Review Ratna Cafe - Chennai (Madras)

If you're a tourist in Chennai, find the nearest Ratna Cafe and have the idli sambar. I eat here every time I'm in chennai. And so, on a clear and cool Sunday morning in the August of 2023, I found myself automatically searching for this branch of the Ratna cafe after a pleasant visit to the nearby mylapore temple. The idli sambar here is simply the best. Their sambar has a unique flavour and texture that I have not found anywhere else. The fact that it's unlimited is a real bonus. I also tried the poori masala, filter coffee, and the basundi. They were all also tasty but not as great as the idly sambar and I'd rather recommend the filter coffee at Adyar Ananda Bhavan (A2B).

The place is located next to Kapaleeshwar temple and quite famous in locality. The parking will always be a issue due to busy street of temple . The staff was quick to take order and serve the same. This place is for aunthentic south Indian tiffen items and good for snacking or breakfast. The food is good but can be much better . The place is pocket friendly and they have branches all over Chennai and if i m not wrong the Triplicane branch being their oldest and comes under legendary outlets . Over all its a good place to try some South Indian delicacies

Had our breakfast in this famous restaurant and it was very good. The restaurant is near empty when we went. The lady server attended our table was very polite and humble. The sambar Idly we ordered was served with the sambar poured over the Idli. In the middle of service, we ordered with another male staff who didn't understood the order propely brought something different. The girl apologized to us. However it wasn't a big deal as we are ok with the food and we like that too. Quality of food is good. Not much spicy. Average 200 rupees for 1 person. They don't have enough parking space and the security is very polite too. Our bikes were parked neatly by him. Thanks.

Completely loved the Idli Vada dip, taste was too good and the way they keep refilling Sambhar was really nice. Also the coffee was amazing. Also tried ghee paper roast, didn't like that much and also the cost was a little too much for that.

I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at Ratna Cafe. The cozy atmosphere, paired with delicious offerings, made it a delightful visit. The service was prompt, and the staff's friendly demeanor added to the overall positive impression. I highly recommend Ratna Cafe for a great dining experience.

My second visit and go place after kapaleeswar temple for breakfast. Went in at 7 am and had idli with sambhar, masala dosa and filter coffee. Idlis were good, sambhar was alright but like the way they pour it on the idli. Masala dosa was decent as usual. Sambhar is ok but you get better sambhar in other restaurants. Filter coffee was good. Nothing can beat traditional south indian food.

I recently visited Ratna Cafe in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, and it was an exceptional experience! The coffee was aromatic and rich, the idli was soft and flavorful, and the chole bhature was absolutely delightful. The cozy ambiance and friendly staff added to the overall charm. A must-visit for anyone craving delicious South Indian and North Indian delights. A solid 5-star rating!

I went for a trip with my friends to Tamilnadu. We visited Ratna cafe to have our breakfast. I ate idli sambar, it was so delicious. At last we had rasmalai and Gulab jamun, it was great.

Went to this Ratna cafe outlet on a Saturday evening around 7:15-7:30 pm for dinner...Was a little surprised to find seats due to the rush outside in South & North Mada street...The options for Saturday evening was good across North Indian and South Indian items...We had Poori masala which was good and masala was tasty...The chola poori was small compared to other restaurants but taste wise was fine...Idiyappam, Appam, Kuzhi paniyaram (Kara paniyaram/Appam) are wonderful and must try here...Mini coffee was a little more than the mini...cost wise this restaurant charges you average/ and not too high which is decent enough

If you ever come to Chennai visit this place . Once I visited here they served me well and the food quality was awesome I would love to recommend this for the people who loves south Indian dishes

I have been in to this place when I'm staying at Chennai, The food served by them is very good and they are customer friendly.Must try item here is Sambar Idly, The taste of Sambar here is amazing.

I consider myself lucky that I had eat at this restaurant, I'd come here to visit and went to restaurants in the surrounding area but the food here was really very good and the service here is also really good. Thank you Ratna cafe!! 😊❤️

Its famous for sambar and idly. The Samar is the trade dish here. Tiffin sambar is good different taste. Try atleast once for good taste.
Ajit Induchudan
One of Chennai’s favourite joints for vegetarian south indian food. The recommended dishes here is their sambar vada and how they pour sambar from a jug (now replaced by a vessel).

Personal feedback, not my most favourite but would love to keep going back once in a while.

Parking could be a hassle and attracts lot of crowd on weekends for breakfast.

Simple and modest dining ambience and inexpensive.

Not as good as Triplicane!

I would like to give a quick review.

Quality : 3/5
Quantity: 4/5 Sufficient.

Taste: 2/5, Flavours are blatant and subtle.

Cost: 3/5, Really not worth it !!!

Ambiance and serving : 4/5.

The food lacked the punch. Sambar had very less flavour.

Overall: A decent one, and i wouldn't recommend. Triplicane branch is worth the money.

Adding pictures,

Regards,
Sairam.

Went to this place after a long time wait to taste the very greatly said stuff about the place which is their sambar....Who ever who knows about Chennai will say Ratna Cafe Sambar is the best...I also heard this thing and wanted to try it but couldn't go several times and I finally accomplished....Their service was too good have never seen such great service in the past few months...In ordered Sambar Idli and Ghee Masala Dosa....Sambar Idli was very soft and moderately hot....Their ghee masala dosa doesn't even require any sides...It's too good...Now about the most greatly spoken sambar....It consist of Small onions and dal and it was grinded with coconut to give a special taste....It was one of the best sambar I ever had...But I would have told it's the only one if it had been more hot...Ratna Cafe Sambar is GOAT

Ratna cafe mylapore is a popular name for authentic south Indian Tiffin. It's very close to the kapaleeshwarar temple. I had Spl dosa, Ghee podi idly and mini coffee. The dosa was barely hot. The sides were good. The ghee podi idly was amazing but the price was exorbitant! It was priced at 75 bucks excluding GST. There's nothing special about the ambience or portion size to justify this. That's the only point why I'm giving 3 on 5. The coffee was decent. The staff were busy but courteous when interacted. Overall I wouldn't consider this as a go-to spot for Tiffin, purely on basis of the rates.

Went for dinner with family and tried the Iconic sambar idli, Puri , set dosai , dhai vada and filter coffee.........The iconic Sambar idli worth every bit of the hype ...... The place which make you feel as if idli is the side dish to the sambar...... The best sambar you could ever taste in Chennai..... Every item was tasty.... Only draw back is the lack of parking space....
Nishakujur
Overpriced and average taste. I went to the cafe as its famous and one of the oldest cafe in Chennai. May be my expectations were high, found the food to be just average and not up to the mark.
Ambikesh G
The coconut chutney was spoilt .....
Otherwise dosa sambar idli and mint chutney were good
I would recommend the food outlet Ratna Cafe to take this to a positive notice and change their serving style and cooking frequency for the chutney preparation strategy adopted by the outlet
Shanmathi
Went here for their idli sambar😋 50 bucks and such a drooling breakfast. The sambar was piping hot and so yum! Loved it. The vadai was too good, crispy and tasty. A must try place in Mylapore!📍

Ratna cafe is known for their Hot Sambar and Idlies. Really Loved every bite of Idly Sambar. Rose Milk was Average.

4)Medhu Vada:南印度甜甜圈(其实是咸味)搭配酱汁,感觉像中国的面窝窝。
5)Chola Poori:鹰嘴豆咖喱配空心大饼,这道菜源于旁遮普、遍布于全印度、并不只属于泰米尔,但他家做得实在太香了!连续两份都被大家瞬间抢光。
6)Rose Milk:

Drooling over sambar?

Any south Indian could relate to breakfast at home never completing without sambar.

Ratna cafe is a legacy.

How can I skip visiting ratna cafe? That too when they have opened an outlet at walkable distance from my place.

Took my parents and enjoyed their spread. Anything with their sambar. Ghee mini 14 idly or sambar idly? Paniyaram or Stuffed dosa?

Each dish competing with each other and its difficult to choose your favourite.

Quick service. Quality food. Price reasonable.

Anytime and everytime for my family.

#Happyfooding
The food was completely unexpected. It was bland n tasteless. Not the usual limited madras meals. Truly dissatisfying taste. Requires a quick food revamp
Padmapriya
Good South Indian food.
Would highly recommend Pongal and dosas.
Tasty Sambar.
Quick online delivery.
Supposedly the filter coffee is tasty ...
Have not visited the place yet.

On a fine evening when Mylapore called us for a filter coffee, we wanted to visit one of the authentic places for it around!!
Ordered filter coffee, I'm a hater of coffee but I loved it here , strong and perfect and enjoyed every sip!!
Sambar vada with its traditional taste was mind blowing, loved it totally! Wow to this sambhar!!
Curd vada was kinda okay!!
Should visit this place once again for its sambhar idly which is the trademark of it!!
Food Panda'rum
Suda suda idly sambar kinda mornings😋
In the frame : Idly sambar with medhu vadai
Idly sambar - 48.INR
Medhu Vadai - 30.INR
For authentic South Indian breakfast ratna cafe is a must!!!
Kartik Sarma (Kary)
Simple place in Mylapore to have South Indian food. Ambiance is goo and neat. Service was quick and staff were good enough. Parking for a four wheeler is problem. Must tries are Sambar Vada, Rava Masala Dosa and Filter coffee.
Bhuvan
A nice simple place to have some good south indian food.

The quality and taste of the food here is good and up to the level.

The food here is very light and you wont get saturated.

However they have a usual list of south indian menu which we often find is most restaurants.

This is a must visit palace if you are a Sambhar lover like me, the sambar here is just out of the world.

My picks : Sambar vada, Sambar idli and filter coffee.
Sugan
We were returning from trade fair, not that hungry, decided to have something light. Having heard so much about Ratna Cafe's sambar and idly, decided to try it and went with this option. This place is easy to locate. Near vasantha bhavan hotel. Parking of 4 wheelers is an issue.

Ambiance is simple and decent. It was almost full when we went. Very noisy due to crowd. Ordered 2 plates of idly for 2 of us. One filled with sambar and another one in cup. Both of us felt idly and sambar is pretty average. Not worth to the hype. Service is decent.

Pricing is slightly on higher side. Rs.50/- plus for one plate of average idly is not worthy for me. Would give at best 2.5 for this place, since 0.5 not permitted in Zomato, giving 2.

Not very sure why the kilpauk branch didn't stand up to the quality present here. This place is just wow they have not compromised on quality for a long time now. Best sambar idli place in chennai. And the moru moru vada is beyond doubt the best piece you can bite into. Cost is also very nominal.
Satya Narayan Chaudhury
Food was Somewhat OK, but Quantity wise, it's so less. Never experienced such small package for lunch. If you increase Little quantity, it'd be nice
Anil
Worst packing I have seen ordered 2 plates they gave only one parcel for two and no spoon nothing worst
People will fall in love with tis sambar! They are well known for their sambar! their staffs are very much friendly! Their coffee was also loving!

Being a fan of their Triplicane branch one evening around 7ish entered this place with kids... Few tables were free..
Ordered their famous sambar idli and sambar vadai...
Kids loved the sambar vadai....
Then ghee roast was good but felt the size is small for the amount they charged....
Kuzhi paniyaram was ok only...felt like made of big Rawa...
And Didn't like their Jamun - the last 1 star reduced for this...
Service was good - place is neat
Will recommend and will go again but stick with what we wanted...
Aish .J
Soft like cotton ball idlies and overwhelming sambar takes your taste buds to the next level. This was in my wish list for a long time and today I just ticked it off..

Must try Rasam vadai. It's amazingggg.
We ordered medhu vadai, idly sambar, Rasam vadai and the taste is mind blowing. Little costly for two idly but worth it.
Bon_vivant Foodie
Ratna cafe is predominantly meant for idly sambar. I tried their idly sambar, dosa and Pongal. It's worth trying this place. Price is right for the taste of the food.
Clean and quick service. The only con we found is, its hard to park the vehicle.
Vfm:4.5/5

Visited this place after having it for a lot of time in my bucket list.
And was pretty much satisfied.
But was never full even after eating a lot.
Awaiting the next visit

Hi. Was there on Sunday at about 10 in morning. Had amazing idlis, vadas, dosas with their speciality sambhar poured on top of the idlis. Not to miss. Their coffee was good, but would definitely rate the Sangeetha coffee to be top class, better than Ratna Cafe.

Placed a order via Swiggy at 12 pm. They accepted the order and after two hours they sent out a message via Swiggy that order is out of stock.

Issues with Ratna Cafe.

1) The order was placed at 12pm so there is no chance of the item being out of stock.

2) They promised delivery in 35 mins but made me wait for 2 hours and then only initiated me that too after I called them several times.

3) No prior intimation , No respect for people who order food.

Please don't order food here as they show high level of Ignorance and Arrogance.

Hope the Hotel management learns a little bit of humanity else better they shut down the place and they are ruining Ratna cafe name / brand .
Ashwini
Ratna cafe then you should definitely try out their sambar . Filter coffee and their pipping hot jelabis . Service is prompt.value for money

Been coming to the establishment of Ratna cafe for almost 2 decades...I've mainly visited the Triplicane branch ....Today decided to visit the Mylapore branch...This is not gonna be a full review but if you want one just read into the one that I've done on the Triplicane branch most of it remains the same. A lot of familiar faces and with a very welcoming ambiance felt right "at home" but there are a few drawbacks, the idly and dosa sizes are smaller but the cost remains the same, there is also difference in the taste of the potato masala as well but the taste of the sambhar is still so yummy😋. I do hope the management can take these are suggestions and maybe look into. Thank you in advance.

A Sunday morning breakfast trip to Ratna Cafe Mylapore was a total waste of time firstly they had run out of their famous Sambhar so ordered Rava Dosa their second best in the menu and all we got was a sampler size of the dosa which costed 62 plus taxes🙄🤪.and it was not even late morning

Have your breakfast here on your way back from the beach after watching sunrise. Great authentic South Indian food. Waiters know Hindi, which was a relief. Filter coffee is also good. Service is prompt.

They have one of the best vegetarian meals in the town.
It was a complete meal. No compromise on quality.
The veg briyani here is good too.
I have been here, ordered food. They never disappoint.

Must try place at mylapore.

I have had only lunch here.
I will surely try having breakfast and dinner here because of so many good reviews about their sambar.
Kurma was not tasty. Very spicy

When in Mylapore , you should try out Ratna Cafe . I should say that this is one of the legendary joints in the area . They don’t have an impressive ambiance however what’s impressive here is the Sambar ! I tried out their Idly, Dosa , Pongal and Vada and they were all yummy and you would know why from my previous sentence . The Idly was soft and non sticky . The Dosa was crisp with some yummy masala within . The vada was crispy and fluffy as well . They definitely know what they are making .

If you are just stopping with a meal here, you are making a mistake . Try our the yumazing filter coffee as well . The service was not quite prompt owing to the crowd at any point of time .

Food : 4/5
Service : 4/5
Ambiance : 3/5
Value for money : 4/5

- Foodie From Madras

This particular outlet was famous in Triplicane and it is said that people who visit Parthasarathy would definitely go to this place atleast for a Coffee and then start their journey back home! It was originally Ratna Cafe (since 1948) and was rebranded recently after being expanded to various parts of the city.

Started by Mr. Jaggilal Gupta, who hailed from Mathura, he popularised the most consumed breakfast Idli-Sambhar and it became a rage. I did not try their signature dish but went on a different route.

It’s about a year since they opened in Mylapore near the Vasantha Bhavan on South Mada Street. I have tried twice earlier but wasn’t impressed much by their dishes! Tried their Triplicane outlet and I think it was better.

1. Kuzhi Paniyaram – INR 40/-

Volcanic hot paniyarams (3 nos.) served with 2 chutneys and Sambhar. I had to wait for 5 whole minutes to get 1 Paniyaram to my tummy. It was that hot. The chutneys and the Sambhar were individually dope and along with the Paniyaram it was fantastic. Must try when you visit the place.

2. Chola Poori – INR 90/-

Wait! Wait a second! Don’t get aww-ed by the size of the poori. The diameter may be big, but the other things were not up to the mark. The Bhatura/Channa did not have the taste of the original how-to-make-channa batura. It looked as if the chef had forgotten the ingredients other than the Channa and did with the available resource to finish the project. Don’t get me wrong but this was the worst channa I have ever had. I was so excited with the diameter of the poori but literally felt like Kattappa killing Baahubali when I had the poori with the Channa. Highly overpriced and not recommended at all! Have it at your own risk.

Since I didn’t have any tomato chutney of the Paniyaram left, I had to ask for another cup of channa and I ate the remaining poori all by myself. For 90/- just see the amount of channa that’s been provided! Aathirangal varuthu makkale moment thrown over while consumption.

Their USP is just the Idli-Sambhar and they keep telling it over and over. Just try that thing alone and have a filter coffee. Come out soon and get back to your work.
The bill was aound INR 314/-. Hope you shall think and re-think again before trying Triplicane Ratna Cafe. Let me know if you have faced any worse situations as such below. Thank you.

Please follow the instagram handle - @epomesoruthan for more food reviews and droolishy pictures.

It's nice pocket friendly place to have your coffee craving fulfilled on the go.
No place to sit and drink, so the only option is take away.
Can be seen from main road easily.

Ordered Ghee Roast Masala Dosai for breakfast this morning ... paid ₹97+ but got only plain Masala Dosai, that too dry & not crispy ... no Ghee or even oil at all ... very, very disappointed with the quality & feel have been deliberately cheated as it was a delivery order.

Since 1948 serving the best sambar ,where taste has been maintained over the years.
This restaurant is especially known for their authentic taste of idly sambar ,vada, filter coffee & ghee dosa in chennai.
Overpriced but it's worth to pay for such delightful idly sambar.
Hot jalebi was perfect 👌🏻
Certain drawbacks - can improve their ambience and parking facilities.
During peak hours it's very difficult to park four wheelers.
Must visit this place in chennai if you are a super foodie.

Visited to this place recently as its a well known south Indian restaurant at chennai. Honestly i was very much disappointed with the food quality and taste. Ordered a ghee roast and turned out to be a disappointment. Tried juice and dessert and did not like those as well.

If you visit Chennai and ask around for restaurants that you absolutely must try, Ratna Cafe would form part of the top 5 restaurant suggestions especially if you are looking for authentic South Indian food. Being a chennaiite, not proud to say that I hadn’t visited this joint until quite recently. And when I did visit, I was sorely disappointed. Not sure if it’s because of the high expectations I had due to the rave reviews. Anyway, we had the sambar idli (of course), the Pongal, puri and coffee. To begin with, all of the dishes tasted quite well but the first thing you notice is the portion size. The Pongal in particular is served in an extremely small katori and the prices in comparison are a bit on the high side. The coffee is good enough but again a bit pricey. For the quantity and quality of food being served here, it isn’t worth the price.

A legendary restaurant that started operating first in Triplicane slowly has started spreading its wings. Mylaporeans are a lucky lot as there is one outlet right here in Alamelu Manga Puram. There is nothing else to say about the food but excellent. Their sambar is outstanding and when coupled with Idly, Vadai or Dosai, turns your tongue into a playground for sensory delights. The price is also very reasonable and so be wary of getting addicted.

I ordered one uttapam and filter coffee; but they didn’t deliver the coffee. I called them up 10 times out of which they picked up twice and kept me on hold for several minutes. Totally disappointed!!

Poor service. We ordered butter dosa and sambar idly. Ratha cafe is most famous for sambar idly and guess what they served dosa but they forget to serve us the idly. I asked couple of times still they didn't bother. Dosa batter was too old as we could taste the tartness.
The customers who came after us had sambar idly. Poor service ever
I left the place then
The evergreen ratna_cafe 's idly sambar is a must try! The unchanged taste of the traditional sambar and soft idly, since 1948 .
Ps. It's said that Subramania Bharatiyar used to eat this idly sambar quite often in tripilicane Ratna cafe.
The bliss is Wen you have the hot hot filter kaapi right after the idly.

I ordered 3 items... Rava Dosa, Sambar Idly and limited meals... They delivered only two items.. Rava Dosa was missing... I complained to the delivery boy, who was lost.. He seems to have not checked the contents before leaving the restaurant... He has simply short delivered.. Now he has gone back to bring the 3rd item.. We are waiting... No time lines, no guarantee that this will be resolved.. Very sad service.. Last time I will order with Zomato....
Now after 15 mins, they have delivered a completely different item...
Anyway now we finished our meal together, food was good..
