Review Thangabali - Mumbai

Munawar Karbelkar
Thangabali- Flavours Of Southern India, is located on the ground floor of Manmohan Bhavan, Mahim-West. As the name suggests, it is the solitary serving the uniquely crafted relishing select cuisines across five southern states. Walk in and you are greeted, ‘Vanakkam’ with the hands folded, a big smile on face by the lungi cladded gentlemen. The menu is in Bonti form , a tool used to scrape coconut in southern India. They serve specially curated, uniquely crafted veg & non veg soups, combos, starters, mains and Thalis. The decor of the restaurant features a brass Kerala pakshi vilakku, temple pillars, kathakali mask, copper utensils and artifacts giving you the taste of South Indian fare. As we awaited for our selected dishes, we chomped fresh fried murukku , banana chips with 4 options of chutneys. We tried: ♦️Aam Panna ♦️Solkadi ♦️Elai Meen Pollichathu ( Pomfret) ♦️Whole Fish Fry ( Surmai) ♦️Manglorean Ghee Roast ( Mutton) Prawns Chettinadu ( Prawns) with neer dosa ♦️Mysore Pak ♦️Millennium Kulfi The food served was scrumptious and authentic. The fish we tried were extremely fresh and meaty.Spice tolerance levels were ascertained at the time of briefing the peculiarity of the dish. We were greeted by Mr. Vynkatesh and served by Mr. Kabir. Both were polite, friendly, courteous and professional. A must visit place for all the food lovers to enjoy the culinary delights of southern states.

A very beautiful place to have dishes from any of the 4 South Indian States. A great ambience and awesome service. We have chicken ghee roast. While it was very close to the authentic taste, maybe a little more was needed. Very surprisingly, we found each of the two bowls having a different taste. A must visit place for the South Indian community or for those who long for a taste of such good food. It's located in the heart of Mahim and very easily accessible

Thangabali! Nestled in Mahim, Thangabali is a culinary haven, offering a taste of coastal authenticity. Thangabali's inviting atmosphere elevates the dining experience. If you crave an authentic coastal culinary experiences, this Mahim gem with its Chicken Ghee Roast, Surmai Fry, and Prawns is a must-visit, leaving you with a taste of the coast that lingers in memory. A highly recommended place!❤️

If you adore south Indian cuisine, do visit this restaurant. There is waiter by the name Akram, who will help you in choosing right meals. Do look for him, if you are not sure about your choice. The dishes we ordered were both veg and non veg. Both the dishes were equally tasty and delicious. The decor of the restaurant is very enticing and the menu card is very innovative. Must visit.

I went to Mahim Dargah with a friend. After offering prayers we decided to sit some where and eat dinner. This place is just ten mins walk from Mahim dargah. This outlet serves best South Indian food from five states of South india. The attaire of the staff was so traditional. The ambiance is according to the theme with beautiful wall painting and warm light. We had ordered soul kadhi as a refreshing drink which was a mix of kokum and coconut water. For starters we had fish tava fry which was a surmai fish marinated with authentic spices of Kerala and was fried so well and the other one was Kerala pepper fry chicken which was so crispy and tangy. For mains we had Malabari prawns curry which has an amazing taste of coconut and was served with steam rice. The thaattukada mutton curry was falvoured with red tomatoe paste and nice and was served with Malabari parantha. We had a nice experience of South flavors which we had discovered there. Thanks to Mr. Kabeer for helping us to choose the dishes and for being a nice host.

Hands down to one of the best South food I have ever eaten across Mumbai. There are a lot of radiations which you can try and I think mutton pepper fry was my favorite. Even the payassam was too good to be true. Have you ordered a lot of things like gunpowder squid fry mutton pepper, chicken pepper fry, fried coriander chicken then we ordered for a biryani. Also we had chicken chettinad and some mutton gravy which is difficult to remember along with Malabar Paratha and neer dosa Then ended up eating a moong dal by some payassam and save your seviya carrot payassam. I didn't like the biryani to be very honest because it wasn't the Biryani that you can eat if you keep your expectations on biryani. What I was really disappointed about is the service... There is limited staff and it's difficult for them to take over a lot of people. After it's finished we have to wait for 15-20 minutes to call somebody and then ask for water. Rest overall experience was good and the food was satisfactory. Being some of the best dishes to some of the not so great dishes I ever had. Currently Zomato is running 50% off against this restaurant. Else if you are a gold member you walk into the restaurant you get 25% off on the bill if you pay by Zomato. Also there are offers available on swiggy die out as well which you can explore. So grab the deal go and have one of the best seafoods and chicken matine I had in this place.

This was my first try at trying this cuisine and I must say I regret not trying it sooner! Everything about this place is authentic from The ambience to the food and even the staff is dressed in traditional clothing. The staff is very courteous and welcoming which made our dining a pleasant experience. I tried- Chilli coriander pachdi- Soft paneer tossed in a Spicy green chutney. It was very flavourful! Kundapur ajadina- A mangalorean speciality with grated coconut and special masalas from the south. If you like spicy food, this one is for you!!! Ghassi- A coconut milk based red curry with vegetables. This is slightly tangy and spicy. Best of both worlds! Went really well with malabar parotta. Appam- They were soft and fluffy and was topped with gun powder. Neer Dosa- 1 portion serves 4! they were very soft and thin; And complimented the curries. Parotta- soft and flaky parottas! These are a must have, they taste great with curries but I also relished them just on their own too. Payasam- This is a MUST have!!!! The perfect sweet ending to your scrumptious meal. Definitely going back to try the lunch on banana leaf.

Which we ordered Payyoli chicken fry: amazing Kerela spices were added to the chicken. Rawas fish fry(filet): the fish was perfectly cooked and marinated in the masala. Manglorean ghee roast with crispy and warm parotta for the mains Chettinad mutton biryani For drinks, we also had rasam and delicious sol kadhi. The quality as well the quantity of the food was amazing The staff was courteous and attended to us very well. The overall experience was great. 10/10 recommended

Yesterday, I went to Thangbali for lunch. This is the place to go if you want true South Indian food (not the usual Doas/Idli). The staff is kind and the service is speedy. We tried Andra Dry Chicken- It was a touch spicy because it had green chilies. But I enjoyed the flavor. Fish Tawa fry - Surmai fried with the appropriate marination was soft, fresh, and delectable. Kandapura Chicken With Neer Dosa - This is one of my favorite combinations to try. Chettinad Biryani - I could smell the biryani before it was presented to the table. The flavor was amazing. Basmati rice with a layer of Chettinad chicken in between. Aam Panna & Soul Kadhi - To digest the entire meal which was just perfect. They also serve Authentic unlimited lunch on Banana leaf (Elai Sappadu) on weekdays.

If you love South Indian food then Thangabali is your one stop shop. You have an array of cuisines to choose from be it Tamil Nadu or Kerala or even Karnataka. Thangabali recommends us to get our hands dirty if we really want to enjoy the food! As it was a hot Afternoon we chose to go with Mampalla Cheru (Aam Panna) and it turned out to be the best choice because of how cooling it is. It is made from unripe mangoes and I'd highly recommend it In this hot weather. We also tried the Karbanda sharbat which has a tangy and sweet flavour to it. For starters we had Kerala pepper fry chicken which is basically Small crispy chunks of chicken dressed with onion and black pepper corn leaves. We also tried the Payyoli chicken fry which was one of the best dishes. It has multiple authentic Kerala spices with red chillies and Fennel. For our main courses we devoured on thattukada mutton curry. Thattukada means a roadside joint inspired dish. As it was a curry we chose to have it with some freshly made appam which balanced out the spices and really complimented the dish. Last but not the least we called for a portion of Mangalorean Ghee Roast which is an enjoyable combination of succulent pieces of chicken marinated and cooked in a robust masala prepared in rich ghee. The dry roasted spices is ground into a aromatic masala and coated on the chicken pieces which is then cooked in ghee for an esthetic flavour. It taste great with appams. All in all we had an amazing time at Thangabali. The staff are enthusiastic and the vibe is completely South Indian. It was a fantastic dining experience. I cannot wait to try out the 'Sadya'

Had great time with some friends at #Thangabali yesterday at a select sneak tasting. Thanks Dharmesh Karmokar and Amit Jambotkar for a lovely evening. Great variety, affordable pricing a no non-sense restaurant which is just about good served in a decent ambience. It is good that at least someone is thinking about honest to goodness food served in it's authentic simplicity. It is high time the food reclaimed the heroes place at the restaurant. For all those gourmets already aware of various Andhra, Tamil, Kannadiga, Kerala and Maglorean specialities this one place will offer all of that and beat the cravings. For those who do not know much about South India or it's cuisine it's the best place to start and hence a must visit as I can't think of a better way to get introduced. Either ways delectable, enjoyable, mouth slurping experience. One disclaimer though, there is a huge risk of overeating, so beware.

Thangabali is doing fried seafood very well. How they manage to get that beautiful, crunchy, moreish crust on their squid and their fish without it being greasy is a secret I’d love to discover. The Chicken Ajadina was coconutty and well seasoned - a good dish to try if you love grated coconut. Their appams were a disappointment both times I visited - not fluffy and quite chewy - but the neer dosas make up for that. The Sri Lankan Chicken Lollipops are quite different and come in a well-spiced thick gravy and can be had with neer dosa as part of your main meal. Watch out for botched orders on busy evenings. Overall, a good addition to the neighborhood.

Discovered Thangabali quite accidentally- on Good Friday, strolling around Mahim after a Pre-Prandial blood test and needing to eat after fasting from the previous evening. For Breakfast they offer a largish menu of veg and non veg options in a price range from Rs 120 to Rs 240/-. Taking mental leave from my Endocrinologist and dietician I ordered a Pondi Semiya Upma and a Dahavangere Benne Dosa. The Semiya Upma was served with two chutneys was light, fragrant and lovely. Served hot it made a great start! The Dhavangere Bene Dosa was served with Sambhar along with the chutneys and a large tablespoon of white butter or Makhan. The Dosa itself was steaming soft and I enjoyed my surprise breakfast! Pleasent atmbience, comfortable interiors with a wall marking the great Hindu temples across south east Asia. Waiters wore white Mundus and service was prompt - but early in the morning on a holiday no one else was in the restaurant. Pricing is moderate. No Service charge in the bill. Chef Santosh is a Gujarathi specialising in South Indian cuisine and has served at the Taj Group. The owners are a trio - none from the South. Recommended for their cuisine and great food.

Yes its South Indian much beyond just idlis, dosas & sambaar. Authentic recipes of this rich culinary region. Food - Delicious food with typical South Indian flavours ...its a no nonsense place focusing purely on taste & yes its very reasonable. Ambience - A simple and welcoming place with lingering carnatic music in the background which sets the mood to enjoy the scrumptious meal. Staff - A cordial staff is always such a plus. waiters wearing a lungi and a smile. Guys if you are around Mahim - Shivaji park area & craving for food other than pizza, pasta, oriental then THANGABALI is a must visit.

Awesome food . Never thought that could find such authentic South Indian food . And its not idli dosa vada which comes to our mind as soon as we read south Indian food , but the other delicacies from South. [1330447687:Gita Kamath K] at last I found Neer dosa , aapam and vegetable stew here in Mumbai . Truely delicious. Sure to visit again .

Interesting and different ambience and menu, i love the fact that they have huge variety of nonveg southindian food. Service is very friendly and prompt and food quality is top notch. My personal favourites - tamrind soup, clam starter and crab nanda gravy in main course along with neer dosa.

Thangabali. Gourmet on retail. Absolutely loved the food, the ambience and the gracious host ! Each dish was bursting with flavour, service was courteous and prompt, pricing was competitive. It was good to see the restaurant with a strong patriotic base. It has a map of the Akhanda Bharat on its walls, a charcoal sketch of Angkor Wat , and the food equally mirrors it. Thangabali left us impressed, satitated and lulled into food coma. Way to go !

I and my friend visited this place on 31st July. This is a newly opened restaurant this year. The Ambience is good. The Food ordered was quite delicious except for the Crispy Bombil Fry which was not crispy at all and you could taste a lot of the bones in it which is not expected in a Bombil. The staff is very helpful and the service provided was good. The seating is a bit problematic since some tables are not good for your legs incase you want to sit comfortably. Overall, the experience was good and place is recommended...

This is a posh place in a posh locality which is why we opted for it for a dinner date with two of our other friends and the experience didn't turn up to be as we expected even after spending 2000 rs over nothing.
Firstly this is not your place if you are not a coconut person because almost everything contains coconut and that too grated coconut.
We ordered a fish fry and a mutton curry and a squid masala with their authentic dosas and a malabar paratha and a few mojitos to wash it down.
The malabar paratha was too sweet for my preference and everything else had a lot of coconut.
I wished I had seen a review before trying them.
Maybe it didn't suit me but my suit others.
Other than that great ambience, great service, great presentation but really expensive.
Nikhil Nerlekar
Had been here for a family lunch. The ambience is relaxing and the staff is really polite. We ordered the ghee roast mutton, chicken angara, malbari parathas, neer dosa and their famous tawa pomfret. The food was just delicious and the service too was great. Will surely return.

We visited the restaurant on Sunday for lunch, the Promfret and Surmai used was very stale. When we spoke to the manager he said it's fresh and it should taste like that. Unfortunately the manager did not accept what we mentioned. The taste was completely unacceptable and it's not the first time we have dinned at the restaurant. I doubt we would be visiting the restaurant again! Disappointed and dismayed.

I was craving for caramel custard and what do I get... Sour curd!! Also the packing was inappropriate. A big container for a small custard due to which the custard got distorted.

Would I go back : Hell yes
Swapnil Gujarathi
One of the best restaurent where u can have authentic south indian dishes.
Rahul Meda
I am trying hard to understand why they named this restaurant as Thangabali and tagged exclusively as South Indian when none of the people here knows how south Indian food tastes. I have had Tamarind Rasam which is first of tangy like hell then tasted like fish which I had to return. Then comes the Tamarind Rice which is made with Basmathi (that's not how you make it) and it's gravy style rice (again not the way). Most importantly it is just Tamarind and no other spices. I strongly recommend that not to try this if you want south Indian
Shamili Shamu
The food was amazing, wait staff were polite, reservations were smooth. As a South Indian I felt the dishes could've been a bit more authentic but taste wise they were flawless. Can't complain. I loved the tables and chairs, the music was soothing and very close to home, the menu card was interesting and had a mess vibe to it with specials board. The fish varieties were amazing. It was little heavy on Kerala would love to see more of the other southern states as well.
Definitely recommend this restaurant.
And will revisit soon.
Treisha Dhuru
The food is just to die for. Authentic South Indian food I’ve had in a long long time. The staff can be more attentive however the ambience and food is just amazing. Will come back again.

I just ordered the Andhra Chicken Dosa home. What I received is 2 tiny triangles slightly filled with chicken. Seriously so much for 230 bucks. Pathetic quantity and no value for money. Still left hungry. :(

Thangabali at Mahim is a great joint serving South Indian Delicacy. The food is great, service is good, touch of culture and dash of tradition makes the place great. It's also value for money.

Love the ambience, the staff and the food but sadly the chettinad mutton was not good. This place for me is a once time visit. But the visit was worth it. Slightly hyped but good to visit and try on than rwgret of not going.

This place is heaven for the taste buds.

Among starters, the mutton ajadina, mushroom ajadina, and the gunpowder squid fry were damn good.
In mains, the mutton stew with appams is to die for.
Chicken chettinad with either neer dosa or appam is a treat too.

Thangabali was a refreshing food experience. The chicken / veg stew is definitely a must try! Don't forget to try the puttu. The dining experience will reveal Thangabali's commitment to fresh and hot food. Kudos to Kavir whose courteous service and passion added to the delight of food. A special call out to the manager Kamlesh as well;

Thangabali remember me a Bollywood movie dialogue. Anyway they serve the food in South style.
I got fried fish was spicy, tasty and well cooked, served on a kele ka patta.
In main course chicken chettinadu that served with paratha was awesome in taste.
Paratha was crispy and flaky. Chicken Chettinadu was spicy and very rich gravy.
I will come to this place again.

Thangabali takes you to the epic Southern cuisine served around the states of South India.
There were plenty of dishes to try on some of them I will mention in detail below-
Thangabali Fried Chicken-
So far a very unique Fried chicken starter which I had was Thangabali Fried chicken certainly a signature dish to try on. The texture was good , the taste was very crispy and good amount of meat was there. Overall a very good one.

Rasam-
Time for the traditional South Indian soup that is the Rasam. No doubt that it was having a very strong test and a very nice aroma. A certain try out soup starter for the strong taste lovers.

Chicken Chettinad-
Coming onto the main course, I can say that Chicken Chettinad is a worth to try for. The traditional spicy chicken curry is best served with the authentic Kerala style Malabar Parotha which is very flaky and crispy in taste.

Srilankan Chicken Lollipop-
I have tried mostly the normal chicken lollipop which is most of the time a dry starter but at Thangabali something new I experienced was this appetizer that is the Srilankan Chicken Lollipops. To describe the taste its certainly very spicy with the presence of the curry.

Payasam- Coming onto the sweet surprise nothing can beat this dish that is the Payasam(sweetened boiled milk topped up with rice then refrigerated in cool temperature and later on topped up with dry fruits). Payasam is a very old sweetdish and is still very popular now also.

Certainly the best place for Authentic South Indian dishes. A worth to try.
TheMissingDelicacy
Thangabali is a treat for South Indian cuisine. A great restaurant located opposite to Shobha hotel. Chicken Chettinaad is a signature dish here and a must try for sure. Also, Kerala Roast Chicken is highly recommended. Do visit here if you are craving for South Indian delicacies.

We decided to skip the all time favourite Sneha restaurant a few meters away and try Thangabali. To begin with ambiance is really pretty with wall murals, paintings, quotes and facts. Special mention of their lovely play list! The food is a mixture of a little bit of all Southern states. The rassam was good with a kick from pepper and sourness from tomato. Masala papad was tiny rice papad topped with the usual tomato and onion. The Thoran had too much of coconut and barely any beans that it was named after. The chicken ghee roast was nothing, I repeat, nothing close to the original ghee roast but enjoyable nonetheless. Appam was a disaster. Flat not well fermented. Sneha has much better appams with a spongy centre and curved thin edges. While the menu is good a little bit of attention to details will do wonders!

I usually decide place for our family lunch or dinner and I wanted to some south Indian food and my mum is seafood love so I couldn't find better place then thangabali which in budget as well as serves amazing seafood and also it is a authentic south Indian restaurant. Ambience is not very fancy. Food here is too tasty and the quantity is also good not best but good. Every dish you try is perfectly made. We ordered bombli fry, chilli coriander prawns, chicken chettinad with rice. Must try out this place if you're a seafood or south Indian food lover.

Had mutton ajaiwada, thangabali chicken fry, chicken kozhi vepudu, neer dosa, appam, Malabar paratha, prawn chilli coriander, ravas ghassi (the fish had a little smell) and Kerala boiled rice. Ended with paal payasam. Great food, service and ambience.

Nice South Indian cuisines with a good location... Ambience complements the food served with a nice relishing taste... Non veg range is wide and quite a delectable eats.

This place serves some authentic South Indian cuisine especially sea food. I have visited this place multiple times and am in awe of their food quality and service standards. The servers are extremely courteous and well spoken. They are really helpful in explaining the dishes and describing the preparation. It helps a great deal in making the right choice of dish. The fish is always fresh and every cuisine is very tasty and it’s really difficult to choose a favourite.

I had the surmai Fry and rawas Fry off late in starters and for mains I had Cheemen Theeyal and desi rice. This is a rich prawns gravy which goes very well with the boiled rice.

A 5 star for food quality , ambience and service!!!

To find authentic regional food in a fast food loving city is something very hard to come by! Thangabali is one such hidden-gem of a restaurant serving superb & lip-smacking Kerala & Andhra food right in the city of dreams. The menu card, taste, autheticity, ambience, quality & quantity of the restaurant & food was mindblowing & outstanding.
We tried (i) Andhra Paneer chilly dry - 4/5
(ii) Paysam - 5/5
(iii) Paratha & Appam - 5/5
(iv) Rasam - 5/5
(v) Mix veg Chettinad - 5/5
Besides their onion, tomato & garlic chutneys will turn your world around with joy. I'd definitely would want to visit this place once again & my dear readers & friends do visit Thangabali to experience the magic of South Indian food.

Great food amazing hospitality...I don't remember the name of the server but he was very kind gave the right suggestions and told us when we were over ordering...the entire staff was helpful I think this might be the best branch of Thangabali

We ordered pineapple coconut rassam, but didn't like it coz it was having a wierd after taste, and didn't have it. After manager noticed it, he came to us and asked if we want something else instead, and we denied, even after denying for many times we were served with tomato pepper soup, which tasted ok. The most disappointing thing was restaurant charged us for both the soups even after serving the second on their own. Rest of the food also didn't taste good, the food wasn't worth the money. Staffs behavior was good though but didn't like that they charged for soup, when we didn't want it, and didn't even consume it.

Had gone there with a client with no expectation. But believe me the food was amazing. The seafood was fresh and delicious. And the service was top class. Will visit the place again soon.

Was here for lunch with my wife. Had visited the Bandra outlet with my friends for dinner so wanted to take my wife too as the food was really good. Decided to try their Mahim outlet this time. The Bandra outlet is bigger and more tastefully done up than the Mahim one. They serve South Indian cuisine and everything that we ordered was yummy and the seafood was fresh. Would surely come back for more but would prefer the Bandra outlet.

They have proper chettinand food which is rare in Mumbai everyone will enjoy their ambience and service which I liked the most the food have a decent quantity and a bit overpriced but still it is the best place you can visit for this cuisine

Apart from scrumptious dishes from a spread of South India regions, the ambience and introduction to the cuisine has been given a lot of thought with an authentic creative touch. The sides and chutneys are also worth a mention. Kerala style prawns, gun powder squid fry, Tamil style offal dish ... are a few items of the many worth giving a try. Ofcourse check what suits best with your palate.
Anagha Uplekar
This is a nice place with humble staff. Food is okay. Chicken ghee roast we ordered was way too spicy. Mutton ajadino was a dish for coconut lovers.

Great food (be sure to try Chicken Ajadina with appam, ) and even greater service. Kavir was our attendant and he helped us in choosing the right food as per our preferences. He's a great and a humble guy. The ambience is typical that of a restaurant that you will find in Southern India. Great place to eat

Oh. My. God. This place is amazing. Make sure you use your hands and leave the cutlery aside.
Not had such good South Indian in such a long time. This is definitely a favourite of mine and going to be a weekly visit.

Started off with a rasam which was insanely spiced and tangy. Ordered appam and stew after that. Really savoury. Had to order more appams for the stew. Followed that with puttu and kadala curry. Delicious. Finally finished off with the filter kappi.

It’s been about an hour since I finished eating and my stomach, mind, and wallet are so satisfied with the meal. Do yourself a favour and get to thangabali asap!!

Great place for kerala food! Their service was too good. The waiters were in Premam style black shirt - white mundu attire. Ambience had a good kerala feel to it.

We had the following -

Pepper chicken starter- This was delicious! Muat try if you are ok with spicy food.

Chettinad chicken with neer dosa - This was sourer than expected probably because of more onions. I have had better versions of this gravy. Neer dosa was very expensive.

Puran poli ice cream - Tastes exactly like puran poli, so can't complain. Tried it out of curiosity, next time will just have plain puran poli.

Pan flavour ice cream - This was another unique ice cream. It was refreshing and also helped with digestion.

Overall, it was a good experience.

Service - 5
Ambience - 5
Food - 3
