Good Bengali Food... Quiet Ambience... Little bit costly as per what they served... Overall a good one for having a bengali lunch with friends and family...
Nice place. Ambience is at par and ideal for bengali cuisine. Run all by women. Food was quality. Have lunch with chitol muithya and vetki paturi. Both the item was good.
I am a regular here - even my table is almost fixed, the 'Didi's (stewardess) know.
Run by all women members - this place is a 'home away home' as far as authentic Bengali cooking is concerned.
Menu is simplistic however essentials of Bengali cuisine - like 'Mangsher Jhol' (Mutton Curry), 'Pabda Mach' or 'Topshe Fry' in Non-Veg items would blow off many so called star 'Bengali Restaurants' false pride & unrealistic extravaganza.
Being a Vegetarian, I prefer ordering a rice (I find their Rotis little coarse), Dal, Aloo Bhaja, a plate from their available Veg-menu for the day - either Phoolkopir Dalna (Cauliflower in thick gravy), Begun Bahar (a tasty prep with Brinjals as key ingredient), Lau Ghanta (Gourd), Dhokar Dalna or just simply Mixed Veg-Curry.
In summer days you can start with a nice coolant like Aam Porar Sherbat while deciding on the main course.
In dessert - 'Gokul Pithe' is a signature one, however at times if you are lucky enough, you may get a taste of their freshly made Patisapta or Chusir Payesh (you may love to re-born as Bengali and be back in Kolkata for this !!!)...
'Didi's' welcome & personal attention will make the experience all the more unforgettably wholesome...
The price is on the higher side but the ambience and the food is good ... The vetki fry will simply melt in your mouth .. The kochi patha r mansho was light less spicy and good .. We had the Ilish thali .. The fish was ok ...
The restaurant serves authentic Bengali food. Being established in 1952 and fully operational from 1972, this was the first one to serve only Bengali food - a pioneering concept indeed. We opted for rice, daal, aloo bhaja, bekti fry (only one piece was available), mocha chingri, ilish bhapa, kochi panthar jhol, pineapple chutney, gokul pithey. All the items tasted really good. The hilsa was fabulous, so was the tender mutton curry.
It is run by women and their warmth and eagerness to serve can be felt easily. Added advantage is watching trams passing by while savouring the food - a touch of pure Kolkata.
As for the food, we rate them way ahead of other fancied restaurants in Kolkata.
a pure bengali feeling....inside the restaurant....taste is gud......
they r having an old age home behind the restaurant....visiting that place......brings peace......to my mind.....
I had learnt about this place thought highway on my plate and had wanted to go there for its authentic Bengali cuisine. It is run by simple ladies . The quantity is less but the food tasted amazing. It was light and tasty. The ambience was plain but nice.
I had been to this place in 2008 and the fact that i still remember the food vouches for how amazing it was.Suruchi was what a quintessential tourist of kolkatta must go to.The rui mach, iilish mach, dal ,rice and the thali is delicious and very satisfying.Huge recommendation if any of my mumbai friends plan to visit kolkatta someday .
After probably 15 yrs I went for Lunch at Suruchi. With Sukto, Dal, bhat, alu bhaja, Ilish mach, Malpoa. One of the low profile home style, standard eateries. The locality is downbeat. Parking is an issue. Pricing is VFM. Serviced and run entirely by Ladies. Amateur homely personal touch can be expected. One of my favourites. 16th October. 2014
This was the best food in our Kolkata trip. Ate the thali with jhujhure aaloo bhaja, parshe, bhetki, mishti doi. Everything was amazing. We got greedy and also ordered motorshutir kochuri. Another divine eat.
Because Elliot Road is so congested, I am enclosing some directions to this amazing authentic Bong outlet for heavely Bong food.
Google Map took me half km ahead, so perhaps this will be of help.
After you enter Eliot Road, keep your eyes on the left. After some 15 to 20 buildings you will find the entrance, photo 2.
Photo 1 is the view from the entrance to the junction of Eliot Rd amd AJC Bose Rd.
A picture of some of the yummy food we had and one of the menu. However, only selected items are available on a particular day and not all at once. You can phone and book though in advance.
There is parking available for a limited number of cars. The exremely helpful Security Guard at the gate will guide you.
It's an unique eating outlet, managed and run by women co-operative. Clean environment. They offer nice Bengali cuisine. Price is moderate. One of the best places to take meal in this area. One thing one must keep in mind, it closes down by 4PM!
A very good restaurant for family. The service is very pleasant and the special about this place is food. Food quality is so good that it feels like home.
The place is served by only ladies of self-help group. Ambience is moderate but clean. Most of the served bengali foods are tasty except few dishes viz. আলুভাজা contains lots of oil, ডাল is not up to the mark. First time tried ইলিশ ধোকা here.
After long time found a restaurant serving Bengali food , which will make you remembering the taste you used to relish having the food cooked by your grandmother!
Beautiful food. But I ate it all and didn’t put a photo on.
How many clean restaurant just around the corner from the mother Theresa house and the Baptist missionary Society.
Lovely ladies and a wonderful cause
Tasty and cheap.
Added that you are helping to the essential collective: women.
Must visit for authentic and traditional Bengali cuisine. They also prepare Bengali sweet pies (pithe puli, patisapta, payas ) etc.during winter season (Poush Sankranti). Very tasty preparation but not teeming with oil and spices, and hence gut friendly.
Loved the ambience, totally like home...it's an entirely ladies driven restaurant.Food is very tasty. Price is a bit on the higher side but overall a nice experience.
