Review Nizam's Restaurant - Kolkata (Calcutta)

SANDIPAN MONDAL
Had mutton biryani and chicken tikka butter masala with chicken chap. Biriyani( was delicious, proper quantity and mutton was well cooked👌. Chicken tikka butter masala was great... Rich in flavours (4 pieces) Chicken chap was good but little higher in salty side. Price was justifiable. Ambience good. Service average. Very crowded in peek festive season.

Well, if you thought that Nizam’s is only popular for its kathi rolls, it’s time that you change your perception. Situated in New Market, the restaurant serves lip-smacking Kolkata biryani—one of the best in the city. At any given time of the day, it might be difficult for you to find an empty place here. And on weekends, you might have to wait in a queue. However, the wait is worth it as the biryani is absolutely delicious. Served with boiled potatoes, pieces of chicken/mutton and a boiled egg, the heavenly taste of the biryani is nothing but outstanding. If you want to try something else too then order dishes like mutton pasanda, mutton rezala and chicken chaap along with your choice of bread such as naan or tandoori roti.

Kolkata's one of the best roll place, Nizam's since 1932. Since 1964 Nizam's started kathi roll, the started using bamboo sticks to grill kebabs and thats the point Kathi roll born in Kolkata before that it was simple roll. All different aromatic spices used to marinate the kebabs that gives the flavours to Nizam's Kathi roll. Really good and must for evry roll lovers. Heritage ambience but now modified a lot till it is Nizam. Try biriyani n Phirni awsom full of aroma and flavor. It worth to be there.

hands down one of the best kathi rolls. no frills, meat wrapped in roti with onion, nimbu and green chilly. the best kinda roll. got the standard chicken kathi and mutton kathi. i prefer the chicken but mutton was good too. had to come here to pay my respect to the origins of kathi rolls.

You can check this place out if you are around the new market area for some good Indian food. We tried their Nizam's chicken kathi roll- single which was good, but if you are a person who loves to eat roll with sauces & ketchup then you might not like their roll as they don't use any sort of ketchup & sauce. For Vegetation food you will only find few paneer dishes in their menu and nothing more. They have AC & Non AC Seating options as well, Ambience is also nice.
Rajdeep Deb
The original source of Kathi Roll is now a bustling nonagenarian restaurant located at the ever chaotic New Market area best known for the lip smacking options of rolls.Other dishes including biryani are top draws also.Warm lighting fills the interior and the walls are adorned with framed film posters.Service is decent, but parking is a nightmare here. With its share of limitations this is a prominent place of the rich culinary heritage of Kolkata.

if you are around near Esplanade then you tried of eating Chinese food , and wants to a beautiful mesmerizing ambience then you must try Nizam. We try famous nizam kathi roll and Murgha Biriyani, kathi roll taste good but come to biriyani portion is less according price and too much oli but but taste was too good.

Authentic, Delicious and Heritage. I have heard people claim that it is now no more having the standards of the past but I would say it is still better than many other places. If you are longing to taste Kolkata Biriyani then this can be the place with a reasonable price.
Arijit Sett
I have been here both in the nom AC segment and the AC segment. They serve you the best roll in Kolkata. At least the've been serving roll over many decades now. Must try roll here. Biriyani is good /decent but I have had better. But rolls would make you visit again. Deserts, firni is good but I would recommend the Begum pasand Malai. If you are reading this and have not visiting this place YET. I recommend you to visit NOW. Go relish the food they serve. Just at the ground floor of Hogg building corporation office, near Chaplin square, the lane opp to Elite movie hall.

Nizam's Restaurant, credited as the birthplace of the iconic Kathi Roll, is a culinary legend in the world of Indian cuisine. Specializing in Mughlai fare, this eatery offers a taste of history and tradition on every plate. The Kathi Roll, an ingenious creation of Nizam's, is a delightful marriage of flavors and textures. The paratha, warm and flaky, cradles succulent fillings like marinated meats or spiced vegetables, delivering a satisfying blend of savory goodness. Each bite is a symphony of taste that leaves a lasting impression. Beyond the Kathi Roll, Nizam's offers a rich menu of Mughlai dishes, including kebabs, biryanis, and curries. The aroma of their tantalizing curries wafts through the air, inviting you to savor the spices and aromatics that define this cuisine. The restaurant's ambiance exudes a classic charm, making it an ideal setting for a gastronomic journey through Mughlai delights. The service is efficient and friendly, enhancing the overall dining experience. Nizam's Restaurant, with its heritage and culinary innovation, is a must-visit for anyone seeking an authentic taste of Mughlai cuisine and the unforgettable Kathi Roll. It's a place where tradition and innovation come together to create a delightful culinary legacy.

Delicious kathi rolls... A must try when you come to Kolkata! Note: No sauces added in the roll. Still delicious

First and above all, I love the single egg and double chicken roll over here. Splendid!! All the food items are super tasty and wow! Interiors are quite good, ambience that people expect in a fine dinner. Only the improvement area is the 'Cleanliness'... floors should have been in better state. Prices are on higher side but taste will divert your thought. :)

Definitely one of the best restaurants to hop in while you are shopping at the new market. One of the best biriyani house in this city of joy. The mutton rezala is fingerlicking. Definitely try it out. The rolls are one of a kind.

We went for Nizam's famous kathi roll ...One of the best heritage restaurant in the kolkata.. It's was very good smokey juicy chicken roll with good laccha Paratha outside... You should try it .. For me roll was very good ... Apart from this they put old Bengali films pictures on their walls also their interior design was vintage type , those are too good to see .. Go with your family, friends and lovable ones ❤️❤️

Current service as well as quantity and quality of food is not good. Not worth of the hype

No matter where you are in the country, Kathi rolls and Kolkata are synonymous. Much of it is due to the famous Nizam’s in Kolkata which pioneers in Kathi rolls as the idea of kathi rolls was first conceived less than a century ago –at this humble Mughlai food eatery outside of Kolkata's famous New Market. It has served a number of delighted customers over the ages who keep coming back for more.
Nizams is known for its kathi rolls and kathi kebabs.
The chicken used in the rolls are kathi kebab which is another iconic dish of this restaurant. The kebabs are delish to taste and are grilled to perfection. The chicken is not only juicy but extremely tender and spicy. It is served with lemon, lacha onions and mint chutney which helps in bolstering it's taste.
If u ever visit nizams kathi kababs are a must try.
Nikhita Chatterjee
The food quality isn't that good.

The tandoori chicken was nice. But the butter naan laked butter. The only put it on the top piece as you can see.

Anyways these aren't their specialities. Would visit for rolls again.
Dristi Chakraborty
Nizam's special biriyani is the best. Chicken tikka kababs are also mouthwatering

This is a heritage restaurant of kolkata famous for its rolls and biryani . Food is as usual very good enough to maintain their brand popularity .

Have heard of this place from my friends and finally decided to visit this place. Their biryani and kathi rolls are famous and really have reasons to be. Would definitely recommend to try them out. The price is affordable too. Only thing i didn't like was that the place is not very clean.
Aheli Roy Choudhury
Very frequent I visit your place. I just love the mutton kathi roll. Its taste amazing. The mutton kathi roll size was enough for one person and the price was reasonable as well.
Next comes the mutton biriyani..No doubt, the taste and the quantity was good.Enough for one person and can be shared easily between two..The quality was also good..

We ordered Mutton Biriyani and Chicken Masala
Place: Nizam's, New Market
Pocket pinch: Rs. 200 and Rs. 175
Review: We were shopping around in New Market one day and got really tired. We were pleasurably surprised to see so many authentic biriyani joints around the place. A common favourite is ofcourse the Nizam's. With many people awarding this to be the best Biriyani joint of Kolkata, we loved the taste. The perfect balance of spices and flavours. Neither blande nor overpowering. Loved the place. Please visit the place if you are a Biriyani-sexual.

This vintage place is located in New Market Area near Esplande metro station. Very famous for their kathi kebab roll. Some months ago I tried their chicken kathi roll and to be honest it was absolutely delicious. The chunks of smokey spicy succulent chicken just melted in my mouth. They are also famous for their biryani.

I wanted to have something very light but filling as well. So ordered Chicken roll from the very famous Nizam restaurant at Hogg Market, Kolkata. The very first bite blown my mind. I'll tell you the reason why!

Follow @the_food_wall on Instagram.

Taste ➡️ The Chapati was thin so it was not very heavy as other rolls. The chicken stuff was filled enough that every single bite was yummy. It was perfectly balanced with spices rather than would say it has a different flavor altogether. I should have eaten this before. Oh my ❤️ Since it was a combo so I received a bowl of Phirni. It was a sweet dish made of milk, rice, cardamom, saffron, and raisins. And it satiated my taste bud like anything.
Cost ➡️ This proper Mughlai meal cost me Rs 99 only. Do try Nizam's restaurant at New Market, Kolkata. You will love it.

Nizam is my all time favourite place. The quality and taste of the food will bring u back everytime, adding on to the pocket friendly category. The price and quantity of biriyani is well justified. The kebabs as well melt in your mouth.staffs r too polite especially with students like us. Dont search for decor of this place but go for the food. Nizam never gets old.special mention is the firni(i love it cz unlike others they r just the adequate amt of sweet)
Charlotte_Carneiro #Hogggitup
This no frill place was one of my favourite on my recent trip to the city of Joy. The Kathi roll originated here, and we had no doubt believing that. The tastiest rolls packed with flavour. Curious about the kebab that goes into the roll, we ordered the Nizam's special, chicken Kathi kebab. Served with some caramelized onions and lime, this one was the highlight of our meal. We also tried the chicken biryani, which is mildly flavoured with fall-of-the-bone meat pieces and potatoes. There's not too much in terms of ambiance, but that's forgiven since the food is so so good. Can't wait to go back to Kolkata and Nizam soon.

Overall rating: 5/5

Happy hogging!

(Make sure to follow #hogggitup on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter for more)

Paneer Roll quality was very poor. I used to love this place earlier but it has lost its quality and quantity and moreover the taste was not there as it was used to be earlier.

Nizam! Nizam! Nizam! gar firdaus bar roo-e zameen ast, Hameen ast-o hameen ast-o hameen ast!
Where would we miserable food lovers be if Nizam and the colonialism hadn't created the kathi roll? What would have been our go to street food? And boy have they shown the way for all these years now!
Their mutton kebab stands out from the rest purely because of the spiciness. It is hot and spicy and it is freaking delicious! And on that note, their paratha balances the kebab with its hint of sweetness. I would recommend their rolls, paratha and kebab and kulfi falooda.
Visit them and pay them some respect, it is because of them that we get to relish roll almost everywhere!
Mayukh Banerjee
Eating here for many years. Love their rolls and firni. The kheeri roll was a personal favorite. This place does not serve beef any more
ARPITA Manna
Ordered chicken bara kabab, mutton biriyani, chicken champ, firni. Asked them to serve the kabab first... But they served the kabab, biriyani and champ together. Mutton piece was too small and not cooked properly. 3.25 pieces kababs though they mention it 4pices was ok. Champ was too spicy. Only the firni was awesome.. Don't want to go again.

I ordered (home delivery) mutton Kathi kabab. Quality is poor. No taste at all. This place is well known for Kathi kabab but this time quality is too poor..

We had the following:
Egg chicken kathi rolll which was super tasty. 4.5/5
Chicken Champ:3.5/ 5
Mutton Biryani: 3/5 the biryani had a a piece of potato and one piece of mutton but no egg. The fragrant notes of rose water were a little on the higher side. I personally prefer Arsalan Biryaniz

I had gone in since I've heard a lot about this place from numerous sources. Ordered a mutton roll and waited. 15mins gone by, the roll arrives. I struggle to find a glimpse of mutton inside. After the second bite, i chew onto a piece, and boy was I surprised. Never did i know mutton was the next best thing to rubber. okay i spit out the first piece, and carry on to give it a second chance. Come across the second piece on my fourth bite, and man, they were consistent. Disgruntled, I asked the waiter why is it so chewy, it doesn't feel edible! The gentleman that he was, pointed to two foreigners munching on rolls and said, "ohh... But they don't feel the same!". So now I had to learn eating rolls from someone who probably taste this for the first time on their life out here. I sympathize with the two foreigners, for they may've been in a fix about what they were eating. This place is somehow surving on the legacy that it was.
Calcutta Cuisines
Recently I went to this place with my friends. We had Chicken Tikka Kebab, Chicken Kathi Kebab Roll, Mutton Kathi Kebab Roll and Firni. The Chicken Tikka Kebab was very delicious. Perfectly cooked and the amount of spice was sufficient. The Firni was also very good. The sweet was in right amount. The Chicken and Mutton Kathi Kebab Roll was also very tasty. But the paratha of the roll was a bit oily, otherwise it was great.

FOOD ORDERED - Chicken Biryani, Chicken Chap, Laccha Paratha, Salad

FOOD REVIEW - Chicken biryani was pretty good for the price and when paired with Chicken Chap it felt heaven. Didn't like the Laccha Paratha though because it was fried with dalda and felt very awful. Overall it was good. Staff behavior was pretty bad.
Aniket Chattopadhyay
Ordered double egg double chicken kathi roll. Firstly, I have never eaten such a dry kathi roll ever. I literally became thirsty. And secondly, their hygiene can't be considered to any standard. I had some nose hairs in kathi roll paratha. I can tell those were nose hairs because there were a bunch of them stuck together and those were pretty small. I am disgusted even to describe this, but I really want to make people realise the standard of Nizam.
Niki 🌟
The oldest outlet of Nizam's transports you back to the era it started in. It seems like the place hasn't changed much since. With ample amount of seating inside, we enjoyed the quick service meals which were very reasonably priced. Coming to food, I had to try their signature kathi kebab roll. It tasted nice but I just wish there was more chicken in it. Also, the Mutton kebab was a disappointment - too rubbery and seemed overcooked. But murgh malai kebab and their tandoori rotis were just sensational. I fell in love with how fresh and soft the rotis/naan were. And the best conclusion to the meal was the Phirni - creamy and perfectly sweet!

This place was in my bucket list for a really long time. Finally visited this place a few days back and loved the place. It's in Esplanade can be easily found on Google maps. We ordered Nizam's special nargish biriyani, chicken kathi kabab roll, chicken cheese kathi kabab roll, egg chicken kathi kabab roll. Everything tasted so good. And the biriyani was a bit different but really tasty it was garnished with raisins, fried onions, cashew nuts and cherries. It was really good and the chicken pieces were soft and succulent. There's nothing new to say about the rolls of this place. The rolls were really good, soft and cooked perfectly.

The ambience is not so good.. it's normal. Bt Nizam's special chicken Kathi kabab was just wow... Just awesome.. aftr we had ordered kulfi with faluda it was also awesome.. the price was so reasonable.. allover happy us😊

On new year we went there because most of the other restaurants were full and this was the only option we got and luckily we got seats on that day. Nizam is one of the oldest restaurant in kolkata and heard a lot about their Kathi roll but we couldn't get to try because we were so hungry so we decided to have biriyani. We ordered two biriyani and mutton chap. Biriyani was tasty and mutton chap was awesome. Only one thing is a big let down is that ambience is a bit unhygienic. I hope they could improve their ambience .

A very old restaurant in the heart of Kolkata Esplanade.. It is the place where Kathi kabab rolls were first invited.. Its totally awesome a must try for all..

Nizam's is the very embodiment of nostalgia for me. Located at the heart of the city, New Market, this place is famous for the various types of kathi rolls that it offers.
As per the most commonly accepted story, kathi rolls originated in Nizam's when they started wrapping paranthas over their famous kababs, to make things less messy as well as to be eaten on the go.
One speciality about their rolls is that they do not contain any sauces. Onions and capsicum marinated with vinegar and blackpepper is the only accompaniment.
This place also serves amazing kababs and firni.

If you are visiting Kolkata, and want to experience the taste of some authentic rolls, then this place is a must visit.
Ankit Pal
Food was only average. Staff and waiters are too rude and unwelcoming.
Sushmita Das
Experience of Chicken kathi roll was amazing.

The kathi Chicken was well marinated ,soft ,tender and well cooked.
indian spicies were well balanced in the chicken.
the sharpness of chilli and fresh onion was perfect (for me).

The paratha of the roll was medium ,not too thick and not too thin with its yellowish brown upper crust.

It doesn't contain any tomato ketchup like most of the street rolls but it tests heavenly.

Nizam is situated in New market near Aminia. This place is famous for it's kathi kebab roll , paraths etc. This is very nostalgic place - the seating arrangements , decor .
They actually have very low maintainence . The service is prompt & staffs are quite decent.
Now coming to the food. We ordered 2 laccha paratha & 1 plate chicken tangri kebab masala , 2 cold drinks. Food was good.
1 paratha is enough for an individual , it's very heavy. The taste of tangri kebab masala was good but it's very spicy & oily.
Our Total bill was around 500/-.

Overall Rating:

Taste : 3.5/5
Service: 3/5
Value for money: 4/5
Ambience: 3/5

This was in my bucketlist for quite a long time but I was extremely disappointed when I visited here. The place is extremely unhygienic, you'll see bees and mosquitos around your table and food. The table is not properly cleaned.
Now coming to the foods, I ordered for a mutton biryani and a Chicken tikka butter masala. Honestly speaking, the local shops sell better biryani than this. I don't know what rice they use for their biryani, but whatever it is, it's basically a disaster. The gravy of tikka masala tasted pretty good but the chicken pieces were hard and chewy. The only good thing was the mutton pieces. After that, we ordered for a butter tandoori and that tasted the best among all of these. During payment, they made the nun complementary.
Biswadeep Paul
Ordered chicken biryani and biryani was not good in taste. Chicken was smelling badly and not cooked properly and the piece of the aloo was also hard and uncooked. Totally wastage of money.

They are the inventor of kathi roll in india apart from this fact. This is heaven for roll lovers. I tried chicken roll and they are best in it.

Orderd mutton biryani , mutton tum tum biryani and chicken bharta....Both the biryani were same...No dry fruit cherry etc in tum tum..never order tum tum as they give only two pieces of mutton and thats it...Nothing special....Too much of attar... not upto the mark as it used to be earlier....Really disappointed from the inventors....Please improve quality.

Double egg chicken/Mutton rolls are delicious and value for money. Quite filling. Service is prompt. Mutton kebabs (20) are succulent. Take away containers are good for transport.

●My rating solely based on MUTTON KATHI KABAB ROLL..
Situated at the heart of New Market this heritage restaurant is serving kolkatan's day in and day out.
Went with high expectations but to be honest was a bit disappointed.Heard a lot about their Kathi Kabab Rolls..ordered the Mutton variant but it was nothing special neither had it any trademark taste which could have separated it from others.Honestly it was just about average.
●Ambience was simple with a bit slow staff.
●Would definitely go back to try out Biriyani and hope for something good.
●Not recommended for Rolls from my end...

Nizam's is a famous name when it comes to kathi roll, they proudly say they are the one who introduced the concept of kathi rolls.

This place is large with a lots of table and sitting space. It's in the center of the New Market area. We tried the Chicken Roll, the Paneer roll, Veg Roll and also the Paneer Veg Roll. I also tried the fish fry. This place serves a lot of other items apart from just rolls.

The rolls we're good though a bit oily, the stuffing was good. The chicken and the veg paneer were the best of the lot. The best item however was Fish fry and the Phirni. The fish fry served with mustard sauce was nicely cooked , crunchy on the outside and soft from inside.
The Phirni was nice smooth and chilled.

Phirni , Fish Fry and the Chicken Rolls are recommended.

Ordered two mutton kathi and two double chicken egg rolls. In a word, I am extremely disappointed. Small shops in the neighborhood also serve better rolls than Nizam. Quality of the food is very poor. If not called many times waiters will not come to take orders. The place is very small and ambience is also very unsatisfactory. I would never advise you to come here.

Nizam Restaurant

Mutton roll
Price: ₹65

Mutton roll tastes very good But their is a problem of less mutton pieces rather compare to the price.
Except that the taste of the roll is really good and the mutton is like little fired from which the taste turns awesome.

Great but not the greatest. Great biryani. But I guess the rice is slightly softer in Royal India restaurant's (park circus) biryani. Else it is quite recommended.

Reached here on Saturday afternoon to taste their rolls. Finally, decided to take Mutton Kathi Roll which was the best option for me as I have not tried any Mutton Roll previously. Price of the food items are Ok. Service was also good but the seating area at first floor is quite congested due to low ceiling height.

The size was big enough and the base was of paratha thus oil content was high. Now, the stuffing was something to talk about. Capsicum and onion were the only veggies but the quantity of mutton was very low. Upon asking the staff, they said the quantity of mutton is upto normal in double mutton roll but very less in single roll which was slightly disappointing. Little amount of kasundi flavors were coming and giving a signature style to kathi rolls by balanced flavors (not very strong spice). Mutton was not soft but good enough and simple.

Overall, the taste was nice and the staff was also good. It is one of the legendary restaurants, so in future I will definitely cover more cuisines here.

This place is very famous in food blogger community.I have seen many videos in YouTube.so expectations were bit high.visited this place last week end. Had many bad experiences : 1 - as they are famous for their Kathi rolls, we ordered two egg chicken Kathi rolls but their staff said that roll is suppose to be eaten outside, roll is not allowed on table.2 - after getting the roll,we observed that it was only chicken roll,no egg was there, after telling this to their staff,he just smiled and told that sorry for the mistake.. 3 - we ordered kulfi faluda, but it was unavailable..🤐

Legendary place with a significant history. Must try Chicken Kathi Roll & Cheese Chicken Nizam Special Kabab. Staffs are very courteous.

First of all I am providing this bill, so that the restaurant can't deny that I visited this place.
I could have rated 0 start or may be negative even.
They serve rice in rose water along with potato and a piece of chicken in name of Biryani.
Just visit any roadside place to have Biryani, but not this place.
Even if they pay to the customer for eating there, 'don't eat'.
