. The Chennai heat doesn’t make it a comfortable dine-in place. I prefer takeaway only. The 2 people staff is here is very polite and will make adjustments to suit your taste. The things to try out here are, in the following order, rolls, chicken pakoda, veg cutlet (chop) and chicken bhuna (Kosha in Bengali). Strongly recommend for takeaways.

This place is like my second home.a bong in chennai must visit Petuk.i tried their biriyani it's awesome.i tried their khichudi on saraswati Puja it's heavenly.koraishutir kochuri and mutton kosha is excellent.u can try machher kalia egg devil vegetable chop.extremely well priced and great quantity and service.

Missing homemade Bengali food in Chennai? This is the perfect place to go with your family or friends and have good Bengali food at a very low budget. Ambience is fine, food can be a little better but when there are so less options, you go with everything you have. Do visit.

Finally #PETUK , Chennai - The most authentic #Bengali_Restaurant in town (reviewed by Bangla people)

1) #Fish_PATLURI (Bhetki Fish) ✔️ 2) #Egg_DEVIL ✔️ 3) #Prawn_MALAI_Curry ✔️ 4) #Mutton_KASHA ✔️ 5) #Katla_Fish_KALIA ✔️ 6) #Aloo_Chicken_Biryani

The menu changes on a daily basis.

The food is really awesome specially if you want classic Bengali dishes. Its a must place to go if you are in Chennai and miss bengali food.
Satarupa Chanda
Favourite gateway whenever i crave barir khabar.. Delicious and heartwarming, you can get authentic bengali taste in all the dishes.. And added bonus is there is no fixed menu.. Although majority dishes are same, still there will be some surprise element everytime..
Sumana Ghosh
Perfect place for Bengali food in Chennai.Love the biryani . It is as same as the Kolkata style biryani with a piece of Aloo and meat and egg and no raita.Fish preparations are also good.
Anurag Chakrabortty
If you are a Bong and searching for authentic Bengali food in Chennai , try this place. They charge for each item but given the taste , the price is worth it. Had been there 2 times when I was in Chennai. Tried the Parshe Jhol which was cheap and tasted really well. Had Maacher Matha diye Dal , Alubhaja, Papad, Payesh which were too good. Try this Perungudi branch as they have another branch in Navalur. Courteous staff as well.

Petuk Restaurant is a proper Bengali authentic food restaurant.
Never miss Machar Paturi with rice when you are here, it's the best Bengali dish you can ever have.
Prawn malai curry is delicious.
Fish and chicken is good to have.
I didn't like the Chicken Biriyani, as I found the chicken wasn't properly cooked.
Overall a nice place for great taste with a very reasonable price.
Paul
Very poor food taste is very bad not able to eat i just throwed it in the dustbin and the quantity is very less for the price i am totally disappointed
Ankit
The food was good but the service was just too bad. People serving were not clear what all items are available and what not. While ordering an item 2nd time they were saying that the item is not available (there was no other people in the restaurant nor i say any online delievery). So in case you like anything you should order all at once or else they will not serve you. Worst exp ever. Am born n bought up in Kolkata and i have never heard of any meal without aloo bhaja but this place has that weird combo as well. My first and last visit to this place. Happy with #bff

Petuk - Descent Bengali cuisine restaurant near HCL perungudi office. When I went to this place recently in (June end 2018) I saw a new petuk renovated with nice ambience and they installed AC also which gives more comfort during summer. Food wise still they continue the same taste like home food. The beauty of this restaurant is budget meal with authentic Bengali food. Fish cuisines are awesome. Pathody(steamed fish) a must try one. Staffs are very polite..... Only issue that u may find like slow service, and seating issues during weekends....if you are planning to go there then go bit early like 12.30 PM for lunch
Gokul
veery bad they cheated ordered chicken gravy but only potato in that

I think this is the only good Bengali restaurant on OMR. Have visit many times and have tried their thali, fish paturi, mutton kasha, etc. Food quality is good and its value for money. Only drawback which I could feel is - they don't have AC. And sometimes it gets really uncomfortable while eating.

This is a jewel, hidden in a small lane, serving the most authentic Bengali food. Everytime I dine here, I start missing home and the taste of the food is nostalgia inducing.
I usually try their fish delicacies of the day. The best thing is that they change their menu everyday, so you get different varieties each day. This place retains the local flavor of Bengali food, and is reasonably priced. They have also renovated their seating area, which works well because now one can enjoy their dining experience more. In terms of food, this is my home away from home. More power and love to petuk!! 💖

small chicken piece

taste was good, but it's a bit overpriced.they gave only one medium sized piece and this fish is not that much costly.

Quantity was very less in the item ordered.

Amazing Bengali food! (To Bangalis)At pocket friendly prices, you can taste the food of your homeland and dig into the lovely bhaat-dal-alu bhaja-maach combo. I did the same.
Umesh Mohanty
Planned a lunch at petuk, but could not locate it. Hence, ended up ordering home delivery. Can’t comment on the ambience or service. Food delivery was prompt. Food taste and quality was outstanding. Ordered the frequently ordered chicken Kosha. The chicken was soft and juicy and complemented the gravy, thick and done well. Will visit for in person dining. Highly recommended if you prefer Bangla food.
Kamesh Warran
Homemade authentic Bengali food taste.
Ambience is chill with AC and yellow deco.
Ordered fish cutlet, katla kalia(fish),roti and chicken kasha...all were good but not extraordinary.
Fishes are their speciality.
Overall a different cuisine to try out in Chennai.

Absolutely amazing!

Delicious Bengali Food experienced in remote chennai. will remember forever.Thank you.

Being a bengali was craving for some good bengali cuisine in chennai.. Heard of petuk and went asap.. I wont complain about the chef he tried his best to bring some taste into all those stale fishes.. His recipes were perfect.. But the quality of food was a disgrace to bengali cooking.. Stale fish.. Paturi didint had bhetki but had some cheap substitute but the cost was 150 per piece of paturi. Parshe was stale and hard.. Chicken was only flawless. Everything was wayy too overpriced as compared to the quality of food. Not visiting again.

Another place to visit when you're a bengali and are in Chennai. You must try 'Polao with chicken gravy'. They also serve varieties of fish curry.

Pure tradition Bengali cuisine.... good in taste, rich in nature! Quiet often they parcel wrong menu, especially shorter duration to closer time in night.

Petuk one of the most favorite and affordable hangout for bengali foodies.
This shop recently had a makeover.
Food is really good but you had to really reach as early as possible for dinner or you end up missing the best items.
We reached at 8 pm on a Sunday evening and for choice we were left with Egg devil, Fish Finger (last plate), Chicken kosha (last 2 plates), Katla kalia (last plate) Cabbage and Chatni.
Honest reviews
Egg devil : not even close to kolkata dimer devil
Fish finget: okay but they should provide bhetki
Cabbage: perfect, must try
Katla kalia: spicy, bit sweet, but tastes good (1 pc)
Chicken kosha: bit sweet but nice (3 pc n 1 aloo)
Chatni: raw mango chatni, must try
Other rating
Ambience 3/5 (considering price it's nice)
Hospitality 4/5
Food 4/5
Hygiene 4.5/5
Quantity 3/5

I would like to suggest Petuk to stock up more food, we been disappointed with the menu twice.

I have been a regular customer of this place for over 3 years..roughly..and I am so in love with their food. I have introduced lots of my Bengali/non-Bengali friends to this place too.

I personally feel, this place serves good food which has a homely touch. Even though it is not a proper restaurant, I like and appreciate the fact that they keep the place clean..which is very important for a food industry.

My feedback would be that they continue doing the same...serving delicious and clean/hygenic food and stay affordable and pocket friendly.

Chicken kosha is great! Must try
Manash Deep Dey
No beguni
Abhiroop Mitra
Bit priced but that might be due to OMR. Paturi doesn’t taste good with Basa fish, need to have Bhetki. Biriyani was good but curries too much oily

Spent the last year of my college only eating at this place. Amazing budget friendly place, serves food like home. Amazing Bengali food, must check it out.
Shamik Sengupta
chilli chicken tasted like a sweet dish
Kunal Gupta
Absolutely brilliant Bengali food. Maybe the very best in Chennai. Foodgasm for a Bengali . Go for the simple bhaat and mangsher jhol. Fish fry is a good treat as well. A very modest place. The only negative being no air conditioning. The taste more than makes up for it.
Tripti Korey khelam.

check the order first. if someone order 4 chapatis, deliver 4 not 1. and kindly pickup that bloody phone of yours

The place to go for a casual, weekend lunch. The only catch is that, Bengali cuisine is an acquired taste. The seafood here, is really good. Give it a try!

Petuk is not a good option when you are in a budget..it is overly priced, the food is not even worth so much, it doesn't even tastes soo good, very less options ..only one dish I like here is mango chutney.. otherwise not advisable ..

One of the best Chicken Khosa I tasted... I thought of exploring some new restaurants near my office place - HCL and so decided to take my colleagues along with me to this place 😀
A decent place for a pocket friendly dinner place . Quick service and moreover the mouth watering aroma of the dishes. Highly recommended.

mutton pieces wasn't there .
n all the taste was sweet..

The alu posto was nothing close to its name. The mutton pieces were only one and fat and it smelt weird. Horrible experience

Finding a place in chennai that serve authetic bengali dishes is rare. This is a place all bong food lovers must visit.
The food is a 4.5/5.
We had 3 starter, 3 main course dishes, luchi and bhaat all under 1000 bucks. It is very pocket friendly.
The fishes are fresh and tastes like home. The mutton usually gets over by evening because it's worth having. They have very less variety of dessert and I personally didn't like the malpua in dessert.

The staffs are quiet friendly and understanding.

The ambiance is a 2/5.
The lighting is not proper, there is no AC and there are mosquitos as well. The tables and glasses doesn't seem clean but are unnoticed infront of good food.

Wanna try Bengali taste in chennai? Please come to petuk. I have been here twice. Food taste was awsome, I never found any other Bengali cuisine restaurant in Chennai except Petuk and Bengali fun foods. Petuk is better. I hope you will enjoy the food too.

We visited on Thursday to this restaurant at 9:00pm. The ambiance was good service was ok, the most important part was food. I personally liked very much because I am a Bengali. Katla Kalia was awesome, chicken kosha was out of world, only I was disappointed because of not availability of prawn, I highly expected prawns but it was not there on then particular day. Still that’s fine I was fully satisfied with food and service.. thanks petuk I will definitely visit again and again.....

Petuk seems to me a typical restraunt (hotel for indian)....donot expect 5 star ambience or highly garnished dishes.........
But we can go there as a regular food joint have some bengali cusine......
More than that the cost is too descent here.....
2 starter, 1 mutton kasha, 4 baguni costs us around 340 9nly.......happy
Libu Babu
A best place to taste Bengali food in OMR. You get typical Bengali dishes in their own taste, flavor and essence and you can clearly see the crowd who loves the food . For others, not a place to visit often as the food is mostly on the sweeter side. We had a Bengali friend with us who suggested us the best dishes here and I simply loved the fish (wrapped in leaf and with some chutney). Ambience and facilities are just normal and could have improved.
Ambience: 3/5
Quality: 3.5/5
Quantity:3.5/5
Service: 3.5/5

Food was very spicy. I mentioned that it should be made less spicy.

Us Bengalis, we have a certain itch for the perfection in food, even when we know it is not our homeland and that perfection in someplace else is an utopian hope. I recently moved to Chennai and was yearning for some food that can resemble food back home like fraternal twins. And from many bengalis in Chennai, I came across the name of Petuk. A Sunday afternoon found me there and we ordered everything that was on the menu of the day: Shukto, Kachkolar Kofta, Machher dim er Bora (friend fish-eggs), Chingrir Malaikari (Prawn with Coconut Milk and Cream sauce), beguni(batter fried aubergine), chutney, and mishti.
The day I lunched at Petuk still remains the best food day in my Chennai Diaries.
Indrajit Banerjee
Good food and authentic bengali dishes! The biriyani is awesome. I mostly order biriyani or roti and egg torka! Whenever I crave for bengali food, I order from this place
Sourav Sinha
Good place to have Bengali food in Chennai. Good ambience and the food tastes like homemade Bengali food. Value for money just for bringing quality Bengali food to the residents of South Chennai.
Subrata
I find this restaurant as my first Bengali food restaurant in Chennai. I visited the place with great expectation of taste of Bengal. It is very near from my work place, so I thought I could visit often.

The food they served are not upto the mark in terms of authenticity of Bengali food. It’s basically more south Bengal version of food. They predominantly use red chili powder and sugar along with mustered oil (in excessive quantity) which is not at all good for your stomach and health. Taste of food is very monotonous and highly predictable. My request to management to think over the points I raised in my review. I would be really happy if they try to improve the food quality.

Best place to have Bengali food in Chennai.
Small, but neat and clean.
Great food, low cost.
Must try Fish cutlets and Katla kaliya (fish curry).

Its good (including the dining space).. a bengali staying away from home always seeks bangali food, so in chennai you can easily go and have bengali dishes..

So, new to the city and a bong. Looked out for some bong food and came across this place. Visited it. Place is located in a small lane, can be easily located by Google Maps. Good setup. Good in the menu is basic, nothing fancy but requirements are fulfilled. I’d ordered for Aloo Posto and roti. Aloo posto was for ₹60 and bowl and the portion is sufficient for 2 people is ordering something else or else good enough for one (it comes in a bowl similar to a desert bowl) rotis were freshly made and hot. Still wasn’t full, so went ahead and asked for Mutton Dak Bungalow, this was basically a thick mutton curry served with a boiled egg. The flavour, taste and aroma was something out of this world. Had this with rice. However, they could have been a little more generous on the pieces of mutton. Since there wears rice left on my plate, went and ordered a katla fish curry. This was something different. Really tasty curry. Typical bong style. Great taste. It’s a real large size piece of fish that is served with curry on a plate. Fish was tender and fresh. Great place to go for a Sunday meal with friends or family. Will be heading there soon for my weekly dose of bong food. PS - sufficient car parking and Bike parking available. Also debit and credit cards accepted. Good food and good service.

If u want to have a taste of bengali cusine in chennai u can definitely visit this place.
They have a veriety of bengali dishes.
The prices are on a higher note.
On weekends u may find it difficult to get a table for u since the seating area is not a large one.
All together a nice place to dine.
Venkatrao G
Came with lot of expectations. Total let down! Don't know whether Bengali food is like this or not but the items we ordered were very sweet, couldn't eat. Better ask before ordering whether it's sweet or spicy

There are very few places in Chennai which serve Bengali food..and when I came across this place with good reviews and it's pocket friendly 💸prices I immediately bookmarked it..!

I've always liked Bengali sweets and a huge fan of them.So I wanted to visit this place ASAP.

Took help of Google maps and reached this place..it's located in a side road and no problem with the parking. The place was quite spacious but the lighting was too dim and the ambience was bad..!

So I opted for a takeaway..

💫 Fish Fingers - a perfect starter, 3 pieces of cylindrical crispy fingers with a decent stuffing of fish it in..worth the 80 bucks they charge.

💫. Fish Paturi - It would be a crime not ordering a 🐟 dish. This dish comes wrapped in a banana leaf..mustard coated fish steamed in a banana leaf. The fish was soft, but it had too mustardy and had that pungent taste of mustard. Personally I didn't like this dish

💫 Prawn malaikari- prawn being my favourite..I ordered this gravy.. it had a huge 🦐prawn in a sweet gravy.

I haven't had Bengali food before so it won't be right commenting on the authenticity of the food here.. the fish fingers was the only dish I liked..😅

I ended up paying Rs 400+ 💰 for the above items..this place is bit hyped according my opinion. Recommended for one time visit.

Best place to have bengali home food, everything hea is awesome....ambience service ol gives to bengal home feel
Rice ,luchi, fish , alu postu ol dishes are just awesome and price is also very resonable

Though you have few bengali restaurants at chennai you just can't start deteriorating your food quality and quantity every time
have been a regular visitor this restaurant but vety upset with the food and service particularly in petuk kandanchavdi as they have been deteriorating with decreasing the quantity of foods
common you can always charge higher for better food and quantity
even on the soft drinks you people have just started to earn with your biz tricks
once a customer doesn't remain a customer until you keep consistency
Amit Singh
Not an authentic Bengali good. They add loads of sugar in the dishes. I have grown up in Bengal so I very well know the taste. Not a good one for Bengali good even the mango chutney was full of sugar.

With Durga Puja around the corner, had the great desire to have bengali food in Chennai. When asked my bengali friends around, they suggested this place to me.
Disappointed to not find luchi in the menu.Wish they had added that as well.
Ordered:
Veg Thali
Chicken Thali
Maach
Taste was amazing, spicy yet sweet, the way it should be.Quantity was less.
Kish S.
Very limited menu options. Most of menu items are unavailable all the times. Dine in experience not that great: donot expect A/c or Customer Service.
Food is good, not entirely sure of hygiene though.
Rajdeep Deb
Have made it to Petuk numerous number of times, authentic bengali cuisine & homely feeling. Heaven for all the bengalis present here in Chennai, nice place to visit again and again. Regarding the price, it's quiet okay but the quantity has been made less compared to the one in old times. Overall it's a really good place to visit in. :)
Abhishek Singh
Awful place, mis management at its prime.. You never get what you want. In the last four month I have tried to order biryani but it's never in Stock, Do you guys really make biryani??

Want to taste and smell the aromatic bengali food..Come to Petuk.. it's a food paradise for non vegetarian.. bE it paturi or chicken kasha.. or katla the food is cooked sincerely.. the soda adds to the same ...You would love it any day..

I never thought of getting such an awesome authentic Bengali food joint out here in Chennai. The food is just amazing and its pretty cheap as well. I will recommend everyone to come to this place.
Priyabrata Mohapatra
Ate many times here with friends. But today I'm gonna post. We had one one plate of rice, Katla fish and mutton kasha. Previously I had non-veg Dal, Chicken Biriyani, fish finger. After trying all varieties of food then and now, I can say, the quality and quantity, both has been reduced drastically. The portion they used to serve for Katla fish is very less now and they increased from 80 Rs to 90 Rs. Same as Mutton Kasha. You pay 145 Rs just to get 3 small pieces. Extremely disappointed. The only thing you should have is rice, Katla fish (even if they serve less quantity) and non veg dal. That's it.
Sreeya Paul
Only place where I get the best Kolkata biryani in Chennai. :D I have visited this place innumerable times with my college friends.. Just to prove them how tasty Kolkata biryani is.. Apart from biryani, I liked the fish cutlet here. If you are in Chennai, and you are craving Kolkata biryani, then this place is a must visit. 👍

Been here because of the reviews!!! But highly disappointed. Only North Indian dishes and all the ppl are northies. Okaies kind of food. Bangali sweets items are good
Vinitesh Garima
Quite an undecorated place however the food is good! Authentic Kolkata biryani and paturi available here for all Bengali food lovers .. mutton gravy is also nice but my favourite is the fish fingers ! Go only on Saturday & Sunday as they have good crowd - no air conditioning available though !

Did not like the food at all, no items were tasty and fish doesn't taste as the fresh..
We need to wait for little long also for the order to be delivered

I cant rate this place any better than this. This is a heaven for the #Bongs living here in Chennai.
If you go by the looks, you won't be that impressed, but all you have to do is taste it.
I go crazy whenever I visit here, just can't stop ordering food!
