Kanteenwala is a casual restaurant located at Kalikapur serving Indian & Chinese delicacies at pocket friendly rates. Their lipsmacking appetizers tasted good while the mains were pretty decent. Service is very quick with comfortable seating and a pleasant ambiance. My recommendations from here would be : Murgh Tikka, Chilli Garlic Fish from the starters, Kala Mutton Bhuna, Kanteenwala Special Pulao from the mains. The mocktails are lovely and had a refreshing element in each of them. The Kiwi Delight & the Shirley Temple turned out to be soothing beverages. The Gulab Jamun with ice-cream on the other hand was a perfect ending to our sumptuous meal.
RECOMMENDED.
Go back to the Kanteenwala from your school or college life and relive the experience . Kanteenwala , a casual dining place standing tall on Kalikapore road , just a fews minutes walk from Avisikta apartments towards Jadavpur thana, serves both chinese and North Indian cuisine . So it's a one stop shop for Kolkatans who mostly circumscribe their meal preference over Chinese and North Indian cuisine.
Once you enter the place , you would love the ambience . On one side of the wall hang teapots, mugs , frying pans . On the other side you have beautiful graffiti related to desi food . Most importantly the choice of music is superb . But what matters the most in a restaurant is their food .
So our feast began with a few selective
Starters namely Mountain Chilli chicken , small boneless chicken pieces tossed inside the pan with lots of chillies, bell peppers , onion and galic . They were small packets of flavour .
Chilli Garlic Fish : This was dish of the day for me . Boneless fish fillets cut into small pieces , battered and fried in the pan untill turned golden brown . They were full of flavours and hence was appreciated by everyone.
Murgh Malai kebab : Although it's called murg malai kebab but there were hardly any traces of malai left in it at the time we had it. It felt too dry, may be if we had tried it hot we could have judged it's prep a little better .
Moving on to the mains in which we touched few items each from Indian and Chinese section . Of which my personal favourites include -
Kanteenwala Special Pulao , a polao which depicts the most beautiful coupling of fresh vegetables like beans, carrots potatoes and garnished with fried onions from the top . A vegetarian dish which can stand against many non vegetarian dishes by itself .
Honestly its impact would have been less if it wasn't paired with Murg Tikka Kanteenwala which was again a gem of a dish staring the most consumed meat across the globe . The gravy not only had bright colours but also dominating flavours of butter and tomato . The boneless chicken pieces inside were of good size .
You can even try the chicken with garlic naan when you prefer bread over rice items . The naan had decent portion size . Although i paired it with palak paneer , the least impressive among all others . Although it was good but there is nothing special to be discussed about just cottage cheese cooked in thick paste of spinach.
From the Chinese section we attacked the Chicken and Egg pan-fried noodles with Chicken in black pepper sauce. The noodles were simple yet delicious. Lots of chicken chunks were visible through the noodles .
Pan fried noodles are usually made by applying minimal amount of stiring and keeping the noodles for longer duration inside the pan to turn them crispier . Chicken in black pepper sauce showed us just another look of the most versatile protein . The pieces of chicken in this preparation were small but held lots of flavours . It was mildly spicy and aromatic .
Fish in Butter sauce was the last thing we tried out and it lived upto the expectations made by its contemporaries . The gravy was shinny ,whitish and lemony . It was well cooked and too soft , just a touch of spoon was enough to break it into pieces.
As always a meal in incomplete without the dessert and what better than the old school classic , Darsaan with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Crispy deep fried thin strips made from flour dough, mixed with lots of honey serves as a quick yet tasty dessert when paired with a scoop of ice cream .
