Junkyard café located on Hill road is all about the funky and creative scraps and leftovers usually found at garages and junkyards, combined together to form works of art. In terms of décor and ambiance, Junkyard café surely doesn’t disappoint. Every nook and corner is artistically designed from nuts and bolts, license plates on cars, car tyres, buttons, mother-boards and so much more.
Divided distinctly into three sections – outdoor seating area for sheesha, indoor seating area on the ground floor, and indoor area on the 1st floor which is mainly opened in the evenings and given out for parties, events, celebrations etc, well, it surely is massive!
Moving over to their menu, they have made it more compact, thereby eliminating all of the exciting, over-the-top dishes resulting in a run of the mill menu, which had a few hits and misses. Here are the deets.
COCKTAILS/MOCKTAILS
1) Edison Bulb #1 – A concoction of white rum, elder flower, vanilla sugar, lime juice and rosemary. It was served in a bulb along with dry ice. Loved this one! A must try.
2) Skelaton 2 – A blend of vodka, white rum, green melon, kaffir lime, topped with lemonade. While the cocktail was just so refreshing and so well blended, we really wished this one was served in a fancier glass rather than a regular one.
3) Citrus Mart – A mix of orange, lime, pomegranate and a splash of ginger. A perfect match of ingredients. Recommended.
FOOD
1) Junkyard Special Veg Platter – It consisted of onion rings, cheese spring rolls, malai broccoli, malai soya chaap and a fresh salad. While the malai chaap was bland and tasteless, the onion rings were spicy, crunchy and paired perfectly with the BBQ sauce, malai broccoli was delicious and the cheese spring rolls were gooey and mouth-watering.
2) Mixed Non Veg Platter – It comprised of chicken tikka, thyme chicken strips, mutton seekh, mini chicken steaks and chicken wings. While the chicken wings, thyme chicken strips and mini chicken steaks were okayish, we love the delectable mutton sheekh and could eat plenty of them! On the whole, we did prefer the Junkyard Special Veg Platter over this one.
3) Chicken Schezwan Dimsums – Schezwan style stuffed chicken dimsums. They were served in a bamboo basket and were streamed beautifully. Went well with the schezwan sauce that accompanied this dish. Recommended.
4) Mutton Biryani – Aromatic mutton biryani which was served alongside a raita. The mutton could have been cooked for a longer period.
5) Kadai Chicken – Hands down, this was my favourite dish on their menu. Rich, authentic Indian cuisine that is oh-so-delicious. The chicken was cooked to perfection and just melted in the mouth. It was served alongside an assorted bread basket comprising of butter naans and parathas. This dish would be a crime to miss out on. Highly recommended.
6) Epic Walnut Brownie – This dessert was a bit of a disappointment as there was a strong taste of maida in it, and there weren’t any walnuts. We savoured the vanilla ice-cream that came alongside it, instead. Can be given a miss.
On the negative side, many of the items on their menu weren’t available. However, their staff were courteous and well trained, especially the manager Mr. Ajay and our servers for the day.
