Dum Dum is located in North 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It’s a renowned junction station for Sealdah line. Metro, bus station, airport all are nearby to this junction. Many passengers use this line to reach to Bongaon to get Bangladesh border so easily and cheaply!

This station is in my locality. The most busiest station or better to say junction station of Kolkata train system. From here you can avail local trains to different places which includes bongaon, kalyani, shantipur , krishnanagar, dankuni , bandel and many more. Being near to the sealdah station many long distance trains or express also pass through this station. Very busy station throughout the day . The kolkata metro to garia and dakhineswar also is available just beside this station

Dum Dum Junction railway station was opened in 1862, as part of the Calcutta Sealdah–Kusthia line of Eastern Bengal Railway. Eastern Bengal Railway worked on the eastern side of the Hooghly River, which in those days there was no bridge. In 1882–84, the Bengal Central Railway Company constructed two lines: one from Dum Dum to Khulna (now in Bangladesh) via Bangaon, and the other linking Ranaghat and Bangaon. The Bengal Central Railway was formed in 1881 to construct and operate a line to Khulna, and was merged with Eastern Bengal Railway in 1903. In 1932, the Calcutta Chord line was built over the Willingdon Bridge, joining Dum Dum and Dankuni. This line provided a direct connection between the eastern and western sides of the Hooghly River, and made Dum Dum Junction an important railway junction. In 1957–62, the 33.06 km (21 mi) long 5 ft 6 in (1,676 mm) broad gauge line from Barasat to Hasnabad was constructed. This line further enhanced the importance of Dum Dum Junction as a railway junction. Dum Dum Junction railway station was electrified in 1963–65. Today, it is a major railway junction in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area, and serves as an important interchange for trains between the eastern and western sides of the Hooghly River. It is also a major station for suburban trains in Kolkata. Dum Dum Junction railway station is a significant part of the railway history of Kolkata and West Bengal. It has played an important role in the development of the region, and continues to be a major transportation hub today.
