The taste felt authentic and service was great. We tried Tonkatsu, Gyoza,Pork & Beef Ramen, Beef Stir fried Noodles,Karage.
We recommend going for authentic foods as Tonkatsu,Karage,Gyoza and Ramen were very good. They had a variety of sauces for each dish, special mention to wasabi soy sauce - very fresh and fiery 🔥.

Dahlia !! Oh dahlia ! If I could just write a song for you :D . Seriously guys, this place is one of the most underrated Japanese restaurants in Chennai city.
The food is splendid and there is so much on the menu to choose from. The restaurant is managed by a 91 year old cutie who has selected the menu with a keen sense of taste.
I am always satisfied after completing my meal here.
Here are a list of dishes I love:
1. Soya ramen
2.miso ramen
3. Prawn set menu
4. Ton katsu set menu
5. Beef hamburger
6. Sushi-sashimi platter
7. Pork udon noodles

I can't get Dahlia off my mind. Can't wait to return for more !

Edit : I am back here guys, I tried soya miso ramen this time. It lacked a little bit of flavour in it. But the second dish, the sushi platter was out of this world !!

We had Chicken Ramen which was good when had with squid. Tofu teri yaki was good and tasted like chilli paneer but with Tofu. The prawn dumplings were too good. The best part about the restaurant is the authentic japanese style dining table that they have and the while japanese ambience will be loved by all the japanese culture lovers

Unassuming place with great Japanese food. If you come here around 7pm you'll find it hard to find a table - they're all occupied by Chennai's expat Japanese crowd.
One of the few places I've found chawanmunshi. Great tempura and set meals too. So so glad they reopened!!

Reserved a table through Zomato. It's full on weekends and not the kind of vicinity you want to hang around, waiting for a table, so best to reserve one.

My second time here and the building looked even more run-down and even more shady than last time. Maybe cos we entered through the first gate, before 'Just Born'. The gate after, is a better place to enter and park.

My friends were first timers and looked really worried on seeing the building, they weren't really excited about Japanese food either. After convincing them Teppan can't compete in food with this place, we entered, and now we have a couple of avid Japanese food fans!!

The food is mind blowing we had the mixed maki, veg sushi, tofu teriyaki set, tempura set and the Japanese fried rice. Didn't touch the tempura cos of my gluten allergy but the rest of it was DIVINE!

We being 'professional alcoholics', whenever we get the freedom, were disappointed there was no Japanese beer, so we ordered Saki in hot and cold states and LOVED IT!

The service by the Indian lady was exemplary, she needs an award for handling so many tables and all with a smile.

Loved it! Will be back, can't wait to see the state of the building, next year!

Set in a completely unassuming building in the heart of Nungambakkam, Dahlia is a hidden gem. They've been around for as long as I can remember - I've been coming for over 15 years.

The owners are super friendly, and from Japan, so you're getting the real deal here. It's got a cosy original Japanese ambience with semi-tatami seating.

Dahlia maki and kitsune udon are our family's favorites. Try their agedashi tofu as well!

A raw slice of Japan in Chennai!
Sushi, sashimi, katsu curry and quality teriyaki! The slices of fish are fresh and juicy and truly delicious.
Even the tv shows here are authentic.

A humble little restaurant which provides most authentic Japanese food.....the portions r quite satisfying and completely worth the money....I ordered Tamago maki and Ramen...the Ramen was clear as it should be with right amount of noodles, corn, chicken and shiitake mushroom.Maki was in right size not too big and not too small unlike other “Japanese restaurant”...

Most authentic Japanese food in Chennai! Menu card has pictures which makes it easier for us to understand what type of food it is. Lots of vegetarian options available! They have lots of anime and manga series and nice to watch Japanese Tv while eating! Subtle ambience... Simple and neat place!

The place has a great ambience and the people there are amazing. The California roll had transported me to food heavens with such diverse flavors. This was my first Japanese restaurant and it did not disappoint.

Easily the best Japanese restaurant in Chennai. It is run by a Japanese-Indian couple and has the distinction of being the first Japanese restaurant in Chennai. If you ever wanted to try Sushi or other quaint sounding Japanese dishes, plan a dinner here. And hurry! The place might be shutting down soon - December 2018. Update in December 2023: The restaurant is operational. Apparently they mulled closure but are back.

This is a must try for those ppl who would love to explore different cuisine. This is our first time to try Japanese cuisine and it was a treat to our taste buds. Looking forward to visit again. They have different seating style in one corner. Ambience was good, a homely feel restaurant. Coming to food : California Maki sushi was too good - 5/5 Tofu - it was melting in our mouth -5/5 Chicken Kara age - 3/5 Price was bit on a higher side.

This restaurant is truly a hidden gem. A friend brought me to this place, and I was genuinely impressed. Upon entering a narrow alley, I discovered a humble door that led me into a cozy establishment with no more than eight tables. The restaurant is operated by a Japanese man and a local lady, forming a delightful couple. Let me tell you, the food is absolutely incredible. We sampled the butter squid, a pork appetizer, and sushi. From the very start, we noticed the generous portion sizes and the authentic flavors that permeated every dish. In fact, I was so enthralled by the experience that I completely forgot to capture any photographs of the establishment.

Went there on a Saturday at around 6 and they had seating available. Our waiter Valli was extremely helpful and knowledgable. She helped us pick dishes according to our pallete and even showed us how to eat some of the stuff we ordered. We ordered the Prawn Tempura Maki. Their Honey soaked Ginger makes also the difference to this dish and we absolutely loved it. We also got chicken dumplings and a Pork Tonkatsu Ramen. The Ramen was really good, the broth hearty and the noodles firm. For the Dessert, we ordered the Matcha Ice Cream and it was amazing. 10/10 Would highly recommend.

Moving to India, Japanese food is one of the biggest things I missed. Having tried many Japanese restaurants around Chennai I have never found one that compared close till today. Dahlia is now one of my favorite restaurants hands down. It is one of the most most authentic Japanese experiences I have had in India. They have been in the business for 30 years and have gotten the logistics down. The salmon sashimi is so worth it for the amount they give and agedashi tofu is exactly how it is supposed to taste. The californiaroll was huge and tasted exactly like the ones I have had in Seattle WA. The ambience is quaint as I would prefer to pay for the quality of food rather than a grand ambience. Overall this is now my favorite restaurant in Chennai and thats not putting it lightly.

One of the best restaurants in Chennai for Japanese food. Sake is also available here. Must try dishes include the California roll sushi, karaage chicken, tempura and curry rice. Only downside is the restaurant is small with only 6 to 7 tables.
