You'll feel like eating at your uncle's place. Same relative house feel and very homely food. The uncle and aunty are very kind, friendly.Feel to visit them daily. The hotel is inside a small Galli, 10 secs walk from road.

Good Kerala homely food in Mumbai. The ambience is very basic with limited seating. If looking for homely food, then proceed.

Wonderful place. The atmosphere is very homely. It was really nice to talk to the owner and family. Very cooperative. The food was exactly like home. It felt like I was back in kerala and having lunch with my grandparents. Beautiful experience.

The best homemade keralan food I have ever tasted. Been here 3 times already and I can't stop going there. Please don't go in here expecting a restaurant, don't even go there expecting a small restaurant with like atleast 2 tables.. it's basically a house where an uncle and an aunty live and they cook food for ppl for which you pay. Do not even expect a menu, it's jus 3 tables in their living room and their kitchen, well it's actually the kitchen. Uncle greets with a smile, shows u to a table and asks you, beef or chicken, and I normally jus smile and say, beef roast and appam. And then he asks you for fish, and my favorite part, he gets a dish with all the fish(marinated/ sometimes not) and asks you which and then they fry it for you.. actually don't worry about which fish you choose(I choose the bhangda), cos it will probably be the best fish fry you wud have eaten.. it is perfectly fried, the marinated masala crisp on the out, white meat inside, it's just perfect. Well I guess I've spelt out everything u get there.. You have the option of choosing parotta, but I choose appam so that I can eat more.. with this u also get rice with sambhar and kadi.. sometimes rasam too.. I'd give this place more than 5 stars if possible..

The place is situated on top of a old building. First impression won't feel as a restaurant. A maximum of 8 people can sit in there. The food served is traditional Kerala homely food. The food is good and the price is also ok.

Delicious food...friendly uncle n his family always ready to serve hot homely meals
Shoyi K John
The only restaurant in this locality serving authentic Kerala cuisine. Run by couple at their home.. traditional meals tasted like home cooked.. I prefer take away.. always called much in advance.. got it fresh off the stove

Kerala homely food and environment

Good kerala cuisine. Amazing homely food. Specially non veg items. Space limitation is there. No ambience. Hardly 6-7 seats. Food plus owners past stories is an awesome combination!☺

Good people. Serving food with love. God bless them

Good food. If they arrange for home delivery atleast in 2-3km radius is well and good. It will be more useful especially for Malayalis

If You're crazy about authentic Kerala cuisine then this is the place to go. A secret joint that serves mouthwatering authentic Kerala style delicacies the style of cooking is the traditional Alapuza style and everything served right from their basic rice plate meals to their high end chicken and sea food dishes are indeed mouthwatering and finger-licking good...!! Its always better to call and ask about the days dishes before going as it gives them enough time to prepare so that you wouldn't have to wait to dig in to their delicacies. The dining experience is worth a try as it would feel like visiting a friends home for lunch or dinner the food is served with a special warmth and care which adds to its taste. The place is just a shack and has no ambiance and is only and only famous for the taste of the food. I was really surprised to see a Burrp five star rating certificate hung on the wall !!!!! and sure they truly deserve one so ive also after eating there many a times give it a full 5 star rating...

Best homely food

This rating is for the food. It is a small place having seating for 8members serving south Indian food(veg non-veg). Man and his wife runs restaurant at their home. If you are wonder where it is? There is a small stair just behind the Tunga gao bus stop in sakivihar road. There it is. It does not have any sign board. So people can easily miss.

Very nice porotta and beef… Store location has changed. It is now inside a galli.. but if you ask any shopkeepers near the google location, they will direct you to the shop..

Kerala dishes at it’s best!!! If you are looking for a decent restaurant ambiance, this is not your place. An option could be parcel. Kerala Food, Excellent...

We ordered fish curry and fish fry.. my goodness for that cost, half the dabba of fish curry was filled with oil and a very small piece of fish along with oily red gravy.. 😷😷😷😷😷

This place cannot be termed as a hotel. Its an extended version of a house. Difficult to locate its just behind a bus stop one need to climb a staircase. Just like any home it has a curtain at the entrance. Very small place which can hardly seat 10 person at a time. This place doesn't have a menu need to ask whats available at a particular time. Place is usually frequented by nearby office people for homely mallu food at lunch time. Hygiene can be a cause of a concern here. So ordered a veg meal or thali and kerala porota and beef fry i has asked for beef fry but got a roast kind of thing. Nothing to boast of here just usual home like taste. As few reviews mentions that in the absence of menu the owner charges as per his wish i will agree to it i think he charges according to his whims

Zomato has fooled us with the rating..The place had zero ambience..not even a hotel..it's sort of a house..However, we believed the food would be good so did not care about the place. But the lunch thali & chicken was just not worth the cost. Waste of money..just spoilt our time

How good would it be, when you can drop in(rather climb up) to a cozy little joint and enjoy a good home cooked kerala meal, while you are far away from home. Add to it, the warmth of Murali Chettan and his family.<br/><br/>It's a small 8 or 10 seater joint with great appam, meen curry, fabulous side dishes for a kerala thali and fresh fish fry. The chicken curry, however I wouldn't vouch for, gravy of which, totally felt like sweet ulli(onion) curry.

Excellent homely food.. very good value for money..a must experience for the keralites in Mumbai<br/>.. fish curry and fish fry was awesome.. altogether great experience

If you want to have authentic home cooked mallu food you can definitely visit this place. The place is little difficult to find as it has a very small non noticeable board. We had to call up the owner to trace the place. There are 2-3 tables inside a house where they serve food. The food is good and reasonably priced.

favourite dining place of Gareth Dsouza & Giri Dharan <br/><br/>It is situated on first floor with lack of ambiance.<br/>You have limited choice in menu card <br/><br/>Owner/ staff of hotel is very polite <br/><br/>

worst experience, just for a rice and fish he charged us 250 per person. while it says 300 for 2. he don't have a menu. he will charge you as he feels like. even the food was not worth it. lets don't even talk ambiance.
Dheeraj Kotagiri
It's hardly a restaurant but a small table inside. Ambience was horrible. Food was average for non vegetarian. But if you are vegetarian then don't even bother to think about this place. Though zomato says 300 for 2, they charged us 260 per person even though everyone ordered different food. Their pricing policy seemed arbitrary.

Very nice and authentic kerala food. Had ordered Fish curry, chicken fry and appams for dinner (was enough for two), will definitely recommend the fish curry, not the chicken fry so much. Seriously good and hygienic food right out of a malayali kitchen. Would recommend ordering over visiting the place (only advantage with dining would be that you will be served 'karignari vellam'!!!). Its slightly difficult to get to this place (right behind the Tunga village bus stop, take the cramped steel stairs and u will find this place to ur right in the first floor; don't search for a name board, there ain't one).

Hello reader, <br/>If ure a kind of person for whom ambience is on top of the list when u visit any eatery, I'd suggest you immediately skip this review. Coz trust me my 4.5 rating doesn't reflect anything abt ambience but the simplicity and honesty in their food and more importantly the warm welcome that u will receive. So after contemplating a lot we finally decided to visit this place (which serves Kerala cuisine) and we are welcomed by the owner Mr. Murali who directed us to the seating area (only 2 tables and 8 chairs), he asked us wht we wanna have. We had no idea wht we want to eat so we asked him to serve us his specialty (cooked by his wife). And then these dishes were served<br/>Dal vada, @Appam, raw mango pickle, chicken curry(red), bangda fish Currey( coconut base), kadi rice, surmai fry, 2 different type of veggie(sorry don't remember the name) and ended with vanilla cake (thts a lot of good homemade food..😍😍). <br/>Other available options were<br/>Beef fry( will try it on my next visit), bandga fry, chicken fry, Pulau. Ate it to my heart's content, left the place with happy pocket, happy stomach and broad smile on my face...😀. <br/>P.S.- we were too engrossed in deciding where do we start from... Hence no photos THIS TIME. Def next time..,🍻

One of the best restaurant I had been in Mumbai although there is space constrained the food is delicious and with best service . Totally worth your money

The keralite in me woke up one fine day and i decided to order in authentic spicy kerala cuisine. We ordered parota,(sorta lacha parantha but way softer) chicken, fish fry and roast. The owner was super courteous as he later called and enquired if the food was good and if we had any feedback for him.In addition to that he gave us free parapu vada( dal based vada) and fish curry :) :)Food for 5 of us cost us mere 1100 bucks so this is awesome food at amazing price<br/><br/>Taste wise the food was good and everyone liked it.I recommend you ask the owner before placing the order. And do not expect any fancy stuff. This is value for money at its best.

This place is really small but the food served here fills ur stomach to your hearts content. I have been going here for the past 2 years on onam. I simply love the food and the family that's serves the food. This family does it all by themselves. There is so much passion in the way they serve the food to you explaining what each dish is. If you are a foodie....this is the place to be. Hats off to them.

Great place to get Kerala food. :) Definitely try this if you want some nadan curries and "Kuthari choru". It's a small place. There are only a few chairs to sit. But the hospitality is really good. If you are an "unniyappam" lover, then this is the place for you :) Eat ;)

When I'm too tired to cook and want home food comfort food I just make a call to Murli! <br/>The food is simple tasty and feels like your mom sent it for you coz they are not at all stingy with the quantity. I have not visited the restaurant I have called for food at home.

Without any doubt, this place is really awesome. All the reviews are so true. It's located right above tunga bus stop..u need to climb a small staircase to see small place..But it's truly worth it.. It's run by malayalis and u get a homely feeling.. definitely try rice meal & beef.. mouth watering!

Yes, everything you've read about Murali's Hotel is true! He really does cook and serve right out of this incredibly tiny space above a bus stop. And it's all authentic and he's warm and sweet and nice :-)<br/>But let's keep the romanticism aside and purely talk about the food. <br/>Our order:<br/>Beef fry & Kerala Paratha: <br/>This should be his signature dish :-) it's by far at par with the best. The spices merge into the flavour of the beef creating an awesome every-bite-experience! And the Paratha completes it. <br/><br/>Fish fry & Fish curry: <br/>Nice :-) a bit fishy for my palette but quite nice. <br/><br/>Chicken curry & Appam:<br/>While the appams were nice and soft, the chicken curry didn't have anything too great to offer. It's was your regular every day chicken curry. <br/><br/>Food Quality: 3.5/5 (the beef gets a 4.5!)<br/>Food quantity: 3.5/5<br/>ValueForMoney: 4/5<br/>Packaging: 4.5/5<br/>

Gotta say this. The food is "adipoli". The real taste and tinge of kerala. Payasam was amazing. The place is run by a couple, so the place is small. But "dont judge a book by its cover" the food is great.. Just try it out.

The hotel organises a Vishu feast (Malayali New Year) every April 14th. <br/>This is undoubtedly the place to go to if you crave homecooked Malayali food. The meals are delicious and the fish is exquisite.

This place is obscure - to the point that either you have to keep asking people for the place, or you need to go with someone who has been here. <br/>It's an extremely small place (it's just the guy's dining room) - it can accommodate only upto 6-8 people at once. It's a unique experience - probably not the most attractive or hygienic place, but definitely a delicious and homely place. The uncle who serves is quite hospitable - he serves you food like a mother does - often deciding what you should or shouldnt eat - and I loved the effort. Her wife (the cook) wouldn't mind cooking something special for you (we asked for chapati, she made it for us) if you request. <br/>Coming to the food, they served the 3 of us a veg thali along with the parantha (which was decent) - along with it we called a chicken curry, a meat fry (a kind which is rare to find in Maharashtra , and a standard for Kerala diet) and a fish fry - in true Malyali style. A bit overdone in coconut oil, all of them were quite brilliant - the sheer blend of spices made them all stand out. The quantities served were huge, and the bill in the end is so light - you might wonder how do these guys make an earning out of it. <br/>It's a unique place, and something you should give a try, if food takes a higher precedence for you than all other issues. <br/>

The ambience is 0 on 5 but the food makes it worth.<br/>Homely cooked food with homely service...<br/>Kerala food at its best.. I would suggest takeout would be a good option, but if you are not looking for ambience and just good food then this is best place when you are bored of having pizza and pastas for lunch

I first visited this place after reading reviews in Zomato, my expectations were quite high and guess what....They met my expectations by far ! A simple place where Murali chettan's family cooks the food. Since my first visit in Jan 2016, I have visited this place at least 2O times... My pick would be - in breakfast - puttu and kadala curry. Lunch - Kerala meals with fish fry and curry... Ps: Don't go for ambience.. Pls visit this place only if you want to have some good home made Kerala food

Without any second thought, This place gave me the best Dining experience during my whole food journey in Mumbai. I have tried a variety of places with different cuisines and different levels from streets to high end ones and no one even comes close to the amount of satisfaction this place gives you. <br/><br/>Beauty lies in simplicity and Murali and his family knows this way good. It is a small place with couple of tables in his house which may not look very tidy but indeed the hospitality and love the people will show you is beyond anything. The hanging burrp certificate on the wall certifying this tiny den as a Heaven of Kerelan Food proves completely legit when you will have the first bite of lip smacking food they serve. It is very simple home style Kerelan food which has some magic in it that you can't even say a word while eating to cherish the delectable taste and textures with spiciness beautifully infused in everything they make. <br/><br/>We tried their rice thali which costs Rs 60 and you can have as much of anything you like. They eat the same thing they serve you with and you can feel the absence of overly taste enhancing fats and stuff which are highly evident in restaurants throughout. Brown rice taste awesome with whatever they serve..curry or dal or sabzi, everything was perfect and had very different flavors and taste. Non veg costs Rs 100 per plate whether it is beef, fish or chicken. We tried all three and they all tasted epic as well. Chicken was a beauty in itself, tender with a thin and highly tongue pleasing spicy gravy. Beef masala was dry and had superb masala containing coconut giving it a very different texture altogether. Soft meat pieces in this masala made it a real awesome treat. Fish was fried and had appreciable marination giving it a real nice taste.<br/><br/>Overall there was not even a single complaint in food what so ever and we four people all finished every single gram of food present on our plates. This place is not to be missed if you value taste and quality of preparations with simplicity in authenticity of cuisine. Highly recommended without any second thought and it is The best meal i have ever had in Mumbai.<br/><br/>My Rating:<br/>1. Food: 4.75/5<br/>2. Service: 4.75/5<br/>3. Value of Money: 4.5/5

It’s now been two and a half years that I have been taking new people to Murali’s. And to look back on how I found this place – through a desperate attempt to locate “Beef Fry” in Powai! I had stumbled on a Burrp page which had a small, ecstatic review and Murali chettan’s number, and there was no looking back!<br/><br/>I have had around 10 meals over here and every single time I have left as a euphoric soul with an overloaded stomach. Without exception. The place is a marvel in itself – you reach the Thunga village bus stop near Sakinaka, and right behind the bus stop is a narrow steel staircase, which will lead you to Murali’s (home) or in other words, into the divinity of home-made Kerala food. You enter into a very old room that can seat about eight, replete with a TV, old calendars, flower pots, framed Sai Babas and Lord Aiyappas and a framed Burrp certificate from 2009 for being the “Haven of Kerala cuisine”. The place is an experience, and only made better by Murali chettan’s exemplary attitude and his wife’s divine cooking. The menu changes by the day and every time you go, you have different items in the veg thali, just like you’d have at home. And they eat the same food.<br/><br/>So coming to the food, I have been lucky to try a lot of things here, and unluckily, I do not know their names. I have had bitters, soyabean, mixed vegetable, thoran, sambhar, sour curd with red rice and all of them have been beautiful and soothing on the pallet. Of course, there are some sides that I order every time, without fail and they are all superb. The red fish curry is fiery and tangy, and the fried fish steaks are huge and fresh. And in my most recent visit I got to have Kadala Curry, which was awesome. But the cake goes to the three items that are a pride of any Mallu – the Chicken Nadan Curry, the Beef Fry and the Fish Yellow Curry. The yellow curry is soothing and wholesome, the Chicken Curry is spicy and immeasurably tasty and the Beef Frey… well… you have to have it to believe it. It is just divine and is capable of inducing daydreams while you chew through the concoction of spices and the slightly gamey meat. And all this with freshly made Appams or Parottas makes it that much better. The last time I was there, I also had the chance to have Naiappams, deep fried sweetmeats which were excellent as usual.<br/><br/>After you are done and washed, all you need is to ask Murali chettan what the bill was, and believe me, it will never be a surprise. You will not even ask for the division and you will pay happily for the immense meal that you just devoured. A place that is a must visit in Mumbai, a place that is a miracle to have happened to me. A foodie’s heaven.. it is a pity that he will never see the reviews on Zomato... flock the place guys!

I have been to Kerela recently for a friend's wedding and ate maybe like 10 meals a day! I am sucker for South Indian food. <br/>And this is the place to be for Mallu food. Amazing AMAZING food. The servings are huge. It's an all in one meal. Vegetables. Sambhar. Chicken. Curry. All of it together and in any quantity that you would love.<br/>I love the ambience too. A cozy family earning their living by cooking for people. It's warm and fuzzy. This is the place I go to when I am homesick or generally sick or am craving something absolutely lip smacking or am crazy hungry. This is my go to place.<br/>The man who runs it - Murali is nice to talk to and will tend to all your food needs. It's home away from home.<br/>Must try!
Jacob
Bad experience with food, service, ambience !<br/>If ur a hardcore mallu foodie too will get regret. The only thing is its very cheap <br/>Sorry guys, 👎👎👎

This is most possible my 100th Zomato review. And due to this wonderful site I have discovered many places in all the different cities I have lived. The below experience was written by me for a blog. I will just copy paste it as it best reflects the essence of this place with some footnote(s). <br/><br/> In search of some good Keralean food, went searching for a place called Murali hotel in Tungha Village near Powai. Hard to find at first, was skeptical whether to enter the place due to its size and view from outside. On top of a cigarette shop, a small front with a thatched roof. Moreover being in stark business formals on a Wednesday after office, the dress code was far being from appropriate. After 5 mins of contemplating and a flight of dark steel steps, entered the place. It was someone's home. The gentleman along with his wife and daughter was watching the Malayali version of KBC. Asked him if some food was available to make sure it was the place. The most prized possession in the entire house was the television set and a framed certificate of Burpp from 2009. The gentleman quickly said yes and shifted a bit and made place for me to sit.<br/><br/>Not much to tell after that. 280 bucks,an hour later and lots of Malayali KBC I had one of the best dinners of my life with no place left even for a glass of water. The gentleman on inquiring how i reached his place , mentioned some years back someone couriered him that certificate (burpp) and he decided to frame it and he had no idea how someone got to know of his place. He also told that his wife does all the cooking as much as she can and on asking for a cup of tea at last offered me black tea as they don't like to drink with milk.<br/>Wished me good night and asked me to come again.<br/><br/>The certificate read 2 statements.<br/><br/>"A humble place with a large heart for serving food."<br/><br/>"Homely haven for serving keralean food."<br/><br/>Footnote:<br/><br/>Location:- the place is on top a cigarette shop behind a bus stop. There is a big wine shop very nearby. Look at the top and you can see the fading name "Murali Hotel". <br/><br/>Dishes tried: Dry Beef Curry (just heavenly with porota, no ratings needed), chicken curry (5/5, nothing more expected), halwa (5/5) and a cup of black tea..<br/><br/>Did not take any photos as the setting was not appropriate to click pics. <br/><br/>Go there for good food and good food only. Nothing else.

Fantastic authentic kerala taste and full volume.. great hospitality in a small space. Superb attitude. And moderate for office goers.

Boss, mallu food doesn't get any better than Murali's. If you're looking for proper, literally home-cooked stuff that would bring memories of Amma's cooking borne on a 90's Mohanlal film song, head to Murali chettan's! Its a bit tricky to find, actually really tricky, but when you do, it'll be like finding El Dorado, trust me!<br/><br/>Murali's mostly going to talk to you about the rising vegetable prices, like any average house owner and tell you how much he loves cooking, and how he always cooks from the heart. <br/><br/>Its a breath of fresh air, this place. <br/><br/>Try the fish fry and the beef curry. If you're a hygiene freak, you maaaay not adore this place as much as @Ikooky does, but otherwise you'll be most happy.
Vivek Kaimal
I would give this one a 6/5 if I could. You have to climb up dingy stairs and sit on dirty benches to have pure Kerala style food served with lots of love and affection.<br/><br/>Murali chettan who runs this place engages you in casual conversation as you wait around for your food and once you have food if the rush is less you can sit around and chat about things and no one will stop you. It is like going home but not really. Right.<br/><br/>So we went there for Onam and had the traditional Onam Sadya from here. The food was brilliant and the service was beyond brilliant. I have heard of the non-Onam non-veg fare and have been wanting to try for a long time. Soon.<br/><br/>Go here if you are a Kerala food enthusiast. There is only seating for around 12 people so you may have to wait around a bit. Also the place is located on the first floor (right behind the bus stop), there is only a faded board and is hard to spot so be sure to ask around if you can't find it!
