Review Matsya - Chennai (Madras)

Karthik Krishnamoorthy
Near Adyar bus stand and Adyar flyover. Ambience is good. The restaurant was very crowded on the weekend. We were the first ones to enter in the evening at 7 p.m. Both buffet and à la carte options are available. One of the starters (pull apart garlic bread)we ordered was complete let down but the rest of the food we ordered was excellent. Most people queued for the buffet option.

Want to have a perfect date on Roof top garden restaurant with rain drizzling, Time to go for Mathsya Adayar. Use lift or the stylish stairs to reach rooftops. Don’t settle indoors. But indoor is a great place for buffet.
Soul On Fire: Travel and Adventure
The place is located near the main junction of Adyar and same complex as Mcdonald. The place was crowded and most of the people were there for buffet. We chose Ala Carte and went with both Indian and Continental. Taste was good and food was served quickly even with the crowded place. Portion justify the prices. The ambiance is good and is good place for lunch or dinner with family and friends

The starters were really very good especially the mushroom cappuccino, cheese balls and pizza. I was disappointed with the main course The 'kaju matar makhana' was very sweet and seemed like a dessert (payasam to be exact), navaratan pulao was again disappointing but the bisi bele bath, multigrain dosa and pineapple raita were amazing. Coming to dessert brownie was very bad, but the mathsya special faluda and apple pie with icecream were worth a try. Now coming to the ambience, too much noise (shouldn't be considered as fine dine), one of the lights was flickering which was very disturbing. And there is NO VALET parking, i don't know why everywhere it shows that it has.
Vignesh Balasubramanian
The best vegetarian buffet spread you can find in Chennai. Always a pleasure to dine here. Accomodates a good number of people at a time. Maybe crowded during weekends as expected elsewhere. Valet and basement parking available.

It's on the first floor.. Lift facility is available. Valet parking is also available. Food was really good neither hot nor blant..just right for older and younger children.. It's pure vegetarian restaurant.. The staffs are cordial.. Buffet for Rs. 500/-per person was just too good. There were lots of varieties.. Rice.. Biriyani.. Noodles. Rotis with varied side dishes and regular south Indian menu.. 4 varieties of deserts and a drink.. Loved it

A vegetarian restaurant with good varieties on the menu. They have a lunch buffet on weekdays & weekends and breakfast buffet only on weekends, which costs 225 rupees net. Breakfast Spread was limited, food quality and taste were good. The restaurant is located on the floor, they have a lift facility

It was a pleasure dining at Mathysa Restaurant, Adyar Branch. I must say it was an exceptional experience from start to finish. From the moment I walked through the doors, I was greeted with warm hospitality and a delightful ambiance that set the stage for a memorable culinary journey. First and foremost, the food at Mathysa is simply outstanding. The menu offers a wide range of delectable dishes, blending traditional flavors with modern culinary techniques. Each dish was thoughtfully crafted and presented with finesse. The flavors were balanced, and the ingredients used were fresh and of the highest quality. I particularly enjoyed their signature dishes, such as the flavorful Thattu Idly, Sapthaswara Oothamppam and Raja Raja Cholan Dosai. The chef's expertise was evident in every bite, leaving me craving for more. It doesn't stop only with south Indian items. Their expertise extended to north Indian starters such as Paneer Tikka and Corn Tiki. I ended up with a super strong coffee which was good too. I can't rank them as top to bottom as each dish was good in its own way. The service is top-notch. The staff members are attentive, friendly, and well-versed in the menu. They patiently provided excellent recommendations, ensuring that my dining experience was tailored to my preferences. The service was prompt, and my needs were always anticipated without being intrusive. The restaurant's ambiance is stylish and inviting, with tasteful decor that creates a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. The seating arrangements provide both privacy and a sense of openness, allowing for an intimate meal or a gathering with friends and family. The lighting and music complement the dining experience perfectly, creating a pleasant and soothing ambiance. Furthermore, they pay meticulous attention to hygiene and cleanliness. The restaurant maintains impeccable standards of cleanliness and adheres to all necessary safety protocols, ensuring a safe and hygienic environment for diners. Overall, Mathysa Restaurant, Adyar Branch is a gem for every VEGETARIAN food lover that deserves every bit of praise. The combination of exquisite food, impeccable service, and inviting ambiance makes it a must-visit for anyone seeking an exceptional dining experience. Whether you're a local or a visitor, this is a culinary destination that promises to delight your taste buds and leave you with cherished memories. I highly recommend this restaurant to all food enthusiasts looking for a gastronomic adventure in Chennai.

A splurge of a buffet of pure vegetarian breakfast. Each and every dish was fantastic, the service was excellent, the ambience calm.

Just went for a buffet lunch over a weekend with family. Starters were all delicious. Main course is limited with normal south indian meals. Deserts were good. Visited again and enjoyed the buffet again. What quiet disturbing was, a group of ladies, might be friends, who joined there for lunch wad making horrible noise without the concern of fellow people who have come to enjoy a peaceful lunch. We strongly condemn this attitude as this is not a party hall for meeting. Thats a dining area. I preferably bring this to the notice of the manager of the restaurant.

Saturday buffet lunch with 5 friends. Very big spread. Food was tasty and hygienic. Though the place was crowded, we spent two hours and were not hassled. 650 bucks per head was very reasonable. Good vegetarian place, value for money with a nice ambience and good service
Aparna Tiwari (The wandering foodie)
Perfect place for buffet South Indian lunch for vegetarian . They had good spread of South Indian , North Indian spread , pasta and Chinese spread in same buffet. North Indian spread can be skipped but each and every item other then that was delicious . Pasta was too good and cream of mushroom soup was perfectly creamy . Had decent options of desert in which all the Indian dessert were too good. Great place for team or group lunch . Prices are also quite reasonable .

Great buffet and fabulous taste. We hosted 25+ people for dinner and that too on a Saturday. They were our best option and it turned out to be a good decision. Good veg varieties and people had great time.
Arun Rajendiran
We went for lunch and they allowed us to take both alacarte and buffet and sit together with a humble request not to share. The buffet spread was good. They had live dosa and bhel. Eggless pastries for dessert.
Akilan Chandrasekaran
Vegetarian buffet paradise!!! This could be one of the best vegetarian buffet places in chennai. Wide varieties of dishes, from starters till desserts. Most of the dishes were great. The price is decent, the service is good and there is valet parking. Since this is at a prime location one should be visiting early to avoid the crowd. Overall enjoyed the indulgence.

Yummy n tasty food.. service was quick.. but during weekends crowd will be more also the noise.. it's like having food in fair not in restaurant..

I have attended one 50th wedding anniversary, the hall had about 200 people with ease. Cool Ac effect, we had food which was good and tasty.

Roasted pumpkin soup
Pull apart garlic bread
Chicago style cheesey fries
Surkh lal paneer tikka
Dahi ke Dooley
Apple mint mojito
Paneer lababdar
Chocolate brownie with Ice-cream
Brownie sundae
The soup had a strong flavour it had a supremely creamy texture and is highly recommended. The pull apart bread could use a little bit more work but the cheesey fries is a good starter. Dahi ki Dooley had an oily bread top but the dahi filling was out of the world. The paneer tikka was another great dish it was soft and succulent. Paneer lababdar was a little bit of a let down for me for I was hoping for a more richer flavour. The mojito was good drink and went well along with most the paneer and dahi ku sooley. The desserts were good.

It's burned how can u send it..as a order.. shame on you people even it's not good not a problem...you sent us a burned food.

we 8 had alacarte lunch items which we enjoyed except one item curd rice not worth even a rupee. Service was good.
Bhuvaneswari Vidyasankar
Service was nice Hemanthur
Balachandar Suresh
Overly priced. And horrible service by staff. When politely enquired about food getting delayed, the server casually says it is a huge crowd and that we should've opted for buffet. We should be waiting if it's Ala Carte. They treat those who opt for Ala Carte as second class citizens. This is despite us waiting for 20 minutes for plain dosai. This is the horrible attitude of the staff out there. For the price we pay, and the boast of the restaurant saying it's fine dining, this experience is truly horrible.
RAM KUMAR M
Poor coordination between waiters. Vegetarian lunch buffet not deserve the money.Soup waste. Sambar & Biryani was ok.rest were subnormal.
Sainath S.R
Apart from the ambience and pizzas everything else horrible and overpriced. I don’t mind the price if he food is good. Butter naan had no butter . Dosa was average and cold . Sambar tastelessness. Have been here 5 times and found only the dosa and deserts in buffet to be decent . Footfall wasn’t even a fourth of what was there 6 months back . We wanted to have parotas and poori and both were unavailable at such a big restaurant. Staff hardly respond and service is very slow. Paneer was decent to give credit where due. Even at the breakfast and lunch most items Buffetts half the menu was hard and withered . Seriously how is this a top rated vegetarian place in Chennai or is it only this branch that's mismanaged?
Please provide more variety in alacarte and fresh well cooked items in buffet . Will visit again then

From 4ft Rocket Dosa, Karnataka's famous Kadubu Idli and BisiBelaBath, Mexican Enchiladas, Chinese Lotus stem starters and finishing off with a delicious rose milk, we truly had a multi cultural dinner in the third branch of @mathsyarestaurant in Adyar (others being in Egmore and T. Nagar).
Priced at 400 their speciality 4ft Dosa could easily serve 5-6 ppl with large portions.
Their taste and quality is exactly the same as their other branches and would definitely recommend going for a family outing

Mathsya is a popular restaurant in Chennai for South Indian, particularly Udupi style food. I had visited their Pondy Bazaar outlet multiple times. Now they have two more branches. Got to visit their Adyar outlet recently and this is the review.

Mathsya is a pure vegetarian restaurant, serving South Indian, North Indian dishes, as well as a few Chinese and Mexican items. But I decided to stay focused on the Udupi items they have on offer.

We were given a welcome drink- rose milk. Ordered Guliyappa (aka Paniyaram in tamil)- a dish where batter used to make dosa/idli is baked in the shape of small balls on a specialized tawa. Infused with some vegetables for added taste and served with chutney, sambar, the first item gave good start to the evening. Friends ordered some starters- lotus stem and fried corn. These were good, but I liked crispy corn served at Coal Barbeque and few other restaurants a bit better.

Neer dose is another coastal Karnataka special dish you should try. It is a thin layer of dosa served with coconut flakes and jiggery. Serving this in sets of 2 would have been better in my opinion.

Next ordered a plate of Kadubu. Kadubu is coastal Karnataka dish where idle batter is cooked in a cup made of jackfruit leaves. I was expecting the same, full sized Kadubu in jackfruit leaves. But we were served smaller sized ones- no difference in taste but missed the aroma of jackfruit leaves. Upon checking with management later we were told about the operational challenges- non-availability of jackfruit leaves and time it takes to cook during busy evenings.

While we waited for Rocket Masala Dosa, a four foot long Masala dosa, next order of Bisibee bath arrived. Taste was authentic. I had buttermilk for company while I savored on the bisibele bath (sambar rice). Rocket Masala dosa now arrived, drawing attention of everyone around, thanks to its long size. Masala is not stuffed inside like a conventional masala dosa but is supplied separately in bowls.

Wanted to try Mangalore Bonda and Thatte idli but didn’t have any space left. The items are reasonably priced. One Udupi item I felt missing in the menu was Patrode.

Overall Mathsya Adyar is a great vegetarian outlet in Adyar area to visit with family, for authentic south Indian food. They also have great collection of North Indian, Chinese dishes. There will be fair bit of waiting on weekends.

Today, I along with my friends Karthik Murali & Shrinidhi Hande visited Mathsya Restaurant, Adyar for dinner.

This is a pure veg restaurant. Being a pure veg myself(only in Saturday), I couldn’t have asked for a better restaurant. This brand hails from Udupi, Karnataka and is known for their delicacies like bisi-belle bath, neer dosa, kadubu & Guliappa to name a few.

We started with a welcome drink - rose milk. Post that we moved on to Tomato soup. My friends felt it was too sweet. For me, it was ok.

Then we ordered a dish made of corn. It was crispy and spicy. Liked the taste very much. Then it was Lotus Stem soaked in Chilli & Lemon. It tasted unique.

Then we ordered Neer Dosa. You shouldn’t miss it if you’re looking for Udupi delicacies apart from bisibeke bath, guliappa & kadubu. Kadubu is usually served in jack fruit leaf but since the leaf is a rarity and it takes time to prepare, we got it in a normal way. So, don’t be disappointed, if you were expecting that style. The taste is intact.

The highlight was the rocket Dosa. It is a 4 feet Dosa which could easily satisfy the hunger of 4 people. It comes with lot of coconut & mint Chutney, Sambar, potato masala.

We ended our dinner with a sweet lime juice. Shrinidhi alone ordered butter milk.

Highly recommended. Be early because it is jam packed. You may have to wait in the queue before you get your turn but it is worth your time and money.
Kartik Mattoo
Nice place for quick bites and amazing food and drinks ( non alcoholic ofcourse ) dosas were crisp and chutneys at the right spice levels . The mangalore bondas are my favorite. My daughter loved it here because the spice levels were favorable to her American taste buds .. my son loved the lemonades and soft idlis .. good ambience .. not overly crowded and Chennai you make such amazing filter coffees

We were happy to see Mathsya opening in Adyar, closer to home than T Nagar.
We had the Madras Thali, which was tasty and reasonably priced. Well worth a visit for good food, good ambiance and good service.

Very average food quality and taste with huge price tag!!!

If you're looking for a vegetarian place to dine with your family this place is a must try. My favourite among all their dishes is mysore bonda. It's the softest bonda I have ever had.
Although, service can be a little better.

Wanted to visit mathsya for a long time and had an opportunity to go there after shopping. Loved the food there, the restaurant is spacious but the service is slow.
Abdul Rahaman
The place was very spacious compared to other outlets. It was perfect the way I preferred, not very spicy but the pricing was too high.

One of the unmissable restaurants in Chennai.

Ghee Roast Dosa really tastes GREAT!

Choosin buffet is the BEST idea and it is worth the money.

The only reason for the two stars is the bad behaviour of a waiter here. Didn't even bother asking his name. From the minute we entered, he reminded us thrice that they had buffet option, we politely told him that we wanted to go a la carte.
And ever since then he choose to treat us as less important than the other customers.
This was extremely disheartening!
Amit Tripathi
Brilliant food. The buffet has a wonderful spread. And the staff is super courteous. Must visit whenever u r in Chennai.
Sruti
Pathetic packaging. Literally my box had just the boiled pasta and the sauce was spilt all over the cover. The delivery guy delivered it as is. The box was not even sealed fully for an item with liquid ingredients.

Best place for vegetarian food In the city. Have always enjoyed my experience here.

Loved every bit & very spacious. Looking for more options next time.

They have wide range of vegetarian food , the ambience is great for family crowd and friends. The options are limitless and have the good taste in the buffet system. I would recommend the desserts and rice items as they very tasty. Personally the wraps my favorite. The staff is well trained and friendly to the customers. Very nice experience for me because I don't eat vegetarian food that much ,and had a great time here.
Ayush Panda
A pretty decent buffet.
I went to this place a couple of days ago. The ambience and food were both pretty average. I think they can work more on the recipes and try to make the food better. The lotus stem, quesadilla, mojitos, and tacos were pretty lovely. They are the things k recommend you to have. I felt the place was slightly overpriced and they could offer better for the rates. The staff were very polite and the service was amazing. The desserts could have been better as well.

For a change thought of going for a veggie delight. I happened to be at Adayar and was recommended Mathsaya. The hype was so much but did the reality match the hype...?A BIG NO. not even close. There was not even a single dish in the buffet spread that I could say was worth the money. Very disappointed. I guess the restaurant is packed just because of the hype. In my experience this restaurant gets 2/5. Will I recommend my friends? NO. The food is not worth for Rs.472/- sorry to say this "MATHSAYA...Kaasu waste'a pochuya"

Mathsya has always been my go-to for family dinners , celebrations or a filling lunch meal . They have covered almost every choice in vegetarian dishes and have made sure they make it delicious . A family friendly place with neat and quick service and decent pricing. The food is delicious and will make u wanna keep coming regularly. My personal favourites were virtuous nutella waffle , quesadillas , veg nuggets , tandoor starters . ❤🤤

This was our fifth visit here. Though Everytime the food was great with good taste this time it was hopeless and pathetic. We ordered idiyappam and it was served chill and hard. When asked the reason the service person told us they will reheat and give but not the reason. The dosa was not crisp and cold again. One dish that was good was rasa vada but again the portion size was reduced. Thatu idly stood out okay.

And the service was just useless. They were for sure was not able to manage the customer crowd. I could see almost every other table customers were yelling back for the taste of the food.

Not worth your time or money, cause based on our previous visits here we went to the restaurant as a group of 12 people. But was hopeless

First of all the service experience at mathsya level is not up to the mark. We entered the outlet at 10am and they said buffet was closed for breakfast. Ordered for a poori bhaji. After 20 mins I got 4 flat hard pooris ( can't name them pooris ) when checked with them they took it back and then in about 15mins they came back with another plate with 2small puffed pooris and other 2 flattened hard pooris. Didn't say just left it and walked away paying my bill

People managing the restaurant have no idea how to manage crowd. They’re just so irresponsible. Need a big revamp on people to manage the restaurant well.

It is a great place to have dinner in Adyar. I have been to their branch in Egmore as well. I liked almost every dish that I was served there...

AC was not at all working ...we asked starters for one more serve...but it never came.... No dedicated staffs for tables..

The quality of food was not at all good. Not worth the money at all. The desserts were stale and the main course didn't have any taste. Expected better

There is a reason why it’s difficult to be jack of all trade. Reason is mastering each skill is difficult .. This applies to Matsya . They have Buffett and a big menu but the quality is not desirable . One example of that is their tomato soup . It’s simply ketch up mixed with hot water .. please focus on quality products for your customer .
Senthil Kumar
Yesterday we had dinner at this restaurant . the ambience and also the service was excellent. The buffet spread is also very good , the staff overall were very helpful . I recommend this place and also plan to visit again soon
Janani Balasubramanian
The food is below average. Cleanliness is pathetic. They don't clean the mat and they place spoons on soiled mat. Requested waiter to clean it. He turned and put it back. Ordered paneer dosa. Below average.
Nikhita
If you’re in the mood for some stomach filling naans straight from the tandoor and gravy dishes to go with, this is the place to be.

I had a mixed naan and tandoori roti basket with some Malai kofta and Paneer butter masala. The gravy dishes were quite fresh and had an authentic North Indian taste.

The service of the restaurant was quite good and the staff was courteous.
Arulanand
Speaking of the ambience it fits in right for a family outing. The menu is quite interesting with different varieties of dosas.
I opted for buffet, the range of dishes were creative and different but I also felt it was gross injustice to not include the different varieties of dosas they offer in the buffet menu. And The live counter was a bit uninspiring. But however I really liked a few dishes in the buffet menu , like the corn biriyani and coconut halwa.

On a whole I would say it's not a wise option to pick the buffet here. But their normal menu looks great.
Prakash Singh Dhami
Amazing restaurant 🤩incredible food i want dine again staff is friendly 😊😊 its is one of the best restaurant in that place and specially for vegetarians😋

Great place for South Indian food with decent ambience, they have North Indian food as well. Good service , help full staff specially the manager I forget his name but much appreciated that guy who help us choose the delicious dishes from the menu.
Thanks to Mathsya team sure we will come again

The food was really nice. The buffet is totally worth the price !! A decent spread for the price, but all items were really palatable. We enjoyed the dinner completely. Value for money

Good place to visit with kids.. crowd management could be improved..

Taste of food and spread is good. Tried the ala carte only. Wish to try the buffet soon

I have been there on last Saturday with my family. It was a busy evening but somehow one of your manager Vivek Ojha managed a good table with the nice view for us. Definitely one of the best restaurant in the town with great variety of food, excellent hospitality and of course value for money as well. Kudos to Vivek and his team.
Will definitely back for their fantastic dinner buffet options. Cheers

I didn't want to be the one to give out a one star rating to a restaurant. A vegetarian restaurant, that too. Pressing on that factor because I'm one. However, the reason I am doing so is because of the careless attitude and the service of the waiters. The restaurant is very spacious and looks very shiny and since this is a new property - the furniture and the ambience look very bright and clean. I wish I could say the same about the behaviour of the waiters. The buffet was charged at 500 per head but the food was very cold and very dry and it looked as if we went there to eat a free meal. I'd rather have had my own food cooked at home.

I decided to make a fuss out of it because it was not something we expected to eat. So we had the manager called and told him about it. They had our bill discounted. I hope you guys serve us hot and fresh food as long you're restaurant is still operational. Request the team to keep check on the same.

Hope to have a better meal experience next time.

One of the best place to enjoy with multi
vegetarian cuisine.
Recommended for all who loves vegetarian
Staff are very decent and polite with great service.
Went for breakfast on Sunday morning at 10:25 the buffet I was told is closed and when we wanted to order the so called supervisor told us breakfast is closed and only dosas are available and his tone was rude and not he seemed to have no interest to even tell us anything
Surprising to see a udupi restaurant staff so inhospitable

Average food and service was pretty slow even when there wasn't any crowd.
Disappointed with the first time visit to a Mathsya!! Better to try other options in and around the place.
I was here yesterday. The staff was very unresponsive. The chat guy despite asking about chat was standing at the live counter and didn't come to serve chat until his manager asked him to. Initially I was served soup with raw cabbages which I had to get replaced. The supervisors though are looking at you straight when you call them won't come to you. The spread was also very minimal and most of the items were cold. Overall another overrated place.

I am a usual at the Egmore outlet and it's one of my favorites in Chennai.

The Adyar one leaves a lot to be desired though. The staff were clueless when we came in at 7 pm and did not know our reservation. We were then shown a table.

The rasam vada was good. All the dosas were a let down. The rava dosa was badly cooked while the rest were dry. Egmore branch serves amazing dosa btw. Mexican wrap was good, pasta was undercooked.

On top of this, we were seated near the live counters and the smoke from the cooking led everyone to cough. AC wasnt working properly as well.

Probably my last time at the Adyar branch.

Even before you enter the dine in area of the restaurant, start to rejoice the walk up the stairs because it is an experience in itself. The ambience at Mathsya looks elegant and refreshing, pretty cool job at the decor. As we move to the climax, the softy panneer tikka literally melts and the crispy baby corn stays true to its name. Pizza and pasta are thoughtful additions to the otherwise standard main course menu on offer, not to forget the 3 foot bullet dosa for the insta maniacs and grabs many an eyeball. The service is OK. The gulab jamun shake at the end is probably the perfect ending to what is a time well spent with family over a weekend

A very Average Buffet!!

The sundays are really really crowded here. Unknowingly zeroed in on this location on a very special occasion. We booked the 2 clock slot. Never be here on a sunday,it is damn crowded. The starters were very bad, not hot and a very poor selection of menu. The taste was also average. The naan and roti were very dry. None of the items tasted good. Was deeply disappointed. The waiters and supervisors ran like a headless chicken completely clueless. Will never visit again.

Mathsya is an absolute delight, probably one of the best Vegetarian restaurant in the city. I tried - Golliyapam, Ghee Roast, Rasam-Vada and Arrabiata Pasta. All the north and south indian meals are cooked in Ghee (give a very fresh feeling while eating). The ambience is very rich, prices are very very moderate.

Decent food, quick service, soothing ambience with resemblance to fine dining experience in a pocket friendly manner. Nice buffet and combo meals.
