Review Tanjore Restaurant - Chennai (Madras)

Nancy R.
Wow. One of best South Indian meals I have had in Chennai. Served on a banana leaf, unlimited servings (you will want more!). Best hotel sambhar ever. You will get a bit of everything served on your leaf - rice, dal, sambhar, a curry, another dal based item, and today was cucumber raita. Concentrated tamarind sauce and delicious lemon pickle on the side and appalam.

Best South Indian lunch in the city. In terms of taste, hygiene, price, quality and quantity full marks. You may have to wait for your turn, since the place has limited seating and demand is high. But the wait will be worth it, surely

Plantain leaf vegetarian South Indian meals. Reasonable price. Above par taste and quality food. Service can be improved. Seating capacity is around 24 only.

Food is good and tasty at reasonable rate for lunch. Parking is challenging because of good crowd.

Atmosphere is good. Food is good. The staff can be a bit gentle. They serve in a hurry, dumping the items on the leaf, making noise while keeping the vessel on the table

Simple South Indian meals, not too elaborate, but wholesome and very delicious. I didn’t miss anything and didn’t waste anything that was served. It would have been a crime to leave over anything! The food was served by the Nepali boys who could use some training on how the items flow to the leaf but they were prompt and quick in getting the items. I am waiting to visit again. BTW the current price is RS 200 per head and they are open only for lunch hours between 11.30 and 14.30.

Was out with Mom near here and so decided to check this place out for lunch.

I mean a full on vaazhai ilai virundhi is something you can't say no to right?

But I definitely did not find the place value for money. The service wasn't good either. We had to keep waiting to be served.

The food was pretty homely and the quality I would say was decent. I loved the sweet.

But I don't think I'll be back again. This is at best, a one time place :)

My favourite South Indian Thaali. Reasonably priced. Good place to eat, small though. Should go there early. Returned many times being late.

Wonderful place for authentic South Indian food. Served on a banana leaf, food is very tasty without any commercialization. Staff can be a bit more smiling, prompt in service and response.

I went for plantain leaf lunch on saturday. They started serving with gulab jamun, appalam, kootu, poriyal, thair pachadi, dhal then rice, sambar, rasam, one cup curd. Already they placed the tray which have vathakuzhambu, salt and pickle. Everything was like home food. Oil less, non spicy, masala free which gave lite feeling to stomach even though it was full. Only one disappointment was vathakuzhambu found to be sour. And heard an info that only on sundays they serve aviyal and potato kari. So decide your day...

It's great for a south Indian meals or tiffin items.ambience is ok. Service is ok. All tiffin items are very good. The food is served on banana leaves. It's been a while since my review for this place has been pending. Oh yes, it's a pure veg joint. So if you're a carnivore....Stay away lol

Were in a roving mood to have a great thali and what better place than New Woodlands.Got diverted to the standee near the washroom which said full meals on plaintain leaf at Thanjavur. Knowing the Krishna serves in the ss plate i enquired from the attender downstairs and he said its the same as downstairs minus an ice cream and puri.So i did trudge upstairs. And the first downer was the fact that i was told to buy the token which was more a culture of a mess not a restaurant of woodlands standard. And on hindsight how i wished he didnt accept cards. But i ended up buying paying rs300 for 2.And i entered. Boy,was it such a let down. It looked desolate unispiring and absolutely insipid. But yet i felt -this is woodlands and the food will redeem itself. How very wrong was I. The way the food was served or may i say shoved on the leaf, the stacking of a poriyal and a kootu with a pachadi which had no reason to be there made up the so called "thali".itvwas indeed the most disappointing fare ever i have had and when one considers its from the house of Woodlands it makes it even worse. The ambience was atrocious ,the service was pathetic with grim glum faces, the food was pathetic. I do realise that reviews are insensitive to efforts but when standards nosedive in established outlets then one needs to question ones longevity .If i understand that rs 60 alone differentiates between the thali downstairs to thanjavur i would pay that more to experience a better fare.this was third rate fit for a roadside restaurant definitely not Woodlands. Dissapointing and Dissapointed.

Typical south indian tanjore banana leaf meals is what you get here. Reviews of others give you a flavor of what you get. I prefer the meals downstairs in krishna. But. meals here is an experience in itself. Unlimited meals with limited papads πŸ˜‚ and to finish a banana and a paan. Service is good. Food is nothing to write home about but it's good and tasty. The only thing I didn't like here was people who piled their leaf with food like the world's gonna end and then wasting most. A must place for bachelors who are running short of funds in the month end πŸ˜‰πŸ˜Ž

I went to this place with 3 other office colleagues earlier this month. It is one of the restaurant inside the new Woodlands hotel. This place is easy to locate. New Woodlands is landmark by itself being one of the old popular restaurant in Chennai. Near savera / music academy. Towards the end of bridge while heading beach.

This restaurant is Comparable very smaller than other 2 restaurant in the premises. Just one small room with few tables. Located in first floor. Take centre entrance of hotel to go to this restaurant. Have ample space for parking.

Ambiance is let down. Pretty ordinary. Poor seatings. 4 people has to sit in straight line. Like how we sit in marriage Hall. Not seen seating like this in hotel. Suits only if you went alone or 2 people. Service is just ok.

Only option is meals here. No variations available I guess. Content is very ordinary. Taste is below average. Really disappointed with it. Price is slightly on higher side when compare to what we get. Not going to revisit this place again. No value for money.

This is my first time here. Lunch time, Sunday. Lots of cars and people in the premises. I navigated to Tanjore restaurant. I was asked to sit on the corridor outside and wait for my turn. In a few minutes, I purchased the meals token, priced at INR150 and entered the hall.

Typical wedding feast setup. Rows of tables and chairs, with banana leaves on it. This was the closest to authentic South Indian meals I ever had in Chennai. Unlimited portions but lesser when it comes to the varieties on the leaf. Pachadi, Potato Poriyal, Avial, Paruppu, Sambar, Rasam, Appalam, Jamun and Curd. Pachadi, Paruppu and Sambar were the best. Rasam and avial were odd. Poriyal was too spicy.

When coming to not so good things, there hung in the air a stench of wipe cloth, and it spoiled the whole mood. I would say INR150 is a bit too much for that. But given that it is a restaurant celebrated for authenticity, I hope it just happened to be not a good day and I must visit again in another few weeks.

For long craving to have a nice traditional south Indian Brahmin style meals that has aracha vitta sambar, paruppu rasam, poricha koottu, vetta koyambu. My friend recommendedΒ Tanjore Restaurant at Mylapore.Β Puzzled when he said it is just at New Woodlands premises.Β Β I am a frequent visitor to New woodlands for two decades now.Β How come I missed that.Nothing to boast on Ambience though but got compensated by enjoying great service rendered by few North Indianstaffs (Nepalis)Β ever smiling.Β At first,Β Felt Rs.150/-Β was slightly expensive for a Thali Β but worth it.Β Typical pumpkin aracha vitta sambar, Sundakka vetta koyambu, Takkali rasam and bindi masala dryΒ (poriyal) and chow chow poricha kootu and above all it was unlimited.Β Probably for the first time had gone for second serve for Sambar.Β I loved the foodΒ and wished the next time I go there take my mom for she loves traditional south Indian food.Overall fantastic experience.Β Would visit again with my whole family.

Food was good. It was friend's treat and so it turned out to be really great. Ambience is cool, you get to listen to melodies and they made that day special. It was a expensive, however you can afford to hangout once.

Go here for a filling feel good south indian meals. The food here is typical brahmin type, and we can see many coming.
Service is nice and the ambience is like a marriage dining hall.
Gets a bit crowded during weekends and have to wait, otherwise its a good foodie place.

I damn care about ambiance, but only only only and ONLY taste will always decide my ratings for any restaurant, all other factors ambiance, cost, hospitality, service etc.are totally irrelevant for me. Tanjore Restaurant stands apart than most other restaurant with tongue friendly homely meals which deserve best in my rating. Even if they offer this kind of homely food in open ground, I will readily go and enjoy my my meals with equal ease without any grumble!

Once this restaurant was good. Now lost its touch. I think in rice they add sunnambu. except for few items , nothing is good there. Samabar is not upto the mark.something is missing in Rasam,

Best place for the people who love typical south indian food..

One of the best restaurants in town offering a typical "Vaazha Ellai Saapadu" (Banana Leaf Meal).

Ambience: The set up is pretty simple, you are offered a two seater table and chair and it is spacious. You can enjoy your meal without having to ponder over any shoulder bump or elbow bumps at your neighbour. Also the A/C is quite cozy. On a hot sunny afternoon, you can enjoy the coolness and a good meal. The entire hall can accommodate 25 people to the maximum. However, if you are expecting a restaurant type of seating (group table), you have chosen a wrong place. Here they offer a typical Marriage style virundhu seating set up. If at all you want to experience a wedding hall dining setup, you will be seeing one here (of course, minus the wedding).Overall, my rating is 5/5

Service: Excellent, Amazing. Service is one of the main reason, I keep going back to this restaurant. They never get tired refilling the glasses with water, refilling the food. Actually, it is one of the few restaurants, where I felt as if they are spoiling you with their service. I try to eat less however ends up eating more. Amazing service, Good training and good approach towards each and everyone of the guests. My rating is obviously 5/5

Food: Simple but Superb!!! You will be treated with an authentic south indian food variety, ranging from Sambar, Rasam, Aviyal, Poriyal, Appalam, Dhal, Ghee, Curd, Raitha, Sweet and of course Vatha Kulambu. If at all you want to show the authentic south indian dishes that will be served at any place, you can check it out here as a trial version. Everytime I visit this place, the food gets better and better. And the best part is, they serve with a smile and also the food is quite hot and fresh. Do not expect any exotic type food in here. And to top it off, you are given a beeda and a banana after you relinquish to the meal. Excellent end to an amazing food experience. My rating is again, 5/5

Overall, if you need to experience a typical South Indian Food, this is the best place. No gimmicks, No glittery.. Just plain old policy. Great Quality of Food without biting your budget!!!

If you are looking for Kannada type veggie food in the heart of Chennai, then this is where you go, in my experience. Not Udupi, not Tamilina, but what I would call Kannada heartland type of chutneys and food.

I have been staying and/or eating at this branch of Woodlands for about 4 decades now, and while the hotel adjacent provides brilliant value for money, ample parking and big rooms, it is Tanjore which is a compulsory stop for me in Chennai every visit.

Food is basic South Indian veg, but as I said, it is the chutneys which take one to another dimension.

Have a meal, stroll past the home of the late Dr. Radhakrishnan, and head for Marina Beach to exercise the ghee off.

This place serves authentic South Indian Meal in banana leaf.... the menu is typical South Indian Meals...

Taste ain't anything special nor anything unique but its a good meal.... You can visit this place once in a while if you are nearby.

Ambiance is not great as for a restaurant of this repute, its very normal.

Service is prompt. They keep filling the glasses of water as soon as you drink, never tire :-).

Tanjore Restaurant is one of the few places which still serve authentic Tamil thalaivalai virundhu - not the restaurantized versions of it.

The restaurant is on the first floor of New woodlands on RK salai. No frills and one feels like its a traditional wedding feast. Kootu, poriyal, aviyal, appalam, dhal with ghee, Sambar, Rasam, Curd with vatha kulambu all served with hot rice - unlimited. Even the seating arrangement is like the wedding feast so no group tables.

One of my top 3 options for a very satisfying traditional Tamil sappadu in Chennai
