Review Balu Real Natural Lassi Shop - Varanasi

Olivia Nunn
There are so many lassi shops in Varanasi but Balu is by far the friendliest lassi maker I've met, and his lassies match, if not beat, many of the more well known cafes. Made with fresh buffalo milk yoghurt and fruit, and extremely tasty!

First trying Lassi and we were not disappointed! Balu was very friendly and hospitable and the Lassi was delicious! Stop by and make a friend while having amazing, natural Lassi!

Balu is a very friendly guy who is an expert in making tasty lassies with in season fruits. Everyone seems to go to the Blue Lassi Shop but we visited both and would say that Balus Lassis are more tasty and a better price! We would say this place is definitely worth a visit for anyone who is staying in Varanasi!

Very tasty, creamy lassis. So creamy you cannot drink them. You’ll have to use a spoon to eat them. The price is reasonable, the size a bit small. Highly recommended for lassi connoisseurs.

Balu is so friendly and like any other Indian he likes to talk! Best lassi ever! Tasty, creamy and fresh. Must try.

The full of cream and totally undiluted buffalo milk lassi that you get at Bulu Lassi is simply delicious. Available in many flavours, though a tad pricier, I found it much better than the ones at at bigger and better known one, Blue Lassi. And the guy is very friendly. You have a great cozy place to sit and have the nice conversations.

Balu serves superb buffalo yoghurt lassis in seasonal fruit flavours. In May, when I visited, he had grape (Rs. 70/-), apple (Rs. 80/-) and mixed fruit (Rs. 200/-). Both the apple and the grape were creamy, sweet and delicious! Balu is extremely friendly and chatted to us amicably as we drank, telling us about the history of his store (passed on by his grandfather) and about his daily rituals to stay positive about his sedentary, and I suppose fairly monotonous job. He is a happy soul so they must be working! Also on the menu are "modern" lassis in several strengths and a special cake that I was shown and asked to smell! Although I didnt try these, I would imagine that connoisseurs of a certain plant will be at home here.

A gem place! Tiny cozy shop, right on a narrow street. Lassi is bit more expensive but totally worth it! Yogurt is made of buffalo milk with no water at all, so lassi is pretty thick. Big menu of different flavours. Balu told that us that this lassi shop was started by his grandfather in 1920s exactly on a same spot. Balu's mother helps him, so it's a small family business. We were striked by owners politeness and positivity. He's friendly but not over the top, like majority sellers in Varanasi.

Balu is such a friendly and fun guy. He makes the experience of having a tasty lassi even more enjoyable. He’s the third generation of lassi makers, his family shop has been running for 32 years now. Fair prices and great lassi. It’s a plus that he knows so many languages as well. A must in Varanasi.
