We visited this place cause our research said this cafe is known for it's coffee and falls in the top 5 best coffee makers in India... We opted to have breakfast here. Ordered for diff dishes like idli sambar, dosa, some bun puri dish that is famous. It was a good one. But the overall vibe of the cafe is gloomy. It has this AC compartment but it's not so posh. Looks like they don't really focus on the look and feel of the cafe. Additionally, there are food items like indian desserts and cakes available at this cafe. Their coffee was quite strong. Diff in taste but a good one.

Must try: Veg meals. It is so tasty. They serve you in banana leaf. Pocket friendly hotel. Service was fast. Waiter was friendly and kind. They have good parking space for private vehicles.

The New Taj Mahal Cafe in Mangalore is a delightful spot for breakfast that offers a nostalgic journey through the flavors of the region. During my visit, I was keen to try some local breakfast options, and I was not disappointed. The Mangalore Buns were a standout. These fluffy, slightly sweet buns were a delightful start to the morning, offering a unique local twist to the traditional breakfast bread. They were a perfect balance of sweet and savoury. What truly sets the New Taj Mahal Cafe apart is its ability to evoke a sense of nostalgia. The ambiance and the flavors of their breakfast offerings transport you to a time when breakfast was a leisurely affair, and local flavors were cherished. If you're in Mangalore and want to experience a nostalgic breakfast with a taste of the region, the New Taj Mahal Cafe should be on your list. Their Mangalore Buns, Ragi Idli, and other local breakfast options make for a memorable morning meal.

The breakfast was very good and the service great. Tried many breakfast dishes and all were tasty. The coffee needs to be worked on. The ghee dosa was a bit too thick for a Bangalorean's liking.

This is one of the oldest restaurants in Mangalore, and it's always bustling with a lively atmosphere, much like a hive of activity. It's among the few places that open early in the morning. They offer a variety of vegetarian options, all of good quality. Plus, their coffee is fantastic.

This restaurant is almost 100 years old in mangalore, taste was excellent I had banana halwa and thuppa dosa

One of the oldest restaurants of Mangalore, Known for breakfast and evening snacks. It's an old building with AC . Service is good and quick. Tuppa Dose (Ghee Dose), Goli baje, Mangalore Buns - Recommended. Their Strong tea/ Coffee is also good. They also have sweets. Banana Halwa is recommended. If you want to try, they have other flavored Halwa s as well. Digital payments are accepted. Good Four wheeler parking space.

The name is a legacy in local cuisine and it still holds its own. The Rotti+Bhaji and the Tuppa Dosa are a must-try for their distinctive tastes. The filter coffee is certified addictive which many long-timers can vouch for. A variety of breakfast options to suit all tastes .

Idily with sambar were good. Vada tasted average. We ordered Veg pulao but it was very less quantity and more costly. Masala dosa also good. For 6 person we spent nearly 700/-.

I love this place for the chutney, the magic ingredient in delivering the overall experience. All local varieties are excellent from buns to bhajji. Upma is a good try. Traditional Udupi style hotel with good humoured service staff. Restaurant is old, but AC section is new with adequate parking facility.

Definitely a place for a hot cup of coffee and fluffy Buns and also I would suggest everyone to try out their weird yet the ultimate combo teekroti and tove(puri and dal).

New Tajmahal Cafe needs no introduction, it's a legendary breakfast cafe in Mangalore. We ordered their signature tuppa dose, goli baje, biscuit roti, Mangalore bun, Banana halwa and filter coffee. I really loved tuppa dose, goli baje, Mangalore bun and banana halwa. Biscuit roti was kind of okay, maybe because it's cold and filter coffee was also okayish. This place is always crowded, so be prepared.

Hope the same standard is maintained come what may. A middle class friendly hotel that suits all classes. More hygiene than neighbouring counterparts.

Located in the heart of the city at Kodailbail, this was our first pitstop in Mangalore. It is one of the oldest places in the city for Konkan & Udipi style breakfast and snacks. We tried the MOODE SAMBAR, KOTTIGE, BISCUIT ROTI, SANJEERA & TUPPA DOSE. Kottige and Moode are the distant cousins of idli which are steamed in Jackfruit leaves and Screwpine leaves respectively. The steam imparts a nice flavour. Sanjeera is like a sweet kachori and Biscuit Roti is it's savoury version made of suji. Tuppa stands for ghee and it's their signature dosa made with dollops of ghee. Pricing is extremely reasonable. A major letdown is the heat wave from the kitchen, inspite of the fans the place seems like a furnace inside. But leaving that aside a must visit place in Mangalore.

Great meal @70 . They provide puri, rice either white or boiled , cup of curd , three types of vegetable curry/ sambar, dal butter milk, sometimes kheer, at the end banana. It is all provided on a banana leaf. Good seating facility. Enough waiters for service.

An institution in itself, the name used to bring a smile on my dad's face and the other elders in the family. I have been visiting this place Everytime I visiy Mangalore.
This time I felt that the quality of the food stuff has dipped, tried biscuit rotti, chapati song, rotti bhaji, tuppe dosa.
The coffee, however, is superb... The best one can have anywhere.
New Taj Mahal Cafe is a popular breakfast place at Mangalore. The place normally stays quite crowded. We tried the tuppa dose, biscuit rotti, sanjeera, moode tove and kottige sambar. I liked the moode tove and sanjeera (sweet). The sambar was little different from what you usually get in bangalore and I liked the flavour.

New taj mahal cafe is a very popular breakfast joint in Mangalore. I tried their Tuppa dose,Biscuit Rotti,Sanjeera, Moode tove & Kottige sambar. Food is good no doubt. Tuppa dosa is quite heavy. Liked the sanjeera too. Sambar served with food is different in taste. Crowded during peak hours so be on time or else have to wait.

This is a one of the branches of Taj Mahal restaurants, which is one of the oldest and most famous restaurants in Mangalore. The restaurant is well-known for its TuPPa Dosa, Coffee, Buns, Poori, Semige Tove and other delicacies. I have been its patron all my life and this place does have my emotional connect like some of other reviewers in this forum. I do make it a point to visit this place every time I come to Mangalore.

Here is my review:

Location – Located in the heart of the city, Kodialbail.

Parking – there is parking available and you would usually find a spot unless its peak evening time.

Ambience – (2/5) – overall seating ambience is good, nothing great. The areas around wash basin begs for more cleanliness and hygiene. The restaurant was fully air-conditioned during its initial days when the restaurant was newly setup; which was later removed. I only wish they had continued the air conditioning since Mangalore in quite sultry for a large part of the year.

Food (4/5) – The food is mostly authentic Mangalorean and very tasty. Most of the dishes have Konkani (GSB) origin and tuned to local palate. You will not be disappointed by the quality of food if you have a liking for Mangalorean fare.

Price (2/5) – After having tasty food, you will be surprised when you see the bill. Some of the items are highly over-priced. While TuPPa Dosa and Coffee is reasonably priced at Rs.40 and Rs.20 respectively, a single Poori or single Buns will make your wallet lighter by Rs.30.

Service (3/5) – I have seen a huge variation in the quality of service rendered by different waiters. While some of them are good, some of them are quite snobby (as observed by some reviewers).

Value for Money (2.5/5) – The restaurant falls low on expectations from value for money point of view. While the pricing would have been apt for an air-conditioned restaurant with good service and super hygienic ambience, these parameters lowers the overall value for money for this restaurant. If you stick to the usual TuPPa Dosa, meals or regular non-special items, you will find the pricing to be more reasonable.

This place is serving ppl since 1926. But with such a rich legacy the food which they serve is very basic. I had ordered pathrode, kottige, banana halwa and coffe. Kottige was ok sambhar was above avg. Pathrode was bad, I started itching sensation below my tongue so couldn't eat beyond two bites and coffe is too simple nothing worth mentioning here.

One of the best places for a proper mangalorean breakfast. An iconic place in Mangalore which is famous for their coffee and halwa too. Chakkuli, holige and halwa are Taj Mahal specialities. Mangalore buns are yummy along with their coffee. A good breakfast experience.

The place holds a very special place in my heart.
I was always brought here by my grandparents on my visit to my native in Mangalore.
Ever since a small kid the biscuit roti was my favourite and after having tried it this time after a span of almost 8 years the taste and smell still feels the same.
It tasted amazing
Had the filter coffee
Perfect blend of bitter and sweet taste.
And not to forget the tuppa dosa served with chutney and sambar. Simple yet filling and extremely tasty.
Loved the place.
There are some places which doesn't necessarily need a fancy ambience to flock people to the place. They just have to maintain their taste and standard and this place is definitely one amongst those.
Dilip Bhandarkar
Parota Kurma, Pulav, Roast Tuppa dosa, Plain Dosa, Theek Roti are the best which one can get over here. Anything from the above along with the famous Taj Mahal coffee is good delicacy for an evening meal. Except for some of the waiters the ambience is good.

This restaurant situated near to '''Ocean pearl' hotel has a heritage and is specially known for its 'banana chips' and 'buns'. It has a good spread of its own sweets like macaroons, mysore paak, banana halwa, wheat halwa and many more..
Restaurant is decent and airy, decent parking space in front.

What we ordered.
Cauliflower pakoda - decently made. They also had options of brinjal and banana pakodas.
Bun - banana based buns are the speciality here.
Chai - very well made
Malpua - sweet was a little chewy, easily not the best of what we ordered
Sada dosa - very well made, light and crispy, the watery coconut chutney was absolutely tasty.
Sambhar can be avoided.
Onion uttappa - made well and crispy. Additional mint chutney was just perfect.
The dishes were absolute pocket friendly.

Ratings-
Location - 3.5
Ambience - 2.8
Service - 3
Food - 3.3
Value for money - 3.9
OVERALL - 3.3

Tip - don't miss the buns and the banana chips.

Ambience : 5/10
Food : 7/10
Location : 7/10

So I have heard a lot about this place for traditional mangalorian breakfast. So the traditional dishes which I tried are kottige, Sanjeera and rice pundi.
Among the one which I liked the most is the rice pundi , it was served with hot dal which enriched the flavour.
kottige was also good which was made in banana leaf and is worth tasting . The sweet which I tried is sanjeera which is also good.
Overall if you want to have a taste of mangalorian breakfast, do try this outlet...

Nice restaurant to have your breakfast. The prices of few were a overpriced. The food is decent.. Mangalore buns are the ones you need to have here. Masala dosa is bad. Coffee's price got me high but not the taste. The waiters are a bit creepy.

We have been here for breakfast during our Mangalore trip. Based on Zomato's customers reviews and comments we decided to try the one of the top rated place to eat in Mangalore. The New Taj Mahel Cafe!!
One of the oldest restrurent in Mangalore since 1926.

To be honest, I didn't find this place as so great and friendly in terms staff service and behavior.

As per Zomato, this restaurant is famous for many items and one of them is also mentioned in zomato. Poori bhaji and Roti. While ordering attendant says poori bhaji and roti both are same. I was shock. So why to mention differently even in Zomato site under " Top dishes people order ".

While asking rather clarifying two time from waiter, we got the same response. I was shocked. Since I asked two times about difference about Poori and Roti, Waiter behaved bit rudely and said the same sentence. Both are same. I went to main desk (billing) and enquire, Even they said the same as what waiter said. I was totally shocked, and kept thinking how can be Poor and Rori be same.

We still order 3 poori bhaji and one Roti plate.
We were amaze that, actually there were no difference in poori bhaji and Roti in this restaurant. Because Poori Bhaji and Roti were served and both were same. Am still thinking how🤔

We ordered, Poori bhaji, Roti plate, Masala dosa, Kesari Bath and idle wrap with some leaf. Don't remember the name of the item.

Food taste - Very normal nothing great as reviews were given and mentioned in Zomato site.

Ambience - Normal (Non-AC) with decent tables. But nothing extraordinary!!

Service - Very bad, staff member was rude and not at all yet to understand customers needs.

They have parking space for 4 and 2 wheelers!!!

NOT Recommended this restaurant to anyone.

Ambience - 2.5/5
Service - 1.5/5
Food 2.5/5

HAPPY eating guys!!!
Portia Acharya Saurabh Acharya

One of the oldest Restaurants in Mangalore since 1926. Situated at the roadside clearly visible to pedestrian as well. New touch is given to the entire ambience nice and outside since that royalty is maintained. Natural light lightnens the entire space at daytime. Service is fast and quick. Food was delightful the proper Mangaloreans breakfast menu is available. Specially the Kottige, mude, pundi and all stuff's also the Biscuit roti and sanjeera tasted fresh and tasty. We enjoyed having our breakfast to the fullest. Since they're famous for their filter coffee they truly had that perfect aroma of coffee which made our day. They also have sweet section which again servers the must try manglore sweets. Overall it was a good experience.

Good food vegatarian (non AC). They have friendly servers. They have sweet stall too. They even have parking outside. Always filled with customers

This place was among the top rated places to eat in Mangalore and the food is really good indeed but child labour is a bummer. Sad to see kids clearing the dishes and cleaning the tables. Big thumbs down.

New Taj Mahal Cafe is located near Nav bharat Circle. Best place for breakfast if in Mangalore. All the south indian stuff is good. Their chutney deserves a special mention, along with Mangalore buns and biscuit roti, which is like a milder version of kachori. Tried something called tuppa dosa during recent visit which is a crisper version of uttapam. Seating is non ac, can get hot in summers.

If you are looking for traditional mangalorean breakfast, then this is the place where your search will end. This place has old cafe vibes and serves the authentic recipes such as Kottike (Idli wrapped in jackfruit leaves) and Mangalorean buns are the best. Do try medhu-vada , it's too good. Ambience is old yet neat and friendly. Service is ok too. Go for the filter coffee along with these dishes, their coffee too has a authentic feel to it.
Food : 4/5
Service : 3.5/5
Ambience : 3/5

They just serve the most filling and beautiful Thali for lunch. Very neat and clean dining space and very pocket friendly. And they are very easy to locate.

Pretty Old Restaurant and yet maintained well.
Service was quick enough.
Ordered:
Buns(Mangalore)-Despite being fried, they had little to no-oil on the outer layer.Crispy from outside and fluffy from inside.A unique combination of taste of sweeteness and cumin seeds.Went well with the chutney. Its good and it's different too from the traditional buns we eat.
Tuppa Dosa - Pretty thick and Crispy on one side with lots of ghee.Found it to have tinge of sweeteness. It was average only.Served with Chutney and Sambhar(this was good).
Teekh Rotti - This was crispy and tasted well with Chutney.Although, didn't find to be spicy at all,as the same suggests.
Banana Halwa - Does not exactly look like.halwa,it looks more like a sweet.Sowewhat similar to Karachi Halwa,Banana Halwa was little thick and not that soft.Made in huge amount of ghee which does give it good taste.
Filter Coffee - To end the meal, this could be a decent option.Wont say the coffee was good,it tasted very banege.Coffee's taste could be enhanced by adding little more milk.

Overall, decent restaurant and very economical too.

Do visit atleast this place, when in Mangalore, atleast for Buns and Mangalore Halwa.

Delicious Mangalore buns and coffee .... One of the ideal places to have breakfast in Mangalore.
Tasted Puri bhaji and other Mangalorean dishes here ... They are just out of the world.

Great food! Must try the rasam they serve here. I loved the filter coffee. It was one of the best ones we've had. The place doesn't have a menu. The food is fresh and limited. Isn't air conditioned, It's full of hustle bustle. Great place for breakfast and light snack.

One among the Signature place for typical mangalore breakfast is taj mahal cafe. There's a limited parking space in front of the Cafe. The seating is a typical darshini types. These foods will definitely welcome you to mangalore with a bliss.
Taste - 3. 5/5
Ambience - 3.5/5
Service - 3.5/5
Highly crowded due to popular demand of the outlet. In addition to breakfast, lunch & dinner & snacks, they also sell sweets.

Service depends upon the person who serves. We had a very rough guy; the only thing he didn't do was simply throw off the food at our table. Have not seen such a server/bearer in our life. He literally said he has no time that he has to hurry up serving everyone & we had to bear with his speed.

Anyway, the food was good & its a must try when you're in Mangalore

Great food or not, greasy plates on which food is served are not acceptable! Basic hygiene is a must. First and the last visit today. I shudder to think what the kitchen is like..
Bipin Jacob
The only thing 'New' about New Taj Mahal is the name. I am not a food snob; but if you choose to ignore the dismal hygiene levels and below average ambience and service, then it is 'good' food.
The plates are greasy, the cleanliness in the restaurant area is poor, and the floor in particular is revolting. I can imagine what the kitchen and dish-washing areas are like.

As a comparison, the famous Girimanja Restaurant is far smaller and older than this and despite specialising in seafood, manages to maintain a level of odour-free cleanliness that New Taj Mahal can only aspire to.

Yes the food was tasty, but no better than any other half-decent place in Mangalore (the KSRTC canteen in Bejai, trumps New Taj Mahal in both hygiene and taste. Try it.)

It's the sheer apathy on the part of the management that allows a place that probably started with good standards to deteriorate to the state it is in now. For a city that is often ranked among the cleanest in India, I think it's high-time we called out New Taj Mahal for what it has become. Mangalore deserves better!
Ajey Belsare
Probably the best value for money veg meal was available here. Rassam was very tasty. Dosas are okay. Filter coffee too good. But the best part was the waiter named "Krishna" who served us. He was extremely courteous. Do ask for his services when you visit.

Buns buns buns 💕 the best buns in town . Just love them . The puri baji also deserves a mention. No fancy place , just good and quick food . I love their sheera too. 😋

This place has been in my bucket list ever since I saw food show in YouTube about Mangalore buns and how this place makes the best ones. And how can it get more special when finally it was my gf who took me to this place.

Visited this place on Gandhi Jayanthi evening and the place was busting with waiters and diners alike. Ordered Mangalore buns, Goli baje but sadly we couldn't get Goli baje at that time.

The buns were crispy on outside and very soft inside with sweet banana flavour. Prepared freshly, hot with coconut chutney this could easily serve as a sumptuous breakfast or evening snack

The price was as inflated as the buns themselves - one plate costed 70 rupees!!

Ambiance - 3/5
Food quality - 4/5
Bang for buck - 3.5/5
Service - 4/5

My First day in mangalore and as usual the first place we dropped by was the,”NEW TAJ MAHAL CAFE”. It was more of an antiquated and shabby old fashioned cafe or rather passé. The food here, especially the mangalore buns is something you must try. And the poori bhaji is also a good dish to have here. Before leaving don’t forget to take a packet of cashew macaroons for the rest of the day😁. Over all an ideal place for breakfast or lunch.

Thank you and Bon Appétit.

During my stay in mangalore, Taj Mahal was the goto place for breakfasts. I consider mangalore bun served at taj as the benchmark. In a word legendary place.

Very popular joint in Managlore a must visit if one wants to try typical South Indian brunch or breakfast. All in the menu is worth a try and one won't be disappointed, these have been doing this for generations now. Strong operational strength and even there is consistency in food. My rating is certainly 5 for the taste but the service isn't that great and for a successful legendary place like this the hygiene much below average.

I would strongly recommend the management that they focus more on hygiene. I wish you all the best.

I was in Mangalore for a single day and my only intention, apart from office work, was to taste some authentic Mangaloren food for lunch.

Given the paucity of time, our guide took us to New Taj Mahal Coffee Cafe. It is a large non-AC restaurant with people quickly have their meals. It a pure vegetarian restaurant with people can savour the authentic Mangaloren food on a banana leaf.

I ordered for a Puri Bhaji while my colleagues ordered for Masala Dosa while another choose to have their Thali. For a minute for the look and feel of it it may disadvantageus however the being cost effective and at an important junction ensures it keep running continuously.

The Puri Bhaji was splendid. It's a urad dal Puri served with aloo-chana Bhaji and chutney for accompaniment. The Dosa was moderate while the Thali has 3 different types of vegetables served with Puri, rice and dal. Apart from the Puri Bhaji rest all dishes were ordinary.

Visiting Mangalore sometimes would require suggestions next time for lunch/dinner.

This is one place no one should miss when in Mangalore. We went yesterday evening with the thought of having some dosa and filter kaapi.
The place is quite austre in looks but please don't let that fool you. No menu card here but the waiter will tell you that and some more and even give you some of his suggestions.
Try the south Indian idli steamed in jackfruit leaves with sambhar. Do not miss the mushroom masala Dosa. The stuffing will want you asking for more.
The tuppa dosa or ghee roasted dosa is the speciality and we had that too.
Buns and daalitoy is something else you must try.
Top it with filter coffee and we couldn't move after this over indulgences of your taste buds.
But we are not complaining at all.
Took some banana chips and macaroons for people back at home.

Mangalore's answer to the darshini. It has been around for 3 generations now and mangaloreans swear by their coffee and snacks. The Poori bhaji, buns, upma are all good here.
Good place for breakfast and evening snacks.
Been here couple of days back. Service is not that great and ambiance is also kinda boring. Been visiting here when I was a little kid but recently visited after a long gap of 12yrs.
Had ordered fried rice and meals...
Meals had a soup and masala papad wich was like papad and ketchup.
Fried rice had cut fruits in it. This was something new fr me. My fried rice had oranges, mousambi, apple and pineapples in it... also the fruits were not ripe. All tasted sour.. although the fried rice itself after removing the fruits tasted good..
3 rating is only coz was super hungry and the food helped us from our hunger.

Used to be an iconic eatery but not anymore! The food is nice nothing exceptional but for the quantity, service and ambience it is too overpriced!!The tea was so strong and bitter seemed like it was boiling forever!!It's a place for a quick bite not a place you would like to spend time! The hygiene standards of the washrooms are pathetic!very unclean! There are much better places in 2 km radius of this place go there instead!!

I visited Taj mahal hotel with my husband for breakfast. The food was not good, and the service was worst... They will not respond properly for any order or for any other info about the local food which is not common for outsiders. We ordered neer dosa and other local Mangalore's break fast. But really disappointed. Also they will charge extra 10bugs for one bowl sambar, where it is free in other hotels and the taste and quality of that sambar also was pathetic. Compared to this felt Janatha Deluxe is good. There if you ask waiters they will explain about the food which you are going to order and the quality was also good.

Avoid this place if you looking for good ambianve or good food. We had breakfast here but simply didn't like anything at all. Service is bad too.
Service - 1/5
Ambiance - 2/5
Food - 2/5

3.75/4.
Good vegetarian food for reasonable price in a typical Darshini like ambience.
We tried their cashew upkari, moode idli, mangalore bund and goli baje.
Mangalore buns and goli baje were brilliant! Service is a bit slow but the food is good so I'm not complaining much. They also sell some good pathrode.

The place has lost its initial charm, that used to be when it was situated in carstreet. Totally overpriced dishes. Only thing that is worth is the famous tajmahal special coffee. Taste is also not worth the amount paid. Overall not worth it.

Had masala dosa and idli vada I have been here in the morning the service was very very quick as usual the flavour and crisp of the dosa was good I was very happy with everything here

One of the oldest places in Mangalore. This is the renovated version that is running now. It’s a typical no frills restaurant that churns out food that too with speed and efficiency.

This is one of the oldest restaurants in Mangalore . It's seem Mangalore transition from a sleepy town to a tier two city . It's the most centrally located restuarant well connected by road . It's the ideal place to get a sumptuous breakfast . Evening chai with Goli baaje and dahi vada is to die for . Not big on ambience , it's retained the same old look . The prices have increased but only marginally . Their sweets and savouries are one of the best in Mangalore . Only grouse I have with this amazing place is the parking space and that it gets crowded in a jiffy . But I guess the latter problem is more to do with the fame of the place . Definitely a must try .

New Tajmahal Cafe is one place which don't need review specialy for GSB people around Mangalore.
This is one of the oldest Cafe in Mangalore.
Must try here is Teek Roti (similar to puri) which seems to be exclusive item which you won't find elsewhere. All other items like Tupa dose, masale dose, buns, upma etc are good and served Hot.
Coffee is something special for Mangaloren.
Very arrogant, the place is crowed. Food is good but there better places than this. Service and hygiene factors are way below standards. Not worth your time...

The best and the most iconic place in Mangalore to start the day. New Taj Mahal Cafe is the best place to have your breakfast. The place serves local specialities like Idli Vada Sambhar, Masala Dosa, Tuppa Dosa, Puri Bhaji, Poha, Buns etc. After a heavy breakfast one has to have a cup of coffee to end the meal. The place has a very casual ambiance and the service is fast and excellent, food is amazing and the staff is very friendly.

I am reviewing this place because it is more than just a restaurant.

We all have our so called 'Adda's in college where we always hung out, sentimental values attached. The Taj Mahal Cafe serves the same to the citizens of Mangalore.

From decades, old timers meet at this restaurant - one of the only ones in its time to open before dawn.

I go to this place more out of nostalgia and for the Buns they serve. Yes, they are really good!
You can try out other snack items. I'm sure you'll have eaten better. But be sure to visit it sometime - especially in the early hours of the day

Wanted to try out Authentic Manglorean food and this joint was right next to where I stayed . Although it's a pretty old place , it's always busy and quite pocket friendly . Tried out their meals (Rs 70 , extra rice Rs 20) , and it was quite good . The dishes were however on the low spice level category . I was not familiar with the names of the served side dishes , however had a very nice Mangalorean food experience here . I regret not having tried 'Neer Dosa' but rill definitely pay a visit sometime in the near future .

Food : 3.5/5
Service : 3/5
Ambiance : 1.5/5
Value for money : 4.5/5

- Foodie From Madras

It was quite a nostalgic visit for my dad as he was visiting the place with us after 6 years. He loved his sunday breakfasts here. We went directly to Cafe Taj Mahal once they got down the train. Serves traditional South Indian breakfast menu, Cafe Taj Mahal is another "hotel" which lives upto it's legacy. Will recommend this anyday if you are planning for a South Indian breakfast.

Many more sundays to go.

Absolutely not worth your time and hunger, forget about the money. Ordered Masala Dosa, Puri saagu, Idli vada, Buns and Rava Dosa. None of them are any better than average. Cannot understand why so much people come to this place and why this place is crowded.

You can easily skip this place. It's better to be hungry than have food from here.

Governed by crook and greedy ppl!!!

Service here is pathetic and chaos. . No one has a grip on what is happening and what needs to be done. . I had to wait idle for nearly 20 mins by getting ignored repeatedly whenever I called them. .

Finally when I was blessed, I ordered buns, vada, dosa and pomegranate juice.

Buns was great, hot and tasty. Vada was soggy and was smaller that my little finger.
Dosa was the worst I ever had, uncooked and bland. The juice was served in a small paper cup, which was in the diluted form and hardly got any taste of the fruit, for which they charged Rs 50.

It was a complete rip off. They even charged Rs 10 for the Sambhar they served. It shows their greed and desperation for money over customer satisfaction.

The plate in which the food was served, it was dirty and had stains from the previous servings(refer the pic).

Such so called restaurants should be shut Down forever if they can't serve their customers with good food and service.
I wouldn't never come back again for the reason that it causes be great distress when I get robbed!!!

Went there to grab a bite with mum. I ordered a masala dosa found a hair in the dosa. Waiter was kind enough to get mea replacement but I didn't feel like eating after that. Service is slow but good. They need to check on the hygiene in the kitchen.
Maithily Arulraja
Had been here on an evening and ordered cutlet, cucumber idly and coffee. Cutlet was good, coffee was pathetic and cucumber idly was a disaster!!! Pocket friendly but the taste was not upto the mark. Service was average. Would try it one more time to try their other dishes.

Every city has a couple of landmark eateries. Taj Mahal is an epic place in Mangalore. The biscuit roti, khashi halwa and bajjis are my favourite picks. If you want to try a vegetarian Mangaloreon style meal visit Taj Mahal Cafe in the afternoon.
The place opens before your alarm would ring, a great option for joggers to catch a hot cup of coffee in the early morning .
The rava dosa's steal my heart every single time . You will have to deal with the tradition of finishing your food and vacating the table.
A visit to this place in the morning guarantees a satisfying day for your tummy.

Taj Mahal is not a restaurant but way of life for most Mangaloreans. Restaurant opens up early in the morning (5.30am) and serves piping hot idli sambar, tovve , buns, biscuit roti n theek rotti and menu later gets larger with time. You get best filter coffee in Mangalore.

High price, good food, ordinary restaurant, no ac, service is not good. Not a value for money restaurant. 💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤

Best breakfast in town! Been there two days in a row. Great food, great service, decent prices, easily accessible, ample parking. What else can one ask for? Legendary place serving high quality food with efficient service. Do not miss! Super tasty breakfast items!

A place that serves traditional manglorean cuisine and is really light on the pocket. Please don't expect a very modern ambience and air-conditioning. It's a really old place that is again a kind of a legendary place. It's always crowded at any point the day. Even at 6 in the morning, you'll see a lot of people in here. They have a lot of sweets and savouries too that you can take home. They offer a wide range of choices for you to choose from. We tried a lot of dishes and loved it.
We tried the Neer dosa, it was really good. i totally recommend it to any dosa lover. The mangalore buns were amazing. Do take it. The pathrode was good. We also had the capsicum and the cauliflower podi which is nothing but our normal bajjis and they were good. We also had the cucumber idly which was a sweet and my mom loved it. It's made with cucumber and jaggery and tastes delicious.Something that we had tasted before. We had the muude idly that is idly batter that's wrapped in a leaf and cooked and is served with chutney and sambhar. The kadla upkari was delicious which is channa that's tossed in cocunut oil and some tempering. We got to try a lot of dishes and it was packed with a lot of local flavour and i loved it :)

I have been visiting Taj Mahal, near Hampanakatta signal, Mangalore after morning walk. Today (24 Jan 2016), I had bad experience with Cashier, first he was raged for giving 500 denomination by number of customers, he was very rude and throwing change towards customers (Not only me, everyone). This is bad a reputed TajMahal hotel which is known for his food & services.

We have been recently to Mangalore and this place was on our list at first place, so after reaching mangalore first place we went was this cafe.
Reaching there for the first time, you could get the feel, that the place is too old and that makes us feel sure, that food will be good.
The waiter knew that we are there for the first time, so we asked him to bring the best -
1. Mangalore Bun - It was a big poori kind of but sweet in taste with green chutney, it was awesome, my wife felt in love with it. 5/5
2. Biscuit Roti - This was also kind of poori, but more of stuffing inside like kachori. 3.5/5
3. Vada Sambar - Sambhar was not so great. 2/5
4. Coffee - It was great 5/5
5. Tea - It was good too 4/5
Our experience with Bun was so good, that in 3 days we went to this place 3 times and took the Buns every time.

This is THE place to be in Mangalore if you want to treat your taste buds with authentic Mangalorean/Konkani cusine. I visited on a busy Saturday morning. Tasted the famous Mangalore bun, masala biscuit and also Ghee dosa, Avulakki, Koli Bajji.

The taste of the bun was out of the world and it melted in my mouth. Equally the masala biscuit with chutney gave the spicy shade. Both these are a definite try here.

Avulaki( flattened rice upma) , a roasted rice dish with chopped coconut slices was more sweeter than expected. Try this only if you have a sweet tooth.

Finished my breakfast with a best filter coffee, aroma of which I still can imagine around me.

Overall it was a great experience. The pricing of all the dishes was very nominal.
Sanchit Kamath.
A perfect place for konkani's to have breakfast in their way. The ambience isn't that much great, but the food is good and the filter coffee which they offer too is good
Harish Mallya
One of THE places to be if you are in search of Konkan breakfast. Having a history of several decades Taj Mahal cafe is considered as a respected hotel. For many localites, day does not start without having coffee and a munchy quick breakfast at this cafe. The must taste : Rotti, Buns, Uppit, Biscuit Rotti, Tuppad Dosa (ghee Dosa). Don't expect idlis and masala dosas to be great here. You don't get a great lunch or anything that great when it comes to north Indian dishes. Its a place to go for breakfast or evening snacks. Hope the tradition of the best Konkan breakfast continues.

Location: just 2min walk from PVS circle, along ocean pearl

Dont expect ambience or AC over here... its just an ordinary place..some may not feel comfortable.I went for diiner , since i was late i had meals over here...

PLANTAIN LEAF MEALS (dinner), happy to see plantain leaf in mangalore after some long time..Food was decent and good. U can try once for taste..The cost of meals was 70bucks, and 100% worth for wat u pay for it.They can still improve a lot which ll help them for better business..

One of the legendary food places of Mangalore! Make sure you go there early in the morning for breakfast as the food is best at that time. The lunch is not that great.

When you're around, try their tuppa dosa, goli baje, moode and other local specialities. Just ask the waiter and he will guide you (assuming you're coming here from outside Mangalore)

Prices are a bit on the higher side though, so be forewarned.
Vignesh S
One of the over hyped restaurant in Mangaluru. Earlier this restaurant was based out of car street and moved to kodialbail few years ago. When restaurant was moved the quality deteriorated and cost increased.

For the quality of food this place happens to be unnecessarily expensive.

Hygiene : 2/5
Cost : 4/5
Food :1/5
Ambience : 1/5
Pramod
Substandard restaurant with a high cost. We ate breakfast here once. Idlies were half cooked and coffee was really bad. Will never visit again
Harpreet Singh Chadha
A perfect breakfast place I guess the food was so good hence we ate so much that we didn't need lunch that day.. Must try is tuppa dosa, goli baje and sheera
Muralidhar Baliga
If Breakfast is your favorite meal of the day then one will love this joint.
My favorites are 'Theek roti', Sheera, Thupa Dosa and then finish up with the best coffee served in town at this place.

Parking is a major concern at this place and if you are expecting star level service you will be disappointed.
Chandra Shenoy
They have two branches one at Kodialbail and other near Milagres, Hampankatta.

This place is famous for its Tuppa dosa and Halwas. They start serving dosa only after 7:30 am. A strong coffee with dosa is classic.

Apart from that they provide good Mangalore buns, puri and goli baje.

Service is bad.
Have made this observation from long time.

Proper bill is given only in the presence of owner. If owner is absent then one has to walk to cashier and pay the bill for the said amount. Service is delayed so that owner leaves.

Probably a scam to make money by waiter and cashier.

Real Foodie
Food was average, veg food shouldn't be so overpriced. And cleanliness..well, the water they served us had oil on the surface. We couldn't even have a sip. And worse, I found a strand of body hair in my rice. Will never step in here again.
Ganesh A Kamath
A place for typical amchi food... pocket pe thoda bhari padega looking at the ambience and the cost... still a great place for veggies... banana leaf lunch and dinner... Goli baje, Biscuit Rotti, Batate ambade, are all good...
