Many old restaurants are updating their ambience but this place is still sticking with their classic ambience. They serve falooda for decades which is also their signature. I have tried their curries, rotis and briyani it's all average. It's all about their desserts and bakery. Many dont know about their bread pudding which is my personal favourite. Evening time busy traffic park the bike a cup of tea, a plate of samosa and bread pudding perfect evening snack 😀

One of the Chennai's oldest restaurant. Still the taste and the style of restaurant didn't change. Those things made durbar a unique one :) the Briyani and the salna is my favorite and of course falooda. Both r mouth watering. The presentation and the staffs everything is good. I would definitely recommend people to eat at least once in their life time to experienced the real taste.

A value for money place, 350-400rs for 2 range. Biryani is good. My rating is totally based on the food and the price they charge, Though a lot of things can be improved but the place won't disappoint you if you are getting down at Chennai Central & feeling hungry. Not much for vegetarians.

This review is specially for their Badam Kheer. I just had that here one night and was in love with it.
Will update my review after having proper food here. But for now, Leme talk about this amazing Badam Kheer.
It was so delicious and what caught my attention was it's green in color. Never seen before. And the taste was sooooo good. For just 60₹ this is totally worth the drive to Central to have this drink. Thick with ice cream and Badam, this is a must try on the city for sure!
Go drink it and you'll know what I mean!

Bon appetite :)

My father frequented this place and though we don't live in Chennai anymore I pay my visit whenever I land here. And the fact that you can walk over from central station is a true blessing...

It's just old world charm all over.. wooden tables... Chairs... Large mirrors... A huge cashier desk and the entire hotel has a strong aroma of food..
Service is simple... No frills...

Their chicken Biryani is my regular there... The perfect way to describe it is balanced... Neither too spicy or bland... Just perfect.. authentic muslim style... You are also served brinjal curry with it...
Finish off with Chennai best falooda or indulge in the caramel pudding...

Or go bhai style and finish ur biryani with a cup of tea....

Bon Appetit

An aunthentic Muslim restaurant. The place itself gives u the feel of being in a very old traditional restaurant. More than the main course, I love the desserts in this place . The mango falooda in this restaurant is the most favourite of all its customers. Never leave the restaurant without having the falooda

Having been their customer from my childhood, I always love to have Briyani & Falooda here whenever I step out of Chennai Central Railway Station.

The authentic taste of Muslim Briyani is available here only 😍

The Briyani is well prepared with perfect amount of all masalas & tender soft chicken pieces. This is not too spicy or very less spicy to complaint about, but a perfect amount of everything for one person.

Their famous falooda is in my evergreen list not to be missed out anytime. A must one to have in summer to chill ourselves ❤️

This is my go to place to have Falooda🍨especially during the month of Ramadaan. It’s a good spot to meet your Muslim homies after taraweeh prayers. The ambience may not be all that great but the taste and quality of the food has been consistent for ages. The Falooda, served in a medium sized glass, is topped with seasonal fruits. So it’ll vary from time to time. They also have cakes, pastries and tarts. Parking might be a little challenging as this restaurant is located on a busy road near Central Railway Station. But that doesn’t stop people from coming here. You’ll always find it buzzing with people walking away with parcels or just chilling with a chai 😁

#price decent value for the food
#payment min card value is 200 / cash , no for online payments !

Food 🥘
1) Falooda one of the signature dish in deserts
They has different variety but the standard 2 things are national falooda and Rose falooda it never fails

Adding for falooda u can additional mango desert 100ml to top up the national falooda !

They are best in famous non veg like mutton paya
, gravy with rottis and parotos!

It was one of an experience for me eating at dis place😇 . Cuz my train was abt to depart at 9.15 n reached d restaurant around 8.30 😧. When d waiter came to me wit a menu i ordered right away without out receiving it as i went through it in Zomato 😋. Ordered a plain biriyani, egg burji, national spl falooda. Gosh i was panicking abt missing d train every second of wait time until d food arrived which was around huge 10mins 😧😫. Once it came i was like a bear eating a whole fish in a gulp 😌. Emptied a huge plate of biriyani n egg burji within 7mins which shld be a record of some kind 😅. The biriyani was mildly spiced n tasted gud whereas egg burji was quite oily but went well wit d biriyani. Then i was pestering d waiter to bring their famous falooda n it was then he seemed to understand my situation 😀. He brought it in quick time n it disappeared in tat fashion. It had a mango ice-cream scoop at top n vanilla in bottom n fruits like papaya apple pineapple were sandwiched in between. It tasted gud but wasn't out of d world 👼. The waiter brought bill in no time as he saw my way of eating 🤓.
Overall it was gud old place to fill ur belly 🙂. Vfm. Not much on ambience or cleanliness or service. Bill was 180 n no taxes 😊.

The best restaurant in chennai for idiyappam and paya. Repeat for so many times. Chapthi and chicken curry also great. I first ate during ramzan. It was indeed very special.

From that time, every time I am here, and I have never skipped paya once in all these visits. Biriyani also one to taste ..

Missed to write reviews every time. But today wanted to update. Good to see this is reviewed by zomato a lot.

Hygiene goes for a toss, u cannot expect a best service as we expect in others. This can be improved. Lot of people are coming, expecting if this will be get better in future. Right now it's 2/5.

Food -4/5.

Overall, you cannot miss this. Taste the Paya once here.

This place is famous for their meals at very economical rate.

Have been here long time ago, back then they served unlimited meals for just 60Rs.!

I can still feel the taste of it when I think of this place.Very much mouth watering taste that lingers still.
Their parupu podi, rasam, kolambu, sambar, everything is a wow! I personally love their parupu podi rice with gheee...

Forget about the ambiance and service.. this place is always crowded. But worth giving it a try for their taste.

Someone was recently asking where to get good faloodas with nuts. First place that came to mind was National Durbar. Their National falooda is amazing for the money (just 60 bucks). It starts with a pretty good mango ice cream scoop at the top (this is where most lower priced outlets mess up with cheap stuff) which is creamy then come lots of nuts including cashews, pista, raisins and fig! Followed by fruits (mostly papaya though). The jelly has almost no taste I can remember but at least doesn't taste artificial. Finally a layer of cold fresh cream if I'm not mistaken. Probably vanilla ice cream.

So when you are nearby the central and if you have some time in your hand, then visiting this nearby restaurant is something that sounds the best!

They are famous for their faloodas, bun and jam, chai and other Indian delicacies. So I was around 8.30pm here and I decided to have egg noodles and their much spoken legendary falooda.

Although noodles was average, their pocket friendly falooda was extremely awesome! Faloodas are topped with a scoop of mango ice cream. Very easy in pockets, they have separate counters for take away. Ambiance is kinda old place like and no air conditioning.

Service is quick however it's little unorganised. The bhai who sits at the cash counter is down to earth and such people who treats customers with love are so rare!

Always on my list if it comes to Central! Would like to have their much discussed items in upcoming visits.

Edit 1: Biryani is a must have here! Tastes great and meats are so juicy and succulent.
Self made caramel pudding is a perfect way to end the meal if you don't want to have the falooda.

A good Falooda place!Ordered a National special Falooda and a Rose Falooda.

Rose milk lovers will definitely love the Rose Falooda, which comes with an overdose of Sabja seeds, two scoops of creamy Vanilla ice cream, a tasteful amount of Rose syrup, and nothing more. As simple as that! This is priced at INR 40.

The National special Falooda was clearly the winner (when compared to its Rose version) with the first layer filled with a creamy Vanilla cream, stuffed in it are Vermicelli, Sabudana, and dry fruits such as fig and dates. The second layer formed the tempting red jelly mixed with Sabja seeds and fresh fruits like Mango (my tongue yelled it was the Banganapali Mango), Apple, and all these topped with a creamy Mango flavored ice cream. This is priced at INR 60.

Service was pretty quick, got both the Faloodas in less than 10 minutes.

The ambience will give you a retro feel, looking at the seating arrangement, tables and chairs, serving people, serving methodology, display of bakery items, etc.

Parking might be a challenge for 4 wheelers, 2 wheelers can park their vehicles in the nearby NO Parking area!

With high expectations and some recommendations from fellow foodies, landed up to this place.

Orders :

1. Veg noodles (I know this sounds odd to order a Veg noodles from one of the places which satisfies all carnivores)

Tasted : good
Not oily at all and qty was OK.

2. SPL Falooda : Awesome.
At 60₹, this was VFM for all of us.

The mango Ice cream scoop atop the falooda really was good.

3. Pista Milk : Average.
Nothing raving.
A hint of rose flavor but apart from that it was OK.

4. Badam Kheer with Ice cream - Another Awesome find.
The green colored Kheer made us question them if it was Pista or Badam ;)
Taste v gud.

5. Chocolate Lassi - another OK dish. Not much chocolate flavor , chocolate sauce sprayed at the side of the glass. Nothing SPL to rave about.

Much said abt the parking problems by other fellow foodies.

If you r near Central - don't miss this place :)

National Durbar is a very popular restaurant in Periamet area..Nearby Park Station and the junction near Rippon Building...Easily visible right on the junction...This is one restaurant in chennai which holds its essence in place till date..hasn changed a bit since my first visit..Frequented by my grand dad and my dad in their time when they used to live in triplicane area....but after we moved to pallavaram we were cut of from this place...but we made sure to visit the place once in a while...

Getting to this place is a bit tricky as its located in a busy junction...Parking too is a problem...so the best bet is to park the vehicle in the nearby streets or even better is to get an auto from the nearby railway stations or bus stands..The place has a pretty old school look...Has more of a mess look than a restaurant but is cleaned and maintained well...by clean i dont mean spotlessly clean..they just get the job done...Has 2 floors of seating...While the ground floor is a quick bite and move type to seat around 30 ppl...The First floor is more for families..they even have those cabinet type family areas for those who wanna dine in privacy...

In addition to this they also have three take away counter up front...One of them serves Bread and related items...the second their indian sweet varieties and third is the latest addition the pastries and stuffs...and also next to it is a place where they make faloodas for takeaway...So people who wanna know what goes inside the famous national falooda can try this counter...made in Front our eyes....

Service is one of the awesome factors at this...they make you realize that good service can be provided even without all those service charges and taxes...Kind and Courteous guys always on their feet...we have no need to call on to them...they make sure of that...from refelling of water to placing extra orders...they will be on constant vigil...There is person called Mamu here...He is been in this restaurant from the time i remember...Serves with a smile always..

In the past 2 visits i tried Biryani, chicken curry, Pepper Chicken, Wheat parotta, idiyappam, Bun butter Jam, Caramel Pudding and The Famous falooda....The only thing i was disappointed about was the chicken curry...

Biryani : Great as always...Quantity is average...egg biryani with 2 eggs is a rarity nowadays...but here we still get it for 70rs...

Chicken Curry 1/2 : Was pretty bland and the seemed over cooked...Was also more watery...the one dish that disappointed me...

Pepper Chicken Masala : My Favorite at this place..Spicy and Peppery..the perfect way to describe the dish...True to its name...Tasty as hell...Goes well with wheat parotta and iddiyapams...

Wheat Parotta : Normal wheat parottas that are mostly made at home...they are good..soft and crispy...just hope you get them hot...

Idiyapam : Soft and fluffy one...Taste wise are the regular ones...

Bun Butter Jam : This is one item that has lost its magic...seems more like the one we get in bakeries...though its made on order its not that great now...

Caramel Pudding : A regular caramel pudding..nothing great..

Falooda : Prices have gone from 10rs to almost 60 rs now...but the taste still remains the same...a bit differences here and there...but overall you wont find much of a difference...loaded with nuts and raisins...Yummy to the Core...

Though the food is still really great..it really has come down a bit...Not the amazing food i used to have in my childhood....but even now given the price which could range around 250-300rs for 2 people is complete bang for your buck and the items like falooda, custard, China grass, Wheat parottas Pepper paya and pepper chicken are still one of a kind and a must try in chennai....

      -------------------XXXX----------------------

Note to Friends : What better place to be my 500th review...I have not cared abt 100s and 200s till now..but this time my friends suggested to make it special and they even suggested some 5star Hotels...but am a person who thinks a place cant become special just by spending some extra money...A place can become special only if it has some importance in our life...While i was thinking about the places i have visited since my childhood..i realized i had reviewed all of them...Then i remembered i had deleted this review couple of months back because of bad experiences by couple of most trusted foodie friends...So i thought this is the place...and it would give me a chance to check the food for myself...

I would like also thank all my foodie friends for being there with me all this while...without them i wont be here...And zomato you have been a great platform for foodies like us...Hope i haven missed anyone...

Dining in National Durbar is like driving an antique car in the super car era. I loved this place it was like travelling back in time to 90's. The hotel does not have interior no AC no fancy lightings yet its an awesome place. The hotel lies diagonally opposite to Chennai corporation. The menu is awesome with almost everything in non veg at a very minimal price and variety of desserts which most of the fancy hotels do not serve. You will get a home feel while you eat at this place. I felt all the dishes to be signature dishes but it might vary depending on the individual. Dum ki chai (tea) is a must try. Instead of VFM I would say VFH (Value For Health) as they don use any synthetic food flavours or colouring.. Do try this place before it turns out to be a fancy restaurant... :) Parking is a big deal here do not go in car as there is no car parking if you are lucky enough u might get a car to park by the road side , bike can be parked by the side of the road.

It's very easy to find this hotel.. It was been a landmark for periamet.

Many knows Durbar hotel than periamet signal. It was at the junction and just adjacent to Ripon building. They have the old setup till now and serve good and tasty foods. 👍 Hats off to their service and being a trademark.

Briyani (chicken, mutton, prawn), parotya, payaa, tandoori are equally tasty.. They serve very good. Even for their tea (chayaa) and butter biscuit many comes to this place 😋

Falloda I can say they are best!! 👍very much good and 100likes 👍

Keep up the good work and serve for good food for many years . Wishes and congrats 🎉

And list of sorry they need to ask to customers list is high..
Ambience sorry you should ignore that here if you want tasty foods..

Parking another sorry as it is at the junction of the signal.

Service another another sry they are not professionals or well dressed waiters. Some time they treat you well. If it is crowded sorry I can even show their real irritating faces. 😉

Truely your decision to eat here or not 👍

Special parota and chicken roast are out of the world. My brother and myself go there whenever he visits us in chennai. My mouth is watering when I think about the parota and chicken roast curry even now.
Planning to take my family tomorrow to try out the Biriyani.

This may be a bit odd,but here goes a vegetarians take on one of the most legendary hotels in Chennai! It's a no brainer that I ordered their SPL falooda. The ambiance was rustic and the tables were too cramped near to each other for comfort. The order was served in 5m.A scoop of mango ice cream topping a melange of fresh cut fruits, dry fruits. The taste indeed was good but it wasn't out of the world.May be I got carried away with all the hype.

Packed some of their biscuits for takeaway and they were awesome.Unfortunately bun butter jam was not available.

You either love it or you aren't National Durbar material! Quintessentially Madras. Lovely ambience and quick service.

The Biryani here is my absolute favorite. Do not miss out on the Badam Kheer and Mango Milk. Their cakes look absolutely gorgeous too! Definitely VFM.

This is  a legendary place. You will love it.

I love the ambience to this restaurant its so busy and retro all together. Well you'd expect that since its right next the Chennai Central.

Run by a Muslim family for over a generation this place is all about non vegetarians, they'd chop you down if you were anything otherwise.

We had the parotta, chicken roast and the mutton pepper masala.

The parotta's were large and heavy considering they cost just ₹10.
The chicken was well soaked into the gravy and had all the right flavours but I felt the quantity was a little low.
The mutton was tender and super spicy right from the word go, and surprisingly had more quantity than the chicken.

This is joint is definitely 'soul-food' material.

Being a veggie, you can't even find a single dish for your appetite. Non vegetarians watch out for this place. But usually I will land there just for their faloodas and desserts. The maintain the same quality for years. Also in the evening they serve amazing bun butter jam and biscuit varieties. Try them along with their hot cup of chaai.

If there ever was a restaurant where I'd actually felt that I've eaten to the point where my stomach/body couldn't take in anymore, it is this.

National Durbar is situated as the first building on the left on Raja Muthaih Road, which is adjacent to the Ripon Buildings. This is without doubt the best place to dine at in Periamet, and arguably one for the "Legendary Restaurants" list of Chennai.

The hotel retains its old world charm - the wooden chairs and tables are almost antique and they still serve in white porcelain wares. Once you step into this place, the friendly waiters take over. I'm sure all the 3 that I've met are above 60, but they're as efficient as any. In fact, they do the billing so quickly, these new blokes can hardly match up to them stalwarts.

National Durbar Biriyani is really tasty and they also serve good, thick parotas. But, what really stands out are their desserts. The National Falooda, the Custard Pudding, the Badam Kheer and the China grass are all equally good. They also have Ice cream sundaes, all priced very affordably.

A family of 5 can eat a five course meal nicely and still end up paying around 1000-1200 only.

There are however, two things that people need to take note here. This is, as I've mentioned umpteen times in my review, a place from the times gone by. They still do not accept cards. Please carry cash - the nearest ATM is at least 150m away and trust me, the last thing you want to do after a sumptuous meal is take that damned walk.

Also. due to the metro work in progress, parking might be a bit of a hassle for now.

Menu: Mughlai assortment.
Environ: Set quite fashionably old, it presets a tale of yesteryear Madras
Price: Hello! Shut up and Take my money!
Service: Lightning quick
Personal Fav: Mutton Kurma

Your order probably gets delivered in 3 minutes. You spend more time ordering. With a soft texture, the mutton dishes here are quite a delicacy.
Their famous falooda is a bland sundae in a glass. Misses out variety in its ingredients. But meh, the taste is great.

The restaurant, located almost in near vicinity of the Chennai Central Railway Station, came as a relief to me and my family (who have got roots in Eastern part of India) who are not inured to having dosas and idlis or any South Indian dishes for dinner. We were to spend one more night in Chennai before moving to Puducherry the next day, and we were at a loss of where to dine, until one of our relatives came to our rescue. On his suggestion, we traveled to this food joint, which was a good 10 minutes tuk-tuk drive from our hotel. One might shudder after having a look at the Tandoori starters, but in congruity with the prices, the pieces are large enough to fill one's stomach satisfactorily; take my word for it. The Mutton Biryani obviously do not taste like the famous Hyderabadi brother, but given the condition in which we were, it was, at least, ingratiating to our taste buds. The names of the other items, especially those at the beginning, were simply unintelligible (no offense intended). An ardent Biryani lover cannot afford to miss out on such an opportunity if he/she is in Chennai.

P.S.: Pray carry hard cash as they do not accept cards.

This restaurant is one of favourite place since my childhood. I skip drinking tea outside during travel. But this place changed it. One particular day,it was too hot so I asked brother to stop vehicle to have some refreshments claiming to drink tea. My SIL was pleasantly taken back when I ordered custard pudding and Badam Kheer coz she loves such food. The quality is still the same coz I visited nearly after 3 years post corona. My Brother and SIL had their first done in experience and they loved the food. The samosa wasn't available at the time when we dined in..But do try their samosa with green chutney. Also their Bun butter jam and faloodas. Not much in photo dump from this place just a couple of items. For parking u will have to plan youself since it is a busy road next to central so plan accordingly at ur risk. 2 pudding, 1 kheer and a tea costed less than 200/- which I find budget friendly too.

It is great restaurant with quality food and reasonable pricing. I ate paratha with Mutton Roast Masala..it was really good and the quantity was also sufficient. Then I had Chicken chowmin , it was also really good. For desert we ordered Caramel pudfing 🍮 and Falooda. The caramel pudding was ok but the Falooda was really really good 👍. The sumptuous delicacy will leave you wanting for more. Overall , a really good experience.
