Review Evergreen Bar & Restaurant - Kolkata (Calcutta)

Nowadays very few Chinese Eating Houses ( Restaurants) in Tangra are serving Pork. Luckily Evergreen is still making some awesome pork items. The other traditional Chinese (India Chinese) non veg items are also good as usual. The food is being prepared by family members. The liquor price is quite cheaper than the other restaurants in Tangra. Pretty homely ambiance, but if you are a person who gives priority to ambiance than food, then please don't go over there.

Friendly place, just like a home.. Liked the starters, Schezwan Chicken, in particular.. Main course was fairly average though.. Precisely speaking, the place is good if you're with your close ones, otherwise it can get somewhat boring...

This place can better be described as an eatery. Run by a family, the place doesnt provide you with glamorous interiors and all, but when food is all that matters who cares? Mr. Li was very cordial in welcoming us and the foods they served were really good. We tried quite a few dishes - namely stir fried pork, dragon chicken, pork 65, salt and pepper shrimps, prawn chips, cantonese noodles, garlic fish. All were sumptuous, a special mention for the pork 65 though. It stood out.<br/>Located near the chinese kali temple its one of the few eateries left in Tangra locality that gives you the feel that you expect from the China Town. This place hasnt so far given in to the glamour game. Will definitely be back to this place very soon.<br/>A couple of negative reviews bout this place probably suggests that they are probably a bit inconsistent in their services and quality. However, my experience with what the family had to offer was really good.<br/>See you soon Mr. Li..

It was a home delivery order for me having fried rice, meifoon and button mushroom fry. The food couldn't be worse than that. The oil used was sickening and so was the preparation. Do not get attracted by their cheap prices because so are the raw materials and oil used by them, which will spoil not only your mood but also your health for sure.

Had made a prior reservation for a group of 15 people to celebrate a birthday party. Firstly as we enter the dining room we find three men seated in the reserved area drinking alcohol. We had to ask the owner to accommodate us elsewhere as we had kids and ours was a no alcohol party, he reluctantly agreed to move them to another area. Then, we placed our order for food hoping that we would get the authentic Chinese dishes. The food that was brought to us was a disgusting sight. The quality was terrible, chilli chicken gravy and garlic prawns gravy was far from anything we could ever imagine. Both gravies were the same with prawns tossed in one and chicken in the other. The prawns were stale and had a bad odor. The chilli pork was just fat fried in oil and served with oil dripping out of each piece. When we called the waiter he took it back and refried it and brought it back. We were billed for Rs 7000/- I personally went to the owner Patrick, and told him about the quality of the food and all he said was next time we will give you better food. He refused to listen or even apologize for the horrible food and service. This place serves the most ugliest, nasty looking and bad quality food. I would rather eat the food served on the streets than at evergreen. Never ever make a mistake to eat at this place, even if it’s for free.

Located in Tangra the chinatown of kolkata. You will find many chinese restaurant here. Visited their with couple of friends as the others restaurants were fully packed up. A small restaurant with ok ambiance and simple sitting arrangements. It's a bar come restaurant , so drinks are also available. Tried dry chili chicken and sweet & sour chicken, ordinary taste. Service was fast and prices were reasonable.

Evergreen is a Chinese restaurant located at Tangra.<br/><br/>Ambience & decor is simple, with sitting arrangenents.<br/><br/>Service is bit slow. Staffs are nice.<br/><br/>Drinks are also available.<br/><br/>Tried Fresh lime soda, Mixed Hakka Chow & Chicken Drumsticks. <br/><br/>Fresh lime soda was refreshing .<br/>Chow was nice with nice fillings.<br/>Chicken Drumsticks was average.<br/><br/>Pocket pinch is economical.

I suddenly realised that I haven't reviewed this place yet. This restaurant was my first Chinese restaurant visit that too long time back when I was in primary school.<br/>Located in the interiors of Tangra, this is a really small place (I guess that's what may appear to me). We used to come here regularly long ago and were kinda self proclaimed loyalists of this place which later got shifted to Beijing.<br/>The Szechwan Prawn from here was something to bug for. As a child, I used to hog a full plate of it containing ten pieces of it like a beast along with a plate of Rice Noodles.<br/>Don't know how is it doing these days. Haven't been here for a long time. I may not like the food here anymore as my ideas about Chinese food has broadened by eating out at places. But Evergreen will always remain 'evergreen' in my heart when this would come to a Calcutta Chinese experience. Happy Dining! :)

The food is good, ambience okay, orders are prompt to be delivered. The only drawback is management amd their people handling skills. As soon as the clock strikes 1030 they are going to pester you to eat fast...literally. But collegegoers should definitely go. Its pretty easy on the pockets.

The moment we got in, ambiance was good enough, and we started with a Pork dish which was so good... But moving towards the main course I don't know what went wrong, the food quality started degrading.... Hence the verdict would be that the place is good for starters and not the main course...no way...cheers!!!

Well this restaurant is located in Tangra. It is the oldest restaurant in tangra. The ambience is simple, now coming to the food we had chilli chicken with gravy, chilli fish gravy, fried prawns, mixed cantonese chowmein.Chilli Chicken with gravy was ok in taste, chicken was soft, fried prawn was good in taste, chilli fish with gravy was good and in mixed cantonese chowmein with chicken and prawns the taste was good but the prawns were dry and bit hard to bite.

Evergreen is a shabby old school eatery of Tangra. Recommend place only for college stags for cheap booze. Food is the weakest link here. We had Lemon Chicken, Sliced Chilli Pork, Chilli Prawn with Mixed Cantonese Chowmein and Szechuan Chicken.<br/><br/>Lemon Chicken was too sweet with no presence of lemon flavour. Pork was bland and chewy. Prawn had overdose of salt. Chowmein had less noodles but overdone with boiled tasteless vegetables. Szechuan Chicken was only decent dish on table.<br/><br/>Service was poor. Tables were not cleaned. Had to send back pork as it tasted horrible. Top floor family section was denied to us but saw drunk stags were coming out from the same section. 2% extra was charged for card payment and the waiter was one of a kind of shameless fellow kept asking for tips even before payment.

Located at Tangra<br/>Well had a quick visit in the place enjoyed some Chinese food and alcohol. The food was OK and the ambiance was not so great though but the waiter and service was fine. Taste was I won't say a perfect but yes 1 time it's fine.

There is a saying - "Keep your circle small and your beer chilled" - just after a horrible 45 minutes in "Shun Li" with hot beer and tasteless chicken with veg, Evergreen was again the suggestion of Subha Thakur and this time it was truly awesome. Just we entered and the chilled tuborg was served; a sip of which actually helps to remove all worries all tension of your office and your personal life. Anyhow being in a hurry to wrap up quickly we ordered for one 1/2 dry chilli chicken. It didn't take much time; no garnishment simple preparation with a shredded green chillis - typical china town touch!! Like the looks, the taste was very nice as well, the chicken was so soft that it gave me a feel of chicken cheese preparation.Few points to be highlighted -<br/>1. Price of food and drinks are very affordable <br/>2. Separate family section<br/>3. No smoking inside<br/>4. Parking at owners risk on the road outside<br/><br/>Bottomline - worth a visit in such a cheap yet nice place with food good in taste and cost less!! 😀😀

Located in Tangra<br/><br/>Basic china town decorations with red chinese lanterns.<br/>Add to that red tables.<br/><br/>The food here is good if not the best, a setback comes in the form of too dry a fried rice but the other dishes like the chilli chikcen, green chilli fish and noodles do a fine job.<br/><br/>Quick service and a easier pinch on the pocket follow.

If u want to eat good Chinese food, not always searching for a classic bar, then it's d very place....Located at South tangra,it serves a moderate price Chinese food with Alcohol, but alcohol is of no special, foods are hit ones. For starters try out Chilly prawn n dry chicken especially marinated in white sauce. I give 10 on 10 for starters n for d main course u can opt for mixed fried rice(prawn sizes are quite impressive) n any chicken preparation as Manchurian or chilly or garlic etc. All r delicious n rating 7 on 10. I cant say anything for ambience cz when I entered, total restaurant was empty...very peaceful. I like d experience thoroughly.

firstly this is Not a restaurant ..................... & No this is not a Bar either .........<br/><br/>What it is Then ??? ........ It's a Eating House which serves alcohol as well .....<br/><br/>What Is a eating house, that too chinese .. ??? ........ eating houses are No-Frills places where one can Eat without burning a hole in their pockets . <br/><br/>Let me explain ...... If you're a veteran visitor to chinatown ..... you'll know ... places like ...... Shunli .... Kimfa .... ... Lee eating house ( lee Garden ) .... Chung ( sadly closed ) ....... flora restaurant ...... probably even namking ...................... Evergreen falls into this category .... ... A GOOD PLACE for a WORKING LUNCH or DINNER ....... OWNED BY a VERY CARING & LOVING Chinese FAMILY ... & I am Indebted to them for he Kindness that they showed today <br/><br/>This Place deserves a 3.5 / 5 ...... ..but i still gave 3 only because of reasons i'll disclose later <br/><br/>Located just ahead of Chinese kalibari ..... flanked By ..namking & flora restaurant on either side ...... Evergreen's USP is it's Owners ... Kind souls ... who make sure ... that customers comes first .... even before themselves ... <br/><br/>I went to Topsia today for a work related issue around 12 pm ... while returning ... i thought maybe should try tangra for lunch ....... a colleague was there with me .... but the issue was that we were carrying only Rs 1200 between both of us .... Not Enough for the more established names like Big Boss , kimling , Golden Joy , Beijing , kafulok ............... probably not enough for 2nd rung restaurants ... like Ming Garden , Hot Wok , China gardens , or golden Empire also ............ <br/><br/>What to do ??? ... we decided to go For Shunli or kimfa ..... upon reaching chinese kalibari ..... we found that the area was suffering from a power cut ...... we went towards Shunli .... " loadshedding Hai .... Kitchen closed for now " .... Says one middle-aged Chinese Man .... sitting near the gate which is the entrance to both Shunli & Kimfa ..... " lekin Generator To Hoga na ?? " I asked ....... the same man replies ... " hai but chalu hoga after 3 pm .. Please go to big boss , kafulok or beijing if you want Ac " ............why ?? .... we realised Why .... It's because we were only TWO ... & it does NOT make " business sense " to them .... to switch on generator For Kitchen & AC for restaurant for ONLY TWO people .... that too Around 12.15 pm afternoon ... when there is virtually No crowd expected either ........The Bigger ones though have 24/7 power backup .... but they were out of our budget <br/><br/>A bit demoralized we roam around the area for options ...... Chung... we found closed for renovations .... Kafulok out of our budget ..... cannot walk back 7 mins in that searing heat towards lee garden ( lee eating House ) or China gardens near Beijing ..... left with flora, namking , & evergreen in the vicinity ..... namking again same story as shunli / kimfa .. power cut .... flora did not inspire much confidence .... so opted for EVERGREEN ..... .... <br/><br/> We were tired by now ... & we were expecting same excuse of kitchen closed due to powercut ... in evergreen as well ...... ... but to our surprise ... a gracious lady welcomed us in .......... not a customer in sight ... probably because it was ONLY 12.30 pm noon ... that too a weekday .... <br/><br/> " do you have power backup ?? " ... I ask ... tired by now ...... " oh yes ... we are turning on the generator ... the AC would be running cool in 10 mins " .... the gracious lady replies ......... we can hardly believe our ears.... " A/C on Generator ? just for the two of us ?? " ....... " sure ... Why not ?? " the lady replies back .... <br/><br/>i personally Never felt so gratified ( In Chinatown atleast ) .... however trivial the gesture may have been ... I believe it's the heart that matters .....<br/><br/>Now Coming to the Main part ..... the Food ......& the Ambiance <br/><br/> Ambiance is Nothing flattering ... very similar to Lee Garden ( Lee eating House ) or Chung ... or at best kimfa ... the restaurant has a lot of room for improvement in this regard .... the tables & chairs ... are standard " neelkamal " ... if you know what i mean ... <br/><br/>We Looked at the menu .... both drinks & food .... only mid-level brands available in alcohol .... food menu though ... is a lot more diverse ( as expected ) ... I opt myself out of drinks .... since it was only 12.20 pm noon ...... my colleague however couldn't help , but order as it was his First time in tangra ...... & probably he isn't used to the Liquor prices of chinatown ..... ..... <br/><br/>he settles for 1 & 1/2 peg of mcdowells rum ( 60 + 30 )ml .....probably because of the soothing effect of the A/c ..... along with 2 bottles of coke .... in starters we finalize HALF PLATE pepper fish ( Around Rs 200 for half plate ) ..... the fish arrives in 12 mins flat .... Best Part is that It had 10 pieces .....that too bigger than average sized pieces ......... tastes good too .... not like basa .... cannot be bhetki ... surely not .... what was it then ??? .... turned out to be Katla ..... ... " we don't serve basa here " says the owner ... ( a true gentleman, & husband of the gracious lady mentioned before ) ....... " even till 4 years back , we used to serve bhetki .... but with prices soaring ... we couldn't afford anymore .... most of the eateries , fell for the lure of basa , because of less bones & cheap prices , we settled for katla as a more affordable option " ....<br/><br/> My friend quips in here ............ " but even katla costs around 340 / kg nowadays " ......... " how can you provide 10 pieces for around 200 bucks ?? " .... the owner replies ...... " we usually have long term contracts with our vendors ...... they supply us at around 240 / kg rate .. & the 10 fillet pieces weighs around 400 grams approx ... but yes you're correct .... if prices keeps soaring ... even we may have to opt for basa "<br/><br/>.... I felt a bit sad hearing this ...... however while my friend was busy chatting .... I had quietly finished off 6 pieces of the pepper fish ( katla or NO katla ... It was good ) .....<br/><br/>Much impressed ... we opted for the main course ..... we decided upon .... 1 plate shrimp gravy chowmein & 1 plate szechwan prawn .... <br/><br/>both the dishes arrived in less than 15 mins ....... as expected ... the szechwan prawn turned out to be prawn balls ...... which is only to be expected ..... considering the price of both shrimp & prawn nowadays ...... but again it had around 8-10 pieces ..... taste wise both the dishes were ok ... good enough but by no means great .... but again QUANTITY impressed me .......... <br/><br/>we finished off our ' eventful ' luncheon outing in tangra today by 2 pm ...<br/><br/> the bill came at a reasonable 798 for TWO i.e ( Rs 675 + Vat + service ) <br/><br/>For the First time in my life i felt that the VAT was worth it ..... because if the owners did NOT switch on the generator for A/c .... both of us may had to go back half- empty stomach today .... Because i am certain .... Rs 1200 certainly would NOT have been enough .... even in nearby kafulok ..... considering that my colleague had alcohol along with a full fledged meal ...<br/><br/> Having said all these ................ i would still like to mention .... that despite the kindness of owners .... there is room for improvement in this restaurant ..... it's time they work on the ambiance & the decor along with the curtlery they use ........<br/><br/>I would have certainly given It 3.5 /5 ....... but when i sat down to write my review i realized ... that today was a one-off special scenario .......... Not everyday there will be powercuts .......... not everyday shunli will refuse to turn on generator ,........ not everyday our budget would be less ... therefore on a Regular day , under normal circumstances .... would I opt for Evergreen ahead of kafulok or big boss or any other ?? ................. ummmmmm ............ donno .... really donno ..........but that's only my view <br/><br/> WHO SHOULD GO THEN : Mainly people who love Kimfa / shunli .... but find both of them full..... then yes it makes sense to go to Evergreen .<br/><br/>Overall verdict : group of 4 ??? within budget ??? having only Rs 2000 among the 4 ?? & yet wanna have both alcohol & food ?? visit Evergreen .... alcohol is real cheap ... food taste is good ........ but Big thumbs up for Quantity ........<br/><br/> But as I said Before ..... expect eating house atmosphere .......

'Evergreen' is located at South Tangra road at Chinatown, tangra just near from Kim Fa.Today I've visited here with my friends for lunch. When we entered this restaurant,it is totally empty, only one waiter is here.Ambience is old & some chinese photos are hanging on the wall.We have ordered here two plates Chicken Fried Rice, two plates Egg Fried Rice with half plate chilli chicken & half plate schezwan chicken. After 10 minutes the food has come.Fried rice is tasty & very hotty.Schezwan chicken is delicious, chilli chicken is also good. But chilli chicken's pieces are little hard.Food quantity is good.Atlast we have finished with Thums Up.

Most delicious snack for starters-Chilli Prawns... I love it as well as the main dishes. The main dishes are like mixed chow and meifoon and most sizzling food is sizzlers..once u taste the sizzling sizzlers...u would definitely love to have it once again

A pork lover's paradise!! very cozy.. family section is on the 1st floor..people fag inside the restaurant...no such issue of going outside..their dry chilly pork is to die for..the only negative point is that the choice of beer is limited..

Evergreen makes one of the best Chilly Prawns in Tangra. The Cantonese Noodles is also a delight to have. Crispy and made using the freshest veggies. The taste is just mind blowing! I have tried many other restaurants in Tangra, but Evergreen makes the best value for money food here in Chinatown. I am definitely visiting this place again. Thumbs up !!!
