Review Murugan Idli Shop - Chennai (Madras)

Anybody who is from Chennai knows about this place as it is quite famous amongst authentic south indian food lovers. They serve different types of Idlis on banana leaves with authentic chutneys on the side which is unlimited. The idlis are soft and tastes amazing even without any chutney. Must visit in Chennai

I visited two Murugan Idli Shops in Chennai i.e. one in Velachery and other one in Paryys. At both the places best part that I felt was their hospitality! The way they serve the food on Bamana Leaf, the way they serve Sambhar on it (although you can ask for bowl for Sambhar), their variety of Chutneys. All over experience was too good! I will say that, if you have visited South India and haven't tried Murugan Idli Shop then your trip to South India is incomplete.

I had breakfast here on 27 Aug 2023 Podi Idli + Ghee dosa. Service is quick & good Taste is obviously good in murugan idli shop. Atmosphere is also ok Place is available to sit.

I always enjoy eating at Murugan idly.... Love the taste of 4 different kinds of chutneys which they serve along with idly... Their Podi idly is a must try item.

Ironically we did not order idlis😄l had ordered ghee masala dosa with varieties of chutneys, sambhar and medhuvada, was very yummy and tasty. In the end we ordered special Jigarthanda, even that was superb with chocolate bubbles adding extra flavour. Only drawback which l found was the washroom as it was not clean, washbasin didn't have water too.So kindly take care of that.Overall l had a good experience. Thankyou guys.

The reason why Murugan Idly lost its shine as earlier because of its poor service and the taste is not as before. They were too good before that's why people were very much in queue to wait but now it became a study for any entrepreneur to know how a company falls from top. Hope they would rectify their mistakes and evolve

All the chutneys are good...but the prices are so high...the high price list is just for the brand name...could have been better

This Murugan idli shop is located in my office street. Me and my father often visit this place for their simple and authentic South Indian menu. Never fail to offer us the hot, fresh and delicious food. Today I ordered the following: Idly Plain dosa Sweet pongal Medu vada Podi onion uthapam Above mentioned items are my favourite. Highly recommended too.

Very tasty food . But pretty bad service . Improving service would make them one of the best

Very tasty and authentic south indian Tamil tiffin items. All chutneys are very special. I tried Puli panirayam karam and uttapam. Service was quiet fast at 8pm on Trusday. Must eat in Chennai .

Best podi idli ever !! This place is a must visit when you come to Chennai! I dont think Ive had any better idli than their soft fluffy podi idlis! Its a melt in the mouth goodness! Idli podi here is made in-house hence THE BEST! You can also buy their podi and idli dosa batter at their stores. Do try their SWEET PONGAL too! Its too good to be true!! Definitely going for it again ♥️

All tastes really good. We ordered panner butter dosai and butter masala dosai along with idly.

Plane dosa was impressive with 4 exciting dips. Judgment of rates depends on person. Definitely a idli place . I had better vada at low cost.

Not expected road side quality at such premium price and branded restaurant. Food was way too cold and it was tasteless eventhough paying premium price for the item.

Ambiance was good in that locality but the quality and quantity of the food doesn't match the price need improvement. Good profile is important

Always finds some unique taste here.
Serving in banana leaves adds some freshness to the food.
Ordered onion uttapam, vada, onion rava, podi ghee masala dosa and ghee roast.
Four different varieties of chutney makes anxious to finish the food.
Chutneys added colours to the plate.
Yummy tummmy..

Ordering online , is not really good .
By the time it came was cold .
They have swiggy taping on packing .
Not satisfied with food and service

Ordered for ghee podi idly, masala dosa, podi masala dosa, sambar idly, vada and plain dosa. Everything was just average. Masala dosa was below average. The food is definitely not worth the money paid.

The service was really poor. The food was served after a very long wait and it was served cold. Chutney and sambar were to be asked again and again but not served.

Overall a bad experience and not going back here again!
Priyanka Nagori

The manager at your parry 's outlet needs to learn how to talk to guests. Murugan idli is known for your love and hospitality but here it's opposite. You are going to lose patronage soon if you don't act immediately

Went in the evening for coffee and snacks. We had ordered vada and bajji. The coffee was asked to be served hot and strong and was served in the way asked for. Vada tasted good too. And we have a couple of times take away for dinner. The packing was good and the quality of the food and taste is also good. Their jigarthanda is one of the best in the city.

Just the normal murugan idili shop !
U get some amazing podi idili’s but then budget wise not the best option in town to have some idilis. Dosa and vada are also pretty much good.
Love their variety of chutneys.
Particularly their kuzhi paniyaram or fried idili is pretty dope!
But tn pretty damn costly i would say

Has always trusted this place. Great coffee and the accompaniments for idly is amazing. Onion uthappam is a must try. Also the podi. Overall the place keeps your tummy happy for breakfast

There is no home delivery for any murugan idli branch. But on the banner board of each restaurant they will mention they have home delivery.Thats a huge lie. They are scared of customer's service satisfaction. All they need is dinout customers they do not care about the people who wish to eat at home via home delivery.Their price is too high but the taste is some what good but when it comes to delivery they are the worst thing to choose for any hunger.

The service was worst .. the waiter dint really give any kind of respect ..

They served something in the name of thayir vadai..and it was a disaster. And when i complained about it to the waiter.. he replied"everyone is eating this and why do you complaint about it"..

Even though the other dishes were satisfactory. The service made me so upset .
Sudharsan
The place for best breakfast items. Absolutely Pure ghee in every dish served. It doesnot
fall under "worth visiting " category but under "MUST VISIT".

South Indian meals is very traditional and meets the expectations. Good ambiance and good service. Enjoyed the food served on a plaintain leaf

The waiters were very rude ,when I was eating idly , he never even asked whether I need podi Idly , the waiter came and kept two podi Idly in my leaf then I told them to remove it , they should ask the people before keeping something in their leaf , such a bad restaurant . I finished having idly and ordered jigardhanda , he asked me to get up from there and eat it by sitting in the chair outside , it was so bad , the chair inside was empty even after I came out , that day not many people were there still he asked me to go out to have jigardhanda . Not at all customer friendly.

By FAR THE WORST EXPERIENCE I'VE HAD in this chain of restaurant and it's not because of the food. The manager SRINIVASAN has to be taught how to handle people. No sense of manner no responsibility at all. I was sitting and having my lime juice waiting for my receipt (I did them a favour when they charged me for three podi idli like any good customer I corrected the waiter and told him it was four ) which the waiter forgot. The manager comes up to me and asks me to leave and starts shoving the chairs on the table. I requested him if I could change my place to the section which was opened and he told me that it's not a waiting area for you please leave. Keep in mind I still dint receive the receipt and I was still having my juice. Then we started arguing and I had to wait till they made a new receipt and then I had to leave. ABSOLUTELY NO MANNERS WHAT SO EVER. He accused me OFF BEING A LIAR AS WELL. Having a manager like this would just cause a bad reputation to the restaurant. Looks like the staff in the restaurant don't appreciate customers who points out mistakes in the receipt. #FIRETHEMANAGER

Hopeless customer service... We came at 1.30pm and ordered for curd rice. The waiter mentioned that curd rice was available. After waiting 15mins, another waiter came and told that curd rice was over and that they had only tomato rice and tamarind rice. At 1.30pm at peak lunch hour, how can the restaurant say they have run out of food and that too curd rice which is something so basic.

We then placed ordered tamarind rice. The portion size of the tamarind rice is the same as they serve in the temple in the small donna bowl and side dish is just Sundal. For variety rice it is always appalam, chips or fryums as side dish, here they didn't give any of those. Which restaurant gives sundal for variety rice and that too this is from a south Indian restaurant is such a shame!
What a hopeless attitude from the staff!!
Not recommended...Behaviour and attitude of the waiter and supervisor is very rude....as if they are doing a favour by serving the customers.

Great food, clean place, fast service and friendly staff. Gave a true taste of the actual South Indian. Podu idli, paneer dosa and jigarthanda especially suggested.

Rude behavior :
I regularly dine and take parcels from your parrys branch. Last saturday ( 5 Aug 2017) around 9 pm i came with my family (wife and kid) to take parcel. While i was waiting, i ordered sweet from the stall and my kid and wife was having it on the seat located opposite to cash counter. During that time, another family came for dine and the supervisor came and asked to getup and wait outside for the parcel and he behaved very rudely. My wife and kid still eating the sweet and he behaved rudely to us. I asked him to cancel the order and he did not even asked the reason and ordered the cashier to cancel our order. Very rude behavior from him. Very disappointed by this behavior.

Note : There is row opposite to the wash room was empty and they did not serve and have closed the row.

Though the ambience is good, food taste is just average. Must improve the customer service and taste! There is no dedicated car parking, beware!

Went for sunday morning breakfast, ghee podi idli was good. The service was very poor when i asked for jigarthanda the waiter asked me to buy from outside the shop telling me there are lack of waiters so that he can't bring it to my table, Outside, the shop was covered by houseflies and was quite annoying while having the jigarthanda

Situated on a prime location opposite to busy High court and Parry's corner, some how the food and service let's it down, specially the service, the waiter does you a favor serving you!

Waiters yell at you "Tamil Teriyumaa" slang is pathetic. You feel disgusted visiting it with family, more over this specific Parry's branch of Murugan idly does no justice to the brand name of the chain, where the quality is quite hampered for the cost they have to bring down considering the competition from Sangeetha which still is the undisputed first preference be it food and the service !

Overall

Food 3/5
Service 0.5/5

Always take this as last option rather find Sangeetha and Hot chips near by as better alternative.

I'm residing in parry's for years, now only Murugan idli shop opened here, food is good, moreover
ambience is fantastic when compared to other branches, if u visit parry's, feel like having light food, go for it without any hesitation!
Dipanjana Khadolia
When in Parry's you got to visit this place for their food. Right in Armenian Street very close to SVR and cake park. They've got enough space for two wheeler parking , four wheeler could be a problem in the busy street. Just outside the restaurant they've got their jigarthanda stall, also...

Visited the place during my visit to Chennai. The place gives an experience of authentic south Indian food. The food is served on banana leaves. I loved their podi idli and the wide variety of chutneys were all yum. An ideal place to go for lunch.
Happy Tummy
One of the best places to eat Idlis the softest you can imagine and their coconut chutney the purest form you can get please don't miss out on this
Siva Sainath
When I buy parcel coconut cuttny is always spoiled and today both coconut chuttny and sambar was spoiled
Never buy here bcoz they don't have local kitchen, everything comes from their central kitchen at ambattur
FoodieTyrant
We went here for breakfast and it was crowded but after sometime we got a good place.
We ordered idly, masala dosa, pongal and vada. The idly wasn't that great but the dosa and pongal were extraordinary 😊 again the vada wasn't that great. The chutney and sambar were also tasting good.
The rates were nominal. I suggest you try the dosa instead of idly over here.

Went for a late night Jigarthanda. They have this separate counter outside exclusively for this drink. Decent pricing of just 60bucks. It's really yummy. Worth the cost.

It has a good ambience. Perfect place for breakfast.. The food quality is up to the mark. And undoubtedly the idlis and dosaz are perfect..
But when it comes to the lunch specially the meals, I would neither prefer again nor suggest anybody this place.. Coz v didn't find it tasty at all infact the service was also quite poor n more over the food was so cold.
Yes It's much crowded during the lunch time but the meals at other south Indian hotels are much much better..

Yet another branch in this prime location of Parrys, opposite to the MHA gate of the High Court, in the same street as Sangeetha. Out front, they have their Jigathanda stall which is a life saver on a sweltering hot day. Priced at ₹60 you get a yummy Jigarthanda. (Now don't go comparing it to the famous Madurai sort, because I haven't tasted those and these seem perfectly satisfactory).

The ambiance is the opposite of subtle. Too many lights, decorations and huge posters of their dishes framed. They served us 4 chutneys and Sambhar on banana leaves. Special mention to their coconut chutney, just superb! We were four in number and we decided to have the following :-

- Podi Idli - First time I'm having them at MIS. Priced at ₹25 each which makes one plate ₹50. Pretty steep. But the podi and the yummy ghee was wow.
- Ghee Roast - It was amazing. Loved how crispy and light it was. Tasted best with their white coconut chutney.
- Spl.Jigarthanda - Was just like any other branch but the ice cream wasn't upto the mark.

Also when we decided we wanted one more Jigarthanda after finishing our meal, they asked us to go out and have in the stall outside just because they had already billed us.

Quick service bad reception. Loved the food though.
