Review Subhiksha - Kochi (Cochin)

VIJAY SABU
A budget-friendly hotel in Ernakulam, Kerala, India. It is popular among travelers looking for a clean and comfortable place to stay at an affordable price. The hotel is also known for its pure vegetarian restaurant, which serves a variety of South Indian dishes. The staffs are friendly and helpful. The restaurant is excellent, and the food is delicious. The hotel is also a good option for families, as it offers spacious rooms and a variety of amenities. Ample car parking space..

Still keeping the quality of food and service same as that in many years back. Since my childhood I occasionally visit this hotel for food. During childhood visited along with my parents and as an youngster with my friends and later with my wife and children. Amazingly all these years they keep the quality of food high. Keep it up 👏👏

Me and my wife recently stayed here. All I would say is this. Better than staying at fort Kochi stay here and visit fort Kochi and other multiple places around Ernakulum from here as location is its best point (whether boat jetty or Ernakulum shiva temple or railway station or garden and marine drive to stroll around or to go to Bolgatty palace) Staff is very good and you will get a great Appam here from one of the old uncle here who makes really great Appams and other food is also very good (it’s a pure veg restaurant) Thank you BTH looking forward for our next stay again

Its very old & traditional restaurant in Eranakulam. If you are a vegetarian i highly recommend this place. Meals are so good and taste like our homely food. One meal coast you around 230 Rs. Considering the quality and quantity of food served its worthy. They also have a good customer service.

Lovely place. We have stayed there some years ago when we were in Trivandrum. Location is superb; calm and beatiful. The service is good, the food is good. I and my family enjoyed the food.

The hotel is very good and beautiful. The food tastes good and is served hot, but a little costly. I am not able to tell much about the staff as when, I phoned to the reception asking for help on connecting to the wifi, they said the wifi isn't there, even though it was being shown in my available wifi list. I felt it a little odd. Even though it was just a night stay, they should have provided the wifi, but they denied.

Our daughter's first birthday was celebrated here in saubhagh banquet hall. We are very happy with the service provided. Very supportive staff, food was good as well.

It's a neat and tidy high class veg hotel serving delicious and hygienic foodstuff. In Kochi, you can hardly find a vegetarian restaurant of this excellence
Raja Iyer
Hotel and rooms are good. Food is also good but it's highly overpriced. Plus you don't get fruit juices or fruit based milkshakes in the hotel. It's ok if one prefers overpriced vegetarian food. Else is better to look at other options. It looks as though that hotel management is covering up for the economical rates for the rooms with the high cost for food

Such a good garden was there and plants inside. But we got our order a little late. There was children's park also and good sofas chairs and rooms.

Delicious food at their restaurant... excellent service and nice behaviour of the staff...

It's an amazing place for vegetarians. They serve tasty food and the service is also great.

It was a torture. Its already hard to find good pure veg restaurant in kerala and this restaurant bth subhiksha is forcing vegetarians to go non-veg restaurants for enjoying dinner with your family.
About the food where should I start, does its chef know what is a sambar 120 masala dosa(should be a north indian chef), had no flavor only red chilli powder in it. There was no difference between paneer lababdar, shahi paneer, jalfrezi and malai ( Lababdar is supposed to be masala gravy with cream paste in it) 220. The paneer served in curry burned. veg jaipuri was a joke, felt like they added the raita vegs to some cream masala gravy 220. the rice quality of 220 pulav was horrible fat thick oily rice.
Me and dad always come for lunch here which is nice. This is first time we all came for dinner here. I dont understand after having such a nice fine dining restaurant at a great location with nicely designed menu with expensive rates( no problem I'll pay for good experience) food is ridiculous disappointing. I felt like screaming at the restaurant since its a Christmas eve I controled. They should immediately fire its executive chef and appoint a chef, who has some sense of good cooking. I'll pay 350 for each items please serve good food. It seems like Bhindavan restaurant is the only option to go for dinner with family in kochi.

Went here without any expectations. My Friend who took me here told its costly restaurant so my expectations was obviously tasty food.

Our order 2 set Poori Masala, 1 Masala dosa, 1 Dosa, 1 Dahi vada and 4 coffee total bill is 660.
One positive is coffee. 2 Pooris doesn't serve the justice for 100 rupees paid. Dahi vada got positive feedback from my friend.

Breakfast Buffett is Rs.250. But In Breakfast buffet they won't provide dosa, Poori items, only traditional foods like Puttu, appam, Boiled banana.

After food we thought it's good that we didn't went for Buffett.

Verdict: Costly Average food.

On my Kerala Tour this season, I set my priority to visit this so hyped restaurant in Cochin famous for its Banana Leaf Meal.
I must state that the food was really amazing and the staff was courteous.
One should definitely visit the restaurant to experience the Kerala taste!

Food - 4/5
Ambience - 3/5
Service - 4/5
Value for money - 3.5/5

It is unfortunate how one of the best place for vegetarian food has come down over the years. During my childhood this was my go to place. However, my last visit here, after many years, did not go well. The quantity and more the quality of food was not great. The service was not great either. The AC was working? I don’t know. Anyway this was once one of the best.

Subhiksha is a great place for all wanting vegetarian food. Located at the BTH hotel, it provides for good accomodation for people visiting Kochi along with tasty, authentic vegetarian food.

We were there for lunch the other day. The staff are extremely warm and welcoming and quick to explain their menu and daily specials.

So they have Vegetarian leaf meals (South Indian) priced at Rs. 250 and Vegetarian buffet (South + North Indian) priced at Rs. 300. We obviously took the latter since there were mixed cravings and the price difference was quite insignificant.

The buffet comprised of choice of a soup (tomato/celery), breads to choose from (naan/roti/chappati), variety of salads, North Indian curries comprising palak paneer, channa masala, aloo bhindi, South Indian curries comprising sambar, rasam, thoran, avial, etc. There was vegetarian biryani as well as white rice to choose from. The daily special was Pasta Arrabiata and it was okay. Desserts included wheat payasam plus another sweet.

The buffet definitely has a lot of options and the price is the best. The quality of food is exceptional with a great taste to it. The entire place is maintained well and very clean, which definitely made the dining experience most contentful.

VFM: 4/5

Poori masala, Idli, Coffee and Soda lime... That's what we had for Rs.300. On top of that the food was bland. For the quality of food served it should cost us only 50% of that!! Supposed to be a 3 star hotel.. but from which angle I have no idea!! Pathetic.. Indian coffee house serves tastier food than you people.

This place serves amazing coffee (both hot and cold) and south indian food.
Uttapam was very tasty. We did not like Poori Masala. Toast with bread and jam was decent. Cold coffee with ice cream is recommended.

I liked the food and the ambience of the place. Surprisingly, I didn't have the much sought after sadya. I opted for chana bhatura and wasn't disappointed. Since I liked the people and the place so much, I'm certainly returning - especially for the special sadya.

After a long time had a chance to visit BTH again with family. Always the first choice to have a traditional Kerala lunch (sadya) on plantain leaf....for Keralites staying outside Kerala, this is always welcoming and kinda nostalgic....ambience is ok and taste as usual is superb...neat, good and fast service....definitely a must stop for all vegans....just one shortcoming .... the price was a bit on the high side...that's my opinion.....

On my recent trip to Kochi, I visited this place for just one thing, the “Sadhya”.
Sadhya is a traditional meal of Keralites. It contains several dishes, pickles served on a banana leaf.
Here at Subhiksha, a Sadhya meal costs ₹250 per head and can be refilled unlimited times (Personal experience- you get full in 2 refills).
After the meal they serve you the traditional sweet of Kerala called “Payasam”, something unique for a North Indian like me (I’ve shared the picture below)
The ambiance is really quiet and gentle. Hospitality is really professional and comforting.
They also offer buffet Lunch which is really good.
I’d highly recommend this place if you’re anytime soon traveling to the God’s own country and want to create some really sweet memories of authentic Kerala food.
You can follow my food journey on my Instagram food blog @homeforhungry and stay connected with me there!
Thank you.

Subhiksha is one of my favorite veg restaurants for the last few decades. Once I was a regular to Subhiksha in mid 80's when I was posted in Kochi for 3 years and recently I visited the place last week and recalled the olden days of having my favourite dishes. Happy to know that they could manage to retain the same taste, flavour and service to their regular customers.
I have grown up with BTH. But today's BTH is a far cry from yesteryear's. Case in point Subhiksha. The food is expensive. The service is atrocious. A simple Dahi Vada is a diaster. I have never been more disappointed.
Harish Varier
Service poor 0/5
Ambience 1.5/5
Staff 1/5
Rate high (breakfast) compare to other veg hotels. Not much menus available. Just dosa, idli, poori .
Decided to visit subhiksha today with my mom since last few times we went there, the food was good.
I ordered puttu kadala and my mom ordered chapathi and curry.
After 15-20 minutes the food was served.
Puttu lacked salt, and I doubt if they put salt at all in it.. And puttu is not something, to which we can add salt separately and eat. It just has to be cooked properly. We told the waiter, but he was not prompt to take it away and bring us proper food. And kadala too did not taste upto the mark. Pappad was also served with it, which made it possible for me to eat it.

Regarding chapathi curry, the curry was served cold, no idea why it was not heated before it was served. The chapathi was good though.

To sum up, the food was not worth the money they charge. The food is overpriced and the quantity served is not proportional to its rates.

Had leaf meals fir lunch. Excellent meals. Unlimited. Might be crowded. Parking is available. Meals had almost every thing. Had payasam also as dessert.

This is one of the oldest restaurants in the city and in its heydays used to command a premium clientele. However, with the advent of other new generation restaurants as well as evolving tastes of the people, the restaurant in its current form and shape is at par with a middle category restaurant in any place.

We went here on a Saturday evening after a temple visit. Though my wife's family used to be regulars at this place some time back, it was my first visit. Being a pure veg restaurant and from the guests around, seems like a large chunk of the customers head straight here from the temple. The location therefore is an inherent advantage for the place.

We had masala dosa, paper roast, onion uttappam and veg biryani. The quality and taste of all these was good, with the masala of the masala dosa deserving a special mention. The accompanying chutney and sambhar with the dosas also had the right mix of spices and condiments to give that perfect taste. The biryani and the raita that accompanied it tasted like homemade, with no excess spices/ add on ingredients. The biryani certainly was very different as compared to a north Indian biryani or for that matter a typical Kerala biryani but it stood out for its simple preparation. The quantity was also just right.

The service is pretty quick and the staff are helpful and courteous.

The only low rating I would give would be for the ambience which can be improved. The current one with an overkill of blue doesn't suit such a restaurant.

There is ample space outside the restaurant for sitting and relaxing. Being part of a hotel's ground floor has its obvious advantages. Parking space also is quite sufficient.

Overall, definitely worth a second visit the next time we are around in Kochi.
Subhiksha is a part of the BTH hotel. The hotel is known for their pure vegetarian food and they are pretty famous for their lunch meals on the banana leaf. This is the traditional Kerala lunch and can never go wrong. My parents and I decided to go for this and this was delicious. It's 250 rupees per head and the food is unlimited. Also, they have a choice of white rice or boiled rice as well. We also had the idly, chapati and curry and puttu here and these tasted decent too. If you want to try the traditional Kerala sadyam, do give this a try :)

Confused waiters... Don't know their own menu. Ive been having Ghee masala dosa here for years and this guy tells me they don't have that on the menu.

As a child, I remember this was my goto place for breakfast on a weekend. Place is still clean, as compared to the rest of the restaurants in the same league. Consistent, if nothing else.

Pretty bad food and the dal curry was burnt one the restaurant is neat though the meals which I eat was a sub standard one with no good curries at all

I have been to this restaurant innumerable times since my childhood. Whenever I am in Ernakulam, I make it a point to visit BTH and dine at this restaurant at least once.

The restaurant, which serves only vegetarian food, is known for its meals, idlis, vadas and dosas. They also serve reasonably good north Indian food. I have seen many a loyal clientele who would only stay and dine at BTH.

This time, I visited Subhiksha in the evening. I wanted to have something cold and have a small snack after my evening walk. Unfortunately, my favourite veg cutlets (with lots of ketchup) were sold out. Anyway, I was happy sitting in this restaurant and sip a Fresh Lime Soda and Sweet Lassi.

PS: Probably the only thing I want to change in this restaurant is their decor. It is loud with garish blue prints on the wall. Can they make this subtle in terms of colour and decor?

The only reason this restaurant has 1.0 rating is since Zomato does not allow a ZERO rating. I went to this restaurant with my family (7 people) after getting recommendations from locals on Jan 7th evening. My daughter has severe food allergies. We requested the waiter - multiple times - to let us talk to the Chef. He said that this was not possible but that he would inform the kitchen/chefs about all our concerns and allergy requirements. After a long discussion we ordered mixed vegetables, Dal Fry and plain rice for my daughter. After taking a teaspoon of the Daal my daughter starting feeling queasy. Soon she was throwing up and had an anaphylactic reaction. We all left our meals to take care of her and took her to the emergency room of the Medical Trust hospital after giving her an EpiPen injection. The restaurant staff, at first would not even admit that there were any nuts in her meal. I left the restaurant and had to talk to the manager in charge at night. He finally admitted that there is Cashew paste in the Daal and that the restaurant staff were not admitting this. The behavior of the waiter and the restaurant staff was deceitful and they clearly had no awareness of food allergies or their seriousness. The manager told me that the entire staff had been trained to look out for four major allergens including nuts. Well, the training means nothing at this hotel, because the restaurant staff clearly does not understand the purpose of the training.

I would strongly recommend against visiting this restaurant. They clearly have no quality control and no way to accommodate people with food allergies.

FOR THE LUNCH (KERALA SADYA), it might be the best place in Kochi. Amazing taste for all veg curries and yummy payasam all for 160 Rs. I haven't been there for any other meals but this was really awesome. The service was outstanding as we dont need to call them as they will understand even before. Best place fofr vegetarian lovers.

June 2018 review:
Best Kerala meals in the city!

December 2016 review:
Amazing dosas. The best dosas in Kochi when made well. Coffee is ok too. I like having breakfast from here before going on long trips. I want dosas from here when I want dosas!
Venkateswaran Balan
The rating is only for their awesome lunch meals. I had been regular here way back in 2004. But even now the taste is just awesome. For Rs.160 their unlimited meals is just takes you home. The hygiene of wash area etc need improvement. The staff were really good and understanding.

After Tasting food from BTH KEMPU... I wouldnt Risk myself spending my money ON "OVER-PRICED TASTELESS FOOD" in BTH SUBHIKSHA...

My Advice:
Search in google for some other good restaurants...
This place got BRAND NAME made by old generations..........
Now in 21st Century.... ....." TASTE.. NO Way !!!!!"

Wooooh .....Zomato.....its been a long long time.
Its been a while. At present I've put a pause on my food journey, something else matters me now...hehe....well, fortunate or lemme say, its quite unfortunate that I found a restaurant to checkin and review of.
Well, I had my breakfast from here. Masala Dosa. It was just fine. Didn't reach my expectations. It was quite any ordinary kind. The impression created by this place was not maintained by the food they served. I really expected more. Chutney was average. Masala was just fine. I felt nothing special about this one.
In the bottom line, i feel, this is an okay type restaurant. Just that
Chandrakant Parikh
Nothing to recommend overall. One of the filthiest hotels existing in Kerala. Colege Messes have better cleanliness. It has to be seen to be believed. Kempu restaurant is also on the ground floor and is similarly filthy. I only went here because a client had a meeting here, after which I was treated to one of the most disgusting buffet lunches I have ever seen. I had only a soup and a pasta, as the main course looked absolutely appalling. Both were tasteless. The staff are either rude or nonchalant. No idea why this place is so popular. Visit at your peril.
Justin Prasad
Subhiksha is a good vegetarian restaurant inside BTH Hotel,Kochi. Vegetarian buffet breakfast/lunch/dinner options are available here. Good place to visit with friends and family. Ambience and service is good. They have ample parking area. Value for money. Try it out.

This is one of the group hotels of BGR Hotels, which owns the famous BTH chain of Hotels.

My current review is for dine in restaurant “Subhiksha” Vegetarian restaurant.

As the name says it all, this is a pure vegetarian joint located on the Durbar Hall road in Ernakulam.

I did visit this place for around 3 times during my stay in Kochi for Lunch & Dinner.

If you are here on a weekend, do try their Buffet meal, which comprises of both South Indian & North Indian, i was here on a Sunday for Dinner and did try their Buffet meal, which was quiet good priced at 220.00 for an adult & 120.00 for a child.

Also, i would highly recommend the range of Dosas available @ BTH, especially the Onion Uthappams are too good.

Talking about the North Indian items tried here, i was happy with their gravy preparation as compared to the other restaurant owned by the same group.

About the Tandoori items, it was an ok affair, can be prepared & served better.

Chinese items were a kind of OK, about the pricing front, all the items are moderately priced.

Very good mallu vegetarian food ..payasam is excellent. Side accompaniments also good. Good south Indian malayalam veg thali ! I gave it a 4

I have been to BTH so many timess..I love this restaurant of theirs as well as the Kempu, the coffee shop..Subhiska is always crowded during the lunch..U will find it hard to find a place..But i really like their lunch served in Banana Leaf..The service is fast..The quality is good..Again at times, the tastes can change much btw days..But its a good try for Kerala Sadhya.

We went to BTH with great expectations as many people vouched for this hotel for Keralian food. It was a disappointment in terms of availability and taste. We tried following things.

Masala Dosa (3.5/5) - Well if you go wrong in making masala dosa in south India then you're in terrible soup. Luckily it wasn't bad. It was how it is supposed to be.

Cutlet (2.5/5) - It was a beetroot cutlet with lots of garam masala and less salt. I don't like food with extra garam masala and avoided it after a biteful of it.

Butter Roast Dosa (4/5) - Again nothing extraordinary and I was not even expecting anything extraordinary. It was good.

Idli (3.5/5) - By the time I ate it, it had gone cold. Sambhar was forgetful and only saving grace was the fresh coconut chutney.

Filter coffee (2.5/5) - Well I have had better filter coffees at houses than this. It wasn't authentic filter coffee. It was like instant coffee.

The main thing that irritated us was the unavailability of Appam, Idiyappam, Puttu and also Wada. It was very frustrating to not eat what you actually wanted to.
Sarath Gopi
We ordered chana batura, panner butter masala, chapathi nd American chopsuey.
Chana nd panner masala almost good.aftr tht come to american chopsuey - below the average level .The hospitality and the ambiance is upto level A,but the stuff :(

As far as generic vegetarian food is concerned, this place isn't bad. All the curries have a sweetness to them. Meals are decent and desserts are not bad. They won't let you down.

I visited Subhiksha during a day trip to Marine drive in Kochi and it turned out to be one of the better places to have a Kerala style Sadhya.

We were a group of 5 and had to wait a while before we could get a table. However, once we were at the table the service was lightning fast. You have to buy a coupon at the counter before hitting the table. The waiting area is down the hall on the inside so make sure you go there and wait. I had to figure this out on my own.

The overall quality and value for money of the food was great and it was interesting to see that they served warm herbal water as accompaniment. For those who don't know, this actually helps in better digestion of your food.

I would particularly like to highlight that the rasam and sambar was too good. Definitely
recommended if you are a vegetarian and looking for true blue Kerala style food in Kochi.
Black_Beard
I heard good things about this place and unfortunately we were terribly disappointed going there. Unprofessional and rude staff with heavily overpriced tasteless food. We were 4 and the total bill amount was 1200 that too on a vegetarian restaurant with limited menu. 2 laddus will cost you nearly 50 Rs, common man are you serious???
I felt like the place is a total rip off. Moreover cleanliness is pathetic and an unpleasant odor was coming out of the washroom with toilets. At-least try to keep this place clean and I strongly suggest an immediate renovation there.
Nishita Kanodia
Didn't expect the north Indian to be any good and it wasn't, but surprisingly the south Indian was also passable. Very disappointed. The other reviewers might have come on better days I guess.

I was wanting to share my feedback about Subhiksha on Zomato for quite some time but Ernakulam was not listed. Now that is, there goes...The food here is unbeatable. I had some good feedback about this place from my relatives even before visiting Kerela. The entire range of food we tried from dosa to idli and wada was brilliant (not to forget the backdrop of a rainy day in Ernakulam). To gulp it down we had I believe what is called the Pathimugam. Amazing.

I will come back here for sure whenever Kerela beckons. Final take on the experience is as follows:

Food: 4/5

Price: 4/5

Service: 3.5/5

Ambience: 4/5

*****************

Overall: 4/5
Quite A Plateful
Ask people for Subhiksha and no one's going to have an answer. Ask for bharat tourist home or BTH and everyone will show you where it is.

The restaurant is the most busy at lunch, with its completely vegetarian fare. The favourite however is Kempu, the coffee shop. It is open till 2 am and that matters when you finish a second show and are craving a masala dosa at 12 am.

That said, the coffee shop is a super busy one, and you may have to wait for a table. And wait you will surely have to because their benches and chairs are screwed in place. So no loose chairs to be carried around. An open kitchen keeps your doubts of cleanliness at bay and self service is the norm.

Must-have here is a butter masala dosa followed by a coffee. The dosa is a pricey affair at 80rs (other metros have it cheaper) and the taste, according to loyals in the family, has dwindled over the years. Another favourite is puttu and kattan kaapi at 1 am, with a pappadam. And the restaurant is a calm place at that time of the night.

It's a simple no-frills place with touches of greenery and earthy tones in terracotta art work. They have a garden space too, if you can brave the mosquitoes.

Pretty neat place, good ambience. Tried the Kerala style Sadhya. Maybe it wasn't a season to try it because the curries was pretty less. Despite of that fact, I enjoyed the meal. Pretty nice. Also tried butter naan and paneer butter masala which was so good.

Subhiksha is actually better known by name of the hotel it is in - Bharat Tourist Home or BTH as it is locally known and referred to. Very few locals are likely to know name of the restaurant! This used to be a simple restaurant with a small section that was air conditioned. The not air conditioned part had typical laminate topped tables and wooden chairs with waiters in uniform serving quickly and politely. In vegetarian restaurants in the city, this is probably the best without much competition. They are now fully air conditioned with a recessed area that allows for large groups and where they serve the buffet breakfast at mornings for their hotel's guests. I like their banana leaf lunch which is a very authentic Kerala meal served with boiled rice. This used to be their most popular menu item many years ago and continues to be so even today. It has all the dishes of a typical Kerala meal and is very filling and nourishing. They also have a special meal now but I recommend the banana leaf meal. Their north Indian fare is a disappointment and best stayed away from. Their local menu is their forte and one gets a taste of it at the breakfast buffet. There is generous serving of fresh fruit, particularly locally grown pineapple and also steamed banana which is a accompaniment at breakfast in the state of Kerala. They serve the idiappam (noodle like) and the plain appam, both with vegetable stew and those are also their popular dishes. Prices are higher than at smaller restaurants which serve similar fare, but BTH has been around for 50 years and is going strong even today for its good vegetarian food. They also have a sweet counter at the hotel lobby and from which they serve patrons orders.

This is a very famous south Indian restaurant near Marine drive . Its another authentic pure vegetarian Kerala restaurant. Its little expensive then aryaas but then you get more options here. Best of all you are served food on banana leaves that makes this restaurant a must to try specially for tourists from outside Kerala. This restaurant is always full and suggests how popular it is equally amongst locals and tourists. They have 2 options one is meals and second is buffet. Buffet is little expensive than meals. I went for meals not for monetary part but the locals suggested me for that and I didn't regret. It was heavenly experience to gorge on amazing local cuisines and to top it all the payasam cooked in gur. Please do go here and enjoy the meals with your family or friends..
