Review Shifa Restaurant - Pune

RUPAM RAJAK
We visited this restaurant twice within a day interval once in the afternoon and once at night and the items we ordered were chicken biriyani, tandoori chicken , and one paneer dish and all the items were fresh and tasty. The biriyani smells so yum and has a blended aroma of all whole spices. The chicken tandoors tastes were balanced. Moreover the price range of every item is reasonable and pocket friendly. The staff were awesome and well behaved. I strongly recommend this restaurant.

Located in the heart of Nana Peth, opp Chand Tara Masjid (Markas), serves all oind of chicken and other nonveg items as well veg. Chinese, north Indian and other items available at reasonable prices. The Chicken Tandoor Biryani was a good option, also Chicken Dum Biryani is a must try. Parathas in the morning or evening freshly made in front of you. Try Kheema fry with paratha or pav, Dalcha Khana, Chilli Chicken dry, also Bheja fry.

Non veg dishes, Biryani's taste great! Dishes are actually low on quantity, but tastes Yumm! Affordable Prices. Don't expect sparkling dishes and too much hygiene. Visit for food quality and taste.

Simple restaurant but value for money. Decent veg and non veg food without being heavy on pocket. Surprisingly courteous staff. Couldn't explore much of the menu but whatever I had was great particularly the price it was offered at. Do not expect squeaky clean eatery though.

I prefer this place for early morning heavy breakfast in Nana Peth. I like their Chai, Malai (Milk Cream), Keema Fry, and Bheja Fry with Kerala Paratha.

One of the best restaurant in town to enjoy non veg food. Dnt go for ambience or service. If u r looking just for food, head up here n eat till u drop. N that too very cheap.

I will start by thanking Sanil Mahajan for introducing me to Shifa about a year and a half ago. I had been to similar joints before, like Radio and Bismillah in camp. But now, its all about Shifa when I crave for Beef Kheema. Cannot think of any other place that serves kheema so awesome. Have been visiting this place at least once a month or more, since.
My personal favourites are the Beef Kheem, Beef fry and the Bheja fry…. The taste is so tremendous, one cannot help overeating, every single time. I have to highly recommend this to every meat lover… you need to try this place out.
My Rating is somewhere between 4.5 and a 5.....
Yes, it is not a fine diner or a place you can take your family to.. and a parcel just never tastes like the freshly served preparations. But one tip here, in case you have to take a parcel… DO NOT MICROWAVE… heat the kheema or the fry in a shallow pan till it actually starts to boil… this will get the taste as close as possible to the restaurant table served.

HAPPY BURPING….

Review Update - I just cannot get enough of this place ever... Never get tired of the meat they serve... Every meat lover's paradise...

There are fine dine restaurants or street food stalls that most foodies like to visit to enjoy their favourite dishes. Then maybe every 2-3 years, the place becomes inconsistent or falls out of favour with these foodies who in turn move to newer joints in search of better delicacies. Then there are age old places like Good Luck or Vaishali which have been in the hearts of most Punekars who refuse to stop going there once a week at least.

An unsung hero of such restaurants has been Shifa. Most people don't know about this place probabaly because the taboo associated with serving or eating Beef which this place is famous for. I'm not too sure how long this place exists but I know someone who has been visiting it since 1997. Shifa is located in the narrow lane connecting Apollo theatre to Nanapeth Police Chowky. Located bang opposite the famous Chaand Tara Masjid, it's a place which you could easily miss. I've been personally going there since 2004 and the biggest upgrade I've seen is the owners getting uniforms for the waiters. The restaurant simple goes about serving delicious food without caring for great reviews or even for that matter getting a listing on Zomato (I had to get it added on Zomato a year back!).

Veggies can stay off this restaurant unless you're in for a Special Chai which is the hottest selling item here. The cups and saucers havent changed in all these years which tells a story - all you cleanliness freaks, STAY OFF this place.

Must try items include:

Beef Kheema Fry - If not for the bull meat ban in Maharashtra, would definitely rate it the best kheema available in town. Buffalo meat will never match the texture or taste of bull meat and I can always tell the difference. Thankfully, they've adjusted the cooking style and spices to make it taste as close as possible to the original item.

Beef Fry - Chunks of meat mixed with a thick gravy full of caramalized onions and a handful of spices. Compliments the Kheema well and goes perfectly with the Kerala Paratha or Tandoori Roti.

Beef Chilly - Unlike other restaurants serving Beef Chilly, this one is completely dry (it has some oil ofcourse). Fried strips of meat in a reddish paste garnished with some curry leaves will leave your taste buds wanting for more.

Bheja Fry - Not available at all times, this one is a delight! Again, it's dry so goes perfectly along side a plate of Kheema. The regular Bheja Fry is not spicy at all but for spice lovers, there is a Kolhapuri variant available (not recommended though).

Apart from these 3 highlight dishes, the Beef Biryani, Haleem and Dalcha (available on certain days only) are great. Kerala Parathas and Tandoori Rotis are lovely when served hot. Price wise, you cannot be happier. The bill wont exceed Rs.500 if 2 people overeat here.

Place is usually open till midnight (half shutter down sometimes) and at times, past it as well. Best time to visit is around 10 pm as you're most likely to get Bheja Fry (stock comes in late).

If you love your street food, beef and dont mind a small time restaurant, Shifa is the place to be!

Follow me - Twitter | Instagram | @thedarkrebel
