Review Mani's Lunch Home - Mumbai

Jigar Budhdev
It is an excellent place to have an authentic South Indian lunch meal. These people are from Palakkad so the Rasams, Sambars and Avials are to die for. You have to wait for your turn to eat. They take people in batches since everything is served thali style. Sambar and Rasam are unlimited and the rest of the extra items are paid. It is an excellent value for money meal catering to the masses; hence the prices are low. They only serve lunch. Zomato and Swiggy are enabled. A must visit place in Sion.

South Indian types of Lunch thali. Must Try. Place near close to Sion Station. Food Quality best. Only option for Thalis, only Rise Thali, Chapati thali, rise chapti thali. Best place for Lunch and Dinner, Mostly Saturday closed, Budgeted cost for Extra and thalis also. In 120 rs you will enjoy thali and extra chapati and other

Old and legendary place. It serves Thali with a fixed menu. This place is not for everyone. They serve Simple food- Rasam, Sambar, Sabji, roti, rice and Butter milk. For South Indians, this is a must place for their Rasam. Every food is very nice and tasty.
Raj Jyoti
Very delicious Chapati, Rice, Subji, Paapad, Pickle, curds, butter milk , sambar, rasam at unbelievable price for common man. Small set up which can accommodate max 10-12 persons at one time.

My father (before his death in 2021) use to take us for dinner everytime we wanted to have good food since 2012 from Vikhroli to sion. Just to have food here, i travel from Vikhroli to sion. Service is awesome and sambhar rice is top notch. My most favourite restaurant to have sambhar rice
The Lone Crusader
One of the oldest lunch homes in Sion. I distinctly remember being introduced to this gem of a place by a college friend in the early 90s. A meal cost around 30 bucks then. But the quality of the food has remained the same as it was - wholesome, homely, and with minimal oil. The meal consists of two chapattis, one dry veggie, one veggie with gravy (usually yummy), pickle or chutney, and unlimited rasam and sambar. The meal ends with a glass of buttermilk for digestion. Even today, the meal costs just 75 bucks. If you don't mind long queues and rubbing shoulders with strangers, for good food, this place is perfect for you. By the way, they are managed by the same conglomerate which look after the older Mani's near Ruia college and the more recent one at Chembur.

I love this kind of restaurant. Vegetarian south Indian restaurant, with limited number of dishes on menu. Mostly known for their veg thali (limited and non limited) at very reasonable price. Food is very much of Satvik type, less masala and oil but Tastey, you will only feel lighter after having food here. Ambience is simple, with limited tables so you have to share the table.
Jatin Bhhavsar
An awesome place for South Indian Thali. Very light on pocket and tummy as well. Be prepared to stand in queue for your turn. Very delicious food. Must try when in and around sion.

Went here for a quick meal. They serve south Indian cuisines. I tried dosa and uttapam. Both were decent. Service needs a bit lookout. The seating space is also an issue and sometimes you may have to wait before being seated. A bit of service improvement will do wonders.

South Indian food thali is served, quality is good, less space so few times we have to wait. Pure veg Tamil thali which includes two curries, Tamil papad, two vatis rice, two chapati, curd, butter milk, chutneys, Sambar, Rasam. Sweet (payasam) is available which is counted as extra( have to pay).<br/><br/>Like

Awesome food. Typical Palghat samayal. Still Maintained the quality and taste for so many years. Rasam was awesome. Piping hot food.. Must must visit, the place is small but worth the wait. They have take away too. Missed clicking a picture.. Only thing arrogant owner

Visited this place for a lunch had a good experience here. Food was of decent quality but I think service can be improved. When asked for chilled water i Recieved normal water.<br/><br/>Food : 4/5<br/>Staff : 3/5<br/>Service : 3/5<br/><br/>Over a rating 3/5<br/><br/>

Limited cash? Want unlimited food? Want value for money food? This is the place. Take the banana leaf thali for unlimited food. Make sure you go with your fellow foodie because they have initiated a new rule that you canā€™t order one normal thali and one banana leaf thali between two ppl both have to order the same thali , which is unjust for both the parties. But the food is pretty good for an unlimited point of view. Banana leaf thali cost 150ā‚¹ and normal one cost 75ā‚¹.Itā€™s a pure veg restaurant.

Today I happened to be in sion for some official meeting and I couldn't have missed my lunch at this very south indian restaurant serving you Tambrahm style lunch .well this lunch home is unique and unlike other hotels you probably would have to 'stand' ,yes no seating arrangement , the que would remind of you the line of a railway ticket counter and wait for your turn to hop on the delicious, basic and minimalistic food to be stuffed in your paunch .Barely 200sqft house the maximum seating capacity is only 15 along with a bill counter hosted by the owner mr radhaswamy who is running this landmark hotel from past 38 years . He said the menu ,the pic I took had not seen any changes except for the price .the taste of the food and the serving style still remains the same . Probably the one of very few hotel who will encash first before serving the food . Do visit this fine reasonable hotel to enjoy mouthwatering basic brahmin vegetarian meal.<br/><br/>P.S: Only vegetarian food here :) and no prior reservations entertained , minimum waiting time 20-30 mins .
Manish
The ever so famous Mani lunch home was pretty sad. Have been wanting to go here since long, but was really surprised by the bad food. Thali @ 75/ bucks serves 1 with 2 chapati, and 2 small vati of rice. The rasam is just tasteless tomato water and the sambhar tastes like god knows what. The sukha bhaji was a saviour though. <br/>I think The USP is the price point. There was a Q to enter the place. Just 15 sitting and the round gets over in less than 20 min I guess. <br/>But sad food for less money isnā€™t desirable. It shud be palatable at least.

Visited this place on a lazy Sunday afternoon . Hunger and some craving for authentic South Indian food brought me here. unlike other South Indian outlets this is an iconic place to have a proper South Indian style meal..A vintage meal and a must try

Must try South indian breakfast here.

Well to begin with please be noted that the Sion outlet only feeds us with lunch and dinner. No tiffin no coffee or any other snack.<br/><br/>They just serve pure meals for lunch and dinner and closes at 10 at night. There is not many tables and can serve meals for 20 people max at a time. It's a simple clean place .<br/><br/>It's located bang opposite to mc Donalds and next to Sion lunch home. For 75 RS they serve you authentic Tamil brahmin food. It comes with 2 phulkas , 1 dry subzi and 1 semi solid subzi and 2 small cups of rice with Sambhar , rasam, more and curd with papad. Must admit that this is an amazing place with pure food straight from heart and has got no masalas. Pure home cooked veg food for an optimum price and very hygeinic. I miss their Matunga branch which is now in Chembur.<br/><br/>In all a best place to have wonderful meals. Their sambhar and rasam is to die for.<br/><br/>Enjoy the food .<br/><br/>

Called for a couple of things, thinking that this place would be as good as the Matunga outlet. But sadly the place dint live up to the expectations.

Visited Mani's Lunch Home for a quick lunch. It's a small place in Sion. <br/>I had the Lunch thali. You have to pay at the entrance itself and collect your coupon. Then comes the food: Two bhajis, rotis, sambhar, rasam, papad and chaas. I additionally ask for sweet, which was kheer served in a small glass.<br/>Overall, it was a clean and tasty meal, and very reasonable too.

I love everything from here . <br/>Must try : lemon sevai <br/>Onion addai <br/>Meals are the best here<br/>Wada rasam <br/>And best filter coffee <br/>You must make a trip here just to have mind blowing simple yet most delicious South Indian food .
Chef Amrita Prabhudesai
The taste of basic south indian snacks is just the originality. It's a very small outlet since 1937. Original sambhar taste is introduced here and must try Madras pan Rs. 5 only. Healthy and hygiene food is served .

Since 1995, I have had many a meals here albeit during my struggling days when the limited meal was Rs. 11. Ā Once I was a regular for dinner here since I stayed close by at Everard Nagar, but now the visits have become infrequent with travel and having stayed abroad. Ā But believe me behind this humble outlet are the blessings of many who could eat here with their limited income, a decent meal which was healthy and yet very satisfying. Ā But despite increase in income, I still favour their simple, nutritious and delicious food even today. Ā I have packed food from here also. Ā Have taken my parents there and also my wife and son. Ā Keep the good work up

The moment I heard that a new restaurant called Maniā€™s Lunch Home a pure Tamilian Restaurant has been opened in Chembur, I decided to visit it immediately. I had always longed for a pure Tamilian Hotel where I could get authentic Tamilian food specially my favourite Rasam. Maniā€™s Lunch Home is a boon not only to Senior citizens but also to one and all. On visiting I found it to have a serene atmosphereĀ  and to create a homely feeling as the name of the Restaurant itself implies. It is located in a quiet place, not far from the Chembur station giving an easy access to it devoid of traffic noise and its jams.<br/>Maniā€™s Lunch Home was originally established by a connoisseur, Sri V.S. Mani Iyer,a staunchĀ  Keralite Tamil Brahmin Iyer, a native of Palakkad and which was initially started in 1937Ā  at Matunga near Ruia College. Having lost both his parents in early childhood Sri V.S.Mani was compelled to move out from Palakkad at an early age to earn his livelihood the hard way.<br/>Ā Travelling throughout India and serving at various different dignitaries as chef he finally came to Mumbai. With his vast experience and skills in culinary he introduced to Mumbaikars his exquisite South Indian delicious delicacies even by personally making home deliveries, finally to open the Maniā€™s Lunch Home at Matunga near Ruia College.<br/>After the demise of Sri V.S.Mani Iyer in 1978 his eldest son Sri K.S.Narayanswamy, who had come to Mumbai after his graduation to seek employment, had to shoulder the responsibilities of his large family and also take up the charge of the restaurant. However, by his hard labour, strenuous effort and dedication in business he succeeded in hosting the restaurant to the present position. Gradually Maniā€™s Lunch Home sprawled its branches to Sion its sister concern, close to Rly. Station and at Matunga Telang Rd. Opposite South Indian Bhajan Samaj, the latter which had to be closed due to unprecedented reasons. At Sion Maniā€™s Lunch Home too serves exclusive varieties of Palakkad Kerala type of lunch and dinner. Finally on 16th November 2016 Maniā€™s Lunch Home shifted to Chembur to make its third outlet here with astounding success. Now Maniā€™s Lunch Home at Sion and Chembur is taken charge of and managed by Sri K.S. Narayanaswamy ,the nephew of late Sri V.S. Mani Iyer, with assistance of SriĀ  Venkatesh and Sri Raman. It is with great pride they tell me that they hail from Palghat and belong to Palakkad IyerĀ  family.<br/>Accordingly, the food and the menu I am told comprises of pure Brahmanical Tamilnadu type. It seems the Masalas are of Tamilnadu and the cooks are from Palghat. So, needless to say, we get in this Lunch Home genuine, authentic Tamilian ā€œKhanaā€. Rasam is typical pure Tamil type unlike Rasam of other Restaurants where it is slightly fusioned to cater to the taste of Non-Tamilians.<br/>TheĀ  Restaurant opens at 7.oo a.m. for breakfast with South Indian adore Pongal, Medu Wada, Idli, Uppuma and varieties of Dosas and Uttappams. People flock here for enjoying early breakfast comprising of these South Indian vegetarian snacks. By 11 a.m. Lunch is served on plates and on fresh Banana leaves too. The Meals on platesĀ  comprise of Curry, Koottu, Sambar, Rasam, Curd, Butter Milk, Rice,Chappathy ,Papad and pickles, and costs only Rs. 80/-. Special Lunch served on Banana leaf has ā€˜Payasamā€™ sweet dish which costs 150/ .The evening snacks have additional varieties like Vegetable Bonda, Dalwada etc. Dinner starts by 7.00 p.m. and lasts till 10 p.m. Some of the specialities of this Lunch Home I would suggest are More Korombu, Avial , Pinapple Pachdi, Rasam which one should not miss.<br/>Ā The rates are reasonable and the main characteristics of this Lunch Home are the very decent, well-mannered and polite waiters. One can easily note their eagerness and willingness to serve the customer without any reservations. Even without telling they literally wait on diners to serve them heartily with as many second helpings as they want. The credit goes I should say to the owners or ManagersĀ  Mr. K.S.Narayanaswamy and his brother Mr. Venkateswaran for having given them excellent training. Majority of the waiters are with them over 20 years it seems.<br/>Ā The Lunch Home is spacious with comfortable seatings. It has a small open space or courtyard in front with chairs for people to wait or relax a little. Food lovers come from long distance too to have lunch here or carry parcels home.<br/>After a delicious meal, to round up, lovers of ā€˜Paanā€™ pop in their ready-made Paan Wida awaiting them at the counter for Rs. 5/- only.<br/>Maniā€™s Lunch Home is a must for anyone who loves and is an addict to pure Tamilian Brahmanical type of food and cannot survive without pure Rasam!!

Just wow !! You chase the food here, not the other way round. Very very small place located on the Sion Circle. Manis lunch home ( Sion ) is a very radical eating place. You stand in a queue for a coupon, save the coupon and later hand it over to the waiter. They have a " all dine at the same time" system, so you wait till the previous batch ( 20 people approx) are done with their lunch or dinner. The owner of this place is a Keralite Tamil Brahmin. It's a very simple place, it is not designed for ambience or comfort. Once you are seated, the waiters will bring the set menu, sambhar, dal, pickle, chapatis, 2 sabzis, curd, chaas, popadum, rice. The food is healthy, non-oily and nicely palatable. You are ask for extra stuff at a very nominal cost. The food satisfies the soul more than the body. Maximum bill will be Rs.100 per pax. It's not a place to chat and snapchat šŸ˜‚. A very humble South Indian experience. šŸ‘šŸ»

When I read the board Mani's Lunch Home, I entered in it. I've a thought in my mind that I'll get a delicious South Indian Thali here. I took a coupon for South Indian Thali. The food was ok but not that much delicious that you'll wish to taste it again & again.

Have been to Mani's Sion umpteen number of times. Frankly I am too meager a person to write a review about an Institution like Mani's. what constitutes good food is symbolized by the Thali Lunch at Mani's at an unbelievable price of Just Rs 65. <br/>Hot, tasty, perfect combination and palatable spices. Down to earth ambience and focus only on ensuring that customers are happy and satisfied. <br/>Great staff who make you feel at home.<br/><br/>Finally about the food - two vegetables - two soft chapatis. Rasam and Sambhar. South Indian papad, curd and butter milk, pickles make up the thali. I can't describe this great food in words- u need to experienced it.. plan for a minimum of 20 minutes waiting time at the Sion outlet. <br/>Mr Mani - many thanks for your yeoman service . god Bless you.

I visited the branch near chembur station. I must say it is so good. Tha food the service and the price as well. The hygiene is so good. My fav place if i ever crave tamil food. Cheers

Presume it's the same Mani's which is at Matunga or it's Sister Concern.Ā <br/>Everything is the same.Ā <br/>Not very big - hardly 18/20 sitting. NON AC<br/>Located at the busy Sion road . just below Hotel Askhay. This place is already a HIT.<br/>Nothing has changed. The taste is the same.<br/>Must try The UPMA here - guess the best in this part. Ghee glaze , Yum . Idle to have with the Chutney which they serve with it.<br/>Idli Wada - another favorite. Make sure of the timings when they prepare Fresh Idli and Wada - if you lucky it would be one of the best.<br/>Kela Bhajji is Good - must try if you like banana.<br/>Dosa - anytime the Ghee Sada.<br/>They have started the Sunday specials in form of Dosa Addai and Onion Addai.<br/>Thursday they have NEER dosa ( I have not tasted it )<br/>Lunch Hour - Must have the curd Rice or the Bisibelle.<br/>Overall a paradise for South Indian food and a must visit.<br/> <br/><br/>Ps. The FILTER COFFEE YES.
Djaunscte
Loved the idlis, dosa, sambhar, chutney and filter coffee at their new location in Chembur! And to top it off great pan too! Cannot say enough about the simplicity of this place which makes it so worthwhile and precious!
Muthuswamy Iyer
Manis as the name suggests is a proper south indian snacks and meals joint. The idli, sambar, wada , chutney and dosa have authentic chennai taste. The meals are a steal at around Rs 80-100. Paying Guests , bachelors and others staying away from home and nearby Sion should definitely frequent Ā this place for mainly tasty food, healthy food and food that is very easy on the stomach. Avial , Rasam and Sambar on Sunday are too good and will make your day.
Jyotigulatichakrabarti
They still do the best sambar according to me <br/>The oil in their Southindian cuisine is minimalistic.<br/>I love their idea of serving single idli , and dividing their dosa and Serving in two plates to avoid wastage .<br/>It's just great concept for small eaters.<br/>For the guys who love big breakfasts they sever Upma and Seera and poori bhaji too .<br/>Their thali is a hit . The southindian thali for 80 rs .<br/>Avial is a southindian mixed vegatable delicacy which is what they served on the day I went for their Sunday full meal .
Luxurious Mumbaikar

March 2015<br/><br/>A one off visit as I had to go to pick up some gift from a ex colleague in Sion station and as he ended up coming late, I quickly dart into Manis for a thali lunch. South Indian stake with chappatis, 2 subzis, dalm rasam, rice, curd. Good crowd, Ā a q had lined up on the road outside by 1300 pm so thank goodness I reached early. The one at Telang road is better I feel ( refer review posted) . Still good value heathy and tasty. Tamil Saapdu !!!!

Located opp to sion stn, sion circle. Around 16 people can sit there. Economical South Indian meal with less masala and oil which is easy to digest<br/>
Tamanna Ghanshani
I have been going to this place from the time i was born. Ā Its a very small restaurant serving south indian thali and only serves lunch and dinner.<br/><br/>Their specialty is Rasam, made by their age old cook.<br/><br/>Anyone who loves South India Thali , this place is a must must to visit.
Annette Sarita Iyer
This is a sister concern of the main Mani's Lunch Home at Matunga East which was started by Mr. V. S. Mani in 1937.<br/><br/>It's a Non AC, with basic seating though limited in number. Mainly frequented by single men and bachelors for a quick, home cooked style authentic meal.<br/><br/>Also serve lovely South Indian snacks apart from the lunch timings..<br/>Their Thalis have a loyal customer base, with both limited and unlimited versions depending on one's capacity.Ā <br/><br/>Mani's has been awarded several awards including The Foodie Awards 2014 for the 'Best Vegetarian Restaurant'<br/><br/>Ambience wise, since the seats are limited in number, sharinga table with others is a given.<br/><br/>Price wise nothing can beat this price, Service depends on the crowds..You may have to wait for a while especially during lunch hours..
Albinjose070192
I have a special feel for this place as the first meal I had after coming to Mumbai was from Mani's. So, in a way, Mani's has played a major role in creating an impression of Mumbai as a foodie paradise in my mind. And it didn't disappoint. I am one of the lucky few who got the chance to have the cheapest and most scrumptious meal you can get in the Sion Dadar Matunga belt.
