Review Laxmi Restaurant - Dehradun

Ankita Joshi
ONLY CASH PAYMENTS ARE ACCEPTED! Nice little fast food joint inside the bustling paltan bazaar. Probably the only restaurant in the vicinity. You can visit here for veg chow mein and South Indian snacks like idlis/wadas/dosa after doing shopping in paltan bazaar. Prices are very extremely reasonable. The South Indian snacks are slightly at the spicier end and idli sambar is a usually preferred option in South Indian snacks as it's served very hot. It's not the best South Indian food you will ever eat, but a decent healthy option to try after you are tired due to shopping! Idli/vada comes dipped in sambar and chutney is separate, if you want sambar separate, pls inform at the time of placing order. Chow mein is available in full/half plate options. I visit this place every year since my childhood as this is an essential part of my vacations! My usual order here is idli sambar, full plate chow mein and Lassi. You can try the lassi only if you like it chilled, at a thinner consistency and less sweet. Badam milk is also a good option. Cold drinks are also available. Cold coffee is available on few days. Hot Tea or hot coffee not available. Service is good but slow as the place is usually crowded and it will take some time for you to find a seat and for a waiter to reach you to place your order. The payments are strictly cash only and no online payments are accepted. Payments are collected at the main counter, after finishing food. Bill is NOT bought at the table. I think more than food, people visit Lakshmi restaurant for its old days charm and nostalgia, so don't expect too much variety. The menu is fixed. You might end up sharing a table with strangers (due to the crowd), who are there to share either the same nostalgia or the same curiosity to understand all the hype around this place!

One of the oldest restaurant of paltan bazar, me and my wife use to come to this restaurant when we were in the college (2000-2003), food quality is same like those days, got chance to revisit the places of our memories.

Firstly I like the taste of Masla Dosa the most cause they Serve the food with it's authentic flavour. No extra spices no food preservatives just Basic and real flavours. And secondly the atmosphere is just out of any gen z's expectations. The way Bollywood movies presents the cafe and restaurants of 90's era located in Mumbai and Goa the same kind of ambiance and Vibes I get here. In my opinion this place is really Great for Dosa.

Lakshmi Restaurant is one of the oldest & best in town, situated in Paltan bazaar. Usually this place is crowdy due to its popularity & great south indian food. This is definitely my favourite food joint as I love their south indian food & especially their lassi. Dosa & lassi is a must try. It's always a nice experience visiting this place.

The best place in town for the ones having South Indian cravings! The aroma of sambhar, while passing through the restaurant, is enough to attract the food lovers. The quantity of stuffing of dosas is quite good, which satisfies the hunger. Other delicacies being served here, include wada sambhar, idli sambhar, noodles, chole bhature, lassi and much more.

Surprised to see this place in the middle of heavy crowded market, paltan bazar in Dehradun. South Indian dishes here are so authentic and particularly their sambar with Vada or dosa. Pricing is reasonable for the taste. All south indians don't miss this place if you go near by clock tower in Dehradun, I am sure you will love it.

Very nice authentic food. You will get to feel the vibes of an age old restaurant which you will enjoy very much.

As a kid, I remember going to Lakshmi restaurant whenever we went to Paltan Bazaar for shopping. A crowded, full of noise south Indian eatery, Lakshmi restaurant is known for its crisp, flavourful dosas and chutneys.

Even now I visit this place when I go to Dehradun and I can safely say, if you are super hungry and want a meal in ten minutes, just land up here as the place is fast on delivery.

Very good taste. Very good people. Old interiors but maintained.
Chutney is delicious.
It's been more than 30 years ,I m visiting the place.
Great...First place which comes to my mind if anybody mentions MASALA DOSA.
Dil Se DOONITE
I remember my mom and dad taking us to this restaurant once in a week during our childhood days.
Lakshmi restaurant has been providing tasty food since ages. Situated amidst the Chaos of Paltan bazaar , Lakshmi is one of the favourites of doonites to savour the South Indian taste.
I visit this restaurant monthly as I love their dosa. The stuffing is just perfect and Sambhar has the taste you won't miss ever.
This restaurant is a bit crowded everyday. At times you don't even get a table even after waiting for more than half an hour.

Amidst the hustle-bustled lanes of Paltan Bazaar (flea market of Dehradun) to soothe you from monotonous negotiations and unrest crowds stands a food corner named "Lakshmi Restaurant" lending service since decades. The shops aces in serving sweets & south Indian.this place holds an indoor seating arrangement... because of it being amidst a market it lacks parking space....the service is quick and fine. What we had
1) Masala Dosa- This place holds fame from its wisdom but has started to face a minimal declination in its quality over the period of time.
But on the basis of its location it's worth trying. (₹72)
.
2)Lassi(₹38)
.

Good to have a cup of coffee and if hungry have a dosa while shopping in Paltan bazaar. Parking is far by Doon standards. Space is not much as its in middle of the bazaar

I've been visiting this place since ages...I'm simply in love with their masala dosa...have even tried their veg noodle and rasmalai... it's a simple restaurant serving good south indian food

Always a delight😊
Brings back loadz of childhood memories..💞
Though needs to pick up on quality as it is goin low as compared to the price😕

Wish I could give negative ratings. What a useless restaurant. We went there seeing the board 80 yrs old or something. The food they serve you is also 80 year old, it seems. The interiors are shabby, the plates unclean. Masala dosa was served with stale chutney and the worst sambar I've eaten. Even the aloo sabji in dosa was cold. idli was hard, like rubber. Please avoid this place at all costs. Worst south indian ever.
Rishi Sabharwal
one of the oldest place for all the south indian food and some snacks
all kinds of refreshing drinks are also available
good to eat are
dosa
idli or vada
lassi
Grazing Sheep
For me it's HISTORICAL. I am its regular visitor for ages...10-15 yrs 😄. One of the oldest restaurants in the midst of jammed Paltan Bazaar. I have seen times where masala dosa used to cost from 10 bucks only to around 60/- now. Here itself, South-indian cuisine was being introduced in my life. I have tasted masala dosa, idli, vada with sambhar, badam-milk, chowmein etc. Masala dosa is of course the best. They serve you loads of extra sambhar too.😎
Service is quick. Prices are budget-friendly. Yes, ambience is too local. Might not suit those who loook for classy places. But for me it's a hunger saviour whenever I go for shopping for hours.🙏

You can try this is you wanna have dosa or idli which are the specialties here.I also had a cold coffee, that was amazing. It has normal priced menu.So if shopping in paltan bazaar and want to grab a bite this could be on the list! 😉

I am going to this place since 1988, its one of the oldest eating place in dehradun, famous for its masala dosa and cold coffee, my childhood memories will always be linked to this place. They still give you that crispy dosa however now things have changed and place has lost it charm but still I love to go there when ever i get time.

Paltan Bazaar is famous for girls shopping and meanwhile if you are hungry, Lakshmi restaurant is the place u can rely upon.
This restaurant is been there since ages and seeing it on the first sight you won't believe that you will get something good to eat there (warning- don't go by the looks) but believe me the service, the quality of food you will get here you won't even find in some good restaurants of Dehradun.
They are basically famous for their South Indian food but m sure you won't regret if you order Chinese also(though limited option).
Crisp Masala Dosa, delicious idli etc will make you go waaoo.
Do visit this and den again.. carry on with Shopping..!!

For the best south indian in town this is thr place for you! Yummiest lassi and at a very low cost! For 2people the maximum expense is 260 rupees and it has average seating area!

My experience to the place was completely different from what the reviewers said.
As soon as we seated , we were served water. The service was super fast . In fact far better than many expensive restaurants.
Then we ordered masala dosa. It was served in minutes . The dosa was very crispy with perfect filling. The sambhar was nice and chutney was excellent.
The cons of the place are the ambience and the dim light but apart from it I found everything nice about the place.

Though the restro offers authentic South Indian food like varieties of Dosas, Idlis, Sambhar Bada and Indian desserts, yet it fails drastically from the point of its services, sitting space, & overpriced menu. The restro is said to b one of the oldest one in Doon. Sorry to say but my experience being there was really bad. The restro has more cons than pros, some of them being-

-You have to wait long for a table.

-They have priced their dishes infractionally, dosa for 68? PS: Forget the change now!!

-Hygiene is zero. They serve in steel plates, nd you can see your plates not wiped or cleaned properly.

My Ratings- Just 1.5/5 that too coz of its fame. I would better suggest you to try roadside dosa wala with name 'Madrasi Dosa' at chakrata road. Minimum price, awesome taste with utmost satisfaction.

The smell of south Indian food is really mouth watering over here. But once you get inside first the ambience turns you off. The food quality and overall service is quite disappointing and disheartening. And it got worst recently. Be careful, you can get insects in your food and in that low light its difficult to figure out.

Rate/Price: 2/5
Food Quality : 0.5/5
Food Quantity: 3/5
Overall Hygiene: 0.0/5
Hospitality: 1.5/5
Overall ambience: 0.5/5

Ratings from previous years:
2011: 3
2012: NA
2013: 2
2014: 2
2015: 1
2016: 1

One of the old restro of dun , restro is in the market of clock tower.i used to went there with my friends , Restro is used to be famous for masala Dosa but now it's famous for its bad services.

Recent visit was the last visit of my life for this restro, had been there with my friends ordered masala Dosa .the service was very late (after placing our order we have to wait for half an hour) and after an hour what we got a tasteless Dosa ,unhealthy, unhygenic, ambiance not good, no space for parking.
Rates are increased very highly .never wanna be there again even in my hungriness...

My rating for restro
*Ambience..2 (not good)
*Food..1.5(taste less)
*Service..1(very slow)
*Charges..1(very high as compare to food quality)

Very very disappointed

This small town place is hard to miss on. Lakshmi is a place I have always been very excited yo visit since my childhood - when the masala dosa was priced at 16 rupees and was everything that I wanted to spend my money on.

Being in paltan bazaar it was a hub where almost everybody visited. For a place to have no ambiance and plain mess kind of place to do such great business is a big deal and it does when it offers great taste. The aroma of the dosas, chhole bhaturas would entice anybody to eat at this place. I haven't visited this place in a long time now but I still long!
Gajendra Khanna
This is one of the oldest places in the area for South Indian food. I must have eaten their dosas many times. Great place to take a break during shopping at paltan bazaar

Hard to miss place, when shopping in paltan bazaar. This place has become a landmark, and is famous for its dosa, rabdi. The ambience is not so good, but people don't mind eating here. The prices have gone super high in last few years, and not worth. New items can be added to the menu to attract people.

Lakshmi, gives a feeling that there are signs of South India in Dehradun ! Paltan Bazaar, the hopping-shopping place for us in childhood and the one place which can help your fill your stomach in Paltan Bazar with quick South Indian Food is Lakshmi ! Always crowded and for a quick food with great value, it's Lakshmi if you have to have food in Paltan Bazar !

If you are at Paltan Bazaar, it's hard to miss this place. More than popularity, its the nostalgia that sinks in when Doonites visit this place.
My love for yummy gulab jamuns brings me here. Eat there or pack-up the handi for savoury at home. Serve nothing less than piping hot. 😋
Let the legacy continue!!
Pranshul Dangwal
My mom started coming here since her college time and I am grateful to her for showing this place to me.
Pretty down to earth place but amazing dosa
Do go here if shopping at paltan bazar makes you hungry.
Riddhima
One of the oldest restaurant of dehradun. Ny1 who has been born n brought up in dun must hv surely visited the place. Thr prices r still so reasonable. They shud try & work more on thr quality as b4. Doonites hv an emotional connection to this place. You don't hv to be a critic to judge this place. Just cherish memories & hv fun. Rest everything is gud and can be tried.
Dr. Sahai
For Doonites who have seen the city's metamorphosis into a hurried eating scene with new restaurants opening up, Lakshmi offers an old feel to it. The best quality of the restaurant is the aroma that fills the air while you pop in for a quick bite while shopping in the busy street of Paltan Bazaar. Not a great ambience but old Doonites don't seem to mind. People go for south style coffee and masala dosa. The fact that it is always packed with people and from varied walks of life, talks a lot about its popularity.

Very old restaurant, my father took me here first time when i was a kid. Since then whenever i come to dehradun i eat here. It gives a very old feelings and kind of attachment, they serve very good masala dosa and coffee, it makes you feel sitting in some British time restaurant. Must go restaurant in paltan bazaar in dehradun.
Pal Pal
If u going to paltan bazaar for shopping and feel hungry, do not miss out on lakshmi. The dosa is pretty good and so are the idlis. The cutlet is decent. Do try out their lassi. If you looking out for a fine dine then dis is not the place. But the food and the service are good.
Rohan Chandna
Unhygenic Unhealthy
Over Rated place
I didnt found any reason to sit there anymore and eat, disgusting smell coming
People who are associated have no interest in what workers are doing
Dissapointed .
Prashant Chandola
It's an average place... Masala dosa is good but sambhar is strictly average..Lassi wasnt good either..famous because of it's location rather than it's food..
Shubhangni Jain
So this place looked like madras cafe in green park, Delhi and like any other typical south indian cafe which are pretty good so I decided to try it.

We ordered masala dosa and idli for us. The food smelled great but the taste wasn't as good as the smell. The sambhar was disappointing. The masala dosa individually was good though, so was idli. Only if sambhar would have been better I would have rated this place better.

I rate it low also because of the hygiene and the staff which was a bit rude and impatient
Kunal Jhingrun
If you are roaming in paltan bazaar its impossible not to notice the aroma of sambar coming from lakshmi resturant. For doonites its a place to relax after a shopping spree. The dosa is average(never understood the hype regarding it), menu is small, the service too is average and the ambiance is not good. But these things cannot undermine the historical importance the place holds. Must try atleast once.
Shantanu Agarwal
Legendary restaurant ! A bit overcrowded, and yes they do serve snacks quickly, people usually visit this place when they visit Dun's famous Paltan Bazaar, a decent place to have lunch. Basically serves south indian dishes which are of good quality but if we talk about the price, yes the prices are quite high, plus you have to pay VAT tax extra.
One thing which I dont like about this place is that they charge for extra sambhar which should be free of cost and it is free in south india !
Antriksh Kumar
It's criminal to expect wonders from this place. People don't go to Lakshmi for a fine dining experience, or for looking to choose from a manuscript sized menu book. When you're in the famous Paltan Bazar, and feel like grabbing a snack or some more, that's when one goes to grab a bite at Lakshmi. As is evident, they don't have a huge menu; just certain specific things that one would expect at a south Indian food joint. Not much variety, but who's to bother about variety. Most of the Doonites go to the place for the nostalgic charm; maybe reminiscing their childhood.
Yes, you should go there once in a while, and be advised, the place is generally packed.
Dhruv Tuteja
No variety in South Indian food... Only two-three kinds of Dosa is available. Coming to the quality the food isn't that hygienic as it should be. Overall you can find a better place than this.
Baladitya Jatavallabhula
Well.. Well.. Well.. My childhood place.

This place is among the oldest and the most popular restaurants in DDun where people love to stop over whenever they visit to Paltan Bazaar. You can feel the restaurant as you are nearing it because of the mouth-watering aroma that oozes out of this restaurant.

Being a south indian and living in DDun for so long this has been the place we frequently visit.

The restaurant is pretty much always full and they are famous for their lip smacking dosas and vadas.

The other delicacies are also good . But the issue with the restaurant is lack of cleanness,

VERDICT : A DEFINITE PLACE TO VISIT AND HAVE GOOD SOUTH INDIAN FOOD!!
Niharika
Easy to reach and gud for stomach... Food served is tasty and not too expensive... In the hue n cry of paltan bazaar this is a good place to relax and chit chat with friends. The dosa served here is the best in the menu also along with south indian food some chinese has also been added to the menu. It has been years and still the taste and quality of food hasnt gone down.
Saumil Khanduri
When Paltan Bazaar drives you crazy, this is the place to relax. Ironically though, this place is always crowded. The reason - awesome food ! Just love the Chole Bhature, Sambhar Vada, Masala Dosa, Expresso coffee and Lassi.

I have grown up eating here and this place will always remain a favourite.

Lakshmi Restaurant is among the oldest and the most popular restaurants in town where people love to stop over whenever they come to Paltan Bazaar. It is not hard to locate the restaurant because the mouth-watering aroma of their meals will surely grab your attention.
Neha Kul
THis resturant is situated in between the paltan bazaar. and it is most favourite place for shoppers. When anybody tired and feeling hungry during shopping this place is worth. Most of the people go for south india here.Always crowed, and offer a south india chole bhature etc.Ambience is average.Food delivery is good. One can go for it to cool down hunger in between shopping ;)
Yuvraj Gupta
Heard a lot about this place so thought of visiting it... Super disappointed by the worse taste of South Indian dosas.... Not worth the price.... Must not try if you are looking for quality south Indian food....
Kumar Vaibhav Tanwar
Oh good heavens, tell them for what they are making is nothing but pathetic South indian food. The dosas are paper thin and extremely small with a bland potato mash in there. The sambar is a watery grave and there is only a grounded dal chutney to compensate for the essential coconut one.

There isnt much of a fare too except for vadas, idlis, masala dosa, cutlet and chowmein. This place is a passe and anyone knowing there dosa wont come here.

Lakshmi Restaurant is among the oldest and the most popular restaurants in town where people love to stop over whenever they come to Paltan Bazaar. It is not hard to locate the restaurant because the mouth-watering aroma of their meals will surely grab your attention. I have been visiting the restaurant since I was a kid and I have binged on their lip-smacking Masala Dosas and Chole with big Bhatooreys a lot. However, given that the restaurant is always full of people, you may have to wait a little till you finally get a seat for yourself. Also, the restaurant lacks in the cleanliness quotient and it offers nothing as far as the ambience is concerned. Nonetheless, if you want a meal that's tasty and is very reasonably priced even in today's date, then do visit it.

Tip: This is one restaurant which is always crowded. So be prepared to keep some cushion time especially if you visit around lunch hours, as you may have to wait longer than expected.
