Review Mullapanthal Restaurant - Ernakulam

John Chrysostom
We were at this Restaurant / Toddy Shop about a week ago to pickup food (lunch) for about seven persons. We arrived at about 1130 Hrs and noted that some items (rabbit and intestines) would be available only late in the afternoon. Generally speaking the food was good and everyone at home enjoyed it. We did have some leftovers, which we used for dinner. The place had hardly anyone drinking toddy. Looks like most of the guests were there for the food. Most of the them were sitting at eating at the restaurant two or three persons did takeout. Since the food is cooked in bulk and not done to order, there is nothing much that can be done about the spice level, when you order the food. But the bulk cooking does allow the food to absorb a lot of flavor and makes it really tasty.

The Mulapanthal Toddy Shop offers excellent food. The authentic flavors of their dishes, combined with reasonable prices, make it a worthwhile dining experience.

One of the rated and well known toddy shop in Ernakulam. The food is so spicy and tasteful which can be accompanied with Kerala toddy . But we were not satisfied with the toddy which was served, but the food was very nice. Might be crowded on holidays. Service is also better. parking is available nearby. NB : They don't accept card/UPI payments. Only cash is accepted.

Yummy food! Cheap prices. It all fulfilling spicy dishes. We tried Karimeen pollichathu, chemmeen roast, kera mulagitta curry, kappa kishangu. May be it’s the 10th time I have been here and trust me for last 10-12 years taste has been consistent ever!! Pearlspot fish pollichathu was good as well. I was expecting one fish but it was two. And the masala mix was yummy as well! Atmosphere..for a group which also run Arippa yet another restaurant for different kind of audience with awesome ambience they have kept it as it is.. like a toddy shop..

Must try spot.. Almost all the varieties of meats are available. Curries are little bit spicy. Reasonable rate and good food.. And also there is a lot of dining space too..

Food is simply amazing. Taste and quantity are equally good. The seating area could be made a little better since it gets really crowded at times and can cause suffocation with the heat. Apart from that, a must visit place if you’re looking for authentic kerala style spicy food.

Great food and very afordable. Do not expect any high level of ambience and amenities. Just a basic Kerala Toddy shop.

Had whole Karimean. One of the greatest lunches I've ever had anywhere in the world.

Omg this place is really amazing. ..the food they serve is mouthwatering spicy tasty..and I don't have words to describe.I went there with friends and we were given a family room ...don't expect cozy ambience. ..if u don't mind about ambience and all u need is spicy tasty food then it's ur place...this place is safe for both family and girls .Now let's talk about food ...we had kappa kakka fry kaada fry chemmeen and njandu curry(which we ordered last and our craving stopped us from taking its photo,..lol)the prices are really affordable ..all these food prices were below 100 (sorry tht I don't remember exact prices)..except kaada fry rest all were really tasty ..njandu and chemmeen were tooo spicy and I love eating spicy food ...overall the spiciness made our day ...I will never miss a chance to visit this place again. ..

Went with family and great expectation of typical taste of toddy shop dishes. We ordered pork, beef, Karimeen pollichathu, tapioca, kozhuva fry, prawns and chicken curry. None of the dishes dint even had average taste. Only thing we liked was mulaku chammanthi which went great with tapioca. Totally disappointed. Karimeen pollichathu was the worst.

We were here for lunch, we were given a family room. we ordered fresh toddy, prawns dry, crab dry and karimeen pollichathu, kappa and iddiappam. Everything was good especially the prawns was amazing . Overall it was a good experience.

The staff is very impolite and extremely rude and the food is generally spicey and not fresh. Please don't order fish cuisine's as it is not good at all.

A fantastic down-to-earth eating place in an out of the way part of Kochi called Tripunithura, about 45 minutes beautiful drive from Willingdon Island, through a quaint countryside, with manageable traffic.
What strikes out the moment you enter is the place is the respect and regard for the fairer sex, for fellow human beings, the care and friendly attitude of the hotel staff and patrons.
We ordered their big prawn(lobster really), squid, crab, small fish(tiny ones which can be chewed and eaten) and chicken dishes, as well as some appam and puttu to go with.
There is a dhaba flavour to their dishes, not the best in the world, but definitely worth a try.
What really tilts the balance is their toddy, a mild sweet and sour aromatic tinge in its flavour, a delectable drink at mid day, a bit akin to cider and a lot better than all the wines of the world.
And the owner graciously welcomed us to have a look at their kitchen, which uses firewood and no gas and employs elderly ladies as chefs.
It's a place with a difference! A must visit.

Amazing food everything that they make here tastes amazing but the servers don’t give a shit about customers. Please respect and serve your customers properly they just turn a deaf ear to many of our orders.

Very Homely food with great taste of Kerala ..if you want to try for Kerala cusine you should reach here and try your mouth. Non Veg and Veg available with immense parking and seating arrangements..best is to reach there only on weekdays.. Traditional toddy recipe's with full of mouth licking flavours

This is a place I've been longing to visit for quite a while. And boy fid this place live up to its expectation. Don't expect too much out of ambience. The plain simple canteen set up is how a toddy shop should. The food and toddy were all good. We spent almost a good 3 hrs there drinking and eating. If ur in kochi dont miss out on this. The only reason I'm giving it only 4 stars and not 5 is cuz quite a few things on the menu were not available for whatever reason.

Travelled quite a bit to reach this toddy shop one fine afternoon! They have limited parking space, so do get there early. They have a Air conditioned private seating as well as Non A.C. Well saying it is a family place would be quite a stretch. Yeah it’s shady, come expecting the worst and you’d go back home happy. The kallu served is by the kodam which is priced ₹160=4 glasses
Alright coming to the food, quick and good service. The duck roast was average, prawns and the pork was outstanding. They didn’t have crab that day sadly, paired it with some good Appams. The pricing is dirt cheap. Overall a decent experience! My best kallu shop experience will always be in karimpin taste land kottayam.

As legendary toddy shop from Kerala, I always want to visit this place. Got opportunity this time. We couldn't make it by lunchtime and we reach by 4 O clock evening. By the time fish head curry was over. Most of the dish got cold since they cooked before lunch.

We ordered
kappa (tapioca)
beef fry😛😝😜😝😛,
fish curry 😛😜😝
Kozhuva fry😛😜😝😜
Puttu

We didn't try toddy. I miss beef fry while writing this...😫...
Truly one of the best toddy shop in ernakulam what i liked the most was the tapioca and the pork curry 'ente mone kidilan sathanam'.
The tapioca with all the gravy from the fish curry and with combination of one piece of pork is like lit movement for any malayali

We were a gang of 8. Below was the Order

Toddy(Elaya Kallu)- 1 pot
Chemeen - 2 (It was Tasty so Doubled)
Karimeen Pollichatu - 2(Tasty😋, yes)
Beef curry - 1
Chicken Curry - 1
Meen Curry -1
Kappa - 6 and
Appam - not sure about quantity

Among the above items we didn't like beef the meat was tough to chew.

Our order was insanely late while our near by table orders were getting served quickly. Our waiter will go missing and we were repeatedly calling other waiters to remind our waiter for orders, while our hands were drying out.
In the end we have to cancel Kallumakkaya and one more Karimeen Pollichatu which we ordered.😏

No complain on food except Beef and remember all food are spicy that is the nature of Shap Foods

Very Pocket Friendly. It was just above 2.2K for 8 People no bill and also might be because there is no GST payable on Non-alcoholic Toddy.

Don't expect Ambiance and for family separate rooms are available.

Will Visit Again.

Went with Family on a Sunday, ordered below items.

Toddy(Elaya Kallu)- 1 pot

Chemeen - 1

Karimeen Pollichatu - 1

Beef - 1

Chicken Curry - 1

Kappa - 2

Kallumakkaya - 1and

Appam - 5

Among the above items we didn't like beef the meat was tough to chew, Kallumakaya and Karimeen Polichat was Good, Other items were Average.

Bill was cheap just 1200+

We have booked a family room but was not available when we reached so we went ahead with regular tables. There are lot of families so it was fine.

Cleanliness needs to be improved the glasses were not washed properly.

One good thing is you can walk in with family without any hesitation. W.r.t food just another restaurant with very spicy food.

Slightly Overrated.
(3.5/5)

One amongst the best toddy shops in cochin, love their food a lot more as i visit there often for the same. Their thani naadan style food preparation is really worth a try. Quality food at reasonable rates and there is ample space ( except when its crowrded which it mostly is😁 ) overall ,be it any day mullapanthal is a must try if you are in cochin.

My first visit to this place after moving to Kochi since last 4 months and I must say, truly relished the dishes of this place. Starting with the regular Kerala must-have dish Kappa Karimeen Curry and the dish wasn't disappointing at all. Kappa was well cooked and perfectly spiced up, to have as is otherwise. Meen Curry, prepared in Karimeen (Pearl Spot Fish), was at it's best, being the supporting dish to Kappa and the size of the fish is beyond what one can have, in normal terms (but I'm sure a Malayalee can finish it, in one go). The sides to this was Chemmeenu Fry a.k.a Prawns Fry 🍤. The mix of spices and hint of coconut just made this, finger licking. 😋 (For all those who hate dishes prepared in coconut oil, I bet you try this and let me know if you changed your mind or tastebuds otherwise).

If one has a bigger tummy to fill, can order some more else this would suffice per my suggestion. I went ahead with a Beef Fry and chapati. Beef was fried in oil and was mixed well with pepper and curry leaves. The taste was nothing less than foodgasmic! Amidst all this, the Toddy or locally known as Kallu, with its tangy spicy taste digested whatever I ate.

- Overall, taste wise - 5 ⭐ ( the chefs know the locals tastebuds)
- Service wise - 5 ⭐ (the servers know how to attend and to keep a tab on your bill amidst a huge crowd)
- Ambience - 2 ⭐ (as the place gets stuffy and smoky, when it's peak hour during lunch especially on weekends and not too great for ambience)
- Pocket friendly price - 3 ⭐ (Most of the dishes are reasonably priced but as we know that sea foods being locally sourced, the prices could have been slightly pocket friendly. You'll feel the pinch especially when you're going alone)

Best shap food in ernakulam.their karimmeen polichathu is famous. All dishes are spicy and yummy. Not a big ambiance.service is good.thala curry is my favourite item.
Vivek S Pillai
One of the most famous toddy shops in Kochi. Go there around afternoon and you'll have plenty of dishes to choose from. People who love naadan spicy food should definitely come here. I personally love the chemmeen and beef curry along with appam. This place is perfectly fine for families too. I'm taking one star off my rating for cleanliness. There are too many flies here and the place could be a little more tidy.
Best place to have amazing food and toddy. Their sea food was just awesome. Pocket friendly. Must go to when In Cochin. Clean place with private rooms and friendly staffs. ♥️

Heard a lot about this place from my college days, finally got a chance to try it out. This is the place where you can go with your family and eat, but you might be slightly concerned about the ambiance and cleanliness.

It gets crazy busy here and at peak hours you might have to wait for 30-45 mins to get a table and another 30-45 mins to get the food. But don't worry you can have a chit chat during this waiting period over a sip of cool toddy. The place serves really good toddy.

The place is known for the best and crazy spicy curries beef sea fish etc. You would be slightly put off with the ambiance and cleanliness though. But I would consider that only a part of the charm being in such a place.
You can enjoy a variety of dishes/meat like Beef, Pork, Kaada fry, rabbit roast, Kozhuva fry, clam meat, etc..

Definitely, a must try place for all meat lovers...😍😋
Manoj Venugopal
One of the best places to have sea food.

This place is similar to Moonrakers restaurant in Chennai-Mahabalipuram, provided you get only toddy here.

One of the best food I have had in Kochi. Though the place looks small and cramped, the food tastes amazing. We have tried almost all the fish items there and none them failed to amaze me.
Be sure to try there karimeen polichadu and chemmen roast for sure.

When our friends decided to come down to Kochi, we instantly knew that Mullapanthal Toddy Shop was THE place to give them a taste of Kerala. After all, Shaap food! 😏

Don't go by the appearance of this place. While the place might be lacking a decent ambience, it compensates in terms of food absolutely packed and loaded with flavors and spices, cooked in the most authentic way. 😍

Toddy so heavenly and sweet, it got some of us buzzed out of our minds, and we kept going for more.🥛 The beef roast and the pork roast were cooked to the right amount of tenderness. Karimeen Pollichathu was very delicately prepared and paired perfectly with the steaming hot and fluffy appams. The Chemmeen Fry, was by far the most phenomenal prawn preparation we've had. Cooked in coconut oil, the prawns were spicy and full of flavors. 🌴

We're definitely going to visit the place again during our next trip to try out some more mouthwatering delicacies 🤤

Not your traditional restaurant, it is mostly like a dhaba which locally has become famous. The food is brilliant with the tradition of Kerela. I don't like fish generally but changed my opinion after tasting it. I actually for the name but it comes wrapped in banayan leaf. The rice served is local Kerela grown so it's thick but with the other food it blends in. If you visit here you need to forget how to eat with knife and fork. USE WHAT GOD GAVE YOU (HANDS) :).
Also, alcohol is served but its local alcohol not anything else.
Beef and pork are also served.
Manu G Nair
👅🔥🔥🔥 that's the level of hot you get over dishes here. The only thing that's good is that you can enjoy the local alcohol with your family (yes, including ladies and kids). Meen pollichathu is yum.

After hearing many good reviews about this place from locals and tourists a like we headed there for lunch on a weekday.
There is ample parking and the place is not very hard to find. If you want a proper ‘Toddy Shop’ experience since out in the open or if with mixed crowd sit in one if the rooms. The place isn’t very clean and it’s run down and no one is in a hurry to fix things but you’re in a ‘Toddy shop’ after all. So take the ambiance with a pinch of salt.
All sorts of people are here so expect a few stares if you’re a women or are traveling with women but don’t worry no one will do anything.
The service is prompt and decent staff. Prices are economical and the ‘Toddy’ is sweet and fresh.
We tried several dishes and we liked all of them hence the rating.
The ‘Fish head curry’ though one of their more expensive dishes as it’s charged by weight (ours costed Rs 500) is worth a try if your looking for something very spicy yet flavourful and it was a huge portion that was ample for 4 People.
Rabbit Roast: it was a little bitter for me but I don’t really enjoy rabbit meat anyway but the others said it was quite good.
Calamari fry: it wasn’t over done and tasted good worth ordering
Anchovies: they were fried to perfection.
Even their accompaniments are good the ‘puttu’ is a must try.
If you’re looking to experience a Toddy shop this is the place to try we had several dishes with a litre of Toddy for Rs 1,100.
Arpit Augustine
Dont expect a fancy ambience. Toddy shop in Kerala is traditionally a place where workers after the day long work relax over a jug of toddy and some good side dishes.
But this particular place has slightly evolved with respect to more number of families visiting the place too.
I am not going to discuss about the food because if you want to try out authentic keralite food ( Non-Veg), one should definitely visit a toddy shop.
Yummy Supper
Great food.. And great experience.. Never think about service or ambience in toddy shops.. Because it's a "toddy shop". Never miss the fish mulagu curry also..

About Mullapanthal !!
We reached around 1.30pm and sat there for around an hour and half where the bearers were running around serving food. It was Sunday and we could not really expect the place to be hassle free. In another 10 minutes, that is around 3.20, Kappa, puttu, Kakka erachi and prawns reached. We had ordered appam but after waiting for another 10 mins, we decided not to ask for it. The beef reached and we sat and ate it all. The prawns roast was the best of all. I also liked Kakka erachi but the beef was full of liver. Kappa was just fine and puttu was also okay. We did not have kallu as we didn't feel to.

In short if you are planning to eat good naadan seafood with your family from a toddy shop, Mullapanthal is the right place. But one should also have the zest to wait. I guess it is better to come after the peak lunch hours so that the people need not wait for long.

Way to gooo !!
Sruthi Suresh
The only reason to give 3 stars is the poor service quality. We almost waited for more than an hour for the waiter guy to take our order and that too after a lot of complaining. Yes, the shop was crowded, but then we had been whining for a long time and yet nobody came. This was quiet annoying. Finally the guy who was sitting opposite to us showed some mercy and requested the waiter guy to take order.

We had ordered prawns, beef and kakka along with kappa, puttu and appam. Appam never made it to our table. Guess they were out of it. So we had to satisfy our tummy with the other things. About the food, out of everything that we ordered the best thing was Prawns. The spices, ginger and garlic everything had blended so well with the prawns that it tasted really good. The taste of tamarind added more flavour!

The kakka was good and it was fried pretty well. Then about the beef, I wasn't satisfied. The beef chunks were really hard and it was very difficult to eat. And it had many liver pieces. Best for those who love liver. The puttu and kappa were alright.

The price is very much reasonable. But I guess its not the best place to go during a weekend if you are really hungry. It takes a lot of time.
Phenomenal World
Toddy has always been a quintessential part of any coastal place and Kerala is no exception. I have also heard in the grapevine that bars may also start selling this (not sure how much is the vine broken though). I love drinking toddy both in the fresh form (Neera) and the fermented one which gives a good swing and makes u feel rummy indeed. For a previous post on toddy click here

Mullapanthal Toddy Shop (or shaap as its called in the local lingo) has setup a place for families where the complete family including the woman folks can come and drink as well. There are separate rooms (some even have AC's) for them. It's no wonder the place always has customers and most of them families.

The food makes an exquisite combination with the toddy. Make sure to ask for the fresh one or you might get the fermented one

Ambience of the Mullapanthal Toddy Shop
Nicely maintained and the kitchen was clean.Normally at these places, cleanliness is the last thing on the mind right? A local shop can scare you senseless if you have an OCD for cleanliness :D

What we ordered at Mullapanthal?
Boiled Tapioca and Fish curry - This is a popular combo all across kerala (among the non veggies). The fish curry was absolutely brilliant. With the flavor of the kodam puli (dried cocum) and hit of chillies this was mind blowing
Pork Fry - Exquisitely done pork and the combination of pieces and fat was just right
Mutton Liver - Beautifully done but unfortunately I am not much of a liver person.
Prawns - Brilliant prawns. Kerala and especially a shaap can never get prawns wrong.
Toddy - Duh !! Here is how it is served :-)
Enjoy the glimpses. Click on each for higher resolution

Toddy and tapioca the staple food of KERALA ... a very gem toddy parkour offers you the ambience to visit with family ..Great food with all nadan curries and good toddy which is not adulterated and private seating area. One of those few toddy shops where u can be with your family .
Sreejith V Pawar
If you are not from Kerala and want to try all the flavours of Kerala- this is the place guys !! Dont go with the name. Though it’s a toddy shop you can see number of friends and family coming out here.
Must try all the dishes and specially toddy!!
Outstanding and so tasty. Will recommend to try once.
5 star 🌟

Some super spicy and super awesome food. Made in the traditional Kerala way. I reduced the rating to 4 since I personally feel that the quality of the food has gone down a bit over the years. But still overall an extremely affordable place which serves gobsmacking good food. The meen thalacurry is the undisputed champion here.
Yaseen Habeeb
The best place to hang out with ur buddies. They have the amazing "madhurakallu" in morning. The food is top notch, especially rabbit and seafood.
Kevin Cornelio
Biggest mistake I did was going in the evening at 7 or so. Nothing was left other than toddy and a fish curry which was just OK. Toddy was good. But really missed the much talked about sea food here. Place is lil unclean. Just like how a toddy should world be. I went with my wife traveling a long way just to taste the food here. Can't say anything more since I dint get to have the food here. May be next time when I'm in kochi...
Shinoj Bhaskaran
Went with family. As the place was not at all hygienic, I got the food parceled.

The duck curry was not edible at all because the black pepper was completely burnt. The mussel fry taste was average but it had lot of sand – probably it was not cleaned properly.

I also had got rabbit curry, that was also pathetic.

Overall a very bad experience. In my view, it is avoidable.
Hari Ramanathan
Really awesome food!! Duck and chicken curry was well cooked and mouth watering, those two curries along with chappati and puttu was heavenly. Spicy prawns was of different level, highly satisfying. Kozhluva fry was crispy and yummy, overall it was a wonderful experience and best food in kochi.
Ashwin Mohan
went at the far end of the day ,sadly there wasn't much left ,had kappa(tapioca) with liver curry and two karimeen (pearlspot) polichathu(wrapped in banana leaf and cooked)...and yes some toddy as well . toddy was first class ,unusual for an evening in kerala.the fish was also quite decent ,but I would say Kuttanad shaaps will beat it hands down.kappa was good.liver curry was quite different.overall need to visit again to do justice to the menu , 350 bucks for a fish.a little expensive.locally should try nettoor shop also and decide.

This has been my most delightful review, out if all my other reviews! Sceptical to try a toddy shop I gave into someone's wish, only for the sake of the finger licking food here,I was hell bent on not walking inside because it's a toddy shop! But I did walk in after much hesitation, the inside is totally a place surrounded by youngsters, families and friends. It's a different atmosphere for a toddy shop, the food is however the headline here. If you are in KERALA KOCHI,YOU HAVE TO TRY THIS PLACE for their toddy and their food.We had the meen pollichattu, the currymeen curry, kappa, chemeen fry, shell fry, chamandi and rice along with toddy, just so if you don't understand the names of the food above, you have a better reason to check this place out! I went in hesitant and I came out super happy! one word to describe the food.... Delicious!
Haridas Menon
Well known for its toddy and sea food, this place does not disappoint. This is the place if you are a great fan of sea food and local Kerala delicacies and you do not mind the stench of coconut toddy. (alcohol). You may compare it an affordable wine and dine restaurant. Make sure you have a teetotaler in your group in case you wish to taste the toddy as all the delicacies are strongly flavoured (those chillies may force you to sip the sweet toddy) and the Kerala traffic police will not spare you for drink and drive. There are students, women and children also who gladly visit this place for the food. They have hired a few parking lots nearby.
Smijin Sarangadharan
I'll give 5 star, because the food is so yummy and the place is so good for family and kids. The ll give separate rooms for family and couples.
You ll get surprised after knowing the price of the foods, its so cheap and yummy.
Binoy Xavier
The best place to hangout with frnds and family.
Yummy and tasty food. Only problem is that they don’t have enough space to accommodate every customer.... else it’s a 5 star.😘
Linsho Thottappilli
Delicious food and toddy. Everyone need to taste their sea food and kappa. Excellent provision for familiea. If u dont want to have toddy at their place, can get parcel. Authentic taste.
Celestine
One of the best places to have good quality toddy.. Great food is a bonus.. Ambience is that of a traditional toddy shop - so it's a relative whether that's a pro or a con.. Parking facilities are almost non-existent.. A much better toddy experience is available but it's far from Kochi.. Hence 4/5 as it's one of the best experiences available within Kochi..
Aneesh C K
good food, lot of variety, thala curry, kappa and squid are awesome. ambience is not like a restaurant ( since it's a toddy shop, can't help) if you aren't into spicy food, give it a skip. curries are really hot, I love it.
Punksralive
Kakka fry and meenthala curry was the best ..one of the best toddy shops in Kerala ..the only problem is thers no much seating space and you have to wait a lot for each order
Satheesh Mohan
Best option for nadan foods . They got separate family room. We went on Sunday and it was crowded. Sunday you have to wait to get seated .Sure there will be a queue. So prefer other weekdays.. you will get toddy and service was not bad
Aswathi Sudhir
Karimeen pollichath and I share a very special bond ;) I haven't declined it in the past 20 years. This place just served us with the best ever tasted #karimeen pollichath.
A combination of their meen thala curry (a dish made with the head of a big fish) and tapioca was like a match made in heaven.
Not an ardent fan of toddy and so haven't had much of it before.. this one from here tasted gud. Service was excellent. The only problem I felt with this place was the lack of enough car parking space.

One of the finest Toddy shop in Kochi. Use google map to find the location for people who are new to the area. They have ample parking facility but it's a bit away from the toddy shop. Coming to the food it's simply mouth watering and delicious. People who are crazy about shaapu curry this is the place to be. They have separate cabins non AC and one AC cabin as well. Highly crowded most of the time. Meen thala curry, kakka, karimeen, beef, kappa, thaaravu everything is just perfect. Highly recommend this place.

Dishes are tasty, not too expensive too. Ordered Toddy which was sweet and tempting, Crab roast, Natholi Fry, Kappa, Fish thala curry (OMG how can a fish head be this huge!!) and squid. We thoroughly enjoyed everything except Squid roast which had intense aroma of seafood and we didnt find it fresh.

Ambiance is okay, staffs are friendly too. We did not find this place so hygienic though (may be becoz we went there in rainy season or may be they are trying to maintain the restaurant like a typical toddy shop)

AGFAB? care for the 'real Kerala' feel? Pissed you can't go to the local toddy shop? Your search ends here.
It'll help if you have someone along that speaks Malayalam, you'll manage just fine so long as you don't have any dietary restrictions. (I ordered fried fish but was served beef liver fry).

Went for their toddy, stayed for their food.

My friend in kochi got us to this place 15 min from the city
First thing u get is the strong smell of toddy
Pungent , coconutty .you can have a few sips but not to my liking.
Then came the main part of this restaurant
THE KARIMEN POLLICHATU- pearl fish was amazing
We had kappa-tapioca
Prawns , oysters , beef roast, duck

The winners- beef roast, duck( though tough to eat)
Fish head curry

To my bad the rabbit was not yet cooked
The staff is very generous
Aunty even took me to the kitchen to show how they made the food

Very clean place 😝
Not for the weak hearted

Ps- they have small rooms for family and friends
Been a here a couple of times, never disappointed in the food, ambience and the toddy. This place has successfully captured a mix of both age old toddy shops and a new age service to people of all ages.

Beef Fry is heavenly! MullaPanthal will take your mind to a mass kitchen and serving and of course the availability of toddy is a bliss ,i wished they made porota. Tried everything, the food is great, you won't repent for a penny. Prawns were extra sour. It's not the place where you'll taste the dame gravy in multiple items, everything is unique. Menu for your reference.Have fun!

It's the place for every food lover... All the dishes will blow u wid it's taste... Been there on my last visit to kochi... Karimeen fry, kaka fry, duck curry, beef fry, mussel fry, aapa, Kappa all are awesome here..not the place for great ambience but still there is privacy with separate cabins not just normal thatukadda.. Extremely good service..
A definite place for all the food lovers..

Came here because of the hype about this place. It's a popular place among youngsters and a family-friendly toddy shop. The food is good, the service is good and the place is usually crowded. Maybe the reason there's a lot of hype is because there aren't that many family-friendly toddy shops around. Had karimeen pollichath and appam from here. Was good.

Went to this place hearing get reviews.. but it was such a disappointment...
Food was cold and not tasty. No proper billing and they don't accept cards.

Later enquiries let me to understand that the place used to be great.. but now due to certain reasons, their quality of food has gone down...

This is an experience you will not get anywhere else in the world. A true Keralam experience!

Although the ambiance, hygiene and seating will be an issue for most. But the food makes up for all of these issues.

There is no written menu to order from, but you will get all authentic sea foods like - karimeen pollichatu, squid, clamp, crab, etc. Also some local varieties of pork, beef duck, etc. Usually these will be bit too oily, but this is not for health conscious.

Also try some toddy, but I don't endorse.

I visited for lunch tried, kappa , fish curry, Karimeen fry, beef fry, liverfry, kakka fry, kappa, puttu and toddy..... I must say food was delicious .....pricingwise one of the cheapest place in Kochi for seafood , service was excellent, ambience I would say is not great, parking is available little far though.... overall great experience and a must try ...

Location isn't easy to find, if you are new to this area. But if you have the google map service, getting there isn't a hard job. Parking space is an issue to be considered seriously by the shop owners. Seating capacity for the customers is luxurious. Food tasted good and pocket friendly. Service is ok. Toddy served is of good quality.

One of best place to get some spicy non-veg.. Variety and quality of the food is excellent. The environment there is quite pleasant and people are really friendly.

5 stars for the food. The location and ambience may not be great for an outsider. But I'll tell you that the wait and effort is worth the food that you'll be served with. You'll keep on trying and eating different varieties of food and will be astonished by the small bill. The way they handle accounts is a beauty in itself.

Transforming a Toddy shop into a family food place is a masterpiece, food was ok, tried Kakka meat fry, Karimeen Pollichathu, Kappa.. Food was tasty, Economical too. Put off is the place, they can make it far better in terms ambience, cleanliness and convenience. Parking is way too inconvenient, also saw many waiting to get their table. For a non-malayalee, can be a good experience, can even try Nattu Kallu (local toddy).

We were a party of 9 and had an awesome time at the toddy shop. The fish head was the highlight of our lunch. We had ordered clams fry, beef fry, kappa (tapioca) and puttu. The service here was quick and the food delicious, far better than most resorts in Kerala. We skipped the tour of the kitchen because we were busy eating and drinking, (this place started of as a licensed Kallu / toddy shop). Apparently the kitchen does not use modern mixer grinders to grind their spice mixes, evident in the chilly chutney they provided at the start of the meal. Amazing place, great food and family friendly service.

Meh. The food I ordered was too spicy, but appropriate if you have downed a bottle of Toddy (the Kallu was just passable- took some home and had to deal with the worst smelling appams the next day). The ambience is better than a typical Kallu shop, but not all that great. Parking is a huge issue.

Is a Toddy shop the best place to enjoy Kerala cuisine?!!! Anyways, I did not find anything special about the food served there. Maybe am wrong! Parking was a problem and top of that I had to deal with their watchmen's nasty attitude. Would never go there again! There are much better places in town!!!

Was on a family trip to Kerala from Mumbai. Had heard about this place from from several sources. Was lucky to get a place for family of 4 pretty easily. Awesome food. Spicy flavourful, oily (in the robust way). Prawn fry, beef fry and the banana-leaf wrapped kari meen were heavenly. Tried toddy for the first time. Avoidable for me but thats more to do with my taste for toddy n not this place. If u r in and around this place, it would be criminal not gorge on the food in this place.

It's the spicy, flavourful, and oily heaven for non vegetarian lovers. No wonder this has become a legendary foodie paradise. We were a family with two kids and accommodated into the family room. It was late afternoon and oh boy the menu card was so tempting. We started with the best prawn fry and prawn roast dishes that I have ever had (besides that made by my mom). Karimeen pollitchathu had all the flavours packed in but was too oily to my liking. The best was the crab masala and the fish fried in garlic. The kappa and barracuda head curry (thala curry) packed with kodampuli(brindleberry or pot tamarind) flavour and chilly powder was out of this world. Ensure you have the stomach for the extra spice. There is no adulterated color or masala. It's the local flavour that overpowers your taste buds. The service was quick and efficient. The toddy shop setting and the smell can be revolting when you enter the cramped family room (0.5 marks goes down due to the hygiene and ambience). Do not miss for the experience and the local flavour

No other place to compare to. This is the best shap food you could get. Been there multiple times and never have I had any disappointment. Once I went there with my British friends. They had toddy and even tasted frog fry. Too good... Too yummy

Its not fine dining ... so don't expect a nice ambiance. It's a well explored toddy shop that even family members can be taken to. The toddy and food here is amazing. That we had reserved the place in advance was a smart move, because it can get really crowded. We had 2 jugs of toddy ( heavenly.. sweetly sour, and you crave for the next sip as soon as you have one. ..) duck, pork, chicken, prawns, appam, kappa(tapioca), all were mouth watering and had authentic rural Kerala's taste!
Service was quick and friendly. As soon as you are seated, you will be asked for your choice of food and usually it is brought within 10 minutes. But the heavenly toddy takes the crown.. well, after all it is a toddy shop! :)
If you are in Kochi/ Ernakulam, this place is a must visit

I have bookmarked this spot a very long time ago. Always wanted to take a visit but the shop is far away from the city. But this time thought of taking a chance and visited this place. It was a Sunday noon and we reached there around 2.30pm. The place was damn crowded. We literally stood for around 1 hour outside a room. The food was ok. Nothing much like I expected. Puttu was dry. Pork had no flesh but fat. Prawns was so good. Squid was a failure. Chicken curry was good and kappa too. It was very hot and was really hard to handle the heat inside the shop.
