The food was very tasty. Very nice ambience. Location is also quite good. God place to dine in for a change. Quick service. Small yet good restaurant.
One of the best Mutton biriyani in Chennai, friendly staff, good locality, not much expensive, alcohol available as it is an resto bar. Previous name of the restaurant was Masala pattinam.
Amazing taste thali item are very gud ambience is very nice ... Lunch menu is less when compared to dinner better try dinner there.. congrats to masala pattinam team .. must improve in your service... have to wait for long time to place a order..
Order for Non-veg meals & really worth for the quantity for what they serve.

Food and Flavour: 4/5
Ambience: 4/5
Service: 3.5/5
Seating: 3.5/5
Value for Money: 3/5

* South and North Indian cuisines

The front door promoted a Chettinad/South Indian theme to the restaurant with a more urbanised uplift to the interiors, to give you a fine dine feel.
Probably the first ones to arrive at 13:40; the two of us were greeted by the staff as we chose our table next to the bar counter.
Upon placing the order for soup and starters, we were served a welcome drink (irrespective of your order), watermelon juice and fryums.
Order:-
Kozhi Rasam (₹125) - Soothing, tangy rasam with few shreds of chicken. Indicative of use of chicken stock, tasted great.
Kola Urundai (₹225) - 4 mid sized mutton balls, dry and grainy. Not the best I've had.
Chicken Uppukari (₹195) - Dry, very mildly flavoured chicken chunks with red peppers, whole garlic cloves and shallots. Absolute cracker of a dish, but for the quantity. Small. Must try.
Lucknow Mutton Biriyani (₹240) - With intense Indian spices flavours, the masala laden meat was a pleasure to mix and eat the rice with. Served in a clay pot, the portion size was large.
Lucknow Chicken Biriyani (₹220) - The same taste as the mutton variant, a bit mild on flavours, masala and drier.
The Raitha and Salna were good. May have been better if they were served hot.
Prawn Fry (₹195) - A hint of saltiness but accompanied with great taste. Prawns were fresh and fried well. Quality of sliced onions were questionable!
Biriyani took about 20 mins to be served. Otherwise service was prompt, quick.
While the portion for Biriyani were quite large, the starters were really small. Probably the sides/gravies would be better in proportion.
The staff got a bit involved with the news on TV at times; doesn't promote professionalism even if there's very guests/tables occupied. And the TV volume was high!
Their liquor licenses were apparently revoked during the recent ruling. They're most likely to be back in business in a few months. Not many a time you see alcohol served paired with South Indian cuisine. A calm place for a lunch date/formal lunch or just to enjoy the good food. Seating and air conditioning were adequate.
Total Bill:- ₹1416/- including GST of ₹216 at 18%.
Excellent service was offered to us and really tasty food was served. The ambiance was calm and lets us enjoy our day. Actually we have been there for friends bday and we r glad we chose that place.Hope to go again soon
I've had the opportunity to dine at this establishment twice. As with all my other reviews I shall be basing my review solely on their fine biriyani, and not considering other facts such as price, ambience and service.
Masala Pattinam - Lucknow Chicken Biriyani
1. Flavor profile of the Rice - 4/5, Balanced, yet somehow impactful. While it does stray a little bit from what you'd expect from a lucknow biriyani, it still is very enjoyable throughout the meal as the flavors envelop your palate.
2. Texture of rice & Consistency - 5/5, texture and consistency have been consistent and also very enjoyable. The mouth feel is amazing as well.
3. Side dish(gravy + raita) - 3/5, perhaps most disappointing part of the meal was the gravy, I was disappointingly unable to figure out what sort of gravy was provided. While the raita alone managed to be a good side dish.
4. Meat - 4/5, amazing amazing chicken. Definitely one of the best... But, it does have some consistency issues, though they are rare. They do manage to ruin some otherwise perfect meat.
5. Overall - 4/5, Even with all it's (minor) flaws taken into account it is definitely an amazing biriyani, especially if you're in the mood for some lucknow style biriyani. I would recommend requesting the biriyani be brought out separately, as I found any other dishes maybe overpowering or may ruin the perfectly balanced flavour.
All my reviews are on biriyani exclusively, so if you're craving some amazing biriyani feel free to check out my profile and follow for some more awesome stuff.
Courtesy my friend, I travelled all the way to Alwarpet on a sunny Sunday afternoon for a meal at Masala Pattinam. The experience was not disappointing but was not impressive either.
The place is easy to locate. If you are travelling by car, finding a place to park may be a problem. The restaurant was surprisingly free during that time and we could choose a table of our choice. Then came the big problem of finding someone who could service the table. After some calling and requests, we finally found someone who could serve us. The service was better after it started.
The menu for the afternoon seemed like limited. We ordered Paneer Tikka and Vegetable Seekh Kebab for the starters and some mocktails. I am not a great fan of Paneers and thus will reserve my comments only for the Seekh Kebab, which was very good. For the main course we had Subzi Mahak (Vegetables in sweet cashew gravy) and found it to be very good. This is a very good alternative for Malai Kofta in case you want to avoid spicy gravy items. With the Subzi Mahak we shared amongst ourselves Stuffed Kulcha, Garlic Naan and Plain Kulcha. Based on my friend's recommendation we also have Veg Biryani, which in my opinion was average.
The quality of food was very good. The restaurant perhaps needs to improve on the service part. Overall good and worth future visits. And of course, with Rs.1500 for 3, it was certainly value for money.
Good vegetarian homely food. Place was clean. Service was average.
Nice ambience. Both veg and non-veg served. Tables available for groups. Prices are nominal. Soups, starters and other dishes are tasty. The Biriyani thaali costs Rs.240/- Biriyani was good. Variety of non veg dishes available. Veg biryani, served in mud pot was tasty. Non-veg items are served in porcelain. Restaurant is very clean and neat. Walls have been decorated with mud pots and wooden articles. Dishes becomes chill when served. Food supply takes much time. Car parking is a problem.
Masala pattinam is really good in ambience and taste . But bit costly and quantity will be lesser in all starters. Kaviniarisi payasam and chicken uppu Kari is must try here.
