We Bengali’s are “Bhojon Roshiks”, i.e., foodies by heart, and we love our traditional cuisine from the core of our hearts. We believe that true Bengali food can only be made in Bengali homes. But we too get tired of eating at home especially after this lockdown phase of our life.
So, if you’re thinking of eating out and preferring Bengali cuisine this is the right place to go to. 6 Ballygunge Place, is like the king of Bengali cuisine restaurants in Kolkata. Each and every dish will make explosions of flavors inside your mouth. Oh, the smell, the aroma, the fragrance, will leave you mesmerized.
I went to this amazing place right before the lockdown in the month of February on my parent's anniversary for a sumptuous Bengali meal and what a delight that was!
We ordered the following items off the menu:
Dab Chingri: Prawns roasted inside a tender coconut. This was pretty nice. It’s a side dish to go along with white plain rice.
Kasha Mangsho: The traditional home-cooked mutton recipe. The mutton pieces were very tender along with the perfect amount of fat. Yes, we love the fat xD
Bhuna Mangsho: Another mutton recipe, and this one I would highly recommend. It was so tasty that it would just water your mouth as soon as it arrives on your table. The spices used in this are very well cooked and the aroma will keep you stuffing it in your mouth.
Basanti Pulao: The perfect accompaniment with the other items we ordered.
Now in the deserts section:
Mishti Doi: The best way to end your meal. A perfect Bengali dessert.
Indrani: This was small cottage cheese balls, rosogollas in thickened milk topped with dry fruits. This was so so. I would prefer rosomalai over this.
Baked Mihidana with Rabdi: Oh, this was indeed the showstopper. A highly recommended dessert item that will keep you asking for more!

A perfect place to have a tasty Bengali meal with your family and friends and believe me this place won’t disappoint you at all. And yes, they also had buffet service available earlier but due to the pandemic, it might be suspended for the current time. You can always call them up and enquire and they’ll assist you happily.

Due to corona pandemic the presentation has to suffer a lot. However the dab chingri too wasn't served in a dab which is really disappointing knowing the fact that corona virus doesn't spread from food and the coconut itself being a biological product it's definitely wasn't going to be reused so this arouse the doubt that dab chingri isn't cooked inside a coconut. That's fine because no matter what it tastes awesome. The price is a bit over budget but when it comes to taste, everything soothes you.

It was Mahalaya and my birthday as well when I decided to try out Mochar Ghonto and Chitol macher muitha for lunch. The Mochar Ghonto was delicious , it was soft, well cooked and spicy having been cooked using the best banana fruit. Now comes the interesting part of the review. Due to unusual rush, the restaurant ended up delivering Potoler Dolma instead of Chitol Muitha. When I called the restaurant to inform them about the matter, they sincerely apologized and requested me to enjoy the Dolma as a gift. They also promised to deliver the Muitha as soon as they could which they did in quick time. This was an extremely generous gesture by the restaurant considering the tough covid times that the hospitality industry is going through. Both Potoler Dolma and the Muitha were cooked using the same style but tasted awesome. The Parwal stuffing tasted awesome while the Muitha was soft and juicy. 6 Ballygunge Place, you have completely bowled me over and I promise to come back here with family n friends .

6 Ballygunge Place is a restaurant that had been on our bucket list for a very long time indeed, since our school days (around 2007-2008). That does have something to do with the restaurant being in the neighbourhood of my school (South Point High). Anyway we finally managed to go here post-lockdown. After the usual act of going through the temperature checks and hand sanitizing, and the somewhat unusual act of tackling the automated shoe-cover machine (much enjoyable, although my companion would disagree), we were seated in the waiting area for a short while as our table was being made ready to sit at. We also got the food menus during this time. The staff were courteous and polite in their behaviour and the ambience of the place was also lovely. The place had minimalistic deco in both the waiting area and the dining room, which looked pleasant, however the hand drawn fans that are used for deco can probably use a dusting. After being seated at our table, we placed our order which was gondhoraj chicken, rice, chhanar dalna, daab chingri and pabda jhal. Before long we got our sets of disposable plates and cutlery, and I must say this is the best set of disposable plates that I have received after the lock-down. The service was good and prompt. Coming to the food, I feel it is best to describe each dish individually. The gondhoraj chicken was absolutely delicious. The long, succulent chicken strips were perfectly juicy and had the wonderful coating giving them such a wonderful frangrance and taste. The rice was very slightly over boiled. The rice grains themselves were moderately long, I would have liked them to be slightly longer and to not have clumped together. For the price they are charging, the rice is expected to be better. The chhanar dalna was good but I would have appreciated if the gravy had been simmered for a slightly longer period than it was. They got the sweetness of the individual balls of chhana absolutely on point. The daab chingri was delicious and the gravy tasted even better when some gondhoraj was added to the gravy mixed with rice. The pabda jhal was great, I finally got my ghoti companion to try out pabda jhal with shorshe and she absolutely loved the fish (obviously, who does not love pabda?) but failed to acknowledge that the shorshe could have been a bit more strong (again obvious, since when do ghotis acknowledge the awesomeness of shorshe?). After this we ordered bhapa doi for dessert and it was an absolute treat and a must try for all who visit this place. All in all it was a great lunch and we will definitely go back to try out more dishes from here.

6 Ballygunge never disappoints. Went after very long for dinner. The place was relatively vacant but still every hygienic measure was taken by the management (They charge you ₹50 extra per person as hygiene charges).
The food was as good as ever. Ilish bhapa tasted very fresh and delicious. Staff was also taking absolute care while serving food.

If you want the best of Bengali food, just head out to the nearest 6 ballygunge place, a restaurant which is known for its authentic Bengali menu and quality of food. Try booking in advance as there will be quite a rush.
1. Fish Kabiraji : Ordered this as Fish roll was not available, which was my original preference. Fish fillet covered in egg and deep fried with a cover of fluffy egg fritters, quite filling and yummy.
2. Gondhoraj chicken : strips of chicken with lime zest and lemongrass, a personal favorite. Absolutely delicious and recommended. Do not miss this.
3. Kaju kismish pulao : a sweet pulao with cashews and raisin. A good pairing with rich gravies.
4. Kakdar jhal : a whole crab in a thick spicy masala curry. Although a whole lot effort goes in eating it, it's worth the effort.
5. Dhakai pora mangsho : mutton cooked to absolute tenderness in a dark brown rich gravy which is absolutely mouthwatering.
6. Indrani : a upgraded version of Malaiguti, a good one at that too. A good end to a great meal.
Ambience: old Bengali style mansion and decor from the Zamindari era.
Pocket pinch : 2100 for two. A bit on the higher side but worth it.

This place is evergreen with their quality food and top notch service. They have an aesthetic ambience, with cozy interiors reflecting the Bengals culture. Food quality is constant since the last few years, but the quantity in the a la carte menu has decreased. Hospitality is commendable.

Came to Kolkata during Durga Puja after 8 years . Wanted to try Bengali authentic cuisine. Reserved our table in advance and had no wait at all . The menu on the buffet was well chosen , from starters to dessert , everything was delicious. We also ordered Hilsa fish from Ala carte option . I will highly recommend this place . All our servers were attentive and cared about our experience

A must try restaurant if you are visiting Kolkata to indulge in the savoury flavours of authentic bengali cuisine. Expect a few minutes of waiting time, however the wait is worth it. The food menu is little on the expensive side.

We decided to celebrate the New Year with a sumptuous lunch at 6- Ballygunge Place, one of the finest restaurants in Kolkata. We were a family of seven, and we were warmly welcomed by Chef Sushanta Sengupta, who is a friend of ours and a perfect gentleman. He ensured that we had a comfortable and enjoyable dining experience. The food was simply superb, with a variety of dishes that showcased the best of Bengali cuisine. We started with mutton chops and 'Bak' phool bhaja, which were crispy and tender. Then we had chicken gondhoraj fries, which were spicy and tangy, with a hint of the aromatic gondhoraj lemon. The main course was Chetal macher muitha, Kosha mangsho, a rich and succulent mutton curry, and radhaballabhi with chola dal, a stuffed puri with a sweet and spicy lentil accompaniment. We also had rice and some refreshing drinks, such as 'Debi Chaudhurani', a virgin mojito with a twist, and 'Gondhoraj Ghol', a yogurt-based drink with Gondhoraj lemon and mint. To end the meal on a sweet note, we were offered sweet curd and patishapta, a traditional Bengali dessert of thin crepes filled with coconut and jaggery, as a complimentary gesture from the chef. The service was impeccable, with Sujon Bannerjee, the host and server, being attentive and courteous. He guided us through the menu and suggested the dishes that suited our preferences and palates. He also checked on us frequently and made sure that we had everything we needed. We had a wonderful time at 6- Ballygunge Place, and we would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a fine dining experience in Kolkata. The food, the ambiance, the service, and the hospitality were all top-notch, and we left with a smile on our faces and a satisfaction in our hearts. 😊 Mrs S.Sinha

6 Ballygunge Place in the heart of Kolkata is an absolute must-visit for those craving authentic Bengali food. The heavenly taste of dishes like Ilish and Mutton Kosha, paired with exceptional service, made our brief layover memorable. I'm glad I chose this gem to satisfy my mom's craving during our 9-hour layover on the way to Bangkok from Siliguri. Thank you, Ballygunge Place, for a truly satisfying experience!

If you want to taste authentic Bengali food this is the right place, beautiful decor it gives you old era vibe. You can try buffet or A la Carte but I will suggest to try buffet if you are visiting this place during weekend as it takes long for your order to come. It is expensive place but worth it. Will come again
