Review Chinatown - Chennai (Madras)

Cookiemonster_329
The restaurant is located in a sketchy building. I had to go up an old/sketchy set of stairs in a recognizably old building. When I got to the restaurant on the 3rd floor, the atmosphere was nice showing authentic Chinese decoration and music. The food was good and priced reasonably. Service was nice and fast.

Chinatown has shifted from its old location above Copper Chimney towards the left side of the building. The new place holds the same ambience, chairs, tables, etc., just like the one earlier. We ordered Pepper garlic prawns, Schezwan chicken and Basil fried rice. These are recipes for a spicy affair. Taste was good, portion size okay. Prices a bit on the higher side. They charge 10% service charge (optional). Parking only in the side roads. I did not see the buffet which was there earlier. Overall I would say the food ordered was tasty.

Most amazing Chinese food I had in a long time. Service was prompt and the food was served very fresh. Good choice of veg and non veg. The manager gave good suggestions for vegetarian. The dessert was really good. Good AC. Bathrooms were clean. Parking available. Overall a very good experience. Surely coming back soon.

Love the Crab soup, steam fish and a must have is the fried ice cream is amazing!!! Coke here has no gas, nutty chocolate is not cold and not nice. Enthusiastic, friendly, courteous manager that helps suggest food who saves you time.

I'm not quite sure why this restaurant deserves anything less than 5 stars. We went for dinner with a 4 month old on a Sunday night and we called ahead to ensure there was no waiting time and the manager was kind enough to reserve a table for us in spite of the crowd. We ordered chili lime coriander soup, crispy fried veggies and szechuan veg fried rice, all of them were top notch and we enjoyed the food to the last bite. I wish I had known about this restaurant earlier! Amazing food, good service and ambience. Overall, a Much underrated and a highly recommended restaurant ❤️

The food was so good and tasty. I personally loved the Lotus stem and it was incredible. Along with it, the Yuang chow fried rice was on the top level and flavourful. I loved their service very much and the manager is also kind enough. Overall, this hotel is worth visiting.
Suvra Saha
We ordered Chilli chicken through Zomato. Quality, quantity and taste, everything was perfect.

China Town has a very nice ambience. The staff were very courteous and they ensured the timing of food was perfect. They waited till we finished each course before serving hot the next one. While the taste and food was good the prices are slightly higher. Also, the service charge of 10% is too exorbitant. Typical restaurants charge between 2 to 5%. While you can still request the restaurant to remove it and tip accordingly but as a default mechanism 10% is on the higher side. Also the ground floor and paths leading to the restaurant are not very clean. This needs significant improvement.

The best Chinese restaurant I ever visited in Chennai. The taste is yummy and awesome. Must try place if your Noodles fan. Overall best restaurant to visit. Kudos to the Chefs for bringing the taste.
Pragadeesh Kannan
Food was incredibly good. The Manchow soup was great too with them providing crispy noodles as extra unlimited too. Starters : Lotus stem was outstanding Main course : the Yuang chow fried rice was packed with flavours. Their service is too good with them taking care of every single part. The manager is a pleasant guy. Also, do not worry about parking. They provide parking help and can take care of it. It will be the last of your concerns. Overall, a worthy visit. A place that’s calm and mild :)

Hello foodies, let me review china town😋
So first we had shangsi crab soup, which was very delicious with more crab meat and mild spicy. So I would like to give 5

Dim sum(pan fried) chicken- ohhh perfect fried as well as, well cooked, obviously 5😛

Chilly beef- as the word goes, it’s spic, juicy ofcourse tasty. No other go have to give 5

Finally- schezwan chicken chopsuey, mouth watery, crispy saucy noodles- 5 rating

Quality- maintaining the quality for past 10 years. Great job chef👌🏻

Price- thank you Zomato for the offer and yes it’s worth for money.
Sanchaya Parthibhan
Food was a complete let down.. except for the chicken soup , we didn’t like any dish. Mainly because the food that was served (chicken , lamb , duck , prawns ) was not fresh. Meat was frozen and hard to bite.

Staffs are courteous. Nothing to rave about.
Priyanka Doddapaneni
Yummy food and great decor. Nothing else to it. Great value for money for great tasting food. They've always maintained their high standards and their revised menu is exciting as well. It's one of our go-to options for Chinese and always will be.

Visiting the place after their renovation. Loved their food. Tasty as always! Friendly staff!! But my favourite part of the dine was the dessert. Had icecream with litchi. The icecream was outta the world. When enquired they said it was vanilla.. but I’m pretty sure they add a secret ingredient.

Good place for authentic chinese in great value for money at cathedeal road area
Staffs are good. However excess rush makes things very slow.

Food 4.5 /5

Ambiance 5/5

It’s an traditional Chinese restro and it’s been there for long time.

We have ordered Pan fried chicken noodles 380rs and Singaporian chopsey 360rs.

Pan fried noodles is really awesome with the mix equal amount of veggies ( baby corn ,broccoli, carrot etc) and chicken pieces.

Singaporian chopsey is kind of deep fried noodles with gravy to be mixed tasted good.
Devdhar Nayak
I have to give this place credit for such amazing Chinese food. Dumplings were out of the world.
Soft, delicate and steamy, and dipping sauce was awesome. Casual amabience and well decorated.
Definitely worth the money.
Deepika Mallyk
Fish sizzler, clear fish soup and prawn soup are the best. The items taste really good. In the deserts don't forget to have caramel custard. The drink menu can be expanded. I suggest the restaurant to not bill service charges.
MOHINI ROHIT
China town is the one of the best restaurant. I love the food very much it tastes good and very hygienic. It's very silent and the staff is very friendly.
Rohit Nair
It's a good and friendly place. Recommend for family weekend get together for lunch or dinner.
Sunday there is no buffet. Try sizzler and special fried icecream

We recently visited this place along with my chinese friends Mr. Kevin and Mr. Xim, Kevin visiting this place after ten years, he identified Mr. Ravi RM. We are happy to rewind 2008. Wow wonderful place for dinner.. best chinese food we had.. Kevin endorsed the taste and price not changed much compare to 2008. Thanks Ravi.

Phuket Fish - Wooooww it was ... So soft, crispy and melting in mouth with perfect spicy (5/5 for this)

Suimai - Chicken Dimsum were also really soft and tasty

Ambience is clean and good place to sit and talk with someone (Business meetings or Date with Your parter)

Stafff are really friendly and helpful in choosing what you want

Location - It was slightly tough to find the place as it is located slightly inside the lane (Narrow and unclean pathway)
Karthik Haridoss
Absolutely amazing food everytime. They don't offer buffets like before but still worth every penny. Interiors are OK. Overall, one of the best Chinese restaurants around.
Vikram
Best ever Chinese restaurant in town.. My favourite restaurant since 2017.. Good ambience with friendly staffs.. Dishes which must try is Phuket fish, Chilly crab..
China Town is a ageing restaurant but the quality food and taste they give has kept them in competition. Im a big fan Indian Chinese food and this restaurant was simply superb and my expectations were fulfilled. Ordered chilly garlic chicken fried rice , hakka noodles, crispy chilly and hakka chicken gravy. All the items were superb it was perfectly cooked great flavour and the chicken was so soft and tasty. Definitely a must visit place will be back again soon.

Food 5.0
Ambience 4.5
Service 5.0

This place has been around for a very long time and it does live up to the expectation to an extent. I was hoping to have something a little more authentically Asian, but most dishes I tried were very indochinese. The standout dish was the honey garlic chicken for me, it was sweet, delicious and had that Asian taste to it. We also tried the chicken sizzler which is quite a visual pleasure. Manchow soup is worthy a try. Pepper prawns and egg fried rice were only average.
Ajay
Getting to this place was quite challenging 😂
It's located at the third floor of the building.

The ambience is pretty neat, well maintained place with staffs who have adequate knowledge about the menu. There were somewereging Chinese lanterns, dim lights, background Chinese music it all gave me some feels like I've landed in China or something.

Coming to the food we had ordered so many items, as I'm vegetarian I'm gonna give detailed review about what I did eat, and opinions of my friends about what I couldn't (NV dishes).

We had 7 appetizers in total from Mahlak crispy tofu, Vegetable & chicken fried wontons, Taichin chicken, Five spiced prawn, and Pan fried chicken dumplings.
🔸Tofus were outstanding. So crispy and sharp to the point, they were minced into little pieces and sauteed well in the mahlak sauce. So the flavour, aroma everything was so great.
Wontons were totally let down. I've been wanting to have them for a while now, as soon as I saw it on menu I ordered it without any hesitation and left with so regret, the stuffings were so little and it. No veggies and such small amount of noodles was stuffed inside. Really disappointed with that dish.
🔸Almost all the dishes were excellent, according to them, especially, the prawn. Again, chicken wontons were let down as well. Pan fried chicken dumplings was okayish, and the dip wasn't that great.

For main courses, we had chef's special basil fried rice, spicy crab fried rice, and beef cooked in hunan sauce.
🔸Damn right they named it chef's special basil fried rice. It was really special, one of the best I've had. It wasn't even schezwan yet it was so spicy than it. It was scrumptious, and I had the whole rice without any gravies or main dish, it was that amazing.
🔸Spicy meat crab fried rice was soo good too, according to them. They loved the meat pieces of crabs that were in bits and pieces all over the dish. They loved the beef too, told it wasn't that chewy and yet crispy, and that the hunan sauce added so much flavour to it.

Decided to grab a dessert for each, ordered caramelized pineapple with ice-cream, sizzling brownie, coconut dimsum with icecream, and fried ice cream.

Even though all the desserts were so lavish they were all accompanied with vanilla ice-cream, except, for brownie ofcourse. The standout desserts out of them were coconut dimsums, and fried ice-cream. They both were toothsome and extremely pleasing. Especially, in coconut dimsum they stuffed it with coconut pudding, it was so satisfying. Absolutely loved it.

If it were only upto vegetarian dishes I've had, I'd give a 3/5 ratings. But, because how other my friends enjoyed the food, I gave 4/5.

Would I visit here again? I don't know, may be.

Would I recommend it to others? Sure.
Deepak Bhimeshwar
Awesome place for chinese food in Chennai,I ordered chicken noodles and fish with hoisin sause. The fish was melting in my mouth, I didn't need teeth to bite. The deserts are actually good,I tried caramel pudding and it was tasty.
Nice ambiance and good service. I would recommend this place if u are craving for chinese food.
Excellent food. The Singapore chilli prawns is to die for. Have been going to them for years. Polite, observant and friendly staff too. Keep up the great work.

Mind blown!!!Those are the words that come to mind when you compare the food in Chinatown. From the moment you step in you are received with a warm reception from the manager Mr Ravi and his team. We were seated next to beautiful Chinese figurines. The wait staff were very patient and helpful in giving suggestions and recommendations. The black pepper chicken not on the menu is a must try. Also the american chopsuey and schezwan fried rice was awesome. Tried Fried ice cream and brownies. If you want the best Chinese food Chinatown is a must go. Kudhos to Mr Ravi , Sakthi and staff for their personalized customer centric service.

China Town is probably one of the finest and most elegant Chinese restaurants in our city. Right from it’s elegant ambience to the courteous staff to the lip smacking food, you come out with zero regrets. I’m not going to explain each dish. They were all too good. But the standouts were Crispy Duck in Plum
sauce and the Chicken Drumsticks❤️ The succulent duck in the plum sauce gave it a sweet and tangy taste. Chicken drumsticks, classic as ever, were simply beautiful and delicious. The fried ice cream was exquisite. The prices are on the high side but they’re totally worth it. Great food comes at a price and it’s worth it. Moreover, we don’t spend lavishly on food everyday, do we?🙈 So go to China Town with your family and friends and have one of the best Chinese meals in Chennai 💯

Lovely restaurant..Good food..Perfect place for catching up with family and mates..Enjoyed a lot..Worth the money..Some of the best chinese that one can indulge in..Kudos guys.

Excellent authentic Chinese cuisine. Food tastes great and the service is really good but the ambiance and decor has been the same for many years and needs to be revamped to look more modern. Food served here is definitely one of the best in the city and they seem to consistently serve great tasting food, since the time I have been visiting there. Bottom line, you won't be disappointed. 😊
Avra Paul
Got to know about this place from my brother. The service is fine but the food was average in taste. Food was fairly priced. Overall a decent experience.
Kheerthi
The ambience was heavenly and the service was polite and great. It gave a feeling of a typical Chinese place! We ordered mushroom and chicken sizzlers, schezwan chicken noodles (they were amazing), veg Hakka noodles (recommended), baby corn lotus stem water chestnut in hoisin sauce ( it was a really new dish with a tasty gravy) and fried rice. Deserts were just okay. We could totally visit this restaurant again!

China Town is one of our favorite haunts and has been so for decades. We used to visit the place as a family when I was back in school and even today when the family gets together in Chennai, we make it a point to visit the place. A visit to Chennai is incomplete without a visit to China Town. Our favorite orders - chicken lollipop, American chopsuey, Phuket fish and fried ice cream. Ravi Padmanabhan takes good care of us every time we are there and is very attentive to our likes and requests. Hope to see China Town do well in the years to come as well... and continue to remain our favorite haunt!

An another restaurant that got added up in my favorite restaurants list. One of the finest place where we get the best Chinese food without missing its own authenticity.

The foods they serve was so delicious and perfect in the marks. The place was fully in a theme of Chinese which made me feel like dining somewhere in the place of China.

The price so convincing and worth it. Talking about their services, they are splendid. Moreover, this place satisfied me more than my exceptations. They do serve dessert which were so different and delicious. Chinatown is located in gopalapuram. The must try for Chinese food lovers.🤩

First we come to the Hot and sour soup that was extremely good with crispy flakes.

Then we come to Lotus stem with plum sauce. Wowww! Great food and good ambience. The food came on time and we didn't have to wait for a long time. The people were also very friendly and very well mannered. We also got a really good discount since we had Zomato gold. Overall a great lunch experience at the end of a busy week.

Wow!!
Relished the original style of Delightful dishes at China Town. Courteous staff. Nice ambience. Felt back home at China Town. Loved the minced chicken fried rice with burnt garlic. Still now lingering in my soul, though enjoyed at Noon. Hats off to the Chef, who made my day.
Finally, love to mention about Thiru. Ravi Padmanabhan, the most experienced manager, who extends his versatile hospitality with affectionate smile, giving better suggestions on food combinations and wish to pay special attention at every customer with much care, which makes me visit China Town, again and again, to experiment his suggested dishes.

Respect your gentle and meek approach, dear Ravi Sir.

Thanking the whole team.

Keep on improving and fulfilling the customers with more and more new varieties.

Best wishes.

I stepped in there for lunch on a weekend, i had a non-veg buffet it was pretty good and especially the dragon chicken and desserts were excellent. Their service was quick too. Worth the try.
Harshika Ramasubramanian
The most underrated place! Perfect for non vegetarians especially. The succulent chicken and fish is honestly the best ever here! The portions are just right! And the veggie hakka noodles is made to perfection! Thank you China town for a sumptuous meal!

Next time, the vegetarian menu. I hope it exceeds expectations too!

What i like here was the honey chicken . The taste was very good. Not only this , all the dishes taste good. For people who like Chinese foods can give it a try 😁
Vejay Anand S
If there is one place I would give top rating for only for the service staff it would be this place. It is indeed a pleasure to eat here. The food is Indo Chinese and there is not much wrong they do.... And I am a regular here.
Archanaa Manohar
Hubby and I went here for dinner. Ambience was good. We ordered the crab meat soup which was really good. Phuket fish, chicken fried rice and Hunan chicken. Everything tasted really good. Above all the service was great. I am carrying and the manager immediately asked if they should avoid ajinomoto. Which was very sweet and thoughtful. Must visit if u love Chinese food.
Karthick Rajamani
Extremely bad. I think the prawn was spoilt. We just tasted it and everything was off right from the consistency to the appearance. Please refund this amount or do something to rectify this. I don’t generally complain but even the soup was not right. How can you go wrong with soup??
Mayonka Mukherjee
The dimsums and the deserts are ❤️❤️ whenever I have been here, I opted for the buffet menu. Menu is somewhat similar with Mainland China. Weekend lunch or dinner it is almost always fully booked.
Terance Franklin
When visited very long decades ago the food was good and especially love the dragon prawns and their fried rice.dont know whether if the same taste is there or not like before now.

Undoubtedly my favourite Chinese restaurant... I have been going here for past 6 years. If you're a soup lover, Chicken Wanton and Noodle soup is a must! And the mixed fried rice is just heavenly! The interior charm of the restaurant is very soothing and synonymous with the cuisine... Hope it stays forever.
Priyanka Vaitheeswaran
One amazing chinese restaurant with delicious food & a wonderful ambience. Must try : wonton & dimsums.
Good hospitality by the staffs & the manager.
Dr. Paromita Adhikary
Me & my husband went for dinner. We ordered the schezwan prawn hakka chowmein, hu nan chicken & packed egg- chicken hakka chowmein for my mom. For dessert, we had the cassata slice. The chow was delicious, generously served with appreciable quantities of prawn, chicken & egg. The servings were adequate. The hu nan chicken seemed perfect for our palate. The dessert was something new for me. I liked the food. The ambience was welcome, staff were wonderful. Overall a good experience. Would definitely recommend.
WAYNE_THE_FOODIE
The kimchi that they gave was HORRIBLE and UNORIGINAL . It was just cabbage tossed in TOMATO SAUCE . Ordered a veg spring rolls . Taste was average but took 30 mins to arrive. Service was one of the worst I have seen in recent times. There are very few waiters and none of them are that committed .
3.7 rating is too much for this restaurant.

food is bad

Today we had some shopping plans in Mount road and also had to Meet a friend near music academy. When all done it was 1 and with the light breakfast in the morning we had we felt so hungry. So far a change we thought of trying some Oriental cuisine. Then I remembered the China Town so close by. We went there. It's located in the third floor behind copper chimney Dr. Radha Krishnan road. The restaurant is well lit and spacious. When we reached there we had a choice for buffet lunch too. It's 695/person. Considering the hunger and price list in menu card we thought buffet will make sense. The buffet lunch consists of a soup (veg/non veg) 3 non veg starters (chicken wings, fish and chicken Momo) 4 veg starters (wonton, dragon cauliflower, thonso potatoes, veg Momo ) 3 salads and 4 main course items with a decent spread of desserts.

It was tummy full and most of the items except the main course was all good and tasty. It's a good place to try if you're so hungry and interested to try Oriental cuisine.

Visited this place for dinner while in Chennai. Location is good and the buffet spread was elaborate. however the quality of food preparation was just average. With little effort and supervision of the management this place can do much better.

I have lived in Chennai for over ten years. Chinatown (on the 3rd Floor, on Dr Radhakrishnan Salai near the Music Academy) provides my favorite Chinese lunch and dinner buffet in town. The starters and the various dishes are delicious. Mr Ravi and his staff are amazing -- always very quick and eager to make each guest feel comfortable and satisfied. The ambiance is elegant and quiet -- the (Chinese) music is played at a very low volume, which is important for having relaxed conversations and making business phone calls. When one orders a la carte, the chef is willing to cook any dish to order (more or less salt, etc). Thank you to Mr Ravi and team -- You help to make living in Chennai a pleasure!
Salabat Ali Khan
One of the best Chinese in the town😁, especially the chicken lollipop is too good here, the staff are excellent, and very polite .. maybe the price could be a bit better .. still worth the money
Haseeb Modi
Awesome buffet. Went there when they had the offer for the fifth dine in free. Very nice starters and the Main course is good. A bit more variety in Desserts would have wrapped it up nicely. Friendly staff and good service with dimly lit ambience, which gives it an Oriental feel. Been there several times and will continue.
Atanu Bhaumik
Love to visit this place, they have fantastic menu and the fusion with subtle variation makes it more interesting. The chinese food is more or less the authentic.
Ragul Parani
Went there for the new year buffet and wasn't disappointed. Given that I'm not a fan of Chinese, it took me by surprise that i finished my meal without any reproach

I have visited this restaurant in the past but on hearing that they were hosting a Mongolian Food Fest went to try it after a gap of nearly a year.
The approach to China Town is quite a circuitous route and this time it was even more precarious than usual with the narrow tunnel and creaking floorboards adding to the excitement! Still with the spirit of great Mongol warriors like Chengis Khan in mind I prodded on.
I had also built up quite an appetite by the time I entered the place so on seeing a buffet laid out jumped staright in to start.
They served us a delicious Lung Fung Soup and the starters served were Singapore Chilly Chicken,Chicken wings and the veggie variants in the same sauce.
THey also served steamed chicken dim sums which were not great ,the skin was quite thick and the filling less in comparison.
By now I was a little puzzled, the starters were all standard Chinese fare where were the exotic Mongolian dishes that I had come to try?
The waiter on questioning informed us that the festival was only for a la carte items not the buffet.
I was so disappointed ,it was partly my fault for not ascertaining the situation and the waitstaff should also inform the patrons beforehand which they did not.
Since we had already had the soup and starters we had no choice but to bid adieu to my Mongolian taste session and continue with the Buffet.
I also felt that they have cut down on the size of the buffet -reduced the starters and there was no live counter .
The chicken fried rice was so dry and had practically no chicken and the other main course dishes were Lamb in Oyster sauce(decent),Fish in Pepper sauce and a horrible tasting Chicken in Scehwan sauce.
The desserts included cut fruits,a tasty creme caramel, blueberry mousse and some dry ,wedges of Bread pudding which I didnt try.
Bread pudding should be served preferable warm and should have a gooey centre so if you can cut slices of it ,does not really qualify as a pudding.
I also feel that the buffet is not value for money as they have hiked the rates by about Rs 100 but reduced the dishes ,I remember them serving a fish starter earlier.
So maybe my trek through rough terrain to enter China Town will be put on hold till they announce another exotic Food festival and Ill make sure to order Ala Carte.

Saw in the newspaper about the Mongolian Food festival and thought to give it a try. Went through a tunnel where you would not like to be caught alone late at night to access the restaurant.
There was a buffet set up so we thought it was a Mongolian food buffet and so we opted for the buffet.
We were served a delicious Lung Fung Chicken soup and Singapore chilly chicken, Chicken Wings, Chicken Momos and Vegetable in a similar sauce to the non veg dishes. We asked about the Mongolian Food fest and he informed it was only for Alacarte menu. Was very dissapointed.
Then there was the usual chicken fried rice, fish in pepper sauce, chicken in schezwan sauce and shredded lamb in oyster sauce. Then there was the american chopsuey. This reminded me of the food we had in Bangalore during my college days and so I took it but there seemed to be no noodles in it. After i finished I found that the noodles were kept on the side. Very unfortunate.
For desert there were cut fruits, pieces of brownie, butter scotch pastry, blue berry mousse, coffee panacotta with a strong bitter coffee taste and good caramel custard. The bread pudding looked very dry and old so did not try that.
Overall a very poor dining experience and on top of this we had to pay service charge + GST on SC.
Please follow government guidelines.
