Review Maharsh -ethiopian Cafe And Bites - Mumbai

Austin Fernandes
Been a fan of Ethiopian food for a while, so was excited to visit the first Ethiopian restaurant in Mumbai. The food was excellent. Tried most of the main dishes and everything we had was delicious and full of flavour. Loved the teqel gomen the best among all the vegetables. The injera was soft, fluffy and complimented the food really well. The sharing plates come in various options with choice in the number of dishes and with optional popcorn and coffee. The staff here was very attentive and friendly. Thanks to the chef who spent time talking to us about Ethiopian food and explaining the dishes. A great meal and will definitely be back soon.

Great place, delicious food, a unique experience. Felt like I was dining in Ethiopia. Pure veg restaurant. The chef is very interactive and proactive. Coming back for sure. Good job team Maharsh.

Surprisingly good Ethiopian vegetarian food. Flavors were close enough to the authentic cuisine. Enjoyed everything we ate.

Very interesting meal. Had the Bayenetu ( Ethiopian Thalia). Teaches you about communal sharing and eating. Best eaten with hands. Server was well versed with the definitions and preparations. Small cozy tastefully decorated. No Ethiopian desserts, though. Valet parking available, at owners rush though.

What a lovely little restaurant! Delicious Ethiopian food served in the traditional way on an injeera. The food comes super fast after you place the order and the servers are so friendly. And most the time, there is Ethiopian music playing on the tv, transporting you from the streets of Mumbai to Addis Ababa. Our all time favourite local eatery.

Had a couple of Ethiopian starters and coffee. The restaurant looks small from the outside but has 7-8 tables inside. It's pure veg and has Jain options hence more food options for vegetarians. Also had Ethiopian coffee here, which was amazing. Snacking came to 500 per person, the lunch costs nearly 700per head. The food experience is different compared to the regular fare, as for lunch plate they serve a single large "thali" for 2-4 (with more qty) wit multiple dishes.

The one and only place serving Ethiopian cuisine... It's a vegetarian place and small joint not a fancy restaurant. The food tasted nice and ambience is Ethiopian. The cuisine is somewhat similar to Indian and hence should find lovers in people who don't like to deviate from typical tastes. Must have would be Shiro Wot. Ethiopian food is typically served in a single big plate, lined with a big roti like Injera (made of tef flour) topped with vegetables of your choice. . Overall, a new cuisine introduced to Mumbai so go and check it out...

New concept. Food is real good and fresh. It has hint of gujju food. Expensive though. However could be tried once. Food 4.5 on 5 Price 2.5 on 05 Ambiance 3 on 05 Service 04 on 05 Value of money 3 on 5

Veggie Ethiopian food!!!! So glad this exists in Mumbai. It's the only one of its kind, so support it. Also, the food is yummy!!! And it is authentic. Try the fir fir, have the wats, and ask for the Ambo, straight from Ehtiopia. They have Jain options also. All delicious.

Genuine Ethiopian food. Very delicious and perfect Ethiopian taste. The menu is very well planned and it has most of the vegetarian dishes that I've had in Ethiopia. Ambience is elegant, hard work has been put to give the feel of being in Ethiopia. The showstopper items are injera and the vegetables and lentils served with it. The dishes are served in Ethiopian baskets and that gives it an authentic feel. Neat, clean, well lit, comfortable, served by happy waiters. The owners supervise personally, they take maximum efforts to explain the guests about this vibrant country, the importance of the dishes served, how they are prepared and the ingredients used. The coffee ( original Ethiopian Coffee) and popcorn served after food is very commendable. All in all, everyone should visit the place and enjoy the Ethiopian dishes. Total value for money. The interest that I saw in people coming there; I think the owners will have to look for a bigger place very soon.

We did inform Zomato long ago , if they don’t update it is not our fault

Spent almost an hour looking for the restaurant and later found out that it’s shut

The food was horrible to say the least. They served us gujarati food in the name of Ethiopian food.

Having seen some of the negative reviews of this place I was a bit apprehensive and ordered a soup when I got there - just in case I didn't like the food... I shouldn't have. The thali was awesome. My wife and I both loved it. The server was great - he had advised us against ordering an extra starter as he said we might not be able to have it after the thali. And he was right! We couldn't even finish the thali between the two of us. Every dish in the thali tasted different and the flavours were something new for us. The pricing is right. Can't wait to return to the only Ethiopian cuisine place in town.

Great food!! Had been craving Ethiopian cuisine and this was really awesome and met all expectations:)

With my family having roots in Djibouti, there was huge expectation from this cafe. And it did not disappoint at all. Having had the authentic food earlier, we did have some comparison to go by.

We ordered the Fir Fir which was super and flavorful. We then ordered the platter for 4 which was a good mix of veges and lentils - the Alicha Missir Wot and Shiro Wot were our favourites. The staff was very accommodating with adjusting Jain food within this for my grandmom for whom even one plate of anything would be a large qty. The injera (star of the dish) was fresh and soft. The platter was followed by super Ethiopian coffee and popcorn.
Definitely visiting again!

Had been hearing about this place for a while and when I finally visited, it was worth the wait! We started with the sauteed injera, which was like bread upma, but with injera. The bread itself is very flavorful so the dish turned out to be delicious. For the main course, we had platter for 2, which made me wish that we shouldn't have ordered the starter! The quantity is huge and it is difficult to finish everything on it, especially when the combination also includes bread basket, Turkish coffee, and brownies!

The lentils were really good as were the other dishes. I couldn't understand why they had given pita, garlic bread and other things along with injera, and we couldn't finish any of it. On top of that, we were also given a sampler of their new dish, some North Indian dish.
All of this was followed by some good coffee and nice brownies. The only problem (not at all a huge one) was that when the server first opened the platter, I saw a big fat working squirming around in the salad. Of course they replaced the dish in a blink and I didn't ended up getting that extra protein, but that just shows that they use vegetables without pesticides!

All in all, had a good experience as the manager didn't even throw us out although we had been there for good 2+ hours. If you want to try close-to-authentic Ethiopian food, then this is your stop!

Though was spectical how the food would be as had gone with two kids to try a new cuisine , we thoroughly enjoyed the food especially foul with garlic bread , tomato n basil soup and the Ethiopian thali which was the best . The quantity of food is also good enough....we ordered the thali for 4 people but cud not finish it . Overall a great experience will surely visit again.

I had eaten euthopian food in america and hence have been craving it. Through word of mouth heard about this place and landed here to end my craving. Wasn’t disappointed at all must eat. Up to the mark 👍

Went for a light meal in the evening with frnds..after hearing a lot about this place. HUGE disappointment. The fir fir recommended..was very average..just a new twist to handvo. The Ethiopian tea was okay. The only good part was the nice buttery popcorn that came with the tea. The service was very quick and the staff was curteous.

Horrible food.....and Indian food just tagged Ethiopian......totally waste of money..over priced........

Quite a unique experience to immerse yourself in another culture for a day! The owner, Charmie, is really passionate about the entire culture, and not only their food, and was kind enough to share stories of her childhood of being brought up in Djibouti (a neighbour of Ethiopia). With an array of lentils, cabbage, beetroot and bread: all doused with sufficient spice to keep your taste buds tingling, this is truly a colourful delight for all the senses! This place is above budget at ~INR2k for 2 people (we took the INR1.55k platter and a chocolate brownie with ice-cream dessert) because the ingredients are regularly flown in by friends and family from Ethiopia. Interestingly, Christians constitute 60-70% of the population and observe a strict vegetarian diet (even vegan) during the 40-day period of Lent, which is why the enterprising Gujarati community has a wide array of vegetarian dishes to choose from! Definitely recommend a one-time visit for the sheer colours, spice and variety!

Food recommended:
Fir for, kay missir wot, chocolate brownie with ice-cream

Drinks recommended:
Ethiopian coffee, peach and cranberry non-alcoholic beer

Ambience/décor: 10/10
Service: 9/10
Quality of food/drinks: 9/10
VFM: 9/10

The owner of Maharsh called my mother after she wrote a review not appreciating the food, the owner did not talk with respect and went on to humiliate my mother. The owner couldn't handle the negative feedback considering we are regular customers since the last six months. The owner's uncooperative behavior caused her angst typically leading her to
shout over the phone, showing no professional behavior. They shouldn't give a feedback card if the owner can't handle a critic.

Worst restaurant , by name of ethopian serving Gujrati food n 3 times charges n very worst service n owner is very rude n while give feed about complaints she fights with costomer so our experience is very bad by paying so much high price of worst food pls ppl I won’t recommended to visit this kind of worst restaurant normally we go to enjoy good food but spoiled our Sunday lunch n mental harresment 😡🤬🤬

Its a one of a kind Ethiopian restraurant in Mumbai , and honestly , the food is alot like indian home food , we had the Bayenetu small which is like a “thali” where the items come on the injera bread along with a bread basket , they also serve tea or coffe along with some popcorn afterwards , I am really glad that mumbai is finally opening up to some new cuisuines ! And overall , I really enjoyed the food , however , the injera bread is a little sour , so if you have an issue with that , you might not like the food as much . All in all , its worth giving it shot and trying something new ! Jashen Thakur

Small, cozy little place on Juhu that differentiates itself by the unique cuisine it has to offer! Fact that they served such an offbeat cuisine really piqued my interest to check this place out & I was not disappointed! ⁣Nice little cafe decorated with colorful, traditional Ethiopian crafts & playing their traditional music. Their menu has quite a range of traditional Ethiopian dishes - all vegetarian!

We started with the Fir Fir on the suggestion of our server. Fir Fir is basically shredded Ethiopian sourdough flatbreads called 'Injera' (quite similar to our very own dosa) mixed with butter, chillies, onions & traditional Ethiopian spice mix called 'Berbere'. A very unconventional dish but turned out to be a pleasant & mouthwatering surprise!

Next we tried the Kay Missir Wot. This was a dal (lentils) preparation in spicy red masala that came with a basket of assorted breads (Injera, pita & garlic bread) and some salad & stuffed chilli. It was a hearty meal in itself with some very interesting flavor profile. I think what stood out in both the dishes was the beautiful balance of flavors achieved by the blend of spices & fresh produce.

We had also ordered a couple of the non alcoholic beers on the menu. The ginger beer was delicious!

All in all it turned out to be a good experience - the service was quick, food very good & different. Would love to come back & try their other dishes!
Today I went to this cafe for lunch with my friends. Food is really good but portions are very very small!! And after we finished our meal I noticed that the spoon and fork container on the table where they put cutlery was full of fungus from outside as well as inside!! When we brought it to their notice instead of being apologetic and concerned they were arguing!! It is highly unhygienic even if food was really good!!

Our family decided to explore a new cuisine & Maharsh caught our eye. The concept is new and we had not heard of any other Ethiopian cafe, atleast in Juhu. It's a cosy place with limited basic seating.

It is uniquely different and the staff and the owner were kind enough to guide us and recommend dishes.

For starters, we ordered for the Lentil Sambusa which we could relate to samosas but the Ethiopian version & Vol-au-vent Harico is like baked beans spread on tiny round hollow puff pastries.

For mains, we ordered for the Ethiopian Bayentu Large for 6 people. The most unique part about the this thali was Injera (on which everything was spread and served) it's their version of bread/roti (Ethiopian flat bread) with which the lentils and vegetables are to be eaten with.
On top of trying Ethiopian cuisine for the 1st time, we had strawberry beer and the German lager which were non alcoholic, but nonetheless worth a try.
For dessert we had the Orange Chocolate mousse which was very rich.
They also serve Ethiopian coffee and popcorn at the end of the dinner.
Good experience overall! Must visit once for everyone who like exploring new places and cuisines!

Super soft injera bread and full yum flavourful lentils and veggies - the ‘thali’ for two is highly recommended. The decor is tasteful, the service quick and the cuisine a welcome one to Mumbai.

Maharsh is a small cozy place located on Juhu Tara Road serving Ethiopian cuisine and that too vegetarian😳. I repeat yes vegetarian and I truly loved every bit of all the dishes. I had been on a friday for lunch.
We ordered a starter named Fir Fir (euthopian bread based) and 4 sisters soup (vegetable soup). Later we ordered euthopian thali for 2 ppl wherein we had to choose 6 vegetables from the menu. So we opted for mushroom tibbs, tofu tibbs, shiro(chickpea sauce based), falaoia(dont remember exact name), spinach based veggie and cabbage based veggie. This thali comes with injera bread, veggies as per your choice, salad, feta cheese, mustard chutney and stuffed green chillies.
Except for mushroom and tofu tibbs, all the food items were mind blowing. Injera bread was the highlight as it was unlike the conventional bread and it was so fluffy, light on stomach and sour in taste. Later we were served euthopian black coffee with popcorn which was again excellent. The coffee was unique and quite mild.
Overall
Food 5/5
Ambience 3.5/5
Service 4/5
Value for money 4/5
Also the quantity of food was pretty good and I am definitely coming to this place again👍
Went to Maharsh for dinner on Sunday. The staff was friendly and helped explain the different elements of the Ethiopian meal. We ordered for a traditional Ethiopian thali that came with a fermented flat bread Injeras along with various accompaniments in the form of lentil and vegetable preparations. The food was very tasty, the flavours very new and balanced.
Only it was more expensive than its earlier costing which would justify the food better. The option of one person sharing the thali was also not there. Had it been there, we would have been able to try more side dishes - which we were very keen to. But as it was just the two of us we didn't want to miss out on the authentic Ethiopian meal experience.
Definitely worth a visit but a bit heavy on the pocket

Great Decor and Ambience..

This place is run by a hard-working girl named Charmi. She has a thorough knowledge of the Ethiopian food as she has spent a lot of time there.. Her experience is visible in the presentation of food and she has authentic Ethiopian spices to bring out flavours in the dishes...

Food quality, standard and taste excellent.
Excellent service and staff.

We had the Ethiopian veg thali , Sombussa and Ambo all of it five Stars..

Pls try this place.. it's worth every penny... And go there really hungry.. 😁

A delightful little place which I hope will grow in size in time to come. The food experience is awesome! Have been craving good Ethiopian food in India ever since I first tasted it in The USA. Very authentic tastes! Superb quality. Fine staff and very friendly. Will surely be going back often even though it's the other end of the city for us. That should speak volumes for it. Wish them all the best.

After having tasted Ethiopian cuisine before, wanted to visit Maharash as this was the first time an Ethiopian outlet had opened in Mumbai. It was a small place with a very comforting ambiance.

We ordered the ginger beer and get an beer which were decent. For mains we ordered fir-fir which was good to taste with an appropriate blend of seasonings. Apart from that we also ordered Diblik which was a healthy combination of zucchini, green peas, carrot along with potatoes. They served it with a basket of ingera, garlic bread and pita bread. On the basis of the owners recommendation, we tried the Shiro Wot which was good to taste. However, we were not served the basket of add-ons that we were served with Diblik which was disappointing. In addition, we wanted to try out Ethiopian tea but we were told that it would take a long time to make it (which was surprising).

Though the food was good, the pricing was it quite steep for the quantity that was there for the offering. Also, we found the service not up to the mark.

Would recommend the place in case you want to try out a different yet healthy cuisine and willing to pay that extra for the food it offers in terms of quantity. You can visit this place with your friends, family and partners.

Loved the food. It is a small cafe, but do not go with the look and feel. The food is really nice and the staff is also very nice. Must visit.

This is very small cafe like place that serves Ethiopian food. When I first heard of it, I was very exited, as I have been looking for a place that served Ethiopian food in Bombay. The first time I had Ethopian food was in the US, and I loved it. The concept of sharing food and it being much like Indian (similarly being bread & Sabzi), and yet being so different, intrigued me. For appetisers we opted for the Fir-Fir, which is an Ethopian bread (not injera) with onion & garlic. The taste and the presentation was excellent. Loved it and must have. The portion size was quite sizeable. I believe the Sambusa would also be good. For the mains we called for veg messob (thali) for 6 portions. For the veg we called for the Yemser Wot (Thick yellow dal)- was okay, tofu tibbs-excellent, shiro wot-excellent, mushroom tibs-excellent, Kay missir wit-was okay and fasolia-excellent. The portions were too large for just a 2 people. I would recommend opting for the 4 veg and avoid the okay dishes. We didn’t call for desserts as we were stuffed. But they did give us Ethopian coffee with popcorn. The coffee was brilliant and it’s combination with the popcorn worked well. Overall it’s a nice place, surely worth a visit. I would surely visit again whenever I crave Ethopian food.

Good, small and cozy place also gives an access to previously unheard of cuisine
Good food overall the pricing though is horrible very very expensive as against what is being given for a small quasi cafe you cannot charge a bomb

With that out of the way food is good mostly serving broths and pulse based dishes it has a lot going on

Recommend a visit

Tiny place in juhu with a novel cuisine offering. The food was ok. It was expensive for vegetarian affair.. The thali for 6 had insufficient bread and food overall.

Ethiopian is one of my favourite cuisines & I had only been able to have Ethiopian food in the US till now. Glad to see a place in Mumbai that is finally serving the cuisine! These guys have managed to get the injeras really right! The lentils, shiro, mushrooms etc are quite nice and come pretty close to what the authentic stuff tastes like! Ethiopian food is similar to Indian food in many ways & I’m sure a lot of us desis would enjoy it! Give it a try! Quite certain, you’d like it!

What a lovely find!

This is a small place with eight tables, but Maharsh was near empty when we walked in, and through the course of the two hours we were there. Which puzzles me, because I assumed it'd be crowded on a public holiday.

The food is homely, yet somewhat unfamiliar, because the spices/heat in Ethiopian food are very different from the 'heat' in Indian food. I never understood why Ethiopian food wasn't as hyped as it deserves to be. Regardless, I'm glad *someone* has taken the step to open an Ethiopian joint here in Bombay.

We had the azifa salad, lentil sambusa, the messob meal with eight accompaniments (splendid), and a fava bean dish called foul, which was my favourite. I just wish the foul wasn't served with garlic bread, and that the messob meal didn't have clearly un-Ethiopian ingredients like cherry tomatoes and iceberg lettuce sitting bang in the middle.

Regardless of the few hiccups (including the coffee which was first served at room temperature, and had to be heated later on request), I'm glad a place like this exists. We Indians in general have very cloistered palates, and an obsession with white people food. Cuisines from the African and South American subcontinents deserve their place in the sun. Only then will we learn what constitutes a "genuine" or "lazy" ode to said cuisines.

Go here with a group, and enjoy your meal at a relaxed pace.

Nice Little Cafe, clean and fresh. The only place I know of in Mumbai - Pune I know of where you can find authentic Injira .... Must Visit for foodies and Injira fans alike.
The place has nice feel to it with walls, furniture & music giving a feel of African country.

This is a terrible place. I didn't feel like it represented the cuisine very well. I was very disappointed. Also, this place is vegetarian. Ng

Though I have little knowledge about the ethiopian cuisine, I was super excited to visit this place and I was definitely not disappointed. They have make perfect use of a small space. The walls display various paintings of their culture and women and the TV has some African music videos playing, all this literally transforms you to a different country. We chose the vegetable platter with an option for 8 veggies and it costed us a thousand bucks! The meal was server in a big platter covered with a conical hat. We loved the tofu, potato and lentil based veggies! You are supposed to eat these with the bread which tastes like the western version of Bhaakri.

After not getting a booking for three Sundays in a row, I finally managed to get a booking today and believe me the wait was completely worth it. If you ever want to try Ethopian food in Mumbai, without doubt, Maharsh is the place to visit. With its authentic flavours from Ethopia and a wonderful ambience, Maharsh is definitely a treat. This is a small place with seating for probably just 30 people; so be sure to book in advance. that being said, running a business is a two prong approach; good food and competitive pricing. The folks at Maharsh have completely nailed the first one but need to work on the steep pricing of their food. Nevertheless, I'll definitely come back again.

Excellent authentic Ethiopian cuisine is served at this place. Had been here with family and spent almost 2 hours relishing the food. Special thanks to chef Yogesh who explained us the spices and ingredients that are used in Ethiopian cuisine. Will surely visit again.

Yes guys this is Ethiopian and different and we had so many expectations !
Good points first - the coffee is really nice

Bad - service - needs major improvement + food - very average - for somebody who has had Ethiopian food authenticity is next to none - if someone wants to have dosa + chhole and paneer and of course store bought pita and re heated frozen samosa - please go ahead . Otherwise spare yourself the horror .

Also I’m a vegetarian so it’s not like vegetarian food disappointed me .

Very good food and friendly staff must visit for people who
Like ethopian food ,the natural soda water is sth different and the coffee served with popcorn replaces the dessert .

Absolutely delicious experience!! For those of you who are familiar with traditional Ethiopian cuisine , may find the dishes a little more Indian in taste but for first timers , it’s a delightful surprise! I highly recommend you giving this cute little cafe a try and encourage this wonderfully vibrant cuisine a chance to seduce your taste buds ! You won’t be disappointed. What I liked most was that it was vegetarian. And me being a vegetarian myself , am naturally partial to it . The injera and the various curries on top were yummy ! Also get the ginger non alcoholic beer ! Please do go with an empty stomach and clean hands as you won’t be able to eat this any other way . Feel free to give dirty looks to people who eat this with a fork and knife or worse.. order Italian !! 🧐 Get your Ethiopian fix at Maharsh asap ! ❤️

New kid on the block; visited expecting new flavors but came back disappointed. Don’t know if the spices are Ethiopian coz everything tasted suspiciously Indian save for the plating ; the flava beans although flavorful tasted exactly like homemade rajma; the bread in the thali like neer dosa; the spinach vegetable like maharashtrian pale bhaji the saviors were the four sisters soup; three sisters beer would go again only for the Ethiopian coffee ; tasty fare but it’s something we eat in our own kitchens so doubt the authenticity of Ethiopian fare as promised

Head out to @Maharsh to have a unique experience and to try some of the best dishes straight out of Ethiopia. A cool place to hang out and give your taste buds a new taste as they are bored as hell by your routine as well. One of the best places to go out if you are looking to have a unique and different experience.

Dish : Ethipoian Nutella and Cheese Puff

Restaurant : Maharsh - Ethipoian Cafe and Bites

Location : Juhu

Price : Rs. 350

Add Ons : None required

Rating : ❤️❤️❤️❤️ (4/5)

Bro Tip: The cheese adds a bit of saltiness and hence it tastes more amazing.

Finally - there is an Ethiopian place in India - it will be great for when I have the cravings. Cute small place - service is very cozy too. They have some fun flavored sodas which is a must try. For food I say average only because I did not find the taste very authentic and rather it was very Indian. They can try to make it more authentic when it comes to flavor and taste. But overall a good place definitely for those who haven’t tried Ethiopian food - you have to go try and also for those who crave for the same - there is no harm to go give it a shot.
Two Mouths Full
There are two key facets to running a successful food business, the food and the business. They have got the former down pat, and have a rather long way to go on the latter. We think their pricing needs a lot of work. Rather steep, considering it is a vegetarian place and the menu doesn't require the use of expensive ingredients. The novelty of their concept will have a customer step in for the first time. Return customers is what keeps a restaurant on its feet. We tried the Lentil filled Sambusa, and Four sisters soup to start. While the sambusa was tasty, the chilly mayo didn't really work with it. The mint dip, on the other hand and the little blob of mustard was great. The soup was hearty and tasty. We tried a thali with the local bread, which could be likened to a dosa. The veggies and lentils were tasty. The Ethiopian Nutella puff, we were told, is flown all the way from Ethiopia. This is the downside of this dessert. We don't see the reason this isn't made locally. Puff pastry should be made and eaten fresh. Reheating makes it soggy and rather unpleasant, and not worth the money you spend at all.

Fantastic food! I've had Ethiopian food in NYC and this really does no compromise. Great taste, healthy and courteous staff. Since it's a new restaurant, there is a bit of management problem, as in they get a lot of waiting and time management is a bit slow but I'm sure they will pick up. Come here for a great tasting meal and probably the only Ethiopian cuisine in Bombay.

Our first time visit was great. Being a bit obsessed with fava beans, ordered the foul, which was yum... I've not had ethiopian food before, so the injera was mind-blowing. We had it with a dry mixed vegetable side which was homey and tasty. Plan to visit again, soon.

Visited this place on a Sunday. I guess being a new place we managed to get a place in about 10 minutes. Coming to various aspects. FYI I HAVE RESERVED THE BEST FOR THE LAST
Valet parking- as soon as I entered I couldn’t find anyone to help me out. Then a server came in and went about looking for the valet. Finally they asked the valet of the salon next door and we could finally get our car parked. A another group also said they had to search for parking before they arrived. So if you are unknown to the area you may have to find your way.
Ambience- 3.5/5 tiny space with probably a capacity of maybe 20 at most to be comfortably seated. nice feel of Ethiopian culture with good music. Thankfully not very loud. Seating arrangement is strictly okay with no backrest to half the seating. So if you are coming with elderly people you may want to rethink or at least check if the sofa seating is available. zomato states it has live music which Thankfully was not there when I visited else it would have been a disaster considering how small the place is.
SERVICE2- they have just one server catering to everyone’s /needs and that is where the restaurant takes a beating. Though the server was polite and did his job, being short staffed came with its drawbacks from forgetting our order to forgetting to serve us the popcorn with our food.
Now coming to what is the main attraction of the place
FOOD & BEVERAGES (only vegetarian is served so if you are a non vegetarian and can’t do without it or even pure jain skip this place- like just don’t bother)
Let’s talk about BEVERAGES (only non alcoholic beverages served)- 1/5
We ordered
orange mojito (if you are mojito fanatic like myself you will probably have a mild heart attack as to how it tastes nothing remotely also like mojito. To me it tasted like store bought orange juice with few tasteless mint leaves. My friend said it tasted like tang which is probably even worse)
Peach ice tea- which was so sweet and tasted nothing like peach ice tea should rather just sugar water. We had to send it back but the other one we got was just a mild saviour of its previous counterpart.
cranberry beer (non alcoholic)- best of the 3 drinks but nothing exceptional
So overall just probably stick to water or aerated drinks if you have to
You may be wondering how the rating I have given is 4/5 and it’s purely because of the food
FOOD- delicious flavourful
Sambusa- delicious corn and cheese samosas. One of the dips had strong mustard flavour to much dislike of my friend but I liked it.
Messob or the Thali- we ordered thali for 3 pax with 6 veg options
Coming to contents
Injera- the Ethiopian flat bread- delicious with its sourness and softness.
Shiro wat- was okay Not bad
Fasolia- the beans preparation was delicious
Yemeser wot- we ordered a second helping. Need I say more. You give you a taste reference it tasted like bhaji of pav bhaji. I am not complaining
Mushroom tibs- nice
Kay misir wot- nice
Kayseer tibs- delicious.
Served with salad, chillies and feta dip
If I were to order something again (which will happen I will be visiting this place again, it will be injera, fasolia, kayseer tibs and yemeser wot.

IN ALL DELICIOUS FOOD. Service needs to be improved by manifold and please work on those BEVERAGES

The place is strictly okay. Called for the Ethiopian samosa - seems as though it was pre-made and then refried. Injeras were nice, the accompaniments were okay, one of the lentil curries tasted a bit stale though. Ambience wise the decor seemed authentic, but being a small place the seating is a bit uncomfortable.
This is one of the loveliest eateries in the city. A first of Ethiopian restaurants, the food is to die for. Some real lip smacking amazing delicacies with products that are sourced all the way from Ethiopia and are fresh. The pallette being similar to Indian cuisines makes for a hearty meal. Would definitely recommend to check it out. Do eat the Thali, you can't afford to miss out on that.

Was craving for African food and was delighted to know about this restaurant newly opened in juhu.
Tried foul ( fav beans in herbs spices with garlic bread) and Injire Thali served with Ethiopian coffee and popcorn... Both the items were too good. Fabulous owner and fabulous food... Will visit again.

Shraddha mehta

The best ethiopian food I've ever had! The food was better than the ethiopian food I've had in the US. We ordered the sharing platter that included all 12 veggies and all of them were delicious. I'd also recommend "foul"- a surprisingly tasty dish! I'd definitely revisit soon :)

Very disappointed that in this day and age, that the restaurant does not offer any vegan options. Literally zero. They REFUSE to make any food without the butter as ALL the food is pre-made in the morning. Basically, they do not serve anything freshly made. VERY DISAPPOINTED.

Why nothing in nonveg? Doro wot, zilzil tibs nothing... that’s so unlikely of an Ethiopian menu!! I wish to have Ethiopian cuisine any day but not without non veg for sure.

We went for a family dinner to this new place and new cuisine. Beautifully done up. Charmi as a host is very warm and explained everything patiently and with lot of interest. We really enjoyed the meal. Food is light and delicious. Will definitely go back again.
This is what we ate.
Lentil Sambusa - 5* very delicious and crispy
Foul - 4.5 *
Messob - 5*
Ethiopian nutella Cheese puff- 5*
We also had Ambo and cranberry non alcoholic beer. Which were good as well.

Overall experience was absolute paisa wasool. 😊

A very different cuisine we tried at this restaurant, Indian and Ethiopian cuisine are quite on similar lines. The ambiance and food go hand in hand with the theme of the restaurant. We tried the following :

1)Berber Fries - Ethiopian Herbed fries
2)Ethiopian Cheese Sambusa - Samosa with an ethiopian twist
3)Yemester Wot and Shiro Wat with Injara - Typical curries for main course
4)Waffle with ice cream - Soft waffles with vanilla ice cream
5) Orange Mojito - If you like it very sweet

Must try ,not your usual mainstream flavours.

An all new outlet to try something new. Go there with an open mind and you'd love it if you like great taste. Don't expect bland food. Great change and a must try.

This place is a must go place whenever you wish to try something out of the box cuisine! This is indeed the first time we had ever tried the Ethiopian cuisine. We were very impressed by the different varieties of dishes the place serves.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED:-
Ethiopian cheese samosa
Missir salad
Guava juice
Chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream

This is a very cute place right from the interiors to the Ambience and the vibe of the place is absolutely lovely and very foreign!! It is located at a prime location and it is very easy to locate. Parking might be an issue at this place. Everything we had was absolutely delicious, each and every dish was very filling. The quality and the quantity both were great!!

I recently visited this place and I had never tried Ethiopian food so I didn't know what to expect. I was wonderfully surprised by what Maharsh had to offer. Here is what I tried:

Starters 🍡

Ethiopian Cheese Sambusa - It was absolutely delicious. I think it is a perfect starter for any kind of a party. I loved it.

Ethiopian Spices Lentil Sembusa - This was also delicious. The cuisine seems to be very close to Indian food only tastes different because of the spices.

Fir - Fir - This was my favorite. I had never had injera bread so I was quite delighted by this. It was crunchy and uber flavourful.

Main course 🍝

For main course I had a platter with many things together. The platter had Yemeser Wot, which can be like our magar ki dal cooked with spices from Ethiopia, Fasolia which is beans and carrots cooked in herbs and oil, Shiro Wot which is again powdered peas cooked with oils and spices, Alichra Missir Wot which was brown lentils cooked in herbs and spices, Kayseer Tibs which is sauteed beets and carrots seasoned with cinnamon nar lastly Kay Missir work which was masoor dal cooked with Berbere sauce and spices.

What is the highlight here is the Injera Bread. It is especially made with authentic pulses from Ethiopia and turns out is not possible to ferment with even water from India. This is an authentic place which has so much culture to offer.

For dessert I had the brownie with ice cream and that's always a delight.

I had a lovely interaction with the chef and got to know a lot about the food. It is very interesting that all the food is gluten free too. Altogether, a wonderful food experience. Must try.

Cheers!

I think this is the only cafe to have Ethiopian cuisine in Mumbai. Not a very huge place, hence you may have to wait for your turn. The staff is friendly and courteous. Coming to the food, I liked the starters. We had the Sambusa, Fir Fir, Berbere fries. The highlight of this place is the platter served in a huge plate, with coffee and popcorn. The cheesecake was a let down, tasted slightly better with the chocolate sauce over it. Some may find the place a bit pricey.

Maharsh...a place serving pure vegetarian, authentic Ethiopian cuisine! The place, although very small, is quite vibrant. There are various regional elements on display on the walls, and we loved the look of the traditional crockery and serving dishes. Here's what we ordered to eat and drink:

For drinks, we ordered Peach 🍑 and Lemon 🍋 Iced Teas as well as a Blue Lagoon. Standard drinks...refreshing and served chilled. Nothing exciting here to be honest.

For appetizers, we first ordered Sambusa. They have 2 varieties: Cheese and Spices Lentil. The Sambusa is very similar to our desi Samosas. The cheese one was stuffed with some corn as well, but my favorite was the lentils one. The Ethiopian Spices Lentil Sambusa was stuffed with black lentils, mix spices, and green onions. The stuffing was well spiced, a bit meaty, and with a kick of 🌶. Very tasty, and a must order!

We then had Foul [pronounced as fooool]. I loved this dish! This dish included a puree of Fava beans that were spiced using Ethiopian spices and served with bread. The Fava beans tasted so good...somewhat similar to our desi "ghugni". With a bit of lemon and along with some bread, this dish was the highlight of our meal and is a must order!

We also ordered Fir-Fir. This dish included Ethiopian flat bread tossed in a sauce of sautéd onions, garlic, and green chillies. The bread was authentic and had a sour taste to it [fermented]. Definitely an acquired taste...we didn't like the dish much when we had the first bite, but after a few morsels, we started to enjoy the flavors.

Finally, for the main course, we ordered the staple/national food of Ethiopia, injera. Injera is a sourdough-risen flat bread with a slightly spongy texture. There were several toppings and veggies served on top of injera, such as guacamole, sour cream, beetroot, slowly cooked lentils, sautéd zucchini and carrots, etc. Full of flavors and different textures, very healthy, and perfect for sharing. We loved this. I personally would have preferred eating the dips with pita bread, and they fortunately do have the option to ordering different breads or even steamed rice.

Overall, a nice place that's serving what it promises. Healthy authentic Ethiopian cuisine...definitely a must try, especially for vegetarians. From a price point of view, considering the food quantity, dishes are reasonably priced, although some may find main course prices a bit too high.

Adios for now!

Food - 8/10
Service - 5/10
Ambiance - 9/10
VFM - 9/10

What stands out - The Ethiopian theme

This small cafe packs some heavy punch. I was fascinated to try this new cuisine and I was super happy i did. Came here on a weeknight for dinner after work and the place was fairly empty. The interiors are very Ethiopian style with tables very uniquely shaped. The place gives very positive vibe with bright colours. They have tried to blend in some regular dishes like fries and waffles which I think could be avoided.

The service however is quite average. Nothing specific I can put my finger to but the general vibe was very average. The only thing that lets this place down is the service. The food is pretty unique and surprisingly very close to Indian Pallet. The Ethiopian lentils Sambusa was simply amazing. The Injara with two curries was also exceptional.

We tried the following

1. Ethiopian cheese Sambusa - 7/10
2. Ethiopian spices lentils Sambusa - 10/10
3. Berber fries - 7/10
4. Yemeser Wot & Shiro Wat with Injara - 10/10
5. Waffle with vanilla ice cream - 4/10
6. Ethiopian coffee - 8/10
7. Orange Mojito - 4/10 (super sweet)

All in all this new place with such unique cuisine is definitely a must try. Hope they improve a bit on service though.

ABSOLUTELY YUMMY!!! My mother is from Ethiopia so I've had way too much Ethiopian food, in Ethiopia as well as India. And this was just as authentic as it gets! The taste and variety was so delicious! For an exotic experience like this, it's definitely value for money! Do try the Bayanettu so you get to taste all the variety and ask for Ambo - the naturally found sparkling mineral water from the mountains! It's naturally carbonated!

Was amazed when I learnt that Ethiopian was available so close to home! Love the cuisine.
Went in and saw an all veg menu! Was a bit worried, but persevered!
I ordered the Lentil Sambusa, and a 6 option meal. Also had a nice Berber drink!!
And I loved everything!!
Service was great too and quick.
Given them 4 stars and would have added another m if this was non veg too, but still good enough.
Having said that, I would recommend this restaurant every day of the week!

The place is small with just a few tables so not big group friendly
But the lady running it is extremely friendly and so is their chef and manager who personally come meet you and recommend dishes you can try according to your likes
Tried their foul .. loved it... even though a side dish.. can easily be had as main course
Tried their platter offering 8 different veggies.. besides the beetroot one and the French bean one.. loved all their wots
Had Ethiopian coffee...slightly bitter .. and popcorn which comes complimentary with the platter

While my family is the biggest fan of injera and Ethiopian cuisine.. we are very happy to know that it's so easily available now... because we literally wait for months art end for someone to bring them to us here in Mumbai

Good going.. hope you guys last as long as our love for the cuisine !!

Want to impress your date with something very different, tasty, exotic but perfect for the Desi palate? Take them here for lunch or dinner. Staff is very friendly, food is great and atmosphere is cosy. I had a thali by myself and polished it in 5 minutes!

My first ever experience of Ethiopian cuisine and i am highly delighted. This is a newly opened Ethiopian restaurant and a complete vegetarian hub on the streets of Juhu. Starting from the decor, seating, serving method and even the music is that of Ethiopia. Limited seating option though, so make sure you reserve in advance.

Details:

Food - vegetarian

Alcohol - no

Staff - trained and attentive

Service - pretty quick

Cost - reasonable

Dishes to have:

Ethiopian cheese sambusa - stuffed with corn and cheese

Ethiopian spices lentil sambusa - stuffed with black lentils, green onions and spices

fir - fir - its basically an ethiopian flat bread tossed in sauce of sauteed onions

Foul - puree fava beans herbed with spices and served with bread

family style messob (thali) - highly recommended

This is a great place to try something different and definitely love it.

Ethiopian food finally in Bombay!
For those who have never tried this cuisine, it is a must have...the flavours are amazing & the family style eating makes it a joyous experience.
We had the family style messob (thali) with 10 vegetables so that we can try everything on the menu (greedy much😬)
The presentation was traditional and the food 😋
The following stood out the most:
1) Mushroom tibs
2) beetroot & carrot sautéed with cinnamon
Having said that, each dish had a different flavour which ensured that each bite you took made it a delicious experience !

For dessert, we had something which was off the menu - it was like a cheese puff slathered with Nutella & served with ice cream. It was quite nice !

Charmi was very informative - giving us insights into how they procure the ingredients, Ethiopian culture, etc.
The ambiance is charming with super cute traditional decor

Though I did miss some traditional flavours from my previous experiences with this cuisine but it’s a great start & I am very happy to have this cafe open its doors so that Bombay can get a taste of this wonderful cuisine !
1st Ethiopian Cafe ( as far as I know ) has opened its doors to Mumbai! First of all kudos for taking up the risk & coming up with such a rare cuisine.

[ PS : I have never tried this cuisine before so I can't compare it with anything ]

FOOD ( 5/5 )

Four Sisters Soup : Beetroot, Carrots, Green onions & Broccoli based soup where all the flavours were blended very well, served with herbed butter garlic bread. Lovely preparation!

Fir - Fir : It's an appetizer, teff flour based pancake, made into small pieces, tossed with local spices, along with some thin potato chips. Very much filled appetizer. Loved the taste. MUST HAVE.

Family Style Messob : I was confused with what to order in main course the chef suggested us to go with thali, most of their we opted for
• Yemesser Wot
• Fasolia ( MUST HAVE )
• Shiro Wot
• Kayseer Tibs ( MUST HAVE )
• Kay Missir Wot
It is served on layer of injera ( Ethiopian flat bread ) which is again made of teff flour, it's a vegan preparation & is considered super healthy too. It was served in a very fancy way. Also the green chilli stuffed with onion sprinkled with spices was lovely.

Ethiopian Coffee : Black coffee ( we can add sugar to it if we wish ) served with roasted Barley seeds, peanuts & popcorn. Yes that's how you are supposed to have an authentic Ethiopian Coffee.

SERVICE ( 5/5 )

Staff was very much knowledgeable about their unique cuisine, also they were attending & helping me decide what to order. Service was quick.

AMBIANCE ( 5/5 )

Sticking to their theme they have tried showcasing the Ethiopian food & culture through their ambiance also on TV & music you can hear their songs. About 4/5 tables which can accommodate upto 25 pax at a time. You might have to face a que on weekends.

CONCLUSION

I really don't know how authentic it was ( I have never tasted this cuisine before ) but trust me it was super delicious & my experience was awesome! I want to explore more of their food now!
A very healthy option to go for.

Food-9/10
Ambience-7/10
Service-8/10
Hygiene-9/10
Price-8/10

Recommendation: do visit this place, in case you want to try something new and delicious !!!
I loved the food, they seem to have got Ethiopian right. We ordered French fries coated with berbere spice and injera with 10 different dishes on it. Going forward, I hope they can make injera in-house.

It's always a delight to hear there's a new cuisine in the city, and especially if it's a pure veg restaurant (this second part matters only if you are a jain on the stricter end of the spectrum). But the joy of discovering a new and taste palate brings with it high expectations, and thus apprehension about the capacity of the place to deliver. So, when I heard two days back that a new (and only) place offering Ethiopian food had recently opened in Juhu and that it had rave reviews, I knew I had to check it out, and soon!

I went there this evening with a friend. The restaurant was almost empty, apart from one couple. Generally, that makes me doubt the place but it being only 8pm on a weekday, I didn't think much about it. As soon as we entered, we were taken in by the cosy ambiance - low wooden tables and seating, walls textured like plastered mud, ornamented with colourful, woven plate art and lights with metallic lampshades in animal skin textures. It felt like entering into what I imagined would be a very African cottage.
There was one authentic thing I didn't really appreciate though - mosquitoes! Luckily, we weren't bitten, but we could see some hovering near the tables by the door.

The menu has some 25 Ethiopian dishes plus sandwiches, pizza and pastas on offer, good enough variety for a café, though only half of those are offered in jain. This is understandable, but I hope more dishes get jain versions as the demand for it increases. The dessert section is severely lacking though (more on it below).
Also, the menu is a seemingly small and often ignored but an important aspect of ambience-building. Maharsh's menu turned out to be the "bare-minimum" kind and needs redesigning to make it more aesthetic.

***We ordered two dishes - Ethiopian Cheese Sambusa and Foul.

**The sambusas were a kind of flatter-than-Indian samosas stuffed with corn, cheese and spinach. Perfectly golden-crisp, with well balanced spices, fresh hot till the last bite and served a fine green chutney and a a tangy orange-coloured sauce. (8 pieces, very filling)

**Foul turned out to be fava beans in a spiced red gravy, served with bread, and contrary to it's name, was very fine indeed ;) Again, good quantity for two people.

We were served ceramic plates with a clay-baked design, which is decent presentation. However the cutlery and glasses were ordinary metal and plastic, which could be improved upon. Maybe replaced with wooden/antique-looking metal cutlery for a distinct African effect. It must be noted however, that everything was very clean.

Coming to the dessert, I have a really sweet tooth and every eat-out must end with sugars. It was disappointing though to see the menu had only two options - one variety of waffles and a brownie+ ice cream. We would have loved to discover some traditional Ethiopian desserts. If we wanted to eat regular stuff like waffles/brownie in regular flavours like chocolate, we could have gone to any any of the dozen other dessert parlours in Juhu, and that is exactly what we did.

Last but not to forget, the staff was very polite and helpful and made it a great experience.

By the time we left, the place was almost full.

***Ratings:

Ambiance: 4/5
Food: 5/5
Cleanliness: 4.5/5
Service: 5/5
Bang for the buck: 4/5

Overall rating: 4.5/5

I'll definitely be visiting again, this time with family, to try the special injera thalis, and hopefully, a delicious Ethiopian dessert!
