Review Saravana Bhavan - Pondicherry

Bhargav S
I had idli sambar and ghee roast dosa for dinner. I loved the sambar and chutneys here and service was little slow that's all.

One of the best veg restaurants around here. Reasonable Price, Nice Ambiance, Good Service. P.s : rice is available only in lunch, and dosa/idli is available only in breakfast & dinner. Filter Coffee is a must try, almost the best one I ever had. 7/10 & Special Thali is worth trying. Food : 8/10 Pricing: 8/10 Service: 9/10 Ambience: 6/10 (Ac Hall: 9/10)

People here are very helpful. They are really good host. Food was delicious. Overall I would recommend this place.

This restaurant was thankfully open even on Christmas day. The 2 Waiters were super busy serving to multiple customers and our order of puri, masala ghee roast, masala dosa , idli and coffee took some time. Regardless the food was tasty, the portions were filling, the pricing is economical, the staff courteous and the ambiance was decent.

Indian cuisine is prominent around the globe for its predominance of hot spices and sweets.Indian dishes served by Hotel Pondicherry Saravana Bhavan and their cooking method revolve around the local availability of ingredients — feel free to find out if they're to your liking! This place offers Vegetarian dishes. Pondicherry Saravana Bhavan as there is a special menu for little ones with fun and healthy snacks and drinks. In addition to that, such features as business lunch and catering are provided in this place.

The place which serves real South Indian cuisines. I had breakfast, lunch and dinner (tiffin's only) Good idlis, dosa's and filter coffee to start the day, Special thali was really worth for lunch, Dinner they have only tiffin's like dosa's, chapati and some chinese items Taste - 5 Service - 5 Ambience - 4 Overall a good place to visit and fill up the tummy.

Delivered sambar for parrota instead of kurma.

Heard a lot about this place and when in Pondicherry thought of trying the epitome of south flavours !! But wait ... this is just the reverse of the game !! Pathetic Food worst service none to listen ... horrible horrible horrible 🙄

I ordered for special meals. Got delivered without a bill. No traces if it's saravana Bhavan's food. Also food was horrible. Zomato needs to verify on delivery boy also

I ordered chilli parotta -the worst ;from this hotel .It was too spicy that I had irritation in my ear and burning sensation in my oesophagus

Typical of saravana Bhavan, I loved their idly, vada and Pongal. The idly was soft n fluffy and the Vada was crispy and hot. The Pongal was really out of this world. One of the best I have had so far in different branches of theirs. Overall I will go again n try other dishes

We were roaming around and saw Saravana Bhawan in the market. Without any further discussions, we just hopped in. They have two types of seating arrangements, a normal hall and an a/c hall.

They elucidate how south Indian food is made.

We tried paper masala dosa and paneer masala dosa. We had pista icecream for desert and a filter coffee.

The dosas and chutneys served with it were outstanding. The paneer masala dosa was the best I have ever had.

The service is super quick, the staff is very friendly. The value for money is superb!

This is a must visit place.

Love the place..podi dosa is fabulous and filter coffee is also amazing. The staff is polite. However, they are in hurrying for everything! So thats an off factor but otherwise really good place to eat south indian food and relish coffee

The saravana bhavan was very good place but
Food quality is good so something changes for starter items . And service industries was really good so request for all staff change your food quality. Thanks again for saravana bhavan.

Amazing food. Authentic taste for a Bangalorean.
The rice sambar combination was perfect after a series of junk eatabkes for an entire day. Prefer this over Anand Bhavan in Pondicherry.

Name says it all. Saravana never disappoints. Courteous staff. This is a small outlet and they dont have all the varieties available all the time. But taste wise we didnt feel any compromise. Go for it !!!!!

Surprised to see raving reviews about this HSB branch. Stepped in for dinner while wandering around Nehru street on a lazy Saturday.
Ambience: 4/10
The place was looking unclean especially the tables and the hand wash area.
Service: 4/10
Food/taste: 1/10.
ordered a set of porotta- kurma and another plate of chilly porotta.
The kurma was unappetizing and full of big chunks of potatoes and very less of anything else
Porottas felt like they were reheated.
Chilly porotta was too oily and sub par.
Paid for the food after leaving the unfinished plates of food.
I feel this branch gives the other HSB brand a bad name.

Coffee paradise. Super tasty coffee served *piping hot* in a traditional steel glass and bowl. Instant kick!!
Hands down the best filter coffee I've ever had.

Dosas are awesome. We were the first customers when we went for breakfast. Ordered ghee roast, onion, masala and rava dosas.

Missed out the much hyped lunch thali though. Shall definitely try during our next visit.

HSB is a famous name everywhere! Yet again we tried at Pondicherry for breakfast as it was the only restaurant that opens as early as 6 45 and serves hot tasty food before 7am.
There's no AC; ambience was normal as any HSB outlet would look like anywhere else. Friendly staff. Quantity and quality of food was really good compared to HSB outlets in Chennai.
As we went for breakfast for two days, tried sambar vada, sambar idly, plain dosa, ghee dosa, plain vada and all tasted good. Chutneys and sambhar were good and we had no complaints.
We were surprised to find no gst included in the bill. As there is no gst, price was comparatively less for the good taste.
Do try this place for a good taste of vegetarian foods.
My fellow vegetarian travelers : you may have read raving reviews of Sarguru or even A2B Anand Bhandar as some of the best joints for getting some good local veg food in Pondi. However, one visit to a relatively unknown Saravana bhavan is sure to change that. Not only do they serve authentic south indian food - which btw is what travellers from rest of India want to experience when in South - but also provide customer service worthy of kings. For example, there were unlimited free refills to chutney and sambhar for a 55 rupee masala dosa and that too extremely prompt (see attached pic as proof of the 6 sambhar refills that I so thoroughly enjoyed). We ended up tipping more than the cost of a masala dosa just coz of their awesome service. And we ate there 4 days during our trip and hygiene was well maintained at all times.

In summary, this hidden gem is the place to experience authentic south indian food with the customer service one expects from the best of Indian restaurants.

A reliable place when you are looking for authentic south Indian food and breakfast, supporting presence globally across the world has a presence in the white town of Pondicherry in a small seating space that does not compromise on the quality of the service or the food.
Have had their food across TN ranging from Tamil Nadu to the coastal highway and even had a change to have a go at their food in Germany.

Certainly a place that stays true to the preparation and serving of food to be competency authentic Tamilian food.

Ok so our aim was to have the Meal. Now the question which rises is why was having a meal so important. Now I have heard alot about this non ending sort of food you can have on banana leaf with different kind of veggies and all so it was in my to do list of things. But no one tells you that anywhere in Pondicherry or Chennai you can get meals only in lunch time and not in dinner. So if you want to enjoy the meal make time for it in lunch and we did that. We were planning to go some where else but since lunch time was nearing closing and we were damn hungry when we saw this place we just had to have it.
Since 'Sarvana Bhavan' is a chain of restaurants serving South Indian food we thought this will be a good choice. It was full to maximum and number of servers were few I am not sure this is usual happening here or due to 25th Dec. I finally went to front desk and got to under stand what I could order so we went for the special meal. Finally we were served after lot of calling out and food was fab. I cannot tell you the names of the dishes as no one was their who could tell us as well. You can see the attached photo. Rice is served unlimited along with all the veggies. Papad and sweets are served single and if you take more you are charged. I donot know the names but what I know is that there was rasam, sambhar, butter milk, curd, gun powder, ghee, rice roti, some sort of kadhi, cabbage, bitter gourd in gravy, potato sabji, payasam, imirti , veg pulao to name some. Over all food was great, service could be improved but food wise not to be missed.

Order only South Indian or go empty stomach.
The place is generally crowded. Kind of clean and fast service.
Nothing extraordinary or worth recommendation.

Just average. Service was good but food was bland. Ordered Onion Uttapam which was ok ok. Noodles was bland and Chole Puri Chole had just 4 pieces of chole and was filled with coconut.
Avoidable place
Adithya Shriram
Food is decent. Ghee roast and pongal was good.
Coffee was pathetic. Not deserving of a saravana bhavan name.
Otherwise decent hygiene and service.

The afternoon special thali was totally worth the money . The service was good and we were taken care of . Choice of food items on the thali was also sufficiently elaborate . The meeta pan was simply out of the world !!

Why even think about going to a 'sarvana' when you have so many amazing french dine places. Moreover the place is crowded like hell at peak hours. Not recommended at all.
Nadiger Chaitanya
Kinda average place. And, no meals at night :( which is the case with most of the hotels in Pondy. However, quality of food is good. Hygiene not up to the mark as the waiters are not real professionals.

It's really annoying that meals not available at night. Came here after reading reviews on Zomato about meals on banana leaves.. I feel Zomato should start tracking such specific info in the menu/restaurant profile.

Sarvana Bhavan is a household name for anyone who has spent event a small amount of time in Tamil Nadu. With restaurants all over the world, you can be assured that whichever one you walk into, there will be good reasonable food.

We had the South Indian thali, with banana leaf serving and all.

The Kar Kozumbu (some curry with Lady Fingers in it) was fantastic. We all would have ordered atlas 2-3 more servings of it. The rasam was very authentic. The right blend of sour and spicy. We cleaned up our dishes and still had plenty of space for two glasses each of butter milk.

A very safe option to ensure that you are completely satisfied with your food.
