Review Ourem 88 - Palolem

Ankura Nayak
If you’re looking for authentic English food in Goa, Ourem is the place to be. There are 7-8 tables in the verandah and the kitchen is a home kitchen run by an English couple. The host is gracious and patient with his recommendations. Sticky toffee pudding was good.

The host (Rajat) we were staying at recommended us of here and went on and on about how amazing this amazing little place is. At a point, i was wondering how amazing can the food be for one to talk so high about it?! But i am super happy to be pleasantly surprised and this has been one of the best meals i have ever had all my life! Brett is a sweet heart who’ll try and do everything to accommodate you and take you over the menu with so much passion about the outstanding food they make. Make sure you make a booking before-hand because this is a small space and they serve only between 6-9 pm and only about 6-10 tables a night. That should explain their small batch expertise. The elderflower gin was too good to be true. My personal favorite out of all the food we had was the Espresso Crème Brûlée which was right on point and the Quiche is to die for! The quiche reminded me of my dearest human who loves quiche in-general and actually bought tears to my eyes since he wasn’t present there with me that day. Thank you for squeezing in some time for us even though you were running full, Brett! And thanks for the incredible work you guys do which proves food is so much more than just the tongue. I wish you and Jodie all the good health and strength to keep giving us these superlative experiences. Cheers! Coming back soon for more xx

This place is run by a lovely chap from Uk.The food is authentic and delicious and the ambiance is serene. I have eaten cheese cakes across the world but I never had a better cheese cake then this one. Brett helps you understanding the menu and suggests as per your likes and dislikes. We were lucky to find a spot immediately but it’s preferred to make reservations before you go.

This place is beyond perfect. Everything is excellent. It would be a loss to not go to this place. The chef/owner is from the UK and really loves this restaurant and it’s very clear from the food. We ordered the calamari stuffed with Goan sausages, the pork ribs, the sea bass filet and espresso martini and strawberry and vanilla cheesecake. Get reservations beforehand because it’s really hard to get a seat in the restaurant

Went for my birthday dinner and what a wonderful experience we have had. The place is small simple and very tastefully done. Bret, the owner was very friendly. He is also very honest - like when we were ordering some sides along with other items, he suggested to wait and order later if we still feel the need for it. Really appreciated how he focused more on customer experiences rather than his own profits. When we asked if he bakes the breads, he said that he buys them from a local bakery (not taking credit and also giving due credit and promotion to local businesses). The food was at a different level altogether. The taste was so on spot and you can feel all the flavours. My personal favourite was the chocolate fondant and the smoked and mashed Kingfish (don't recall the name of the dish as I was busy devouring it). Thanks a lot Bret and team for making the birthday experience so wonderful.

This place is an absolute hidden gem. I've been to some of the best restaurants in Goa and this place is right on top - among maybe the top 3 in terms of service and food taste and quality. We just happened to go, these since we couldn't find any well rated places on Zomato this side of town, and we couldn't have been more surprised. The host is a gem of a guy who ensures you have the best experience from start to end. He greets you, personally walks you through the menu, reads off the daily specials, and even recommends what you are likely to enjoy based on your meat/other preferences. He was there throughout, checking on us at every course of the meal if we were having a good time. I don't think one could be a better host. And he was this hospitable to every table, every guest. The food was fantastic -- presentation, preperation, and taste. I tried the beetroot carpacio, baked feta and peppers, Chicken Kiev, and vanilla panna cotta with passion fruit. Everything was very elegantly prepared and presented and all the flavours were on point. The Kiev deserves a special call out, it's the best I've ever had. This place has my highest recommendation. Do visit when you can. The prices may appear steep at a glance -- can go as high as 900 a main. But I found everything well worth it, especially when you consider the portions. I paid roughly 2,500 for a dinner of two, and every penny was well spent (especially when you consider that you would anyway not spend less than 1700-2000 on a dining experience comparable to a fine dine in terms of taste and presentation).

What can I say as I’m a foodie? Amazing food, amazing service and amazing ambience! The most unlikely place in Goa to get great French cuisine.

Simply fantastic a place be it in terms of authenticity of cuisine or Brett's warm hospitality. Definitely try any special items on the menu. There is a cat to keep you entertained too ! Wonderful ambience and food in huge portions. Worth the price.

Ourem 88 is located in one of cosy corners in one of the lanes of Palolem. Brett has indeed created a warm ambience for guests. Each dish that we ordered was d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s! I would highly recommend this place! P.S. Brett doesn't mind giving a tip or two on nearby places to visit.

Excellent food. Brett is a lovely guy and Jodie a MasterChef. Need to call and book in advance, at least a week or two. No walk-ins. Meal here was a highlight of our trip.

This is a hidden gem in South Goa. A perfect place for good food connoisseurs and travelers who'd like to add a fine dine experience to their travel. It's run by Brett, from London. There are only 7 tables, so booking a table in advance is necessary. The ambience is simple yet very warm and welcoming. Brett will explain you certain dishes in the menu which needs to be explained. Brett will personally take your order and serve you. The food is by far the best I've had a Goa, in terms of the taste, the quality and quantity. I'm not going to describe every dish that I had. But the fish was fresh and cooked to perfection, the meat was juicy, succulent and again, cooked to perfection. The consistency of the sauce, after cooling down a bit, with the steak was smooth and thick with excellent flavours. I personally don't like to spoil the taste of the main course but the desserts were excellent. Small and cosy but a must visit place in South Goa. Just one thing, this place is CLOSED ON MONDAYS and it's a DINNER ONLY place. Plan accordingly if you don't want to miss dining here. Ourem 88 is a bit expensive but, worth every penny for the entire delightful experience. If your lady love is a food lover, she won't reject your proposal for marriage if you propose her here. Highly recommended.

What a fantastic evening - Brett the host was so attentive and the food was spectacular! Highly recommend booking in advance as no less that 15 people were turned away tonight while we were there - you won't regret it! The whole baked brie, belly pork and beef fillet were all outstanding and the strawberry daiquiri was the best we've had in India! we'll definitely be back next time we're in Palolem - thank you xx

How can this only get 4.8 out of 5. Nobody has given it less than 5. It well deserves the 5 points it is without doubt the best restaurant within 30 miles.

Great food and amazing service from Brett and Jodie, who opened the place a few years ago. A small and friendly place tucked away behind the main beach restaurants, serving a wonderful selection of European fusion food, all freshly prepared by Jodie. A must, but book well in advance to avoid disappointment. A +++

Really excellent food - both the quality of the ingredients and the skill of the cooking stands out from most places in India. Wonderful service too. Thanks Brett and Jodi.

A modest house located in a quiet lane of Palolem - only a small, no-frills board that reveals that this is a restaurant. 6 tables, light music and lighting. On the first instance, it might feel that you’ve walked into someone’s private party. But then begins the magic.

Ourem 88 serves mostly English food - they have a fixed menu of about 15 items in all including starters and desserts. Other than that, they also have a specials board with another 7-8 dishes. Theirs is food that you will not be able to find anywhere else in the area - an exclusive menu with each and every dish executed to perfection. We tried their Chicken Pate, Veg Quiche of the day, and Cheese Souffle. The Quiche was just great - very soft and crumbly, and fully of flavour. The onion marmalade that it came with was also delicious. I was so full from
The quiche that I could not finish the cheese soufflé - a very rich, heavy dish. The soufflé had been baked to perfection - it was fluffy and the cheese just melted in my mouth. But it was a big dish and the two of us could not finish it. We had the most delightful LIITs here - one of the best I’ve had so far.

The only trouble with this place is that you just can’t walk in here. They open only in the evenings from 6:00 pm to 10:30 pm and they have a very small number of tables. Their place gets booked well in advance, so during the high season, you have to make a reservation weeks in advance. But yes, the food is worth the wait. And the service is excellent - Brett is very, very sweet. He will take you through the menu and explain about each and every item in detail. You should go with his suggestions on what to order.

P. S. The bread they serve with their dishes is the best bread you’ll find in this area. Not be missed.

10 April 2019

RESERVATION IS A MUST FOR THIS PLACE !

NOT A GOOD PLACE IF YOU ARE A VEGETARIAN

Owned by a Husband & Wife - Brett and Jodie, who hail from England. Wife is the Chef.

When I Reach, it was All Reserved for 5 Days. I reached at Friday and owner straight away said No.
Because they only serve 20 people in a day as the Lady Owner is The Only Chef at Ourem 88.

The Restaurant Opens at 6pm.
I was Turned Away by the Owner, Brett because I showed up without a Reservation. I never knew that Reservation was required at Ourem88.

So by writing this review, my purpose is to Educate the Customers, to not to Reach here without a Reservation...

The most amazing place in Palolem area to have some continental delights. Owned by a husband and wife, this has 6 tables which might even be reserved for an entire week altogether. But in case you are lucky, you will be treated to one of the meals of a lifetime.

Such a quaint little restaurant near Palolem Beach run by the sweetest couple from the United Kingdom! Cozy interiors, good music and absolutely delicious food! We had the calamari stuffed with Goan sausage which is served with fresh warm bread, and the first bite sent me to heaven and back. For the main course, I had the pie of the day which was a beautiful beef steak pie with mushroom, green beans and mashed potatoes and it was huge!
As it was my birthday, my partner asked Brett if he could bring a strawberry cheesecake with a candle on it and much to my delight, Brett brought it out one of the most pretty desserts I’ve seen with a few candles lit on it, and that’s not all but he and his wife told us that it’s on the house!
Overall I would go back to Ourem 88 for the amazing food and the friendly service whenever I go back to Palolem!
A few things to remember are: 1) if you have a small appetite I suggest you go straight to the main course because I’m not exaggerating when I say it’s huge. 2) go before 9 or make a reservation beforehand even if the timing is given till 11. 3) Vegetarians may have some difficult as the menu is predominantly non vegetarian! 4) Also during the off season, Brett and his wife go back the UK and come back around the month of September if I’m not wrong!

Placed hidden on the Ourem street, right behind another cafe what we thought was a nice restaurant turns out was a cozy little place named Ourem 88! We reached there at a comfortable time around 9 but we were told that they were about to close the kitchen! But with persuasion we took our seats! So what you should know about this place is that one,it has a max capacity of 20ish people with 5-6 tables! The menu is limited but oh you won’t be disappointed! The staff,Brett also the owner, waiter and your server is extremely polite, friendly, helpful and will make sure you have a memorable experience!
As there is a lack of everything around Palolem,I wanted to celebrate my friend’s birthday! I asked him if he had any birthday candles he could put around the cheesecake which I had ordered! I was ambitious with no hope! Not only did he take efforts in finding the candles but also treated us with the cake! That was extremely sweet of him!
Food 10/10
Ambiance 10/10
Experience 10/10
PS-1)even if the time says 11,go around 8 to get a place for sure
2)only if you have a big appetite, order the appetizers because the mains are huge and filling
3) I wouldn’t call it a vegetarian friendly place!

Finally got a table after being unlucky on two occasions and I understood why. The Decor is very simple and welcoming with just around 6-7 tables. Brett the host is amazing - explains the menu one minute, pours out wine on one table, cleans the third - all with a smile that is in keeping with the Homely atmosphere of the place. We ordered the beef (RARE - yes rare ! ), Pork chops, ribs, Carpaccio and topped it off with the Chocolate fondant and Chocolate Cheese Cake. A day of Beef and chocolate with a Bottle of Fratelli was a really exceptional Experience. Even had the chance to meet the very shy and lovely Jody to cap of one of our most unforgettable dining experiences ever. Must visit and yes please reserve in advance. Thank you Brett and Jody !

Ambience - Cosy little place with a seating capacity of 20 pax. Comfortable chairs with candlelight arrangement. Walkable distance from the southern end of Palolem beach.

Service - The best service till date. Brett is in-charge of the service while his partner manages the kitchen. He answered all our queries on the menu and options available. We ended up chatting with Brett till 11:30, well post the place went empty.

Food - They have a limited menu and serve only European dishes. Most of the options have Non-veg. For appetizers we chose Quiche of the Day which had Pears, Walnut and Blue Cheese. Tasted well.

For main we ordered Half Roasted chicken with stuffed porchini mushrooms with roasted potatoes and leeks. It was served with a red wine jus. The chicken was served with skin on which was crispy. The portion size was fit for 2. The taste was exceptional.

Desert was a chocolate fondant - Soft baked chocolate cake with gooey centre. Was served along with a cream on the side. Well, nothing better than a freshly baked cake. It was a stunning finale to a delicious meal.

Easily the best European restaurant in Goa. The best part about Ourem88 is the personalized service given to all the diners. Be there if you're in South Goa and want to try out some great food. Reservation must.

Outstanding restaurant!!!! The food quality is immense, the presentation, to die for and the taste is exquisite! Jodie is a Michelin standard chef and Brett provided first class service on both of our visits. I cannot recommend them highly enough and we can't wait to return.

We sort of gate-crashed the restaurant...ended up coming there well after the kitchen had closed. But, Brett (owner) was kind enough to welcome us and at least try out the dessert...which eventually became a proper dinner.

Once Brett hands you over the menu, he explains all the offerings and helps you select the menu after you tell him about your choices.

The food is prepared by his wife (we didn't ask him about her name) but anyways, you can feel the passion with which they run Ourem88 once you have tasted the food there.

We had ordered for a roasted chicken (had a much elaborate description in the menu) and a strawberry cheesecake (simply the icing on the cake as far as our experience of Ourem88 goes)...
that and the hospitality extended by Brett :)

The best food we had on our recent trip to south Goa... Pork chops was so well made but Goan sausage stuffed calamari was like out of this world.... Chocolate fondant (which was quite hot) was devoured by us within 4mins.... More than the food it's the experience we had with the owner of this place, Brett White. What a wonderful person, made us feel at home. So unfortunately Ourem 88 accepts only cash payments, and I came to know about that when we were almost done with our meal, we didn't have any cash on me. So I asked Brett what can be done. He was like "don't worry about it, enjoy your meal, we'll sort that thing later." We were happily shocked to hear that. Then we sorted that payment by doing bank transfer that too after we reached our hotel room.

Ourem 88 must be in your list when you visit Palolem. Yes but reserve a table before dropping in. ;)

Was extremely disappointed by the rude, bigoted and discriminatory behavior of a foreign couple Brett and Jodie who run this place. Landed up one evening without a reservation as we were in the neighborhood. Apologized to the owners for not making a reservation and requested them to give us a table as the restaurant was half empty, but our request was not heeded. Asked them for dessert, salad or soup or even some take away, no go again. Asked if we could come back another time, no again, coz the place is closed for the season. Tried to request and convince in many other polite and friendly ways but still no go. Basically, all we got to hear was a big NO from the rude and obnoxious owners. One look around the restaurant and we noticed the tables were occupied by only white skins. Unfortunately, my friends and I were all Indian dark skins. Understood the game these white skins were playing on us in our own country and walked out.

Really amazing food. Will highly recommend to visit this place. I really wanted to go their from last couple of visits but they were always packed. They have very limited tables so do reserve. We tried their beet goat cheese salad and stuffed chicken breast with mushroom, both were amazing, also pannacotta at the end was out of the world!

No food in Goa is as good as this place. Definitely deserve Michelin Stars. The owners Brett and Jodie, the husband wife duo, are fabulous person. While Brett manages the guests and the menu, Jodie takes ownership of the kitchen and food

We had ordered for Charcoal Grilled Squids for Starters, Oven Baked Pork Chops for the Main Course and Plum Tart with IceCream for the dessert

The squids were fresh from the sea, drizzled in Olive Oil and seasoning. The Pork Chops were perfectly baked with the pork remaining succulent with juices and was coming of cleanly from the ribs. The dessert was heavenly served with home made ice cream

Will definitely be back here for the treat

The best place for a sumptuolicious experience. The chef Jodie and her partner Brett are brilliant hosts. They are generous enough to carry the considerably large and heavy menu blackboard around for you to read the daily specials. The ambience is quite a cusp between an old Indian brick house and a semi European bistro. The food was extraordinary and I was transported into thinking Ourem 88 should ve been a two Michelin star place. The mushroom bruschetta with truffle oil was absolutely good to start with and so was the baby back pork ribs. Brett brings his produce from different parts of the world and in this instance it was pork ribs from Belgium. The best I've had so far, the meat just came off the bone without much of a tug with the knife and fork. It was evenly matched by the best slow cooked pork belly with a neat layer of crackling to savour it with. It was really succulent and was a great piece of fabulous meat that went well with the apple sauce that came with it. The pan fried sea bass was brilliantly cooked to perfection and served with a salsa verde which was par excellence. I enjoyed all the interesting conversations o had with Brett about Ourem 88 and the way I felt about it. Please don't forget to call and reserve a place at the Ourem. They only function for a short period of 5 hours and is the only place you can get quality European food in goa. It is just that fabulous and I would always return to this place every time I'm in palolem.

The beauty of Goa is that, sometimes in a nook or corner you will find something so amazing that it will blow your mind away. If you love food, Ourem 88 is the place to be no doubt about that. Now to the reviews:

One thing you need to do is that call and book a table at least two weeks before, they have very less tables and they fill up fast, if you reach unbooked you definitely wont get a table.

Food - Ourem is a European cuisine place, so ya no curries and nans, more focus on meats and pies. They have certain fixed choices on the menu and apart from that they have a menu on the board which may change. The best option is to choose a meat of your choice and ask the manager and he will help you out with what the things mean. We had the stuffed calamari, the pork belly, beef filet and a veg pie, which was filled with blue cheese (tasty!!). The food was cooked to perfection and the taste of everything was unique.

Desserts - We had the chocolate fondant. Oh my it was so tasty I could eat that all my life, if you are not a chocolate fan, they have a creme-brulee too :)

Ambiance - It is a nice cosy place, very few tables, but amazing for a date or a nice dinner.

Service - If I could give a 10/5 I would, the service is so personalized, you feel like a guest at their home. The warmth that they had is worth emulating. If you are near palolem, you cannot give this place a miss. Just be carefull to book in advance :)

Thank you Ourem for that lovely lovely night
