Tasty pongal, rava kichadi and Uzhundha vadai. Very quick service. No seating. We have stand at eat in the small space inside or have it relaxed outside.

I’ve heard about this place via twitter. After tried to have their Pongal for three times being sold out. I had it on my fourth time, man I had a good Pongal. I came to know why Pongal is selling out before 8 AM. A good Pongal is in it simplicity that’s what they serve. If you are around Santhome and come a walk around Marina you should stop for breakfast here. FYI you need to stand and eat your food as there no seating available.

Small place. Need to eat standing. Very nominal pricing. Only selected few items as in the pic. Food hot and tasty. Vada a must try. Open for a few hours in the morning. Not sure about other timings.

This little eatery is one of the best in the city for Pongal and Vadai. You need to get there early before 8.30 otherwise the Pongal sells out. The service is very quick and the owner is friendly. A must recommend for those who are visiting the area. And please don't get a car into Mandaveli Lane.

Its a small, family run traditional tiffin place, thats open 7 a.m to 10 a.m only. There is no place to sit, and we must stand outside and eat. Pongal, vada, idli was good, tasty, reasonably priced. There is no dosa or coffee though. Overall quality and price was very good.

Eating in Gomathy mess for past 2 years. The best food I have ever eaten. If they provide food 3 times a day I would be the happiest person. Praying to Lord Krishna for the owner's and employee's health and wealth. Hare Krishna.

This was a 'find' in Chennai! Freshest of breakfast served with love! Just ask and they affectionately feed to to your heart fill and where on earth would you find a place where you eat first and pay based on your words how much you have consumed! I am completely bowled by this joint and call it a little temple of ma annapurna 🙇‍♀️🙏

Ramakrishnan Anna serves the best Pongal in the entire Mylapore, the advantage is the Pongal and sambar won't get spoiled till evening inspite of chennai's scorching heat. Any food item is very good. Earlier they used to have sambar, kootu, poriyal and that too by 7.30 am. It used to save my time a lot as the items tasted like home meals and never get spoiled.but Anna stopped the meals service due to health issues. Miss his meals service. Wishing him and manni a long healthy and happy life

Excellent food but very limited menu. You have to eat your food by holding the plate on the other hand. Kai yenthi bavan style. Vada for ten rupees is excellent. Though pongal is very famous it gets over by 830am, you need to go early. You can finish your entire breakfast within 50 RS.

If there are more stars I’d probably give them that ! My husband introduced me to this place. The VenPongal here is hands down the best! It just melts in your mouth! It’s a small shack, but crowded right from 7am! Be here as early as possible in the morning, lest you’d miss the Pongal :( The rava khichdi too is very nice here.

Best Idli and vadai I've had food a very long time. I'll definitely recommend this to everyone I know. Though it's a small mess, the food is very hygienic and tasty as well. Keep up the good work. அன்னதாதா சுகி பவா

Visited this place with the family after rave reviews on Twitter. The reviews are accurate - the food is fabulous. For three, our breakfast cost 100 in total. Any other place the cost would have been 3-4 times more. Very generous and truly a service mindset. Visit and find out yourself. There are more surprises when you experience it

Had visited the place for breakfast with my friends. It's a pure vegetarian place with no seating for dining and limited food options. They serve only idly, pongal, kitchadi and vada for breakfast. People opting to dine in has to stand and have the food. Although the place is small, it is famous in the locality and it's crowded. During my visit i noticed lot of customers taking parcel and some customers visit the place after their moning walk.

Its easy to find this place. Thou Google Maps isn’t pretty precise. I tried all of thier Breakfast Menu, Idly Vada Pongal & Poori. But Pongal is the Killer Item.

Finally had a chance to taste food at one of the oldest tiffin places in Chennai – Gomathi Mess in Mandaveli. I’ve been hearing about this place from a few foodie friends and decided to try it today, for breakfast. I was surprised to see a small joint without a nameboard, effortlessly dishing out awesome Pongal, Vadais, Idlis, and Pooris to a steady crowd. We were there around 7:15 AM, and being a Sunday morning, it was crowded, quite as expected. The location is a little tricky to explain, hope this google pointer helps !

If someone visits you, and you want to show them a part of Chennai's culture, this restaurant should be one of your top picks.
Incredibly small, few plastic seats, banana leaves and threads used for packing, very moderate serving sizes, inconsistent homely food, run by a small family and very affordable ; characterize this eatery.
No signage, nothing. They could be closed on odd days in case the promoters have other work to take care of, you will never know what food is going to be served on that day and once the prepared portion is over for the time slot, they don't refill the food. But this is the uniqueness of the place.

The first time I had Pongal here, I felt like I tasted the best there is. Piping hot, loaded with ghee and it was melting in my mouth. In the next 2 weeks, I visited them 4 times.
But the same Pongal tasted slightly different on each of the occasions.
Their Vadas are small and well made. The coffee didn't impress much.
The Onion chutney is incredible. The Sambar is fine.

Overall, look forward to a very new hardcore Mylapore style culinary experience. Do not miss the Pongal, even at 80% perfection, it's still one of the best in the city.

V were looking for a quick bite & hubby hd been mentioning & raving abt this place for a long time so b decided to head here. We went there for tiffin... The bonda were hot , Crispy & tasted really good with sambar & chutney. The Masala dosas, podi dosas were very homely. The Adai did not match my taste buds but overall good experience. u cannot compare it with any hotel as they serve very homely food... Good on stomach.

Just a walking distance from the Mylapore Tank if you are thinking about good food. They have been around for a decade btw. Hidden behind Thandu mariamman temple on Mandaveli's Bazaar St.

Soft Bondas,
Pongal with a great taste and
flavour of ghee, Arisi Upma in the evenings,

Idli, Vadai etc. in the morning
and to top it off with a Coffee.

Pretty inexpensive and extremely good tasting.
You can have something to fill your stomach that a simple dosa would cost you at HSB. :-)

Not open on weekends in the evening.
But open all days in the morning.

Good place to have breakfast. The pongal served here has amazing texture and has a good fragrance of ghee. The medu vadai are also amazing . Although I didn't like the idli's that much. The coffee was good . Overall a Good place to have breakfast at an affordable price

Some places are good but this place is more than good! We could call it a hidden gem of mylapore - mandaveli area, it really is. Even if you're standing right across this mess, you wouldn't be able to spot it. But thanks to the people who helped us out. It is a well known joint there.
It's a really small mess where ambience isn't even a thing. Like hello? you come here to eat and leave. Simple enough! Parking is on the road, so if you find a spot, good for you.
It's a mess run by a small family. They open for a few hours in the morning and between 4.00 pm to 8.00 pm in the evening. They serve an array of tiffin items - idly, vada, bonda, ghee pongal, poori, coffee and tea. Normally I don't like pongal but I'm some how I'm more than happy we decided to have ghee pongal here. It was melt in your mouth delicious, literally. They serve two types of chutney and sambar all in one place, but well that's something I liked. The bonda was served hot and crispy.
The fresh filter coffee was something I was raving to everyone about. The aroma itself got me.
All of this came upto 80 bucks. Yes, it is true. I would suggest this place to all south indian food lovers, but see to the timings.

After hearing a lot about this place we went for breakfast here. Pongal with cchutney was really good. Except that had idli, vada and karabath or rava kitchdi. Not recommended at all. Sambar was not good. Jus for Pongal lovers yes plz go n have.

After dis-appointing couple of times, as they were closed, today caught with Gomathi Mess . So a bit of expectation. Visited them around 4.15pm, as i had skipped lunch owing to heavy BF had pongal, sambar vada & a bonda. All are ok only. Total damage was 62.
Food For Thought
Least expected place for my 100th review and a fact that i was not even aware that such a place existed around Mylapore where i was brought up all my life. Such a shame.

A typical mylapore Tam Bram mess run by two senior citizens serving home cooked food. This place is very difficult to find as there are no sign boards.

Went in the evening and had some sambhar vada and pongal. Im not a fan of sambhar vada but this one was phenomenal. Never had such soft and soaked in sambhar vada's in my life. Too good. Pongal was very homely and very tasty.

Nothing much as ambiance as it is a mess. Just a place to eat and go. Simply good.

I have been there a number of time... . The best Pongal in World. I love the ambiance the service and the food. You cant stop eating Pongal and Bonda. Chapathi side dish and Kitchadi is yummy and awesome. One thing i love the most --> Try Pongal and Hot Bonda and Vada. At last You will have Coffee (Chennai Special)...I get completely satisfied when i go there and its value for money.
