Review Mathai Makkal - Kochi (Cochin)

Anna S Lal
Liked the veg wrap and churros but the churros is over hyped since I didn't feel anything that special about it. If you have never had one, you could try it for a change and the only problem I found at this place is that the people at the counter doesn't understand what we tell them. I have ordered gulab jamun tea but they gave cinnamon tea which is something which I don't like. Otherwise the place is worth checking out. And one other thing in Zomato, churros is rated at 170 but actually it is 90.

Awesome Experience Tried their Beef wrap in homemade roomali roti with jalapeño, gherkins, lettuce, raw-fried banana and kanthari mulaku - garlic oil. Very filling and great value for money. Also tried gulab Chai, Spanish beauty- Churros and Berry lemonade. Awesome. A must visit place in kochi!

Mathai makkal is a small eatery at Panampily Nagar which has a variety of really good food. I happened to visit the place a few weeks back and I would definitely suggest this place to anyone looking for a special evening snack. We had a small stop here and had french fries and Churros. French fries were really good and Churros is a must try, kind of a star item here. Will upload it's pic along with the review. Anyway, the place is a definite stop if you happen to be looking for a evening meetup around this area.

Small place but large serving and warm hearted service. Spicy and filling wraps with a nice beetroot mixed batter , beef veg and chicken available. They serve fresh lemonades, raspberry was really good. They also serve churros (better than any you can get in Kochi) flavored tea and coffee. A must try place for wraps

The chicken wraps from this place is epic 🎀 Need to get more drinks though, eventually they will 🎊✨

Nicee food! The churros were very good, a lil pricey though for just 5 pieces...! There could be a better sitting place...!

Mathai Makkal located at Panampally Nagar opens only after 3:30pm. Their chicken/beef/veg wrap, all at a price of Rs150, is worth trying.

Tasted all the wraps. Liked the chicken n veg wraps very much.

A weird interior work, not complaining. Good is food too ;)

Really nice and variety food! Food is really tasty and the ambience is modern-cool! All Mathais must be very proud of their sons! All the best and thank u!

Had really yummy wraps after a long time. 😊 Their beef wrap is really good, but whats more yummier is the chicken wrap (the smell of the marinated chicken is to die for!! 😍). The wraps had just the right amount of spice and cheese apart form all the other goodies. The crunchy freshness of the veggies used definitely deserves a thumbs up! 👍 The Cinnamon Coffee with a dollop of butter and the Gulab Chai were divine amidst the rain.☕☔ Their chillers for which actual blueberries and raspberries are used are oh so refreshing. But today being a rainy day, I preferred the Chai and Coffee. And for dessert - Churros with chocolate sauce! DELISH!! Looking forward to going back and trying the veggie wrap and of course more churros. Good job team Mathai Makkal!!👏👍😃

Experiments are always fun. This place is a good example of how sweet success tastes, when experimentation goes right. I love wraps, all kinds of it. Have tried everything from GreatWraps to Mediterranean stuff, but this place is unique. It's kind of a mix between Mexican and South Indian, that touches your every taste bud. I tried the Chicken wrap and boy, it was divine. The churros were nothing like I've had in the past. I mean, what can you expect in a churro, it is only so much a thing, I thought. No, this one here is different. Yummmy with the chocolate dip! They don't have a lot of options but whatever they got is surprisingly well crafted. Kudos to the team for perfecting it! Their backstory too is very inspiring, going through hurdles to make this happen, just out of passion for food. Here's wishing you guys all the best!

Got to say!! Their rolls gives us a fresh taste probably cause of the veggies they use and I guess it's a low fat roll!!

It was experimental, but tastes good and wrap was nice .. ambience too lovely

Pros: Oh my my my!!!! Their wrap is just divine!!! I have tried several wraps available everywhere and nothing has matched the quality and quantity delivered by this gang!! Super yummy.. And unbeatable here for sure. Their price is also wonderful.. Do not change that because people will be happy to come and repurchase many a time from you all. Con: It is few meters away from my house.. So say bye bye to my dieting!!!! :D :D :D :D :D

Got to be there once on a Saturday night. Tried their Beef wrap, it was too good. Super cheesy and tender meat in there. Good to go for one person.

quantity could've been a little more

The ambience is excellent and the name is really catchy, but food was a big disappointment. Wraps don't mean you can add sauce of your choice, all three wraps were pure Let down.

Probably one of the most overrated restaurants in kochi. I have no idea why there was so much hype about it. The menu hardly has 6 starters, 2 wraps option and the rest are desserts.
The wraps were weird. Couldn't figure out what it contained.
The ambience too though tried to look a bit unique, looks very odd.

A small cozy place, but finding seats during rush hours would be a task.

Ordered Chicken wrap and Spanish churros, well the wrap was good and the quantity was enough (but i was not filled though). Churros was delicious, cheap and i would recommend to people who loves dessert.

Overall, a good place for small eats.

Value for money 4/5.

This eatery is as small it sounds! But trust me, the wraps are amazing, be it vegetarian or non vegetarian. The only difficulty you have to deal with is finding a comfortable spot to sit and eat. I'd suggest the management to extend it a bit more, maybe ? If you're here for the first time, try their wraps and the gulaabi tea.

Not a recent reporting – I guess they are renovating/moving next door. Anyways, had their beef and veg wraps and both were really phenomenal. To be honest I was infact surprised with their veg wraps, which had a decent filling of cheese balls mixed with potatoes and jalapenos, some generous portions of mayonnaise and some other sauces . This, I would say is definitely the best roll place in Kochi and mind you, though it might appear a bit pricey, it is definitely worth it for the quality and the quantity. Also not to be missed is the crazy gulab tea. Another item I am dying to try out is their churros, which was being ordered by everyone, but I didn’t have that much of an appetite that day to go all out on the churros.

a great place.. i really loved the location.. and the first bite of their roll was heaven.. later i lost interest.. the place is lovely.. and it gives an exterior ambience..👨‍👩‍👧‍👧
#happinessisbeingwithfamily
heard that their churros are great.. hoping to come for the same.😍🌯

Ordered beef and veg wrap...
Veg is more yummy than beef.
Cheese ball, french fries and the sauces.... combination make superbb...😋
Nice ambiance bt small spacing

overall GOOD
Will visit again

These churros were perfectly crispy on the outside, soft and kind of melt in your melt on the inside, along with the heavenly nutella, I could eat this for days..

Its located in Panampilly nagar, not much to say about ambience, as its open air type.
We had passion fruit juice and beef wrap. Beef wrap was not that good, but passion fruit was good enough.

So Iam a hardcore non vegetarian lover. So I have heard the veg roll here is really good and since I happen to be on lent as well, I thought of giving a try. After all how different can a veg roll taste anyway.
But to my shock it was REALLY good!!
Everyone should definitely try their veg roll, it's huge with fries as stuffing and many other things and also their passion fruit juice, it's really good.

A street food restaurant types... Their beef wrap is one of the best, quality wise and quality wise. Currently they do not have much seating and all... One of the Mathai chettans son told that they have taken the nearby space to come up with more seating and facilitates. If you want to quickly have a wrap and you do not want to wait long, choose Mathai makkals....
Aarya
Well this a small place ,excellent for those who want to just sit around the corner and eat along.(go at night for the fairy tale lighting they have)
And the food, the veg wrap with fries(even though I’m not a fan of fries,i kinda like it here) and pickled veggies and sauces had great flavours and was great.
The corn dog was not so much to rant about(okayish). The Gulab chai was just a few drops of rose water and black tea,no flavour not sweet too(it smelled great tho)THEN COMES THE CHURROS AND THE UHMAZING CHOCOLATE SAUCE THEY SERVE,I must say, that simple yet delicious snack is indeed their highlight.(going to hit that place again just for those churros❤️)

A great place to head to when a craving for good wraps hit you. Had veg and non veg wraps and it was so good. Beef wrap highly recommended..

The food scene in Kochi has been growing quite tremendously in recent times and one place that has been mentioned time and again on various food pages on social media and on zomato as well over the past couple of months is Mathai Makkal and this had me longing to try the food here.
I had visited Mathai Makkal a week or two prior to Christmas and I read a couple of reviews in order that I choose wisely what I buy. Something that really caught my attention was that a lot of reviewers recommended trying the veg wrap over the beef and chicken wrap. I had all three wraps and I too am of the same opinion. I usually don't care for anything veg but the veg wrap here is indeed better than their beef and chicken wraps, not that the latter two are bad. The beef wrap is good but I found the chicken wrap dry which was a let down. The veg wrap had a pizza-ish sort of taste that I really liked.
I also had their churros and gulab tea. The gulab tea costs rs 15 so it's pretty cheap. The churros were pretty good and I believe that Mathai Makkal is one of the very few places in Kochi that serve churros.
I also had their corndogs and eggnog which I believe are recent additions but both of them were sort of a let down. The eggnog tasted pretty bland, maybe due to the fact that it is non-alcoholic as alcohol can't be served over here and I found the sausage in the corndog quite squishy, a tad undercooked.

They do have piri piri fries and several drinks and other food items to choose from but I've only had the above and from my experience I'd recommend one to stick to the wraps, preferably veg or beef and I'd recommend the churros as well. Pricing is also pretty reasonable. Joe Eugene Steve Mathews

This place was in my food bucket list since their commencement. So I visited Mathai makkal two days back with my cousin. As planned already we ordered for beef wrap and veg wrap along with eggnog and churros. Eggnog and churros were the heroes... Loved them to bits... Coming to wrap it tasted good and different.i liked Veg wrap a bit more than the other...having said that I've had other wraps which were a tad more better than this. The place is so small hence seating was not comfy. But for a quick bite worth a shot... I'll go back for churros definitely.

Really good setting by the makkal I should say. The churros were fantastic!!
Heard the wrap was the highlight but was disappointed as it didn't live up to expectations.
The gulab chai and the other drinks were good. Have great expectations from here. All the best.

We visited MM for dinner today travelling quite a distance as my wife had heard great reviews thru food groups and friends. Overall 3.5/5 is our rating. Specifics: Our order was 1 Chicken Wrap, 1 Veg Wrap, a portion of fries and a strawberry cooler. Food Quality: 3.5/5, Packaging: 3/5, Service: 4/5, Quantity/portion size: 2/5, Ambience (we did a takeaway of sorts): 3/5, Location/Visibility: 3/5, Taste: 3.5/5, Hygiene:4/5. Value: 2.5/5. The owners were around i shared my feedback. Good set of folks running the place, great staff open cooking but perceived value to us was LOW. And here my comparison was with very similar sized eateries in and around Cochin with similar background of owners and location and to add quantity of goods vs.cost attached direct valuation. But I guess everyone has their opinion of cost, quality and quantity. So this was 'ours' and am sure they would make an effort to ensure customers have a different innovative experience within their limitations.

Would I recommend MM: Yes, but with clear views as to what they shud expect.
Would I visit again: Yes, here again only if I am in the neighbourhood and I happened to die for a Wrap woth very very very less patience to drive any longer. Not otherwise!

Mathai Makkal is one place we’ve been hearing people rave about since Day 1. Finally dropped by last weekend when we were passing through Panampilly Nagar. A quaint little place, with really simple decor of fairy lights, tucked in on the street bang opposite to Ali Baba & 41 Dishes. They have a small menu consisting of Wraps, Nuggets, Fries, Churros and Teas. We opted for the 3 varieties of wraps they offer - Veg, Chicken & Beef. Even though I’d seen reviews that the Veg Wrap was ridiculously good, I wondered as to how good a veg wrap could even be? But let’s just say, the Veg Wrap was the winner of the three that night! It was packed with flavour and I’d definitely go back just to indulge in that. As for the other two wraps, both chicken and beef were just about okay, nothing spectacular. I’ve had other wraps which have fries in them so that alone doesn’t appeal to me as a wow factor but both wraps were extremely filling. Will definitely go back to try out their Churros and Tea!

Heard alot about this place and finally got to visit this one evening. It's a small place at the turn of the cross roads in the Panampilly Nagar. The initial looks may not impress u but all that's compensated for by their delicious wraps. There were the 2 of us, and we ordered 2 veg wraps, 1 chicken and beef wrap each. From the first bite itself the veg wrap felt so rich and yummy. The jalapenos, potato cheese balls along with lettuce, mayo and mustard sauce felt like a festival of flavours in the mouth. The chicken wrap was good as well but not as good as the veg wrap. The beef wrap wasn't much to my liking. All of their wraps are priced at Rs150 each. Dont be apprehensive about paying the same amount for the veg wraps as the non veg ones, the veg wrap is the best one here. One wrap may just fill u if u have a small appetite. I needed 2 to feel full.
They don't have table-chair type seating available, there are only a few stools available.
Would surely recommend this place for their Veg and Chicken wraps.
Best Churros in town. Trust me. It's a must to have if you're coming to panampilly nagar. They serves it fresh and hot all the time. I'm definitely going there soon. And don't forget to try their Gulab chai. Loved the outdoor ambience.

What a beautiful discovery. After a long struggle, I finally managed to find this little place. With fairy lights around and a couple of seats, this is just the perfect place for a quick bite. Tried the veg wrap and the gulabi tea. The wrap was okay-ish. But the tea was fab. Shall be back for their chicken options. Also the owner was very sweet. Cheers to you guys. Good job.

Definitely deserves a good rating...
The wraps are totally filling and doesn't leave you unsatisfied...
The drinks are also okay, well I suggest they improve the quantity of the drink...
But the best and exceptional part was the churros, which is the best I have tasted anywhere in Kerala so far... All together its a good experience... and also like to see more varieties in wraps in the future...

A small place at Panampilly Nagar.

Ordered the beef roll and the veg roll.
Both the roll tasted good. A bit oily for my taste. They don't have a healthier option.

Overall - Decent

Found this small teeny tiny yet exquisite place in Panamapilly Nagar! There were so many post and reveiws about this place, so had to find out what the fuss was all about! Ordered a chicken wrap and some fries which was delicious! Its wonderful how they managed to create such a chilled and comfortable environment in such a small area! Great for a light evening snack! Kudos to the owner who was a friendly guy for coming out with such an innovative place! Hope they come out with more options soon! A must visit place!

Located in one of the posh streets of Kochi, this place does charm you at first sight! Had a chicken wrap and some fries!! The chicken wrap tasted different from what you normally find around and it was quite tasty and filling too! Had a small chit chat with the owner, one of Mathai's sons, who recommended the veg wrap! Will definitely visit this place again to try that one!! Blesson

I absolutely love this place without any doubt.. Their wrap is simply divine. It's so filling and stuffed with flavour and deliciousness. I am a big lover of the show Man vs Food by Adam Richman and always wanted to see wraps made here in Kerala that is richly packed and this team practically nailed it. Lots of places their Shawarma and wraps are literally covered with cabbage and mayo.. But here it's juicy meat, chips, sauces and yumminess!! From their new additions in the menu, would totally recommend that you try their Churros and Cinnamon Coffee.. Absolutely divine!
Manuel Tony
A quaint lil place but nice to spend evenings thanks to the whole set up with the fairy lights. Food could have honestly been a little better. We had the chicken and beef roll. Just felt something was missing. The churros here are a must try and it's definitely something you don't see much around. The corn dogs were pretty good, but maybe the quantity might be a lil too much for that price. The Christmas special eggnogs were definitely a good finish.
Jahanzweb Nazr
Try out their veg roll instead of non veg. It is stuffed with jalapenos , mozarella cheese , banana etc..... something entirely new.

Also tried churros which is a sweet dessert dipped in nutella and a cup of gulab tea ended it well. Will try out other items next time.

Visited this place initially seeing a fairylight lit corner in panampilly at night. Tried chicken roll and it felt like homemade rolls with a taste similar to stew. To be honest, dint enjoy it much. But I have been hearing lots of good things about this place and its famous churros... so hope to have a better experience on my next visit.

Update - yeap, I did go back to try the churros, and yes i liked it... but it got too sweet for me after one. The corn dogs were not bad.. but I wish the outer covering was more crispy.
Sachin
The fillings were not to the liking of my taste buds ! I found it difficult to finish the beef wrap I ordered ! Had to go to the nearest shop to gulp down a Maaza to take of the taste from my tongue ! Disappointed after visiting with much expectations seen from other reviews !

I have always been a huge fan of churros..So when I heard of this place that served churros here in Cochin, I just had to try it! And guess what! Mathai makkal didn't disappoint!

Mathai makkal is located in panampilly nagar and offers three types of wraps(chicken, beef and veg), churros and a few beverages. We tried the chicken wrap and the beef wrap first. The chicken wrap was amazing! They add french fries in their wraps which makes a big difference from the normal wraps u get elsewhere. The beef wrap was decent. Then came the winner of the lot..the churros! It was really good! Do try it if u visit this place! We also tried the cinnamon coffee which was okay-ish as it had a very strong flavour of cinnamon and less of coffee.

But overall, I loved the food, the location and the service!
Mia Renny
With only 10 things on the menu, Mathai makkal def takes their food seriously. Yummy chicken roll and the churros ❤️❤️ good sized portions of fast food. Cinnamon coffee was a first and nice experience. Will definitely go again for quick hunger pangs.

These guys have managed to give life to our rather simple rolls. The chicken roll and veg. rolls here are absolute joy to indulge in. The cheesy twist in these mesmerising super food is to kill for.

The Gulab tea they serve is worth a mention too. Space is the only setback as of now, but I'm sure that'll be fixed sooner than later. Especially with the massive expansion mathai makkal has in mind !!

Verdict: a delightful new joint, that's bound to get you excited.
Joseph
Mathai makkal can be described as a lil wrap joint that feels like a food truck.
Coming straight to the food, we tried all their wraps, chicken, beef and veg. And you'll be surprised to learn that the veg wrap is their bestseller.
The beef and chicken wraps are good, but the veg wrap is something new. Don't mistake it for a paneer, potato or cauliflower wrap. The veg wrap is actually cheese balls, jalapenos, French fries(I think) etc rolled into tortillas. Worth trying.

This joint is run out of passion to serve something interesting. Moderately priced, good service. Deserves your attention.

Tasty wraps .👌 Had tried the beef one. Totally worth the money. The only small problem being the insects near the sitting area during night time. Had notified them about that and hope they soon find a solution. Will visit again for the wraps.
This is a very small place. Hence, please look carefully when passing through as you might miss this shop. Its opposite of Ali Baba and Doner Kebab. Coming to the food, they currently have only 3 items.
Veg, Chicken and Beef wrap. They are planning on adding more dishes soon. Current only limited seating. I had their chicken wrap and it's was filled with lot of add ons. I'd say it has a lot of flavours.
