Review Komala Refreshments - Bengaluru

Richard Jones
A decent self service restaurant near entrance of Cox Town flyover. On the main road so cannot be missed. Plenty of parking for two wheelers near the restaurant but for cars a little tough as this place has heavy traffic movement. We were here in a Sunday morning so parking was not a challenge. This is a self service place and was quite crowded on a Sunday morning for breakfast. Tables and chairs there for people to sit and have their food. We ordered for poori, masala dosa and udin vada and all of them was good. Rates are decent and coffee is good. Very simple interiors and ambience. Overall an decent experience. Give it a try ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ

In masala dosa they can reduce the oil, there was too much of oil when I ordered. Sambar is very watery, so we do not get the taste in our mouth when dipped. Vada was good. It's one of the oldest restaurants in Bangalore, they should not compromise on the taste.
purvi vahini
South Indian restaurant good with breakfast and lunch options, Mostly crowded & the hotel gives the old Bangalore feel with typical table and chair sittings.....
Laxmi Selvaraj
Very hygienic n we relish the masala dosa. The new addition kote kadabu is so aromatic n tasty

Safe & clean vegetarian food, budget restaurant, self service, generally busy at all times. Most items get sold out early during the respective meal hours

Ole world charm.... till intact.... Masala dosa.... Signature item.... With music of 70s giving u company especially old Hindi songs.. especially Kishore, Lata. a nice feel to gorge on the masala dosa, rava idli, Manglore Bhajji, Bonda soup and more...Today for a change settled for the poori and allo sagu, huge pooris, the sagu was perfect, a bit of semi gravy kind with some aloo in between, and the liquidish sagu was a pleasure to eat alongside the poori. White chutney was a good accompaniment.. Overall a good experience.. Must go to place.. especially those who like dosas and more..

Neatly maintained hotel, if you want to have a discussion over a coffee this is a good place.... I had dosha idly vada and curd rice.... All items are good... Ground floor is self service and first floor has service hall... Price is also average...

Iโ€™ve been a regular for decades and seen it move from building to another. Three years since I could last visit and itโ€™s absolutely amazing as always. Masala dosa is as good as I remember. The filter coffee and the master who makes it, take a bow. Definitely one of the comfort food places for us regulars.

Just hits all the right spots, yummy bunny do indulge in their poori and Dosas it's to die for. Top it off with the best Filter coffee and it's bliss, Devine!

It's a good place for a quick breakfast. Not much place for sitting but there is good rush of customers and the food is tasty.
SATHYA SP
Yummy food at affordable prices. Well maintained neat and clean. The service and the atmosphere was good. Had masala dosa, rice sambar, curd vada, coffee all the items tasted good.

As usual my coffee is favorite and it is much tryable with hot masala dosa. Do Visit Komala Refreshments.
Harsha Gowda
This hotel , coffee tea and masala dosa puri are the best ... other tiffin stuff are alright...

Nostalgia is all I can say about Komala's... The dosa is the same here as it's been since 30 years... Just loved it... I would say Rameshwaram or CTR or Vidyarthi bavan are just hyped.... Nothing to beat KOMALA'S

Nice miss you sir lovely food

Typical South Indian breakfast cravings spot you would simply love and try all varieties if you go for breakfast early mornings. And after breakfast do sip hot coffee. Great place with very fast service.

No compromise on quality, one of the best restaurants to have South Indian breakfast. Do not miss Bonda Soup ๐Ÿฒ๐Ÿ˜‹

Food 3/5
Ambience 5/5
Pricing (Pocket Friendly)
Service 5/5

Mangalore bajji simply amazing
But lost its old touch of flavour and taste in their meals served could be better. Especially the sambhar is really pathetic and the masala dosa
Tazeen Munnavar
My all time favorite breakfast on an early Sunday morning is the masala dosa at Komala Refreshments. The masala dosa, idly, vada, uddin vada and kesaribath are the best.

If any one in Frazer town or who want to have veg food in Frazer town! This restaurant is very good choice for them! Coz very less number of veg restaurants available in Frazer town๐Ÿ˜

This is my regular restaurant in my visit to Frazer town! Tried almost all types of food there which were really good and reasonable for the price we pay for it!๐Ÿ˜Š

Only thing is servers will not tell what food they have to serve! We have to check from watching others plate!!!๐Ÿ˜‚

So crispy dosa, Bonda or Bajji, Bisibele bath and Rice sambar is more salable items there!! ๐Ÿ˜‹

As earlier said! Restaurant is good for Veg food in Frazer town!!! Over all 4/5๐Ÿค—

Though the quality of the place and food has come down ever since they shifted to the new location. Was just in love with the old komalas. The service was also pretty poor. Food looks pretty impressive, but doesn't taste so.
YASIR ALI
Found a honey bee in the sambar. Did not know how to react to this so we just stopped eating and kept aside the food and decided not to order again from this place. Been eating here since childhood but in the past few years the quality of food has gone down drastically.

A quintessentially Bangalore Dharshini thatโ€™s been around for three and a half decades. Entering into the Dharshini takes one back to the Bangalore of the early 80s, with the same furniture and style of serving, steeped in history. The food is arguably some of the best Karnataka fare available in the city.
Jeffrey Johnson
The food is good but, the place is not very clean. It's is very pocket friendly and provides tasty food. The only problem I had with this restaurant was with its hygiene.
Sree S
the quality of food is certainly below average, I made a trip to this gloomy restaurant based on few exceptional reviews. I was served ice cold idlies followed by pathetic puris despite my request for hot puris.
Hari Ram
This place has been around for ages. Always visit this place when Iโ€™m in the area. The dosas are to die for. Food is value for money. My only issue is the lack of parking
Anoop Bhat
Favourite darshini in town. They make the best khara bhaath, mangalore buns and goli baje in at least the northern Bangalore. Food is full of flavour, cooked to perfection and always fresh. Prices are super reasonable and service is quick. It's quite packed during weekends, so try and go early. All the good stuff usually runs out by 10:00. Highly recommend it for an early morning belting.
Salman Khan
Great South Indian Veg food! The Masala Dosa and coffee is all time favorite here, super crowded on weekends breakfast time, the staff and their service was quick. Car parking is bit of challenge in the morning and the restaurant is very close to signal so need to look for parking beforehand itself.
Shatabdi Haldar
Tried Cox town for a Sunday morning simple breakfast as Dad was ok travelling a bit far ;) So ordered Idli-vada, Masala dosa, poori sabzi and coffee... Decent taste and good food... However they can add up few more things to the menu...

If you love Mysore masala dosa as much as I do, I insist that you need to try Komala restaurant's version of it. This cafe which has been around since the 1920s is aย Bangalore institution and is surely one of the places to try when you are in the Garden city. Of course expect a no frills, very toned down cafeteria style set up where the seats crack and the service is non existent. But what you can expect is quick service and lip smacking food.ย

Wash down that spicy Mysore masala dosa and a sambhar vada (which also comes highly recommended) with their famous filter coffee and you are in for a treat of a lifetime. Have you tried it yet? Komala restaurant is closed on Mondays.

Ok, I must say one of the best Classic Old School Masala Dosas at this Place. I'd Give a 10 if possible. The Dosas and Idly and Sambar Chuttneys are Unique to this Place Alone. Double Thumbs Up! ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป
Jeyaprabhakar Ayyappan
Good place for vegan's and temporarily they shifted little and you can see this restaurant in the first floor of the juice shop nearby. Not recommended for party or special occasions
ArJun Prakash
I'm not a great fan of their dosas... But poori is amazing... Must try... Komala even serves sweets that are pocket friendly... The old junction was so magnificent in which the ambience was so old that marks the city's 90s presence...
Hangry
Great masala dosa. One of the few darshinis where I can still get my bisibele bath fix makes this pretty much one of my favorite darshinis in the area. The coffee is great too. Komala Refreshments for the win.

Its been a long time since I have been to this restaurant but I can still recollect the tasty Masala dosa offered at this place. A decent small restaurant crowded by the south Indian food lovers, located at a corner near Cox town.ย

I have tasted the Masala dosa and the bonda soup at this place and one of the best I have tasted.Heaven! I am eagerly waiting to go back to this place with my parents to relish the food.ย

Their sweet stall beside the restaurant offers great sweet dishes and among them Dry jamoon and Savoury Kaju is to die for. Quality and hygiene is decent.

So here's the rating for this place:

Food and taste - 4/5
Ambiance - 4/5 (for the rustic look)
Service - 4/5 ย Quick
Value for money - 4.5/5

Going there soon...

Favourite place for breakfast. Dad used to take us here since when we were kida as it was close to my place.

The waiters might look all serious, but they are real sweet people, and the owner as well. Decent, neat food. That you'd really enjoy. The Masala Dosa, bonda soup, vada soaked in Sambar, puri and sagu are my personal favourites. The anna saaru in the afternoon with bonda is just so cheap to full your tummy. The bonda soup in the evening is just yum.

The parking might be a constraint. As they have now shifted the place from opposite to gymkhana to another place. The restaurant is now shifted to 3 building away.

Its a place for quick bite. And legendary morning breakfast.
Pavan V Gowda
The restaurant has been shifted to the adjacent building as they are renovating the old building. In the ground floor you get North Indian food and there is a service hall in the first floor which serves good and cheap South Indian food. It goes very easy on your pocket as the prices are very cheap.

This is a much overdue review that should've gone up years ago. The only reason I'm led to write this now is because I was shocked and saddened to see this "legendary" hotel deteriorate over the last 15 years.

I have tons of fond memories in Komala with family and friends - pulao with croutons for breakfast on Sundays, bonda soup as an after-school treat and masala dosa weekend breakfasts with a huge group of friends.

In order to relive a few of these cherished memories, we ventured here on a weekday for a quick breakfast before going to college. We ordered a plate of puri and sagu and a masala dosa. Only one of the three pooris was puffy and the masala dosa was heavy and oily. The thick chutney and viscous sagu of yesteryears was but a watery excuse for it. So disappointing. AND there was a bug in the glass of water. When we told the waiter, he waved it off as though it happens regularly.

I heard this place is shutting it's doors and moving to a different location after all these decades. Maybe they'll restore themselves to their former glory when they reopen.

One of my favourite places for breakfast. I drop by every sunday. Love this. In the neighbourhood probably the best place to have south indian breakfast. The staff is also very helpful and service is quick. Love this place. Their coffee is a must have.
Radhika Timbadia
Great pooris, dosas, vadas and coffee. I like to go here at least 5 times a month. Old place with tables that are not plastic with nice waiters in a uniform from the past.
Sunith Shyam
Drop by this restaurant by chance. I was early for a meeting and came across this place crowded to the brim at 8.00 am in the morning. I knew immediately that the food had to be good. Went in and shared a table with an old gentleman. The ambience isnt much to speak of. Very old school vintage feel in the lines of indian coffee house n koshys with the waiters donning smart white uniforms. I ordered a masala dosa and a filter coffee. The masala dosa was really good and the accompanying coconut chutney reminded me of home. The coffee was one of the best in bangalore. All in all a good breakfast!!
DInakar Reddy
The famous and legendary Komala joint is one of those joints which has not lost its flavour and taste With time. The moment you enter u will get the typical mangalore sambar smell. Ghee masala Dosas and coffees are the best. You wud also try their sweets and mainly Chandrakala... ๐Ÿ˜€...

But

Pathetic Service and arrogant management
Shruthi Katagi
Yummy crispy masala dosa with the typical South Indian sambar i.e exactly the way we Bangaloreans like it ๐Ÿ˜œ The same ambience like the vidyarthi Bhavan. Followed by a strong filter coffee. What a relief after a hectic day at work.
Abi
A nice little rustic restaurant tucked behind a tree besides a busy signal which you would miss if you weren't intentionally looking for it. It has "that been here for long time" look. And I think it's very old and it has that charm like that of Koshys and old Indian coffee houses. The rava idllies were really good and badam milk was also good. A nice little place for some satisfying Kanadiga food.
Kabyashreep
Good food.
Sambar is mildly sweet but tasty.
You will always find rush there either to get a seat or forvtake away. .

Service is very fast.

Komala is in the neighbourhood where we used to stay (Cox Town). If I can remember right, we were regulars since the 1980s. It has not changed one bit from what I can recollect. However, being a food joint, it has served the best South Indian cuisine be it, Dosas, Idly's, Vadas or Pongals. Of course not to forget the famed coffee. Went there in April 2015 and gorged on the ubiquitous Masala Dosa. Took some photos and memories back. A must visit place in spite of it being lodged in the same building since ages. May be, the dingy look is an USP to maintain its old world charm and custom. Service, Food and Pricing are a pull. When in Bangalore head to this place for authentic South Indian refreshments. My dad even knows the timings of the place by heart. So much for their client centric business. God bless Komala.
Neeraj
Komala is a Landmark.
I believe it must' be the oldest establishment around this area.
Pls expect to share the table with fellow foodies if you decide to eat In.
Take away is best option.
Decades have not been able to change the Quality of Coffee, Dosa, BBB, Idlys etc etc.
Great for Take always.
Prayag Arun
Worst place on earth. Absolute no respect to people. A small kid who sells stickers was not allowed entry even though i told personally will pay for it. These guys have no regards for people. He even threatened to beat the child with a wooden stick before a few of us intervened. On repeated attempts to coax him saying the child is as human as he is, he would not let the child in saying "Beggars outside". Zomato I urge you to please de-list this inhuman and unethical restaurant who does not believe in HUMANITY!!!
Giri
As far I remember I 've been eating in this hotel right from school days... All items r reasonable.. my fav special Masala Dosa and Vada nothing has changed Over the years , same taste , warm n humble waiters...
Tanmay Amar
The food is excellent, loved the special (butter) masala dosa, which was rich and heavy, and completely worth it. The vadas were fresh and warm, the poori aloo was pretty good too. All reasonably priced.

The place itself is pretty rundown and has a worn out ambience. The staff is brusque and busy, not bothered much with pleasantries, which was on expected lines, based on experience of similar establishments. There is some parking in front and on the side.
Avinash Chandrasekaran
Best masala dosa you can have east of Bangalore .. Special masala is simple awesome ..been eating here since I was little .. Must try for sure .
Ranjit Jose
Old world charm maintained well. The best mini vadas and khara bath in this part of town. Coffee sometimes is amiss. Friendly neighborhood joint if you enjoy your early morning or early evening snacks.

Been to this place with colleagues from office for breakfast. Awesome Steamy ย Idlis and crispy Vada. Mini coffee is must try! Place is quite crowded though!

I went here with my friends when we were very new in Bangalore. Very good Dosas and south Indian dishes. The rice items also good. The waiters have a smart uniform there to mention.
Ajay
One of the best darshinis in this part of town. Komala has been my fav destination for breakfast, especially when Im in a mood for a masala dosa and filter coffee. They even have car service, ie. They bring your order to you car!!
Asad Chaturvedi
Breakfast on a Sunday morning at Komala is a ritual that we indulge in at least once a month and it never disappoints us.

Be it the vadas and dosas or the puris with accompaniments you will always leave with a satisfied look on your face and a similar feeling in your belly.

Don't forget to finish your breakfast with a cup of their amazing coffee served in the traditional style of steel glass in a steel bowl.

Pocket friendly and highly recommended.

Cheers,
Reuben Dilip Chelliah
The best place in Frazer town for breakfast. Period.
The bhajjis in the evening along with a steaming cup of filter coffee are lip smacking. This is the most economical place in Frazer town, too.

Nothing has been Changed from Ages in this place.. Neither the Interiors, Staff, Quality, Quantity..

Masala Dosa's , Pongal, wow!!!! nothing can beat for the price what they are offering for...

People waiting to get a seat and nice old style Tables makes it feel nostalgic Bangalore...

VALUE for Money ,, Pocket friendly, Neat and decent food with no Soda. keeps u light on your tummy and pocket..

A Good Darshini maintained from Ages..

Komala and Sharada Lunch home were the only two restaurants that cox town had for a long time , very long time. Komala was easily the best and yes the prices were really low until recently. The place has changed a lot over time but has still managed to keep the "Old Bangalore" charm. Masala Dosa is their best on the menu followed by chow chow bath, don't miss out on these, honestly with prices like that you could have everything on the menu on still not spend more than 450-500 bucks. not a place to go for lunch cos there's nothing really for lunch, the only menu is a breakfast menu !! not that I'd die to eat lunch there but that menu has been the same for about 20 years now and changing the menu would leave Komala not so Komala, wouldn't it !!
Grubster
Probably the oldest South Indian fast food in the locality ! Must try the vada here with coffee! They used to have prehistoric prices until they changed it recently. Must try if your in the area for breakfast or tea time .
#bellyman
One of the oldest South Indian restaurant in Bangalore. Special masala dosa is heavenly. It's known for its bonda soup in the evening (must try). My everyday tea is at this place. The menu isn't to big but whatever they make its the best. So guys try it out :) #dosa
Waste of money.
Too expensive.
Amazing dosas, vadas and idlis. The best coffee. Love it.

komala is the place to go for when you want a leisurely breakfast.
i lived in cox town for a couple of years, and on a lazy saturday we would head to komala for breakfast at around 11.
since they had car service then, a blast of the horn would bring a waiter whose hair was always loaded with cocunut oil and impeccably combed.
i would start and end with a coffee, one of the best south indian filter coffees i have had.
then the vadas, ah the vadas, so crunchy and delicious, with just the right amount of spice from the pepper and cocnut flakes. and yes... crunchy
then on to the dosa which was always done perfect, the dosa cooked just to the right amout of brown and the potato filling going perfectly with the dosa and sambhar.
there are days when i miss cox town, and the biggest reason is that i cant have a breakfast here any more.

Its in heart of Fraser town' I have been visiting the hotel for all mos 15 years but the taste is the same, I have seen this place and its never changed with to,e like not the a
Sukhsagar, 'Adigas ,shanti sagar did this place is good for breakfast with brilliant coffee after a long workout at Stev gym or gymkhana club' which are attached to this location.

Typical south indian place!!
Nower in closeby such quality best suitable for south indians!!
Best hangout for families! !
Has a very good repute
Anand Krishnan
Very good place for tasty food , not for the diet conscious though. Would be even better if not for the snotty and obnoxious behavior of the owner towards takeaway customers . I for one have been turned off by him and would never go there again even though it's a 100mtrs from my place .
Vinay
Komala is a no-nonsense, value for money outlet offering South Indian fare like Dosa, Idly Vada, Bajji's, Rava idly, Poori, Bread items, etc. I've beein visiting the restaurant since the late 1980's when i was schooling in the vicinity. The seating is minimal - you normally have to jostle for a table or share a table during peak hours, the service is attentive and quick, food is tasty and friendly on the pocket and the coffee is fabulous. Parking is usally available in front or beside the hotel. Adjoining the restaurant is Komala Sweets which sells limited quantities of items like Mysore Pak, Chandrakala, Badusha, Jhangri, Soanpapdi and Peda. The supplies of some of these items can get over pretty fast, especially during festivals! The khara mixture is also a must-try!
Sreya V
Don't expect fancy-shwancy stuff here. This is the heart of all good things that are 'South Indian'.

Purely a delight, if you can ignore all the ghee that goes in to the making. Personally, I'd take that as a big yes for food made with lots of love, in this case, ghee is love for me.

Things to try here are -
1. Masala dosa
2. Idli vada
3. Puri and aloo curry.

They may be usual items, but you have to try these out at Komala Refreshments, and they're really good at t what they make. They've been around for ages!

Simple, down-to-earth, south Indian food. :)
Manjunath Chikkars
Komala is one of the oldest Indian restaurants in the Frazer town area. It has been around for a few decades, and it used to be the only restaurant before Frazer town became what it is today, i.e. with close to 100 eating places within a radius of 3 sq km. It is located at the very busy junction where the cox town flyover descends and intersects with 3 other major roads.

You can tell by looking at the building from outside itself that its from a different era. The ambience inside is simple and clean, with typical wooden tables & chairs. Parking is not a problem because they have ample space outside the restaurant which can accommodate at least 4-5 cars.

The food served is a combination South Indian, North Indian, Chats & Indo-Chinese. The south Indian items are their specialities, and among them the Dosas and Goli Bajje are highly recommended. The Komala sweet shop is attached to the restaurant which is also pretty well known for its delicious sweets. Jahangir & Chandrakala are the recommended sweets to try.

This restaurant offers very good value of money, given that its clean, easily accessible, serves some very tasty and well prepared food for reasonable prices.

Recommended for breakfast, if you are in the neighbourhood. Please note that they might be closed on Mondays for cleaning.
