Kaboom, with its bright, fun decor, sticks out like a sore thumb amongst the stiff Ballard Estate. You could very well spot it from 2 kilometres away and wonder what exactly it is. And if that doesn't make Kaboom sound intriguing enough to you, read on.
Kaboom, originally a food truck is a blessing in disguise to Ballard Estate. The area, mostly with its office crowd, lacks good restaurants and that kind of is a downer. So evidently, Kaboom seems to be the popular option for office goers in and around the area.
It looks and feels like a fun, vibrant fast food joint. The food though, is anything but your average unappetising 'fast food'.
Take a look at the menu and you'll realise that its a rotating one - there's a new kind of cuisine on offer everyday.
‘Shanghai Funk,’ a brand-new Chinese menu on Mondays; ‘Pazzo Pomodoro,’ Italian on Tuesdays; ‘Fly High Ms. American Pie,’ American classics on Wednesdays; ‘Soi Tuk Tuk,’ Thai food on Thursdays; and finally, ‘Habba Habibi,’ popular Middle Eastern offerings, on Fridays. Lunch gets boring when you end up havinf the same order everyday but with a rotating menu, you're bound to return ever so often to experience a different cuisine everyday.
On the occasion of the Chinese New Year, I was invited to sample their newest 'Shanghai Funk' Menu.
Here's a rundown of what I tried and liked
They offer fresh cold pressed juices while keeping up with their farm-fresh concept, iced coffees, lemonade and lemon tea.
An ardent fan of Good Juicery's offerings, I went with the Sparkling Passion Fruit flavour. And as always, it was a relief after my troublesome 2 hour commute from work. The coffee is your regular affair with nothing to write home about, so stick to the juices.
My meal box consisted of sampling portions from their Chinese Menu,
Stir Fried Rice in Spicy Black Bean Sauce with Chicken.
Probably the best item you could order off Monday's menu. With its generous amounts of veggies and Chicken, it makes for a filling lunch. Its healthy enough to make sure you won't be dozing off at your desk by the time is 4pm. Fresh and crunchy veggies like Cabbage and Capsicum lend this dish a colorful appeal and Chicken, helps up its protein quotient. The fermented Black Bean sauces adds a rich, glossy texture to this fragrant recipe. Going wrong with this particular sauce may end up making your dish salty but, this version at Kaboom hits all the right flavor notes.
Broccoli Salad
A vibrant and fresh Mixed Veggie Salad added another dose of health to the meal box. Dressed with a light sesame soya dressing and served with fluffy, grilled mini parathas, its well balanced and gets 10/10 in the nutrition department. The parathas are initially baked and later pan fried with minimal oil for an extra crispy texture. A complete meal in itself, this light, refreshing salad is a feast to the eyes as well as to the palate.
Dimsums
Along with the salad and the rice, the box also had Dimsums. Made in-house from scratch, the Dimsums are light on the palate but packed with oodles of flavour. These light, savoury packets make a good early evening snack for when you have hunger pangs but want to indulge in something healthful.
Nutella Toasties
For dessert, we were served Nutella Toasties, which were bite sized pieces of warm toast slathered with Nutella. The spoonfuls of hazelnut chocolate make the toasties complete eye candy material. A little indulgence never hurt no body after all!
Since it caters to the office crowd, Kaboom is operational only on Weekdays, from 9:30am to 7pm.
But that shouldn't stop you. The food, the service and the experience that Kaboom, the area's first QSR, offers is worth it. The ingredients are locally sourced with even the Ketchup being made from scratch (There's also an open kitchen for you to sneak a peek). Their belief in sustainable farming and healthy living, while being easy on the pocket is outstanding. Come in for a quick salad refuel during lunch hours or call for a nutritious breakfast from right at your work desk. Kaboom surely is inviting, with its quirky Green walls and sewing machine tables.
