Sree Raj Bhavan seems to be one of those old school vegetarian restaurants of Madras that is still surviving in the corporate Chennai. The ambience is not that great but seems tidy. You have to buy token for meals beforehand. The veg meals consists of limited portion rice with sambar, karakolambu, morekolambu, rasam, more, kootu, poriyal, kesari and appalam. Taste was good overall. I liked their karakolambu and morekolambu in particular. Kathirikai kootu was good too. Service was good. The veg meal costs just Rs60 which I think is good value for money.

Taste : 4/5 ; Ambiance : 3/5 ; Service : 3/5 ; VFM : 3.5/5

Hotel Raj Bhavan is located on the royapettah high road where it meets with gowdia mutt road very near to the popular Cafe Amin...From the outside looks no different than any normal non veg restaurant...with some normal roadside parking only..The ambiance is pretty basic one to seat around 40 ppl the Non A/C hall is average in maintenance too...they are quick and clearing out the plates too..The service is quick and prompt but you definitely cant expect professional behavior as the service looks similar to most veg restaurants in the city..

On my recent visit for breakfast ordered a pongal and medu vada and a onion dosai...Served in very less time...the pongal was really good with perfect taste and laden with ghee and the sambar served along with it was really thick and tasty...tasted really good...the vada was great too with a crispy outer and a soft and fluffy middle..The onion dosa was average stuff though...the chutney served along with fresh and tasty...

Total came to 100 rs for the meal which was pretty nominal for the food served and worth spending..

Good restaurant! Good food for price, easy on your pockets when compared to other restaurants nearby. The food isn't excellent but it's good. The place is decent as well.

I know how much we all, atleast the ones from Tamil Nadu love the idea of the lazy Sunday morning breakfast of Idli, pongal, Dosa, vada, etc with piping hot Sambar 😃 This restaurant is the perfect place to indulge in this tradition😉
Happened to be around this place on some work. Here s my order
1. Pongal Vada - Pongal was gooey n hot, which is the way I love it. Vada wasn't hot, but was soft. They had added a Sunday compliment of Kesari along with Pongal, which tasted good too. Just by the look of the Sambar, I knew it was delicious, you can know it when u see the healthy thick yellow color with boiled dal (which s almost indistinguishable but u know it's there) . This prompted me to go for Sambar Idly too.
2. Sambar Idly - Good soft idlis put in a bowl full of hot Sambar, mind you it was a BIG bowl. Just when I got it, couple of ppl next to me ordered it too tempted by its look ! Sambar contained perfectly boiled onions, carrot, beans n drumstick. Usually in restaurants, the drumstick they use in sambar is very hard, but here drumstick itself got dissolved when you put it in your mouth. Oh my, it was amazing. The Sambar master must be an expert, he knew what he was doing n it wasn't one of those days it was rarely good.
Both coconut n tomato chutney were really good too. I asked for the chutney refill thrice.

Ambience was pleasant n not very crowded.
The reason I m giving only 4 points is that the vada wasn't hot n they didn't have coffee/boost that day due to some machine problem. If not, it would've been the perfect breakfast on par with New Woodlands which is my top breakfast place.
I m still relishing the perfectly made Sambar :)

It was late in morning while coming back from Central while see off my staff ,Thought of breakfast at Sree Raj Bhavan and as entered i asked for my fab Sambar Vada and Sweet lime Juice . The Vada was soaked well in sambar and was very soft with a lot of of Sambar to drink and chopped onions top to accompany. It tasted really well.
Must try next time if available that area.

It's the best budget restaurant near royapetah! The taste is great as well as the service is also good.. Been visiting the for a while now!
The combos may disappoint you though as the quantity in that odd quite less! But the dosa and naan are both great!

It is one of the good veg restaurants that i have tasted in the City. I especially like the south indian breakfast and dinner items. If you are out for lunch, do try their meals.

I wouldn't be so concerned about the ambiance. Its good for a veg restaurant and the service is also good. Do try..

Food: Good, compared to other vegetarian restaurants in the area. I usually have my lunch/dinner here whenever I stay in the nearby Balan International and I am completely satisfied with the taste. They do give 2-3 varieties of Chutneys with Idly/Dosa, out of which, only the traditional Coconut Chutney is good. Maybe that's just because I don't like Tomato Chutney. Please don't go for the Lassi, it's a total waste, instead, try some fresh juices.

Service: Excellent! Especially if you're not a local. Though, they don't look happy all the time, but you get what you want. They have a way to differentiate between the locals and out-of-town peeps and if you're the second type, you'll be treated well.

Seating: They have cushioned chairs in both the AC and NON AC halls with those classical wooden tables. It gets crowded during the peak hours, thanks to the office people.

Ambience: Though, they claim to be a "High Class" restaurant, IMO, it's not. It's just your regular middle-class vegetarian restaurant with an average atmosphere. Nothing much to mention here. And it's easily accessible.

Must Try: Parotta Kuruma, Pongal and Butter/Ghee Masala Dosa.

And my verdict is: Go. If you're in the area and want to have a nice, decent food, Sree Raj Bhavan is the place you're looking for!
