On my recent visit to Bapammas, I realised how an ambience can add flavour to the food that you tasted. Bapammas is a traditional house that has been converted into a restaurant. Thus the place is synonym to the name of the eatery.

The structured rooms provide you a private space to add conversations to your meal.
It's famous for serving fish dishes prepared in various Mangaloreon styles. Among the tawa fry/masala fry and rava fry options we tried the masala fry option of meru meen along with the ultimate choice bondas ghee roast. The fishes were as delicious as any Mangaloreon would expect it to be. Along with it obvious choices we also ordered an chicken biryani. The masala of the biryani is worth appreciation, not too spicy and no heavy aroma.

A place worth many visits.
This was an amazing experience!!! We were to visit a restaurant called Machali..just opposite to this restaurant.. wanting to taste Mangalorian food and so we landed at this place...very clean and neat..homely atmosphere..coming to the food...enjoyed to the fullest...absolutely authentic preparation and fresh seafood served with all smiles!! What else can one expect!!! Shell fish..Anjal fish fry (king fish)..fish curry rice...fingerlicking!!! Overall a must try!!
A suggestion to the restaurant owners to have a display board on the main road or towards the entry lane approaching the restaurant would add to gain customers genuinely in search of good authentic food!!!

We happen to be at this place during our visit to Surathkal Mangalore, we were looking for authentigested manglorean food. Localites suggested to try BAPPAMAS. Initially when we entered this place it was like some one home where there are couple of tables placed, but the waited and the lady owner was very humble and made us occupy the tables later they suggested to try Korri roti, Ghee roast prawns, ghee roast chicken, Anjal (king fish curry) brown rice. All the items were very good especially korri roti. Ghee roast prawns is good but too much of ghee makes dish greasy and heavy. But must try is Anjal (King fish) curry with rice. Awesome coconut based gravy with fresh water Anjal fish.

Food- 4 star

Ambiance- 2.5 Star

Service- 3 Star.

Cost- 900 for 4

Don't expect frill but simple authentic food.

Visited August 2016

Bappamas is a wonderful place to have a lunch but is handicapped by the presence of Machali opposite to it. Had it been placed somewhere else it would have had booming business. The place has great seafood. Just a tad pricy. Worth a visit. Seating could be improved. Enjoy!

Food was good and delicious but was little overpriced. But a hotel to be visited if a rare Mangalore visitor. Table, hall n also Rest room were clean but poor facility.

I have been here twice and did not enjoy the food here as much as the other sea food restaurants in Mangalore. A homely ambience. The prawns deepfry was not upto the mark and the anjal gheeroast was decent. The preparations could have been better.

Awesome sea food. Period !

Its the best sea food i have had in Dakshina Kannada. Typical Konkani Coastal cuisine with a lot of Asofetida ! They claim not to add any food colours. Must try in mangalore.

Regarding Taste compare to Giri Manja, Machili,Narayana is not good. Also Fishes are not fresh one.
If we compare price its too costly compare to above mentioned hotels. But we can go for chicken biriyani.
For fish items I prefer Machili,Giri manja, Narayana.

Konkani sea food restaurant similar to Narayana and Giri manja in its setup not all that expensive costs 400 odd bucks for a decent meal taste isn't that consistent which can be noticed on subsequent visits

Fish lover? And in mangalore? You must visit places that serve fish thali and other mind blowing fish delicacies . Bappamas is one among them .

The fish thali consists of boiled rice served with fish curry , pickle, fryums and a portion of vegetable dish prepared for that particular day .
This marks thestaple food of Mangalorean's .
What could enhance this ? Probably a fish Tawa or masala fry? Bang on! This would be the best lunch you could have . Simple and breathtakingly delicious .

Ambience : 3 ( simple yet very clean)
Food : 4

Ashmitha

Being a Goan at heart, not being in Goa makes me miss home. The foodie that I am, craves for some home made food every now and then. Then I go food hunting exploring places that serve food closest to home food. On one of such expeditions, I went to Bappamas for lunch. They boast of Konkani food and specialise in seafood preparations. Sea food has always been my favourite. And so this place seemed perfect. I knew I would have a hearty meal when I went through the menu.

Don't quite know why there is such a hype for this place. The food is decent and homely, nothing extraordinary. Quantity provided for takeaway is very bad (This made me cut a whole point from my rating). The prices are on the higher side compared to the quantity of food provided. Giving this place a pass for better options available in the vicinity (eg: Machali).

In Mangaluru, the latest restaurant which is in competition with other seafood joints is Satyanna's Hotel Bappamas. In case you are wondering what "Bappamas" means, it is "Grandma" (Dad's Mom) in Konkani. Just take a walk down Sharada Vidyalaya road till you reach the Bappamas sign board, take a left (if you are coming from City Point) and you will find an old house which has been converted into a restaurant.

Once you enter the gate, you will see a beautiful 'tulsi' to your right. The entrance is on the left hand side. The owners greeted us with a smile. Even though the place was crowded, but it didn't take long for us to be seated inside one of the rooms. Whether it is a hall or a room, there are tables and stools to accommodate all the customers.

The waiter came immediately to take our order. At the entrance, you can find a big board with the daily menu. After hearing the list once again from the waiter, we ordered the following:

1. Paneer Ghee Roast - One plate of Paneer Ghee Roast is sufficient for 2 people. The paneer pieces were cut into tiny even cubes and the ghee roast masala tasted delicious. Unlike some other places, the masala was not very oily which makes one feel very heavy after eating this dish. I was happy because it was not extremely spicy and went well with the boiled rice and saaru.

2. Anjal Masala Fry - My friend ate one portion of Anjal Masala Fry. By looking at the color of the masala, we could make out that it wasn't very spicy. After tasting it, she said it was quite bland. I am guessing the masala did not have many chillies and Anjal tastes much better only if it is spicy/extremely spicy.

3. Meals - Vegetarian - If you order a Vegetarian meal, you get a thali filled with pickle, a huge dollop of Boiled or White Rice (as per your choice), a vegetable palya - today it was Potato and Beans Upkari (Palya), a curry - Potato, Beans and Black Eyed Peas cooked in Coconut gravy - a typical Konkani gravy served for lunch/dinner and finally, a saaru. Today, they served one of my favorite which happened to be horse gram saaru tempered with garlic. The combination of boiled rice, saaru and paneer ghee roast was awesome! As I needed more rice to finish off the Paneer Ghee Roast, I ordered for an extra bowl. Extras items are charged as the curries/rice are not unlimited.

4. Meals - Non - Vegetarian - If you order for a Non - Vegetarian meal, you get a thali with almost the same items which are served in the Vegetarian one. The only difference is, instead of a Vegetable Curry, you get a medium size bowl of fish curry and a smaller bowl of the saaru. Buttermilk is also served with the meals, but we skipped drinking it as the weather was quite cool today. The fish curry was good and medium spicy.

The service is fast and the waiters are nice too. While eating, the owner came by to ask if we wanted to order anything else. The plates are cleared in a neat manner and the tables are cleaned up immediately. Though there is a hand wash at the side of the restaurant, the waiter brought us a finger bowl and we felt extremely happy with the hospitality.

Our meal today costed Rs. 400. When compared with other seafood joints, Bappamas is expensive. But the food was good and definitely worth trying once just to see what it is all about.

We paid the bill and while leaving, the owners asked us how we liked the food. We were happy that they asked us and this gave us a chance to let them know that the Anjal Masala Fry would taste better if it was spicier. He told us that many customers have told them this and they plan on making it spicier from now on.

Bappamas is open from 11am to 3.30 pm and 7pm to 10.30 pm - Tuesday to Sunday. On Monday, they are open only till afternoon. They have a Parcel Service, so you can pick up your favorite fish/meals/etc and enjoy it in the comfort of your own home. If you are not able to go to Bappamas, they offer Free Home Delivery. Not sure if there is a limit on how much you should order or on the distance.

In case you are a Chicken Fan, do not worry, because Bappamas also serves Chicken Biriyani and Chicken Ghee Roast. For Vegetarians, other than the Paneer Ghee Roast, they serve Baby Corn/Mushroom Ghee Roast, Neer Dosa and Chappathi.

On our way to be seated, I saw a fridge which had a huge stock of Soft Drinks. So you can choose to drink this if you don't feel like having water and/or buttermilk.
Bappamas is a restaurant where you can enjoy a meal and that too leisurely, without any outside noise, or for that matter, even the noise of other customers. We finished our meal within 30 minutes and while leaving, we could see the other tables were all occupied.

Thanks Bappamas for the yummy lunch!

Food: 4/5
Ambiance: 5/5
Service: 5/5
