Not the best ambience but you will definitely love the food here if you are fan of madurai style food.
i never understood ppl who go to restaurants like these and order gobi manchurian .
this place is famous for two things. The mutton chukka and the rasam.

Kothu poratta and briyani were too good and they are famous for rasam don't miss them
It's like finding an oasis in a long dead desert.
people who often come to t.nagar for shopping usually finds it hard to find a good non-veg restaurant. Today I too was one among them, stuck here without any option with my friends. As usual my guys turned towards the super eater to suggest a place. Tnagae is not my place, so I looked up to zomato. We were tired already, and all the better restaurants where more than a kilometer away, so my foodie sense chose this one. And we were not disappointed
The hotel is air-conditioned and was pretty crowded. Was a great escape from outside climate.
We orderd biryani, chicken fry, kola urunda, mutton chukka.
Biryani was awesome, we enjoyed the taste. Mutton chukka mmmm OK. But the quantity is too low for its price. And about kola urunda, never buy that . never. Chicken fry is OK normal.
And the rating is for its biryani alone!
A place where you can have madurai style food.
No parking facilities.
And the ambiance is not great.
They are famous for the non veg meals, parottas and kari dosas.
May not be exceptional but definitely a place to try if you love ooru style food.
Apart from their chicken and mutton kulambu, their sukkas and kolas are a regular order.Don't be worried about their oil filled starters.May not be healthy but won't upset your stomach.
In evenings, don't miss out their parotta and idly combinations.
Customer service is good.
This hotel is especially for people who comes from deep South Tamilnadu.. the food reminds our taste buds the taste of Madurai and beyond. Theres no great ambience there as it is placed on the busy bursting streets of Tnagar. No car parking available. But the food is good
One dish can make a restaurant. The fact that I am willing to push through the T Nagar Crowds, the fact that there is no parking in the vicinity, and the apocalypse for the mutton chukka here is testament to that. You don't get mutton chukka of this kind in any other restaurant in Chennai. It isn't dry, it's in a thick spicy gravy - small fatty and meaty chunks of soft meat that melt in your mouth.
They have mutton biryani, and meals, and nice flaky barottas in the evenings to accompany the chukka, if you like. Just treat them as carriers for the chukka.
The place is clean, not much on ambiance, but that's not what you should be coming here for.
It is inaccessible for wheelchair users on account of a few steps leading to the entrance, and the T Nagar pavement itself being inaccessible and barriers preventing vehicles from stopping and dropping you right outside the restaurant. The service is really friendly with the manager making helpful suggestions on what to order.
The mutton chukka portion is quite small, but it is quite rich, but since you've made the effort to go there you should just start by ordering two.
I have never dined in at this unpretentious place but have taken away umpteen times. Over the years this little restaurant continues to serve excellent Tamilnadu non veg food. It is admirable how they have kept up the high standards in quality and taste. The mutton biriyani continues to be excellent and the mutton kola continues to be awesome. The fish curry was also very good. Their rasam is among the best in town. Unfortunately we have never tried the other dishes as we always go back to the same things as we enjoys them so much. The prices are very competitive.
There is no parking.
They have done well not to expand to multiple locations like some of their competitors who, from serving awesome food at one or two outlets went to serving average fare at many locations.
This restaurant had been in my wish list for quite sometime. It is a Chennai branch of their famous outlet in Madurai. Went there on a rainy weekday with 2 of my foodie friends. We ordered Mutton Kola, Egg veechu, Mutton Sukka,Parotta and Chicken Pepper Fry.Mutton kola was cold but tasted good. Mutton sukka was perfect in every way. One of the best I have had in Chennai so far. Egg Veechu and Chicken Pepper were good if not awesome.
Bottom Line: Overall a decent place to eat . But the ambiance and quality of the service needs a huge face lift.
I have been to madurai arulanandam many times, mostly for dinner. Really a feast for non veg lovers, typical south tamil nadu style!
- Am a fan of their kari dosa which topped with egg & chicken or mutton. Kola urundai at the best, i had the costliest one from Maplai (restaurant) which is not good as Arulanandam.
- Nattu kozhi with onion fry, the best country chicken curry i ever had, every time i order this with dosa & idly, they serve it along with chicken & mutton gravy, the yummiest gravies which comes for free of cost of idly & dosa, they also serves regular coconut chutney.
On downside,
- There is no parking for 2 wheeler nor 4 wheeler, they get enough crowd from ranganathan street.
- Not a fine dining, the place was very neat before 4 years now i see the place lost it cleanliness, management should take care of this. Also it is very difficult for newbie to find the place, they having a coffee outlet outside which totally hide the place!
My love for this hotel started in Madurai when me and my cousin hunted this retro styled hotel to find ourselves not wanting to stop ordering food the authentic Tamil non vegetarian menu. The one in TNagar lives up to the name. The best thing is you don't have to empty your wallet. The bill really surprises you after you have had your heart's full. Truth be told -I am a fan for eateries which satisfy without eating your monthly budget and this scores !!!

The native Madurai taste..
You don't get varieties of chicken.. But it is good for lunch after a heavy shopping session :) Enjoy your lunch here except Mondays.
I wholly endorse Vijay's review. If it's food, it must be at Arulanandam's.
After seeing/ so many reviews n friend's recommendation.. We decided to head out to this place.. We just glanced their menu and ordered one fish fry meals(meals with fish very) and one country chicken meals(meals with country chicken) this is what their combo is.. We just can't order only meals.. I must say fish fry was too good this is one of the best fish fry I had on chennai after nair mess.. For country chicken meals they gave Large piece of country chicken with the gravy.. It was Awesome.. Hmm.. Though these dishes were too good the biggest let down is their fish gravy and mutton gravy.. Fish gravy was too bland.. Mutton gravy was like a kurma with too much of grated coconut in it.. On the whole, it was a satisfying meal.. Will definitely visit again..
People who realy die for down south food, make this as your next pitspot.
My favorite is mutton sukka.

People who realy die for down south taste, make this as your next pit spot
My favorite is mutton sukka.
This is the Chennai Branch of the famous Arulanandham Hotel at Madurai Vilakkuthoon, which is one among the best hotel at madurai for years.
I remember during my childhood, we would travel to madurai from my home town which is 50 kms away from madurai, just to eat Non Veg meals at Arulananda. I am an ardent fan of this hotel and i would say worlds best Mutton Chukka is here !!
3 years back, I came to know that there exist a branch at chennai and i blindly drove into T Nagar to find the hotel. With all dificulties I found the hotel in the cramped place in the Ranganathan Street :( where I can go only by walk. it is next to the AAB and opposite to Saravana Bhavan.
Place was ok. With out any thoughts i ordered the meals with mutton sukka which is my default order at madurai Arulananda for ages. WoW.... it was the same taste !! i just felt i was at madurai....
Since then I have visited atleast 50+ times so far... Great food at resonable place..
No complaints on Food or service...
The biggest problem is the location. You cant even park a bicycle there. You have to just walk in...not a place to hang out... just eat.... strictly for Non Veg eaters only..
They serve awesome Parotas and Dosas with chicken and mutton curry for dinner..
Briyani here is not as good as we get in their madurai hotel as it is prepared in Basmathi rice in chennai and in madurai it is Jeera Samba !!
Best bets are:
1. Meals With Mutton Chukka / Mutton Curry
2. Meals with Fish Curry (Viral Fish)
3. Parota with Mutton Curry
4. Fish Fry
5. Kola Urundai.
6. Omlette...
their Rasam is one of the best and it has a unique taste...
When we drop in late into madurai arulananda, they usually say nothing is available... i remember n number of times we have requested just rice with rasam and a omlette .. It was divine !!
Now being at bangalore... missing Arulanandam very badly !!
Must fry Food !!
The food is good, everything is affordable here, but it's not as cheap as i would like it to be. There's fine dining upstairs too. It's located in the busy streets of pondy bazaar so it's often crowded and getting a table may be hard, especially in the evening.

The service was neat and good. Except A2B special Biriyani (I don’t recommend), the items we had were tasty, sumptuous and good. Go for it.
I want to thank Arunkumar V (manager of A2B in Tamil Nadu) and Chinnar Branch for showing an honest and kind heart of the people of India. I am from out of country and I mistakenly left my purse in a bathroom. I would have lost everything I needed for international travel if my purse had been taken away. But Chinnar gave my purse to Arunkumar V who put it immediately into a safe place for keeping. Not one single item was missing from my purse. These two represented the kindest of hearts to a first time visitor in India. I pray a blessing of goodness and kindness upon them. Sincerely, Carolyn Olliff
I always prefer having vegetarian food from A2B and have tasted almost all the branches in and around chennai.
Those who are new to Chennai and prefer vegetarian can step in and have a good food here.
Another branch of Adyar Ananda Bhavan. Taste is good as their other branches. They have maintained the taste in all their branches.
This is one of the best Chennai based veg restaurant..it has several branches in Chennai and in Singapore and USA and other places too..food is awesome ...you can find South Indian and North Indian both...quality and taste is good..Rates are reasonable...and service is also good...paneer dosa is speciality of this restaurant..:)
Good place to try noth Indian chats, pav bhaji and sandwiches.
