Review Girish Chandra Dey & Nakur Chandra Nandy - Kolkata (Calcutta)

Sayantan Halder
Absolute legend in North Kolkata offering sweetmeats since 1844 specialising in "sandesh" only. Bit overpriced, a very retro look with iron grills separating the patrons from truly entering and having any kind of interaction. Customer service needs to be improved compared to century old legendary Bengali sweet shops in Kolkata. They have traditional as well fusion sweets. I am more of a traditional misti person than its fusion counterparts . They have butterscotch, strawberry, blueberry, mango, chocolate, kiwi, green apple, orange to name a few modern fusions. From traditional sweets one can have Malai Roll, Sorer Singara, Mohini, Jolbhora. In winter they have some special sweets which I love like Gurer Sandesh, Gurer Makha Sandesh, Gurer Kachagolla, Janai style Gurer Monohora. Nolen Gur in different size containers are also sold.
Bappi
One of the oldest and best sweet selling shops in Kolkata. Tast are heavenly awesome.Nothing to recommend as many are madly in love with it and I am also part of them ♥

The sweets are awesome. Flavor sandesh are next level like strawberry, mango, butter scotch, chocolate vanilla etc. Packaging is also good. Value for money.

Kolkata is full of gems when sweets are concerned and this one is one of them, situated around 15 min walk from Girish Park metro its worth the walk. The shop is around 180 year old and specializes in Sondesh. Whenever I visit such type of legendary places just request them to serve few of their best one, here request best 4 and after eating it was difficult to decide. Its a must visit place, every sweet tooth visiting Kolkata should have in the bucket list.
subham dhar
One of the most oldest and the best sweet shop selling " only sandesh" sweets. The place gives the best quality of sweets, KOLKATA is known for. Now the price is a bit pricy as compared to local sweet shops but the quality is something you would not even find in 5 star restaurants around the city. The legacy is kept well.

Started in 1844 by Girish Chandra Dey, this age old sweet shop offers the best Sandesh in the city. From Nolen Gur Sandesh to Chocolate sandesh, they’ve got it all. Strawberry, Kiwi, Blueberry, Butterscotch.. so many options to choose from! I honestly love the fact that they’re very consistent with their quality and keep coming up with new flavours. You’ve got to try their winter specials like kanchagolla, monohara, gurer jalbhara and dark chocolate! Trust me, you won’t get such amazing flavours anywhere in the world! Must try- Kara paak, Jolbhora, Chandrapuli, Chocolate Sandesh, Kachagolla, Dark Chocolate Sandesh, Monohara, Amrito, Sachin, Gur makha Sandesh, Strawberry Sandesh, Kiwi Sandesh, Butterscotch Sandesh and Gurer Malai Roll. •Timings- 7am to 10.30pm (best to go before 6pm as everything gets sold out quickly)

It is one of the heritage sweet shops of Kolkata as well as whole West Bengal. Girish and Nakur are known for their amazing varieties of Sandesh. Although, it is a bit expensive than the local sweet shops but worth a shot considering their delectable varieties.

Best place for Sandesh (sweets) in entire world. They have many varieties and each sweets tastes different. You would never regret if you are a Sandesh Lover. I tried 10 types of sandesh and still wanted more but my stomach didn't allow me. Will definitely complete the remaining in next time and it will be in Winter so that I can try Sandesh made from Nolen Gur. ☺️👍 A must visit for sweet lovers and food lovers ❤️

YUMMY... All the sweets that we had were just AWESOME... their speciality is Sandesh varieties... Makha Sandesh is also available here at Rs. 750/kg (it is not showcased, you have to ask for it and they will bring it from inside)... Rest Aabar khabo, Narkel Sandesh, Jolbhora, Chandrapuli, Monohara all were good... And above all... going to this iconic place and having sweets was an amazing experience... and the quality they have maintained after all these years from 1868 is praiseworthy... A must visit in Cental Kolkata...

This is a very old condiment / sweet shop of Kolkata. The legacy goes beyond 170 years. They are specialist of making dry sweets. Highly recommended sweets to get from here - Gud Monohora, any variation of Jolbhora Sandesh, Any variation of normal Sandesh and Malai Singara. Malai Singara can be somewhat rich for some people.
Subhankar Neogi
Heaven for sweet lovers. You may not like the outer appearance of the shop . Old place, sarounde with grills. You will only get sondesh no suger syrup sweets. Tests are heavenly awesome. Must try jolbhora. Sweets are kind of mouth melting and balanced sweetness.
Abhinav Mishra
Its a small sweet shop, located near Christ Church, tucked away in a side alley while established in the 1844 (178 years old) and has achieved a legendary status and practically has become a part of city’s heritage. They have sheer variety of different Sandesh which is their specialty. Its a must visit for all true foodies with a sweet tooth.
Amisha Kumar
Heritage establishment offering delectable variety of sandesh- I tried kora paak sandesh (melt-in-mouth experience) and Sachin Sandesh (yes, it's dedicated to Sachin Tendulkar). Prices are higher when compared to other sweet shops. However, it feels justified as Girish-Nakur has emerged as a brand offering fine authentic Bengali sweets since 1844.
Subhasish Das
This one of the oldest sweet shops in Kolkata, really lives up to its legacy. Still making the best of sweets .
Debkanta Mondal
This shop is the prime example where legacy speaks. With no fancy dining, no dim lights or great infrastructure Girish Chandra Dey and Nakul Chandra Nandy stood out from the crowd. Sweets ranges between 20-50 rupees are definitely not cheap by any means but an individual will pay only for it's heritage. Timeless 'Sandesh' is what you should try all the time whenever you visit this place. Staffs cater our order quite fast and we don't have any problem whatsoever. Though, parking is available there when we visited, on busy days parking might be a problem only because of its situation just beside Ramdulal Sarkar Street. So, better to take your two wheeler. Although, you will visit this place for its sweets and not for the chaotic Calcutta streets and when you put a chunk of 'Sandesh' in your mouth you will ultimately forget those bedlams.

🔸 🔸 Legendary Sweet Shop in North Kolkata 🔸 🔸 <br/><br/>Girish Chandra Dey & Nakur Chandra Nandy is one of the legendary sweet shops in the City of Joy located in the heart of North Kolkata near Hedua. It is one of the pioneer sweet shops that pops up in our minds when we think about good sweet shops in Kolkata. Personally, I am love to have typical Bengali Sandesh and this place is pure bliss as it is a heaven of sweet paradise. Whenever I think of having typical Bengali Sandesh then this place strikes my mind first. The different types of Sandesh from Nakur always impress me and make me crave for more. 😋 This place is the perfect synonym of traditional culture of Bengal & Bengalis sweets. From childhood I am a big fan of sweets of this legendary shop. It has been years and this place have never disappointed me. They have come up with new varieties year after year. Location- 56, Ramdulal Sarkar Street, Hedua Park, Hatibagan, Kolkata.<br/><br/>Menu:-<br/>• Black-Current Sandesh<br/>• Gurer Sandesh<br/>• Samosa <br/>• Butterscotch Sandesh<br/><br/>This is a Very Old Shop. This shop provides the Best Sweets of the Kolkata, and Everyone knows that Kolkata is known for sweets.<br/>This shop provides only takeaways.<br/>Its Price might seem as Over-Priced, That's true. It might not be a Good Option to take your regular sweets from here, But as a Bengali, all I can say is that if you are in Kolkata, Please DEFINATELY Try this Sweet. I am SURE that you won't regret.<br/>Happy Fooding!

Awesome most authentic bengali sondesh
Rajatava
As expected, their sweets are amazing and I really like how there are so many varieties of sweets to choose from, which never makes a visit to this place boring, ever, thanks to so much variety and so many types of sweets!<br/><br/>However, the only problem I have with it is that there is some strange and weird smell coming out of it (probably the smell of the sweets but not a nice smell) and I hope they can fix that soon enough.
Jayant Dugar
Well the options are huge the flavors are awesome and there is queue every-time.I tried Strawberry,Butterscotch,Sapta, mango among others. They are mostly known for Butterscotch Sandesh.I found strawberry awesome.Price are high for the quantity served

Food Captured: Butterscotch Malai Chop.<br/>Price: 25 Rs<br/><br/>Who would've thought an indian sweet dish could be so inviting and delicious with the flavour of butterscotch!<br/>The whole piece had a strong flavour of butterscotch, the exterior was made of kheer, deep fried in ghee. The interior butterscotch filling converged with our taste buds to give the most delighting taste. As the name suggests, the whole dish was made with butterscotch, kheer and malai..<br/>Stars : 4/5 ⭐.

This is one of the highest rated places in Kolkata with probably most number of votes. It's not a fancy shop with a nice showroom and great services. All it has is a small shop with a kitchen at the back and a range of the world famous Sandesh of Bengal.<br/><br/>I have always been a fan of old shops which have still kept the authentic taste they were famous for , this shop does justice to it's famous name , the sweet it serves and maintaing the famous tagline for Kolkata "The sweetest part of India."<br/><br/>I went during the Pujo season so the rush was expected. The shop was easily spotted with crowd buzzing all around it. We asked the shopkeeper about his best product and he smiled and replied try anything you won't be disappointed.<br/><br/>I tried almost all varieties of Sandesh , the chocolate one , mango, butterscotch, kiwi , pineapple, the simple Sandesh and variety of different flavours.<br/>And the flavours were actually complimenting the sweet.<br/><br/>These shops are pride of Bengal, and does require a visit.

This outlet is located near Hedua Park. Take the lane besides Bethun School, it will be on the left side.<br/><br/>**Decoration- The main attraction of the whole decoration is the display area of different sweets.<br/><br/>**Food- As a Bengali ,sweet is my most  favourite part among the whole meal.So when I reached here I had ordered different types of sweets.Those were-<br/>•Malai Singara<br/>•Amrapali<br/>•Dark Chocolate<br/>•Sada Malai Roll<br/>•Badami<br/>Each Rs.25.<br/><br/>**Service- Service was quick.<br/><br/>**Girish Chandra Dey & Nakur Chandra Nandy is the star of sweet industry of bengal.

Famous Sweet shop to which everyone would agree.<br/>Each and every sweet has its own uniqueness, flavour and taste.<br/>Amazing experience and would love to visit it soon.

You don't need to review a place which is flocked by culinary greats such as Vikas Khanna and Bollywood superstar Shahrukh Khan. This place is always on my list whenever I visit Kolkata and always make it a point to pack some sandesh for journey back home.<br/><br/>We had the following -<br/><br/>Jal Bhara sandesh - it is a sandesh which has a sweet syrup inside. The moment you put it in the mouth it disappears as if you just had a marshmallow. It is so soft and tender.<br/><br/>Malia roll - it is a sweet roll with malai and masala in it. Unique delicacy and very rarely found in other places.<br/><br/>Chocolate sandesh - I just love the Innovation these guys have done with the sandesh. One such is the chocolate sandesh. Perfectly made and has the right chocolate taste to suit our taste buds.<br/><br/>Strawberry sandesh - as the name suggests, it's a strawberry flavored sandesh and I am a big fan of strawberry so loved the texture and taste.<br/><br/>Kesar sandesh - not sure if it's the name of the sandesh as they don't have menu but the taste was terrific and it had kesar on top of it.<br/><br/>Mango sandesh - this has to be my favorite one as the sandesh taste was spot on. They don't use pulp in it and it was evident from the first bite itself. Loved it completely.<br/><br/>Overall rating -<br/>Ambience - 4/5<br/>Food quality - 5/5<br/>Service - 5/5<br/>Value for money - 5/5
Pamela Nandi (Foodaholic)
Have never been to this place, but one of my dear friend gifted a box of assorted sandesh. Must say its a box full of love - chocolate, bluberry, talsash, raw mango, mango sandesh is so fresh and the sweetness and flavours are perfectly balanced.

Ardent lover of sandesh over rosh er mishti... Abd this shop is famous for their sandesh. The one and only outlet in kolkata. They have not opened any other outlet to maintain the quality of the sweets. Tried their malai roll, which is made of cheese in small roll style, topped with malai. Low sweet, tasted great. Then had, chocolate sandesh, strawberry sandesh, which have their unique tastes. The staffs were nice, suggested me sandesh 's to try out.

Probably the only place that has been on my list for years and when I was in Kolkata this time, I just couldnt resist. This place is almost legendary and is located close to Girish Park. The shop is quite old and has a kitchen inside. The front is covered with iron grills. The only down side is their customer service on the front which could be better as they get irritated very fast. <br/><br/>They have a large variety of sondesh and sweet meats. I tried their Malai Roll which has a thick layer of milk fat or malai along with a soft cheese inside. The Mango Sondesh was my favorite as it had a subtle flavor of mango. The Kacha gola is one of the purest forms of sondesh with right sweetness. The best seller is their Jaal Bhora which is filled with sweet syrup and is absolutely amazing. The prices of the sweets are on the higher side compared to other places. <br/><br/>The Verdict:<br/>Taste - 8/10<br/>Service - 7/10<br/>Value for Money - 7/10<br/><br/>Great sondesh collection! I did get a packful of sondesh back home!

What to say about this place i have eaten sandesh from this place many times but today i went to the shop for the first time looking at crowd i really felt like i m at some legendary shop. To me this iconic sweet shop does not require any review....for me its nostalgia and in today's world they have retained the old days sweet shop facade and the quality of sweets have remained the same... I used to visit nakur sweet shops from kasba with friends to enjoy their sweets....

I did my graduation from Bethune college so I was a frequent visitor here. So one of the sweets I am bowled over is chocolate singara, so try this. Apart from this their Malai sandesh and other flavoured sweets are must try.

<br/>I was not a big fan of misti even after being a Bangali, as I've never tasted sweets from here.<br/>The speciality must be their unique fusion as well as the perfect balance of sweet.<br/>Each misti has their own different taste.<br/><br/>In frame:<br/>1. As always excellent. A tradition being carried through generations with quality and improved variety.<br/>This is just amazing. Would love see more variety on dark chocolate based items.

Been having sweets from this place since long. I plan to stop by always when i am passing through hatibagan / vivekananda road. They do serve some awesome sweets however there are some sweets which are just additions without flavours which does not suit there image. But still love their selective sweets. I feel there is no comparison to some of their authentic sweets.
Saurav Mukherjee
The quintessential bangalir mishtir dokan. The highest rated sweet shop in the city. I definitely had to give this one a try!<br/><br/>Even before going there I was amazed with the facts I was hearing about the place. This place has become so famous that to not compromise on it's product it maintains it's own dairy and it is now 175 years old. Run by the same family of the founders it is now in it's third and fourth generations. Also, they cater to a huge audience outside India. Even then, they have blatantly refused to open a second branch anywhere else in Kolkata.<br/><br/>Located at the heart of North Calcutta, near Bethune college, this looks like a normal shop. A passerby will pass this place for 10 years without noticing any speciality in the shop ( of course he has to ignore the crowd ). But the demand of customers around the transparent kiosks holding the little pieces of different varieties of dessert tells a different story. A story that aligns with it's 4.9 rating on zomato.<br/><br/>We tried a variety of stuff. All the items was definitely very fresh, which gave the texture a flaky exterior. The sweetness is not a sudden burst in your mouth sweetness, rather it is something that grows upto a sensation as you take one bite followed by the next.<br/><br/>The only problem I found was although the different items promised different flavours, the base of the products had the same mouth and taste feel - which the different flavours were trying to hide. And the base flavour was not a taste I was very fond of.<br/><br/>This place is definitely more expensive than it's peers, but it is definitely worth a try.<br/><br/>

I have been to this place since my childhood. This is the place of my emotion. This is the place where sweets come from heaven. The purity of chenna makes this place a delight. Don't forget to try chocolate sweets also. If you want to grade this place in terms of quality and taste, this place will top in both of the sectors. The most appreciated thing of this place is that they make sweets infront of the customers. I mean every one can see what they are doing to create this masterpieces. But only their talent is needed to make those sweets this much heavenly. I will recomend every variety of chocolate sandesh and the master of all nalengurer naram paker jalbhara to every one. Dont forget to visit this place once you are visiting kolkata.<br/>*****highly recommended *****

If you live in Kolkata and don't know about this place then its sad. It is one of the oldest and probably one of the best sweet shops in the city. Located near Hedua this shop churns out a plethora of sandesh and other sweets day in day out and there is a constant rush of people waiting outside to get their orders fulfilled.<br/><br/>I have had a lot of sweets from here but in this review I'll right about the ones i had recently.<br/><br/>Butterscotch samosa (4.5/5)<br/>Butterscotch roll (5/5) must try<br/>Chocolate roll (4/5)<br/>Malai roll (5/5)<br/>Nolen Gur sandesh (5/5) must try<br/>Chocolatw sandesh (3.5/5)<br/><br/>In the past i have tried their mango and rose sandesh which were equally amazing.<br/>A must visit place if you are in Kolkata and love sweets 😊😊

Located near Hedua Park, this one is perhaps the best authentic Bengali sweet shop in Calcutta. Starting right from the traditional jhol-bhora talsansh to the delectably innovative chocolate sandeshes, every single thing will make you ask for more. Being a shop that dates back to the British Era, the interiors have an old world charm but are extremely well-maintained and hygienic. Whether you live in Calcutta or not, if you are a sweet meat lover (specially the Bengali ones), then this one is indeed your destination.

Home delivery should be there to adjacent areas.. Big problem to get the sweets from there.. U think about sweets than u should be here to eat.

It is situated just behind my college. Our professors gave us a box full of sweets as a treat on 5th September, and we literally fought to get those sweets as much as possible. If you don't like sweets then taste their sandesh for once . you will definitely fall in love.

This is the real place to buy Sandesh and there’s no looking back after! It’s a 150 year old business for no other reason! Long ride but worth the effort

Short Description : It's one of the famous sweet shops in North Kolkata with a 4.6 rating on Google and 4.9 rating on Zomato.<br/><br/>Location : A few minutes walk from Hedua crossing or Vivekananda road crossing will take you to this place.<br/><br/>Short Description : I have not tried all the sweets yet but I can tell you that you will love the taste of all the sweets. If you have a soft corner for chocolate sandesh then you will have a hard time selecting one as they have a wide range of varieties. Apart from chocolate sandesh they have multiple options including Monohora, Mohini, Lebu, Gurer Kanchagolla, Jolbhora, Malai Roll, Kiwi.<br/><br/>Must try : Chocolate Singara, Mohini, jolbhora.

It's very difficult to stand out as a Sweet Shop in Kolkata with a plethora of them all around. But GCD-NCN has managed to hold it's own for years. They have constantly reinvented themselves and updated their offerings to the changing times, retaining their hallmark of taste & quality.
