Review S G Rao's Military Hotel - Bengaluru

Achal N Murthy
Decent place, nothing extra, nothing less. We visited this place on a weekday in the evening when it was raining, so the restaurant was empty and the food tasted extra delicious. The biriyani is no doubt absolutely amazing if you're into the typical naati style biriyani. The service time is pretty fast, and there's a wide range of menu items. The biryani is served in leaves which really adds to the whole experience. Moreover, the prices are extremely reasonable and worth it. The ambience is average, and the place is clean. The approach is difficult in cars, but easy on two wheelers. Walkable distance from the nearest metro.

Delicious non-veg dishes, diverse menu, great quality, and friendly service. Highly recommended for meat lovers!

I would say this is one such old iconic place . Yes biryani is good, tastes good and so light. Isn’t full of masala so feels good. I tasted chicken biryani, it’s 190 bucks and the quantity was good for that price. Pepper chicken tasted just ok ok nothing great. The only thing is reaching this place. Do not go here in car. Prefer bike and do not get irritated with the traffic. Roads to reach here are terrible. Over all a pleasant experience

Best place to visit for lunch or brunch.. The paluo is awesome and easily one can trust the food and have with no any worry about tasting powder or unhygienic I have personally been here twice and tasted the food it’s awesome and only concern is it’s at a peak area opposite road of police station. Road is always crowded and no place for parking car. Best is to go in bike or take a metro From metro station they charge minimum auto fare to this place Families are also welcomed

SG Rao's Military Hotel is almost 100 years old. We were hyped after seeing the youtube videos. We visited the place and ordered the soup which was okay ( salt was low ), then we ordered the chicken and mutton palav which were great with korma then the sides which were chilly chicken, mutton chops, mutton keema balls, their special chicken and mutton dishes. The sides were amazing. So overall the food and service was great and it opens at 6 AM so go early or you might have to wait in line.

Found dead cockroach in the food. Please maintain hygiene in the hotel.

Had been here once.. as its a famous place..
Tried plain-pulav served with sharwa , which was good..

The mutton leg soup was quite good.. (am not an ideal person who can review mutton soups as I have limited experience on the same )
The mutton-udayagiri fry was par excellence ..

Must visit place for anyone who loves mutton dishes..

Will try other mutton dishes later and review the same ..

Thanks and regards,
Hemanth

One of the legendary places in Bangalore. Having a history of 110 odd years serving biriyani.
I had been to this place on a Sunday morning, yes morning. As they serve their biriyani staring at about 6 in morning.

Tried the mutton dum biriyani, chicken biriyani, paya soup or kaal soup, chicken pepper and idly.
Really loved the piping hot paya soup here.

Mutton biriyani and chicken biriyani both had pretty much the same taste apparently as it's same masala used. Only the meat rendered taste was a difference.

Idly was piping hot and soft. Chicken pepper roast with idly worked magic in the pallete.

Waiting to go again with a gang of friends for a biriyani breakfast here.

It’s an average place that is over rated . I went for lunch , the place was empty , Biryani was bland and chicken fry was too much laden with spices and oil etc . The preparation lacked the balance of spices that Shivaji military hotel exhibits
For me a good place is where I want to visit again and again , this could not make the list !
Varun M
Mutton biryani was tasting good, paaya soup was not that as good as expected, pepper chicken was also good.
Mutton biryani - 8/10
Paaya soup - 5.5/10
Pepper chicken - 6.5/10

One of the least oily biriyanis I've every tasted. You don't feel a bloat, you can eat 2 in fact!! Their biriyanis are to die for. That parathas are hot and soft and a must try here along with chops! Overall clean, the feel of eating on dried leaves makes it certainly memorable.

100+ year old legendary military hotel of namma bengaluru. Sure the taste has gone down over the years tells over serious biryani enthusiasts but early morning piping hot biryani with mutton chops, chicken fry, mutton kheema balls and paaya soup is a magic to the palates and this one still a must try place for everyone in Bangalore and comes to Bangalore. The experience is always the next level.
This place was there on my to try list for some time. Today I got the opportunity and time to check the place out. This place was established on 1908. We went here for lunch, it’s a small outlet with basic setup. Which offers a lot of varieties. We tried their mutton pulav, khali pulav, mutton fry and pepper chicken. Firstly the fragrance of the food when served is one of its type experience here. The taste and perfect ratio of spices and the quantity of mutton in the pulav is precise. The ultimate winner among the dishes was the pepper chicken. It was rich in pepper unlike other places. It is priced to perfection. The place is a must visit for all those who want to know the actual taste of the food.

Went there with lot of expectation. I personally didn’t like that much. Quality of food is good, but the taste didn’t meet my expectations. The place was full and service was good.

Located in the bylanes near KR market.. Gps comes handy in locating the place. They serve biryani as early as 6 in the morning. Mutton biryani, kaima balls & mutton fry are best sellers along with leg soup. Gulp the awesome food with soft drinks and you are good to go. Taste is really good. The place is clean and that is the beauty of such local small places here..they dont compromise on hygiene and serve good food at such cheap rates. Thumbs up!!

This places lives up to its reputation for one of the best military hotels in Karnataka since 1908. Full marks for their mutton Palav and chicken fry and gravy. The leg soup is also a must try at this place.
Super friendly staff. The ambience is pretty basic but the taste compensates for that.
I feel one can avoid mutton kheema.

SG Rao Military Hotel is a legendary place famous for their Pulavs. Located amidst the super narrow and congested by lanes of Sultanpet, this legendary outlet is over 110 years old. The place is a popular breakfast hub and they start serving the Pulavs from as early as 6 am in the morning. Trust me, it's super crowded even in the mornings. We tried the MUTTON PULAV, CHICKEN PULAV, MUTTON FRY, CHICKEN PEPPER & GREEN CHICKEN. We got boiled eggs for an added 10 bucks each. The place is dirt cheap, we paid 800/- for this lipsmacking meal. Although am an ardent Kolkata Biriyani loyalist, of late I have really started to like the Biriyani and Pulavs at the Military Hotels in Bangalore. I agree that hygeine might be a concern for some people when it comes to the military hotels but believe me I have gotten a glimpse of their kitchen and it's very well maintained. Would love to come back again for the Mutton Chops and Pulav.

Great place to satitae your morning mutton pulav craving.

I have visited this place couple of time. Simply loved their biriyani . Well cooked rice , hot stew (complimentary) , succulent mutton pieces .

I loved their mutton and chicken fry.

This 110 year old shop opens at 6 o clock in the morning. Yes you get it right. 6am . And you get everything. Starting from Biryani , leg soup to idly ,mutton fry.

Must try place for all nati style biriyani lovers.

Some of the articles that lists the military hotels in Bangalore indicate that SG Rao Military and Sri Govind Rao Military, both on the same road, have same ownership. But the taste to me seemed quite different. Sri Govind Rao was one of the first places I tried during my try the early morning biryani at all legendary military hotels phase and SG Rao was the last.

If you are in that kind of exploratory phase, you should try out SG Rao too but I found it not a great experience. That main cottonpet road gets increasingly dirty as you walk from the start of this one way road till SG Rao which is further along the road. From outside the restaurant looks neat enough. But inside does not feel very hygienic (though it looks ok superficially and in the attached pic), not sure if it is because we went too early.

Had ordered the leg soup and the mutton biryani. Leg soup was average but the biryani was without soul. Literally no taste of spice (both spice taste and hotness factor), it was just yellow slightly thick rice (not the small/jeera sambha rice) mush. Quantity was ok but the look and the taste was not appealing. It’s possible that the mutton sides may be good here; the biryani was not up to scratch. And so we did not want to try any sides. The taste of biryani put both of us (me and my friend) off that it cured me of my newly acquired biryani love for a while.

The effort of taking a metro very early in the morning and walking there was not worth it for us.

One of the places that serves piping hot mutton pulao at 6 AM. Love that aspect of it. Best eaten hot, hot right at the place. One portion serves two and they have all the assorted military hotel items that go with it like chaaps and kheema. The pulao was ok and not the kind where I want to repeat it again for dinner.

Video at FB.com/bakefudgylove

One of the famous hotel to get some awesome biryani. This is an very old hotel which is famous for its tasty biryani. The main thing about this restaurant is the taste comes from the rice which is loaded with spices.

1908 it started and still going great.

Definitely try this hotel to get some amazing biryani.

Not that good as been hippied. I had only biryani rice it was not that great after seeing in Zomato I just searched for this outlet for hours together even though it is in such uncleanliness locality they have maintained ok .

I wouldn’t miss to write about this place. Anyway, these guys aren’t those ones who needed advertisement nor promotion cuz they already got much people who know that they got . I got to know about the place from a friend of mine who got much to appreciate about the food they serve. In reality, his words came out to be true. If you really wanna have the best of the food visit early morning. We being here at 5 30 am and yes please ignore the location . You’re going their the good good and full justice. We got served first with smoking hot mutton pulav along with mutton kheema balls and chicken fry . The service was quick enough and they ensure complete plastic free in there. The rice was week cooked , mutton was tender, yummy and whatnot. I totally enjoyed every bit. The sherwa is toppin the game in the end we’d one idli and soup . All in all 100% satisfied customer.

WASTE OF TIME place. I had chicken pulao which was equal to eating plain white rice, ordinary gravy, chicken fry was just okay. Service is so bad that you have push yourself through the crowd & find a seat, then find a waiter, then clean the tables yourself (joking about the last part). Ambience is slum-like outside & inside with papers all over the floor. Don't be fooled by the crowds, just drive past this pjace
Uday
Wow this place hmmmmm let me guess I’m not sure why it is so crowded what’s the fuss about... taste average ambience average service below average cleanliness ok not too bad..... chicken pulav is not it’s best Kima and all gravy look the same taste the same. No unique taste on the plate or to your pallet. You can give it a miss

Went with a group of 8 on a Sunday morning for breakfast. Too long wait - around 45 mins. Many will be waiting in a messy queue. Tried their chicken pulav, mutton pulav, chicken fry and kaima balls. Chicken pulav and mutton pulav were just above average, nothing great. Kaima was okayish. Chicken fry is avoidable. Nothing too special about this place.
Vikas
Awsome piping hot biryani early in the morning can never be more delightful than this place. The choice of spices the aroma and the taste will just take you awestruck. The add on chicken varieties cooked with no colour additives and just pure spices keeps your tongue clicking and lips smacking. Must visit place in Bangalore.

Been there last Thursday. It's like every other military hotel. But, the quantity is more when compared to the other restaurants. The chicken pieces were more when compared to other restaurants. Chicken biriyani tasted good. Pepper chicken is not that dry, but tasted very good. A must visit place. I'm yet to try the breakfast items which I will do in my next visit.

Best morning biryani ever and idlis are also soft and chilli chicken and pepper chicken are just mouth watering can't wait to visit again...
