If you don't eat at MTR, you haven't visited Bangalore. No need to look at a menu or arrive just in time for lunch. Wait in line, get a seat and enjoy the special meal! It's the best Indian meal I have ever tasted, hands down. No comparing. MUST HAVE.

The place is also called MTR 1924. A no frills eating joint you must try their Rava Idli and Coffee. After all they are the people who first made Rava Idli. If you are in mood for something sweet try their signature dish-Chandrahara. You can also buy South Indian dry snacks here.

I was new to the city and had been told that this is a legendary outlet which has maintained its taste and quality over the years. I am happy to report that its all true !
I loved the authentic taste of dosa and the basic seating arrangement. It's a good strategy to market it for the food experience rather than ambience, in order to keep the prices under control.

Having food here is really a pleasant experience. Food of this place is awesome and authentic. While having food here you will not feel like a restaurant. The ambience here make you feel like home and that's the best part of it. The only disappointment is the waiting time to get a seat and after that getting the food.

This is the best South Indian place in Bangalore hands down. MTR, or Mavalli Tiffin Rooms, named after the popular neighbourhood in which it is located with Lalbagh a stone's throw away, has been serving lip-smacking food since 1924. They specialise in South Indian cuisine and claim to have invented the rava idli. They also have a trademark dessert ‘Chandrahara’ which is served only on Sundays. Having visitded this place multiple times, we dropped in for a Sunday breakfast.

Bonda Soup: Wait, this is nothing like a tomato soup or a clear veg soup that we know. Bonda soup is a South Indian snack to be eaten. Prepared from the same dough that is used to prepare the crispy uddina vada/ medu vada, but this is in the shape and size of a tennis ball. When served, the bonda is placed in a bowl and the soup poured on top of it. The taste is super yumm and very comforting.

Chandrahara: Made with maida flour deep fried to perfection and topped with a thick, sweet liquid made from khoa (Rabdi). The Chandrahara is MTR’s trademark dessert served only on Sundays. Started during the 1950s and originally called the 'French Sweet', it was renamed to Chandrahara after a movie by the same name running in a cinema hall in Bangalore, Gives the word 'RICH' a whole new meaning!

MTR Masala Dosa: The Dosa, served alongside coconut chutney and sambar, was crispier than ever and was also served with a small amount of ghee on top, which was to be poured above the Dosa. The dosa was perfectly crisp and super tasty.

Rava Masala Dosa: Made to perfection, crisp and super tasty, served alongside coconut chutney and sambar.

The service is quick and the server always in hurry but no-nonsense.

Bon Appétit.

I had been wanting to dine at this place for a very long time. This is just about 1 km from cubbon park and the road is too beautiful, so it becomes a nice walk from there. The place is actually small, though its very old and quite famous. Food is definitely very yummy here. The butter masala dosa tastes really good. The quality of the dosa, the softness and the crispiness, the perfectly balanced potato masala etc takes this a new level. Also, here, the dosa did not have the usual red chutney. It was a green chutney inside the masala dosa which gave it a very unique flavour. The tea was ok, I did not quite enjoy it. Place is too crowded even if its 10.30 am for breakfast. Service was ok, which was understandable with the huge rush. Overall, definitely a place to try the dosa. It is slightly expensive compared to other south indian breakfast places.

The food was excellent. We had dosa and coffee. The dosa has a very crispy crust, something which I like, with thick sambhar and coconut chutney. They even served a little amount of pure desi ghee to go along with dosa. Everything was well cooked and tasty. The decor and furniture were workman like and is cleaned very thoroughy every time customer depart after consuming meal. The place seems to have a steady stream of customers for the nearly 45 minutes that we spent there. Staff were courteous and the food was on the table real quick. The prices are very reasonable, considering the quality that is on offer. The only little hassle we had was with payment of bill. It was after a very long time that we were presented with bill for payment. And maybe they could have better arrangement where you can wash your hands. On the whole a very enjoyable and satisfying experience and one can understand why this place is amongst the top rated restaurants.

This was a traditional place I would not have gone by myself. The dosa was very tasty and the service was efficient. Prices are also traditional (coffee and dosa around 120 rupees). Highly recommended.

We had Masala Dosa, Pudi Dosa and Idli. Their taste was good. What surprised me was that they serve idli and dosa with a tiny bowl of ghee. I think using ghee is their specialty as you can also smell and taste ghee in dosa, as if they have been dipped in ghee. Great taste. Ample seating. Pricing could be reduced compared to other places in Bangalore which serve similar taste at around half the price. We paid 300 Rs for 3 items (masala dosa, pudi dosa, 1 idli), which is decent if you are eating it in northern India but a bit higher in Bangalore. We were very hungry so started eating immediately. Only halfway through it I realised to take a picture. Will update them when I go there again.

We liked this Branch Better than the Inception Branch. Pretty Clean Ambiance, Good Hospitality, Relatively Cleaner Utensils and The Waiter suggested some Items which blew us away. The dosas are made in much better perfection in here. You don't have to wait either, You get seats most times. From Dosas , Bonda Soup , Ravaidli, Karabath, They took time in creating such items which makes this place unique. Ofcourse the moment you enter you can feel the smell of Ghee All over.

Good place to have authentic south indian meals..went there for a sunday breakfast. Loved the idlis, chow chow bath..they give small quantity of ghee to add over idlis and dosa which adds to the taste. Parking is in a complex just next to the MTR building down the lane, which is bit congested. There was small waiting queue for morning breakfast.
