Review Sri Vaishnavaa's Chat Shop - Chennai (Madras)

Sourabh Kothari
Overall a yummy food place with very affordable price. The staff and service is top notch. Only negative thing is no place to sit.
surya srinivasan
Small shop, that can accommodate only 8 people to sit and dine, however a table is available for 5 members to stand and eat.
Deepan Karthik Nedumaran
There's nothing to beat the thattu idli served here. I would highly recommend everyone to try it at least once.

I liked their creations with veg puffs! Their muruku creations were good too. A one time visit for me though!

Despite ordering JAIN food. They served all the 7 items non Jain food. And so spicy that a normal human can’t eat. Disappointed
Sanjeevan Chidambaram
One of the best places to eat thattu idly and dosais. The chat shop is also selling a lot of famous dishes and made delicious. Surely a must go place in chennai for vegetarians
Jihad Abdul Jaleel
This chaat shop has all varieties of chaats as well as puffs, sandwiches and many more things. It's a really good place to have a cheap and quick tummy re-filling.<br/><br/>I've had a few chaats and Cheese Puffs from here in the past. Everything tastes fine and nice except for the spice factor. Most of the items served here are relatively spicier than usual. Also, the Cheese Puffs here can be made better if it is less spicier and the cheese on the puffs is heated before being served.<br/><br/>Food - 3.5/5<br/>Ambience - 2/5<br/>Service - 3/5<br/>VFM - 4/5

The pani puri is here is soooo good, it’s got the perfect spicy pani puri everrr! Anyone who loves spicy aloo in the puri you should definitely go here! A place for spice lovers. <br/>They’ve got really good MUruku sandwich also!<br/>It’s a roadside shop, ambience and all isn’t there, but sorta clean only.
GRP
This is a typical roadside chat shop with just a few seats and creative chat options.<br/><br/>Cheese Kakada Sandwich – A crispy cracker sandwich with mint, fresh veggies and a generous amount of cheese all around; tasted different.<br/>Sweet Chilli and Peri Peri Spring Potato – Crunchy potato, on the whole, some slices were hard and stuck on the stick when peeled out. The Peri-Peri tasted better than the chilli stick.<br/>Cheese Bhujiya Murukku Sandwich – A Murukku sandwich buried under the layer of Bhujiya. The Mayo and mint was the key since they were sour enough to give a strong kick along the bite. <br/><br/>Pocket-friendly spot without any hush. Parking might be a concern during weekends. Personally, I found everything OK but never got the kick in any of the dishes.
Tweety_the_foodie
This is awesome place to try chaat for pocket friendly price.  Quick service and totally worth the money<br/><br/>Their pani poori is one of the best in town.<br/><br/>A must visit place for all chaat lovers.

It's an average chat shop. The mayonnaise masala puri and bujia cheese Puff being their speciality was not so great. The sandwiches are okayish.

Situated on Ormes Road, next to Pathala Ponniamman Temple, I am a regular visitor of this chat shop which is almost 20+ years old and once very famous for their Pani Puri and Bhel Puri, now they have improvised to Sandwich, Thattu Idly, Puffs etc. <br/><br/>Ordered Muruku Cheese Sandwich and Mayo Masala Sandwich. Muruku was hard to bite, Mayo Sandwich tastes Okay.<br/><br/>Location - 3.5/5.0; Ambience - 3.0/5.0; Food - 3.5/5.0; Service - 3.5/5.0; VFM - 3.5/5.0

I love the food over... That thattu idli and red wave dosa are just too amazing...<br/><br/>That shop needs to improve on its cleanliness.. The spoons wer not cleaned properly

My everyday stop for the hungry stomach and small pocket <br/>Best budget I ll ever have had <br/>Their varieties of chat and South Indian gives them their unique flavour <br/>

Having tried thattu idly at multiple places, I can conclude that vaishnavaa's serve the best in town. Been here 3 times now. And will go back again. Must try. The other items are fabulous as well. Pocket friendly and hygienic.

Staff very unfriendly. But chaat is good. Love the bhujia puff and muruku sandwich here. Pani puri and grilled sandwich are ok. Only if the staff and service were better i would visit more often.

Me and my friend ordered veg clear soup, veg momo, schezwan noodles and panner tikka. Panner was not cooked properly. Foods were of ordinary taste which is ok but after having these we felt like drowsy and sleepy for next 3hours.<br/><br/>They have mixed something in their food(might be soda/ajinomoto) which is very bad. Not happy at all.<br/><br/>
Harish Vijayaraghavan
I don't know why people throng this place for dosa. Yeah I know they have variteties but seriously it is not worth the hype. I had podi disa and corn capsicum dosa both were below average I would say<br/>The dosas were too much buttery and also their sambar(if u wish it to be called sambar) was horrible. Chutneys were either too spicy or too bland.<br/>Trust me you can have better dosas in ur house. Overall not satisfied
Sooraj
Located Opposite to Fusilli and Maggewala, This place is usually Crowded.<br/><br/>Frankly speaking, The Pani Poori here is not that Great. But you should try the Murukku Sandwich<br/><br/>And the variety of Dosas here can make you Drool, especially if you are a South Indian Food Lover.<br/>No doubt, the Thattu Idli is served Hot and Tasty along with Chutneys and Sambar.<br/><br/>Should try to improve on their Serving part<br/>But you cant expect more in a Street Food Shop.
Bavadharani Venkatesan
Having heard about their bread dosa, we wanted to try it! We ordered a Mexican bread dosa and a cheese corn dosa..The Mexican bread dosa was a different try, and was extremely hot and spicy..The Mexican bread dosa had a lot of capsicum and chilli to spice it up even more..The corn cheese dosa was not that great, could have had little more cheese and the masala filling tasted plain!<br/>Pricing- Rs.90 for one variety of dosa<br/>Ambiance- No seating available<br/>Service- Faster service
Sriram Sundar Muthukumaran
Had pani puri and sugarcane juice. <br/><br/>Pani puri was good, not very crispy<br/><br/>Sugarcane juice was good. But they told ice cubes not available. <br/><br/>Bottomline - Try only if bored of fusili reasons/ kannappa fast food centre which are nearby and much much better
Dipanjana Khadolia
Am I too late to review this place now ? Vaishnavas has been there for ages now and diversified multi fold in the street food scenes. <br/>My constant go to place for sourcing some cheese / plain murukku sandwich. Some masala puffs and pani puri in my locality. Chaat just like how it should be. And spice content lives up to my expectations :p<br/>Prices are very reasonable. <br/><br/>My picks from here - sev puri , cheese Bhujia puff , Bhel, pani puri and veg sandwich. <br/><br/>Overall :<br/>Food - 4/5.<br/>Vfm - 4/5<br/>Service - NA<br/>Ambiance - NA
Anant Kumar Mundhra
Food - gud in taste and have varied variety of dosas.<br/>Quality - OK.<br/>Serving - bad & pathetic. They'll provide the liquid chutney in ur plate which wil occupy half of the plate, wen u ask them to provide the plastic bowl they'll not provide, even if u insist on paying for the bowl. The same is for spoon...<br/>I call this fast food restaurant as RICH BEGGAR.<br/>They earn so much on daily basis, but can't provide basic things.... BEGGAR BEGGAR BEGGAR BEGGAR BEGGAR
Anusha Srinivasan
Had chat here today !!<br/>Located - next to fusili or the opp Street to paramount hotel.<br/>Got pani puri and dahi puri.<br/>Pani puri was very good.didn't like the sukha puri in the end.<br/>Dahi puri was bad.

Been here too many times to even count! Neat little shop with not much on the menu. Decent place to satisfy your hunger needs when you are looking for a quick bite.
Akilan Lakshman
This place is located right next to fusilli reasons . Ordered for murruku sandwich . They severed it in like no time . It was really yum and then ordered corn cheese toast . It was actually triple tecker sandwich and it was good and filling too . Have to try the mayonnaise puff which is their best seller. <br/>
Partha Sarrathi
Little outlet placed parallel to kanapas <br/>Coming to their food I love each and every dishes of them . Pani poori and masala poori are total blissful chats too spicy which is wat i like . Cheese murukku and mayo puff are their signature chats must try for everyone
Swathi Chandrasekaran
If you're up for some road side snacking, this place is pretty cool. Located right next to Fusilli reasons, it has plenty of space for two wheeler parking, while four wheelers will give you some trouble. I tried the pani puri here and found them to be delicious. The pani was spicy and chilled and the area was quite clean for a road side stall. They have a good variety of sandwiches too.
Richi
we came here to check out fusili reasons. But since it was crowded we thought of having pani puri. Wasn't one of the best I had. Decent enough.

This joint is located right next to fusilli reasons in a small and quiet lane.<br/>Its very cheap compare to its taste and quality of food .One of the best chaat shops in the city. They serve good murku SANDWICH and cheese puff should try one of them......
Sugan
I came to know about this place when i visited Fusilli reason few month back. I just thought of having some chat item in a new place, suddenly this place strike my mind so went for it. <br/><br/>It can be located easily. Before the famous fusilli reason. If you dont know fusilli reason, then it may be bit difficult since it is in small street in ormes road. Nearest other landmarks are Hotel Paramount, 99F gym, Kovai Palamudir Solai off kelly road. From there just 500 meters max.<br/><br/>Parking of 2 wheeler is available. 4 wheeler is pain ful. Need to look for in the street or road side which is not that easy. This place is like a extended road side shop so dont expect much on ambiance. Service was average. Today no much customers still took around 10-15 min for murukku sandwich. <br/><br/>We ordered pani poori, masala puff and murukku sandwich. All of them were decent. Onion given for pani poori taste like some old cutted pieces. Rest are tasted fine. Price is also reasonable. Can give a try to taste some pure veg sandwich and chat.
Raghavi Rudra
Its right next to fusili reasons and one of the best places for chaats. Any chaat u order tastes good and scores on terms of quality. Murukku sandwich is so good!!!

Stopped by while traveling for work. The menu is unbelievable. Everything you can't imagine, they have it. Value for money and really good menu. <br/><br/>Don't miss this place.
Harish Kumar
This place was a suprising find. Was waiting for my take away at fusili reason next door and decided to snack! My gluttony always suprises me. This place is well hidden inside a small lane people familiar with fusili reasons would know the area.<br/><br/>Parking for cars is always an issue in the place because of the narrow roads but I usually walk as its close to my place. I would recommend people to park a little further out and walk because parking is an issue here.<br/><br/>Chats were good, the only problem was the ambience, it is not bad. It was clean and neat but they can use brighter lights and give the street food feel to it. This might also be because fusili reasons next door has their place well lit up and causes this place to look dull, relatively.
Sowpernika Ananthanarayanan
Never judge a shop by its looks! And this place is an perfect example for that. Located inside a not so happening Street, this place delivers yum chaat. The Muruku Sandwich is something you shouldn't miss at all. VFM-10/5. Totally check this place out.
Akshay Bothra
One of the best and unique south Indian delicacies. The Idlis are big and delicious. There Dosas are available with different flavours like Panner tikka, spring roll etc. All are top notch. Also try there Mexican Dosa sandwich with mayonnaise. It's too good. One should definitely try their food. It's always crowded after 8 and that's for a reason.
Kingsley Sp
Perfect stop to have snacks. Lil crowded though in the evening. <br/>Any opportunity to be in Kilpauk Garden try this place..
Krishna Charan
Switching between this place and fu silli reasons is a deadly combo! Wouldn't mind travelling from far away for a mere khakra sandwich here!
Sharath
Last year only I got to know this place. Its mostly crowded at early evening by school people only. Its very famous among teenagers. The murrukku sandwich is must try! Its a very tasty dish here. Please note that the chat are BASICALLY spicy so if you aren't a fan of spicy food, please mention to reduce the spice. I myself always prefer spicy dishes but was teary-eyed after eating te masala poori :P. But, overall a very pocket friendly and soothing vibe place with excellent and dynamic chat items.
Vandana Krishnan
Just chanced across this place and was amazed at the crowd thronging this small roadside shop. We loved the butter dosa and thattu idli. Unfortunately the sambar got over. So looking forward to our next visit, hopefully, soon.

The best place in chennai for thattu idly (nei idly) and for chats.. It was quite good and prices were reasonable.. A must try place to taste chennai food ..!
Saranya Sridharan
My most fav spot in chennai!!!watever u eat or not,do try their puff with green chutney which is just ymmy spicy :-P...murukku sandwich, cheese sandwich, besan dosa, jaljira, all  r must try..spicy lovers ,must visit!!!
Aishwarya L
Yes after the famous Thattu idli shop this is crowded for the chats. They have the famous murukku sandwiches. Had their pani pooris. The pani was spicy and good which immediately gives you a wow feel with tears in your eyes. Must try their pani pooris.
Sumangala Roy
If you wanna try something different this is the place one must go to...the thattu idli is something that's served special here but please don't miss out on the other interesting stuff on the menu..I haven't tried that thing called the chocolate dosa listed on their menu yet cause my mum made a very unappetizing face when I read it out, but I'm hoping to sneak in there and try it the next time...you may fimd the prices a bit exorbitant for just a dosa or whatever, but don't.miss.this.for.anything.
Raju Sharma
Good place for chat items... Love the pani puri and masala veg puff over there... Nice place and food at reasonable prices...definitely a place to visit...

This is one of the best places in chennai for chats. Located right next to fusilli reasons. The cheese puff here is very very good. Cheese murukku sandwich is also worth a mention. And it is also pocket friendly.

After rave reviews in the media and here in zomato this place has lobg been in my wishlist. Today I had an opportunity to go there. At the outset, the place is crowded with school kids gossiping and giggling, I felt older for the first time in life..:P <br/><br/>This place is a small tiny eatery located off Ormes road, on the Sri Vasudevan road. I went for the most famous snack of this place , murukku sandwich. Instantly I felt nostalgic as it kindled my gustatory memories of the days I grew up at salem. <br/><br/>In salem, thattu vadai set is a very famous indigenous snack which is almost same as this murukku sandwich. In thattu vadai set, they have two thattu vadai ( thattai) sandwiched in between with mint chutney on the one thattai and kaara chutney on the other with generous filling of carrot, beetroot, onion scrapings. It used to taste heavenly. <br/><br/>The murukku sandwich is a very close variant of that salem thattu vadai set. The murukku sandwich is made of two tiny murukkus, with layers of onion, tomato, bhujia, and mint chutney. Taste wise also it resembles closely thattu vadai set. At Rs 30/plate, it is more than worth your money. YUMMY...!
Arun Meyappan
Bujjia puff and muruku sandwich are mind blowing. Come relish and enjoy the feel. I assure you ll keep coming back to the place. Mayoniese topping will also be good.
Sreevathsan Sivakumar
First of all to mention, i never expected such awesomeness in a small shop. <br/>Thattu idly here was like food I've never tasted before.. <br/>It was too good... <br/>And who would imagine someone serves cheese bhujia puff and panneer bhujia puff.. <br/>They are a must try..!! <br/>Chocolate dosa was a unique thing but too sweet to have one all by yourself..!! <br/>And the other varieties of dosa like panneer butter masala dosa and gobi masala dosa were good too..!!! <br/>It is a must try place and i definitely recommend it to my fellow foodies..!!
Hussain Kabeer
The thattu idly with ample podi and ghee is really nice and filling...their dosa's looked appetising will try next time ,the murku sandwich is decent..
CGR
Heard rave reviews about their thattu idly and went there . It's really awesome if you have it then and there , piping hot and fresh . One idly is really filling with all the ghee and podi with chutney - 2 types. Didn't have the space to try anything else . The only downside is that you have to stand and eat and it's a very tiny place
Lalitha R
I had been here a couple of days ago for the first time. I loved the murukku cheese sandwich, it was really yummy. Pani puri was good too, especially the meetha pani (had tasted in many places before but this was super), khatta pani was just awesomeeee..   <br/>Thattu idly was very delicious with the 3 different varieties of chutni. A must try for all Chennaities.
Balaji Rajkumar
Been here a couple of times. There are 2 Vaishnaava's outlets actually, pretty close by to each other. One across the road serving Thattu Idlys and dosas and the other serving Chaat and Sandwiches. <br/>The Chaat Shop is decent. Love the murukku cheese sandwich and the cheese puff. Pani Puri is decent. Very Spicy in fact!<br/><br/>The Vaishnavaa's that serves Thattu Idlys is really good too. Their variety of dosas are nice.. cheese podi dosa and Mexican bread dosa are a must try along with the Thattu idly.
Shivashish Tarkas
It use to be my favorite till 2011,You tell any chat items they were the best at it but they have lost the charm since a long time now. Pani Puri tastes bad,Vaishnavas was also known for its chutney.it was finest of its kind but over the last 4 years, the taste has also changed.it gas gained enormous reputation if south indian food is concerned which tastes amazingly good. I would suggest people to visit this place if they want to taste some amazing south indian stuffs. If they want to try chat items then i think this aint a good place to chip in.
Nikhilbaid.87
Famous for its tattu idly, this is a small joint in ormes Road. I dont like the other items much but love the idly tht they make. Very reasonably priced. Its open till midnight i beleive. Very much preferred for a quick bite.
Lakshmanamoorthy MBBS
This shop is situated in the ormes road near Murugan idly kadai, (Paramount too).. தட்டு இட்லி very famous just with 30rs. IDLY size is too big,2 idly enough for dinner. Variety of dosas available( Mexican dosa, podi dosa.) You can get parcel too .but there is no place for dinning you have to eat with standing outside. its worth for our money .. small shop but big q. SO we have to wait for both billing and getting the order.,,
Deepika Kothari
Cheese Puff, cheese murukku sandwich, pani puri are all time favourites there..<br/>There is no sitting but considering the food this can be ignored.<br/>Very light on pocket.
Jaindiran
Wonderful place to hangout with friends. Their pani pori will bring tears from your eyes .You need to wait for your order, but worth waiting .... Love it:))
Sunny Deepak Punwani
If you are a spice lover, this place is for you. The chat, especially the pani puri is one of his best dishes. The chutney is spicy and the Pani is cold. The other dishs what I like is his Cheese puff and Muruku Sandwich. Overall this place is the right spot for an evening filler.
Sairam
I just love the Thattu Idly for which I was introduced to this shop!. Their pani puri brings out tears from ma eyes.. Mexican dosa and paneer dosa are my favourites. The cost of dosa is quite high other than that a decent shop to go for with friends.
Vardhaman Modi
Love the Idli and Mexican Dosa. They have variety of dosa to choose from and most of them are good. It is also one of the places which is crowded at all weekends and holidays.
Avinash Shroff
very bad dosa ! its very crowded on sunday with no token system .... they serve who ever comes fist inspite of buying a token . If you have influence you will be served first . you have to beg for you food there
Food For Thought
Yet another self service joint serving bangalore style south indian food. <br/><br/>The place is extremely cramped and always crowded. There is no token system in place and one has to wait for a long time to get their food.<br/><br/>Ordered Thatte idly and ghee podi dosa. Thatte idly was soft and was served piping hot. It was marinated with podi and ghee. Tasted very good. Ghee podi dosa was again very well made. Typical bangalore style dosa. Chutney and sambhar were watery.<br/><br/>For a self service joint, the prices are very high. Hygiene is a big concern with chutney and sambhar kept in the open. The place also doesnt look very clean.
Vinodh Lux
This is my second visit to the shop and i am writing it now because during my first visit, I was full and my friend took me just as a company. This time my bro Praveen reminded me when we were trying to munch something af a tiry shopping. <br/><br/>You have ample space to park as it is located in a posh street and you have lot of space alongside ormes road.<br/><br/>Regards to the food, chutney puff and mayyonase puff were out of the world. Pani poori was normal and you should try murukku sandwich which you normally get anywhere along kilpauk to sowcarpet strech. They use mccain mayo which adds taste to the order. I wanted to try out more but our belly became tight.<br/><br/>Wrt service you need to hav lot of patience to wait for your order and if you are there on a weekend, you need to wait atleast 30 minutes if you want anything other than a panipuri. Basically they dont track your orders on FIFO basis.<br/><br/>Overall a must visit eatout and for teens its a nice place to hangout.<br/><br/>
Poonam & Lokesh
Had been here only once. Tried the ghee idli and podi idli.... And have to admit, the ghee idli was made to tease your taste buds.... You are surely tempted to have more of it. <br/>Its a self service food center and I've heard that it gets very crowded in the weekends and post 9 on weekdays, but the wait for food is worth it. Will go back to try some more dishes.

#191. [11-Feb-15] :-<br/><br/>[This review is about their second outlet on Anna Nagar west. Posting it here since that one was not available & also goes by name & management]<br/><br/>Visited CTC friend Arun Jeyabalane yesterday, who lives in Anna Nagar, who has visited both Vaishnavaa (Kilpauk & Anna Nagar). He was raving about this place for very good dosas.<br/><br/>Located on the 5th Main road covered by residential areas, which is almost the centre of Anna Nagar. We have invited another friend as well.<br/><br/>It's a very small restaraunt & claims that they serve Jain food. It's a self service restaurant, where u get token on the cash counter & collect the food at the food counter.<br/><br/>Me n my friend ordered two thatte idly while waiting for the other friend. Thatte idly was awesome, normally I don't like the idlies, but this one served with dal & ghee on the top, with two chutneys & sambar. Idlies were so soft & yummy.<br/><br/>By the time we finished , third friend arrived. We have idly for him as well, then we went on ordering 'Red Wave Bread Dosa' & 'Kadai Gobi Karaikudi Dosa'. Gobi dosa was served first, which was so oily & spicy. But tasted good. It had fried Gobi/Cauliflower masala in it. Then the Bread Dosa, which was like Dosa Sandwich. It was so hot, but again oily as well very tasty<br/><br/>Then our next order was paniyaram, 5 freaking hot paniyaram was served with red chutney, which was moreblike chilli chutney. By the time we finish the paniyaram, all the three stomach were full, it costs only ₹340 for food & ₹20 for water bottle. Worth the money spent.<br/><br/>Cost breakup,<br/><br/>Thatte Idly - ₹120 (3)<br/>Kadai Gobi Karaikudi Dosa- ₹80<br/>Red Wave Bread Dosa - ₹110<br/>Paniyaram - ₹30 (so cheap for 5)<br/>Water bottle - ₹20<br/><br/>If you don't mind the ambiance & self service part, you will get very tasty food here (with lots of oil though). Would have rated 4.5, especially for the taste, but they serve with so much oil, had to reduce it to 3.5.<br/><br/>Also heard from my friend that Kilapauk outlet has more variety of dosas & chaat items.

Sri Vaishnavaa's or as we Bain school students call it "Vaishnavs". :D<br/>Being a product of Bain School, this used to be our favorite street eat/chat ka dukaan! :D<br/>It's just a roadside chat shop where you order, get your food, stand out and hog it all. Previously(eons ago), was on the main road and now it's shifted inside. Zero ambiance. Mostly crowded with kids/students.<br/><br/>Food(4/5): They are innovative in their own ways. For example, they have puff sandwich. And many other such items. You get panipuri,  cheese panipuri, muruku sandwich, cheese muruku sandwich and so on.. Their panipuri has an unique taste which I could never find in any other panipuri thelas/stalls/shops I have had from, in Chennai. Special mention to the last "free ka" panipuri they give with bhujia. It's heavenly! :D <br/><br/>Service(3/5): Very very slow. The place is always crowded and service is always slow. By the time you get your order in your hand, your craving might die too. :(<br/><br/>VFM(5/5): TOTALLY! 100 bucks and your tummy is happy and you too!

This place is a addiction . <br/>Love their chat . <br/>Must try --> pani puri , murruku sandwich , bujiya sandwich . <br/>Affordable price . <br/>Awesome place .

Tried Cheese murukku sandwich and Bhel puri.... Very spicy! you'll definitely need to keep a soft drink next to you..... Tastes good! My evening snacks over with 80 bucks! :-)

Loved this drink JD, not Jack Daniels , its Jaljeera Digest. Awesome drink @30 bucks with mix of jaljeera and Soda. Also tried the Cheese Murukku Sandwhich was decent enuf and veg cheese sandwhich was not that great. All the other items were stocked out by the time we went around 9.30<br/>Do not miss this JD if u pass by, it was a saviour for our dinner after attacking the chats over here !! <br/>
