I still remember this place as i was little boy come with my grandpa for a quick evening dinner and a coffee. The place still remains the same old
Should try “vallai appam” , dosa and coffee
Highly recommend for tourists
Idli vada samber is a must try. Another old eatery.
Great food similar to home prepared food. The taste of all items were good. As mentioned in the name board, they are chutney experts. Podi dosa is a must try. We visited for breakfast around 08:30am and Pongal got over. Overall it was a great food and dining experience.
Best in class tiffen items. Quality and quantity is very good. Very authentic food centre. They have a very big fan base in and around the area. Their coffee is the most deadliest. Must have.
A good traditional small tiffin center. Their ghee ellu podi dosa is a must try. So crispy and tasty dosa. Elu podi oothapam and Vada was also good. It’s a small congested restaurant so don’t expect a fine dining. Very near to meenakshi temple entrance.
One of the oldest and famous hotel in madurai for their Vellai (White) appam & other dosai varieties, spicy green chilli chutney.
It is like a old small house turned into a hotel with a seating capacity of 20 people only in slightly congested way. Situated at North West corner of Meenakshi temple Street. Landmark is Hotel Sabareesh PLAZA. Monday holiday.. They are open only in the morning and evening just for Tiffen items & coffee. This hotel is managed, cooked, served and cleaned by upper middle aged / old aged men. Service was immediate and just took 5 - 10 mins waiting time for serving. Very homely place and old people are very enthusiastic.
Feedback : Vellai appam was moderate. It is just crispy outside & Soft inside like any other bonda. Didn't taste much. Generally Ullundu vadai is much tastier than this Vellai appam..
Ghee dosa was ultimate just because of the flavourful ghee. It was like in-house butter melted to ghee. Podi uttappam was also quite good. Big and full filling. Chutney & sambar had normal taste. Bill was around Rs. 180 -200 for these 3 items.
Mostly i saw local aged people coming in for Vellai appam & Bajji for evening snack. Next door Famous Strong Filter coffee shop was closed when we went around 7 pm.. Their timings is different, i think.
Dont expect too much sanitation, western or junk food. Just enjoy the traditional Indian fried + dosai cuisine and come.
Gopu iyengar meals - separate unit is closed. Only this small outlet is operating. The owners can renovate this famous place and give a better working place for their dedicated old staff.
Best traditional tiffin centre in Madurai near MEENAKSHI AMMAN TEMPLE north tower corner MUST TRY : vellai appam, thavalai vadai, adai and avial, dosa is just awesome chutney is best in madurai ask for green chilli chutney
If you are looking for quality tamilnadu vegetarian tiffin food and do not expect great ambience and service then Madurai Gopu Iyengar is a good choice. They do not serve lunch. They are open between 7&10 am in the mornings and 3&8pm in the evenings. Monday is a holiday. Their signature dish is vellaiyappam and Brinjal bajji which are available in the evenings.
Had always wanted to try this eatery since it was recommended highly by one of the groups in FB.
However, every time i used to go, this eatery used to be closed but i had the luck on my side this time around.
Ordered two vellai appams. It looked like a huge bonda but it was deep fried. Mind you, each one is considerably big in size. The sides were kaara chutney(i believe it was made of green chillis), coconut chutney and sambhar. The kaara chutney blew me away. It went really well with the appams. The sambhar was also nice. I was done with my dinner with those appams.
The seating is little cramped.
Had a coffee outside the eatery which they serve separately. The coffee was tasty as well.
Traditional place to have tiffin items
