Review Nutmeg The Gourmet Shop - Chennai

SL Narayanan
We bought some cake this morning from Nutmeg since our other favourites ( that are stand alone bakeries in Chennai ) were all closed. What an astounding epicurean experience ! ITC Hotels are always known for their high quality restaurants but we have never bought confectionery other than Fabelle chocolates from Grand Chola. The banana walnut cake and chocolate bar with pecans - which we bought - were sinfully delicious. We will be back for more and soon

Nutmeg sets a perfect wooden ambience with dim warm light. It remains my favourite place to order birthday cakes & have my evening coffee. Good hospitality!!!

This place is amazing and I am just falling short of words to describe my experience with Nutmeg.
I called up this place hoping to get a decent cake for my friends birthday and landed up having a one of a kind experience. I called up the ITC main hotel to get the contact of a Nutmeg staff and the staff in charge who I connected with was very kind and considerate. He gave me a lot of options to choose from and helped me choose the Piedmont cake which is basically a chocolate Hazlenut cake and the flavour is something you should definitely experience atleast once. It was such a melt in mouth, creamy, rich and dense cake. Truly gourmet cake and the best part is 1kg of this heavenly delicacy was 1650+taxes. The small pastry was about 150+taxes which was so cute. They had chocolate printed birthday messages and they even made custom chocolate printed message upon request which was extremely lovely and elegant when I placed it on top of the Piedmont cake I ordered.
I have had so many cakes but the experience of having this one is just something I cannot forget!!

I have already recommended many of my friends to come visit this shop atleast once to have a wonderful experience to share with their loved ones.
The Bottom line pros and cons are
**Pros**
Considerate and caring staff
The heavenly lip smacking taste of the cake
Price of the cake, felt like affordable luxury
Experience while dining at the cake shop
Packing of the cake, fancy so fancy
Quantity of the cake, looks small but super dense

**Cons**
You missing out going to this place. If you have read this review please go have an experience that you will never forget.

ITC GRAND CHOLA, Chennai I have never been this satisfied with my experience in the recent past. Thank you for such a great experience. You have an awesome and great supporting staff. I will keep coming for more. My only concern is you have increased my standards so much that any other experience will feel like a compromise!

Without doubt one of the favorite hotels I stayed during my time in chennai! Upon arrival we were warmly welcomed by the staff. The staff was extremely friendly, the restaurant very flexible (appreciate this!) and the restaurant supervisor deserves a special thanks. We had two great evenings here, which obviously also added up to the experience.

I loved this small cake in nutmeg when compared to the other ! The dark chocolate cake also tasted good but I ll recommend you this for all the chocolate lovers out there ! This is a classic cake ! The ambience at cafe Mercara express wil be too good ! Try it out guys ! :) not an expensive pastry too:)

So visited this place finally with a couple of friends, last week and truth be said our experience with the food was quite disappointing. We had ordered the desire, the dawn, a macaron and a slice of blueberry pie. The macaron was quite good, and the desire a mousse based dessert was good too, but the pie was lumpy and unpalatable, and the dawn was bland, nothing great. I then wanted to pick up a birthday cake so selected the Piemont from the display and with taxes it came to about 2000 rupees, a colossal waste I realised after the birthday party. It was really bad, the cake base was dry and the mousse inside was nondescript, I really felt bad to the point of apologising for such a pathetic cake. I mean, I could have picked up a better cake from one of the bakeries near home, but I thought it would be a nice surprise and little did I know what sort of horrible surprise was in store for everybody at the party. Truth be said, nobody could finish their slice of the cake, it all went to waste.
The ambiance is top notch though, but when you pay so much you expect the food to be great, the pie and cake were far from that, they were barely edible.
Service was quite slow too, had to ask for the bill three or four times. But one person stood out, Shiva, he was really nice and pleasant, his sunny disposition put a smile on our faces despite the food being acutely below par.

We visited Nutmeg on an evening to satiate our cravings for some desserts. It's located inside Cafe Mercara Express.

A fine gourmet shop having a good variety of pastries, cakes, breads, macarons and savouries.

The ambience is top notch here, just like how it should be in any star property.

We tried :
Blueberry Cheese cake : it was firm cheesecake with a sweet blueberry topping, little bit different from other cheesecakes, was good.

Chocolate eclair : any chocolate lover would love this, undoubtedly one of the best chocolate eclair I've had so far.

Dark Chocolate macaron: slightly bigger than the usual macarons, but soft and it had a chocolate ganache taste, absolutely lovely.

One best thing about the place is their pricing, it is very much affordable. Everything in the menu was reasonably priced between Rs 150-200, inclusive of taxes which is a wow factor.

Nutmeg is one patisserie in the city where the finest desserts are offered at a friendly cost.
It's located right inside Cafe Mercara Express.

They have a good variety of pastries, cakes, breads, macarons and savouries .

We had :

Blueberry Cheese cake : it was firm cheesecake finished with a sweet blueberry topping, this is a truly satisfying experience. Quite exotic and different from other cheesecakes that was made using biscuits as a Base and this cheesecake also had a soft luscious vanilla sponge.

Chocolate eclair : this might win the heart of any dessert person like me. It was hollow inside and was baked to crisp with a smooth chocolate fondant as the topping.

Dark Chocolate macaron: it had a chocolate ganache filling taste, which was absolutely divine, one of the best macarons I've had so far.

The prices are reasonable, not too expensive. Everything was priced between INR 100-250, inclusive of taxes which is ridiculously good.

They have Happy Hours after 7pm which is applicable only for the pastries and macarons, where in the offer is buy One get One free.

It costed us about INR 450.

I'm definitely heading back to taste the rest.

Food- 2 : ambience-5 : service-5. Ambience and service was top notch. We had ordered two pastries # dark chocolate cake and # nutty chocolate. Went with High expectations and excitement, but was disappointed with the taste. Charging 295rs for a bottle of water( veen water bottle) is very disappointing.

It was 11 pm few nights ago. We were done having some eats and drinks elsewhere and looking to try someplace new and this is the place that popped into my mind. I've never been to this Cafe but do know that they serve some amazing desserts and that it's a 24 hour one. When I suggested it to my friend he asked me if I was mad and that he didn't want to go broke eating dessert. I assured him that he would have to spend much lesser than expected for some items here. He obviously didn't believe me. So to prove him wrong we Ola'ed here. The best part is you can walk in anytime day or night here.

Nutmeg has been on my wishlist ever since I started visiting ITC, but it wasn't a viable option as I visit the Hotel only for a hefty brunch which includes desserts. So last evening I decided to satiate my prolonged wish. Unfortunately it was closed down. Upon inquiring I found that they aren't closed but merged with the nearby Cafe Mercara Express.

What we had..

#Maharaja - Its a mango delight topped with two mini macaroons. It has layers of coconut dacquoise, coriander and mango cremeux finished with mango glaze. Taste was quite unique and enjoyable.

#Desire - This Nutmeg Signature pastry is the epitome of Sinfully dark. Its a blend of vanilla creme brulee, Chocolate mousse and pecan nut meringue finished with cocoa ganache. Undoubtedly one of the best Chocolate pastries I have ever had.

#Piemont - Another chocolate delicacy which wasn't dark but subtle and it was comprised of Hazelnut dacquoise base, praline mousse and topped with a milk chocolate slab.

#Blueberry Orange Muffin - Little bigger than the normal muffins, topped with orange peel. It was perfectly moist and mildly sweet.

Service and ambiance was top notch. Best thing was the pricing, pastries were reasonably priced approximately at Rs. 150 each (excl taxes). All my selections were excellent in their own way. Bill value was around Rs. 700.

This is the only eat-out at ITC I dont have any complaints. Each piece of cake is made with great and precise expertise. The pastries are not sweet and aptly quantified to suffice your stomach and tastebuds. The best is the chocolate eclair.

This one is a gem of a place, with mouth watering desserts to quiche to patties to pizzas they have it all.
Their desserts are the finest I have ever tasted anywhere in India. Especially the chocolate eclairs.
Have to thank the chef personally through this post, your desserts are out of this world.
Unfortunately I was there for a short period of time but did try the freshly baked mushroom quiche and a chocolate eclairs and loved both. I wish the Kolkata Nutmeg could reach the standard which the Chennai one has.
The glazed donuts and the chicken pizzas are some
other stuffs which we ordered and devoured within ten minutes. Excellent!

Loved the creations.. They were beyond amazing.. The desire was the best ever!
But... The staff.. For God knows what reason are rude beyond belief. They all but threw the pastries at our table. Not at all the typical ITC experience. But the food is fab..

Nestled in a beautiful little alcove, it is an amazing little patisserie at the ITC Grand Chola. In a hotel that boasts of a larger than life experience at every inch, this humanly sized place provides sweet solace to the passing gourmet with an incurable sweet tooth. The Piedmont is a must have and the macaroons are probably the best I have had in a while. The prices, contrary to expectations are quite reasonable.

Hint: after 9:30pm they have an irresistible offer of buy 3 items and get the fourth one free. 😉

Not only are their 'cakes made to order' the best in the city, but they also pull these wonders overnight with every tiny extra detail taken care of. Their service is excellent. My sincere thanks to Chef Michelle for making my dad's birthday even more special.

We chose to have dessert here after a meal at Pan Asian. It was late and the pastry choices were limited. We chose a chocolate éclairs and a double chocolate crunch. Both, while pleasing on the eyes and OK on the taste, did not seem fresh. The cake in double chocolate crunch and the puff in éclairs were hard and dry, clear sign of an old pastry.

The menu has quite a variety (savory items available too) and the prices actually are quite reasonable. Also, they get my appreciation for a great looking actual edible ginger bread house outside the patisserie as Christmas decoration!!

Me and my brother tried Macrons. Needless to mention Nutmeg offered us the best Macrons we have ever had! The ambience is pretty, the menu cute. All together it was a good experience!

A very short visit to this place and i must say it is not what we think it is.I had tried like 2 types of pastries and for the price they had charged for it,the pastries were hopeless. They didn't suck but why would anyone not expect something extremely delicious in a place like that. Thank God i didn't try more.Yeah, the sitting is located inside a lavish surrounding. The seats weren't comfortable at all.Ambience is cool. There are many better places around the city to try awesome pastries.

Amazing place with good ambience. It's cheap considering the fact it's located at ITC everything is under 400rs. Macrons were yum and the cakes were delicious. The flavours were rich and the texture was good. Very much recommended place.

I was here today with my friends. We have ordered some deserts and capuccino. Deserts was tasty. Capuccino was acceptable. Price acceptable for this place. But service was very very very slowly.

Well, we strolled around ITC after dinner and stumbled here, and wondered what the best hotel in chennai would do when it comes to desserts. Ordered two pastries and they were just about ok, plus the limited variety didn't give us that many options. I'd say bring on more, and they don't really have a readymade kitchen to alter and cream it up... It's what's out there. Nothing to talk on the price, as its ITC... You know what you are walking into :-)

Though short of time , I exclusively wanted to relax after the conference at ITC. As a foodie this cute Patisserie was my spot. Ambience of this cute Lil place is soothing. The staff here is remarkably supportive. One must never shy asking the ingredients of desserts and I m naturally inquisitive when it comes to food. Decor is aristocratic. Variety from macaroons to cakes have , unlikely a 7 star, very normal price tag. I ordered for Summer Epice and it made my day. I relived French moments at streets of Paris .

Ambience - 5/5 Food - 4/5 Service - 4/5 Price - ABOVE ANYTHING U COULD IMAGINE !!!!
Want to enjoy a hot cup of coffee and mouth watering cakes ?? If yes nutmeg should b in ur list :) Evidently, this is an over priced 7 star cake shop with small slices that can fill u instantly ... Being a whacky choco fan, I couldn't finish a Double Chocolate here !!! Meanwhile, the cheese cake with blueberry juice (tried by my friend) was heavenly... On the whole .. Ready for a rich coffee experience ?? Then nutmeg will certainly satisfy u ... But remember to enter with a filled pocket !!

Had heard lots about the place, maybe that's why my expectations were sky high. The ambience is perfect for any mood, music good and the interior nicely done. Wanted to grab a quick bite with a colleague so we ordered a puff, macroon and almond croissant. While the macroon was amazing, the croissant was in fact really bad. Overall an average experience, perhaps a good place to just catch up for a coffee or read a book (they have kept one on each table, which is quite cool), not the best snacks in chola for sure.

Epic place. Their pastries are awesome. One shouldnt miss Nutmeg and Mercara cafe in ITC Grand Chola. The coffee was brought from Cafe Mercara which was really good.
